Hard-water stains are calcium and magnesium deposits left when water evaporates. The safest removal method is to match a mild acid to an acid-tolerant surface, keep it wet long enough to soften the deposit, agitate without scratching, rinse completely and dry. Vinegar is suitable for many glass, glazed ceramic, chrome and stainless-steel surfaces, but it can permanently damage marble, limestone, travertine and other acid-sensitive finishes.

Start with the material, not the stain

Before applying any descaler, identify the surface and read its care instructions. A deposit that looks identical on a shower door and a stone vanity does not have the same safe treatment.

  • Identify the finish: distinguish glazed ceramic from natural stone, chrome from a colored or treated coating, and stainless steel from plated or painted metal.
  • Remove loose soil first: wipe with clean water and a soft cloth so grit cannot be dragged across the finish.
  • Test discreetly: apply the proposed solution to an inconspicuous spot and check the finish after rinsing and drying.
  • Use material safety as the priority: stronger acid or more aggressive scrubbing is not automatically better.

Which treatment fits each surface?

Surface Acid guidance Low-scratch tools Dwell guidance Rinsing and odor notes
Glass, shower doors and mirrors Mild vinegar-water solution or compatible citric-acid descaler Microfiber cloth, non-scratch sponge or soft brush Not stated in the cited guidance; keep wet and do not let the solution dry Rinse fully and squeegee or dry immediately; citric acid avoids vinegar odor
Glazed ceramic tile and grout Diluted vinegar or citric acid, only where surrounding materials are acid-tolerant Soft sponge and soft toothbrush or cleaning brush for grout Not stated in the cited guidance; use a short, label-directed contact period Rinse grout and adjacent tile thoroughly, then dry
Glazed porcelain sinks and toilets Mild acid on compatible glazed porcelain Non-scratch sponge or soft brush Not stated in the cited guidance; keep the bowl or sink wet during treatment Flush or rinse away all residue; never mix cleaners in a toilet
Chrome faucets and fixtures Delta Faucet specifies 50/50 white vinegar and water Soft cloth Not stated in the cited guidance; do not leave acid to dry Rinse thoroughly and blot dry; avoid harsh or abrasive chemicals
Stainless steel World Stainless names a 25% vinegar solution; its architectural guidance also describes one part vinegar to three parts water as usually effective for adherent scale Soft cloth or non-abrasive pad; never gritty scouring powder Not stated in the cited guidance; use the shortest effective wet contact Clean, rinse and dry; citric acid is an odourless alternative
Marble, limestone, travertine and unknown stone Do not use vinegar or other acids; choose a pH-neutral, stone-approved cleaner Soft cloth or the tool specified by the stone-care product Follow the product label and stone manufacturer Rinse as directed and test in an inconspicuous area first

Surface-by-surface directions

Glass, shower doors and mirrors

Spray or wipe on a mild vinegar-water solution, or use a compatible citric-acid descaler. Keep the film wet while the deposit softens; the Lowe’s guide and Martha Stewart’s February 2, 2026 guide both emphasize giving vinegar contact time rather than scrubbing a dry crust. Lift the softened residue with a non-scratch sponge, microfiber cloth or soft brush. Rinse until no cleaner remains, then squeegee or dry the glass immediately. A soft cloth soaked in the solution can be wrapped around a faucet or shower-head fitting when the deposit is at an edge or joint.

Glazed ceramic tile and grout

Use diluted vinegar or citric acid only after confirming that the tile glaze, grout sealer and adjacent materials tolerate acid. Apply to the mineral film, work grout lines with a soft toothbrush or cleaning brush, wipe away the loosened residue and rinse generously. Keep acid off natural stone borders, metal trim and other sensitive finishes; rinse those transitions promptly if splashed.

Glazed porcelain sinks and toilets

On compatible glazed porcelain, a mild acid treatment can soften the ring or scale. Agitate with a non-scratch sponge or soft brush, then rinse the sink or flush the toilet repeatedly until the residue and cleaner are gone. Keep the treatment inside a toilet bowl rather than on seats, hinges or surrounding flooring unless those materials are separately confirmed compatible. Never combine vinegar, citric acid or any other acid with bleach or an unknown toilet product.

Chrome faucets and fixtures

Delta Faucet states that hard-water stains may be removed with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Apply it with a soft cloth, not a metal scraper or abrasive pad, then rinse thoroughly and blot dry. Delta warns against industrial or abrasive cleaners, bleach-based cleaners, hydrofluoric, hydrochloric or phosphoric acids, and caustic agents.

Franke recommends starting faucet surfaces with soapy water or dishwashing detergent. For remaining scale, use a gentle vinegar-water solution or a suitable limescale remover only when the finish permits it. Colored, brushed, coated or otherwise treated metallic finishes can be damaged by powders, pastes, solvents, metal scrapers and harsh chemicals, so follow that faucet maker’s care sheet instead of assuming that bare chrome guidance applies.

Stainless-steel sinks, appliances and trim

World Stainless identifies a 25% vinegar solution for limescale when a cream cleanser is insufficient. Its architectural guidance separately says one part vinegar to three parts water is usually effective for adherent hard-water scale. These are different published concentrations, so use the lower-strength approach first and follow the product or manufacturer direction for the specific item. Apply with the grain where a directional finish is visible, use a soft cloth or non-abrasive pad, then clean, rinse and dry completely. Scouring powders can scratch stainless steel. If vinegar odor is undesirable, World Stainless identifies citric acid as an odourless alternative.

Marble, limestone, travertine and other acid-sensitive finishes

Do not generalize the vinegar method to natural stone or to an unidentified surface. Acid can etch sensitive stone and leave a dull patch even when the deposit itself disappears. Use a pH-neutral cleaner expressly approved for that stone, follow the surface manufacturer’s instructions and test in a hidden area before treating the visible stain. The same caution applies to decorative or treated faucet finishes whose coating chemistry is unknown.

A safe removal workflow

  1. Identify the material and finish. Check the fixture, tile, appliance or stone manufacturer’s care instructions.
  2. Clear away loose dirt. Rinse with water and wipe with a soft cloth before applying any acid.
  3. Choose a compatible solution. Use diluted white vinegar or citric acid only on an acid-tolerant surface; use a pH-neutral stone cleaner on sensitive materials.
  4. Keep the deposit wet. Allow the label-directed contact period, but do not let acid dry on the finish.
  5. Agitate gently. Use microfiber, a soft sponge or a soft brush. Avoid steel wool, razor blades, metal scrapers and gritty powders.
  6. Rinse until residue is gone. Pay special attention to grout joints, faucet seams, drains and hardware.
  7. Dry completely. Wipe fixtures and stainless steel; squeegee shower glass immediately after rinsing.
  8. Repeat before escalating. If scale remains, make another short, gentle treatment rather than switching immediately to a harsher chemical.

Cleaners and tools that can damage a finish

  • Never mix vinegar, citric acid or another acid with bleach or an unknown cleaner; hazardous vapors or reactions can result.
  • Do not use steel wool, abrasive pads, scouring powders or metal scrapers on glass, chrome or stainless steel.
  • Avoid bleach-based, industrial, caustic and strong mineral-acid products on faucet finishes unless the manufacturer specifically approves them.
  • Do not put acidic cleaners on marble, limestone, travertine or unknown stone.
  • Ventilate the area, wear suitable gloves and follow the cleaner label, including any required eye protection or dilution.

Prevent new hard-water deposits

Drying is the simplest prevention step. Squeegee shower glass after use, wipe faucets and stainless steel after splashes, and dry tile edges where water pools. Regular light cleaning prevents a thick mineral film that needs more contact time or repeated treatment.

Lowe’s identifies water softeners as a way to reduce excess minerals in the water supply. It also notes that water-repellent sprays may create a barrier against deposits, provided the product is compatible with the surface and its manufacturer’s instructions. World Stainless likewise emphasizes wiping stainless surfaces dry in hard-water areas.

For recurring deposits, correct the water source and the drying routine rather than repeatedly increasing acid strength. Material compatibility remains the controlling decision every time you clean.
