How to Remove an Old Crank-Out Window Sash Safely

Removing a crank-out sash is different from removing the whole window. Identify the hardware, support the sash continuously, and use only instructions that match your model.

First decide whether you need to remove only the crank-out sash—the panel that opens—or the entire window and frame. Those are different jobs. For an Andersen 400 Series casement, Andersen’s instructions say to open the sash about 30 degrees, support it continuously, release the operator arm, remove specified hinge screws, and slide the hinge shoes off their channels. That sequence is model-specific; identify your window and hardware before using it.

Choose what you are removing

A crank-out window has an opening sash attached to an operator and hinges. Removing that sash does not necessarily mean removing the frame from the wall.

Approach What comes out What remains
Sash removal The opening sash is detached from its operator and hinges. The window frame remains in place.
Pocket replacement The existing sashes, stops, and hardware are removed for a replacement installed within the existing opening. The existing wood frame remains, if it is appropriate for the installation. Pella’s overview does not determine whether a particular frame is suitable.
Full-frame replacement The entire window frame and sash are removed. The old frame does not remain in the opening.

Andersen distinguishes full-frame replacement from retaining an existing frame, while Pella describes pocket replacement in an existing wood casement or awning frame. Decide the project scope before removing trim or prying at the frame.

Before you start

  • Identify the manufacturer, series, and operator and hinge arrangement. The detailed steps below are for Andersen 400 Series casement windows manufactured from 1966 to the present, not a universal method for all crank-out windows.
  • Keep the sash supported throughout the work. Andersen warns that releasing the operator arm can let the sash swing freely and break free.
  • Use care around glass and follow the tool maker’s instructions. Crestline’s separate casement-replacement instructions recommend safety glasses and careful sash movement to reduce the chance of glass breakage.
  • At an elevated opening, take precautions against falls and do not leave the opening unattended, especially where children are present. Andersen warns that a fall from a window opening could cause serious injury or death.

Stop if the hardware is concealed, damaged, painted in, or unlike the manufacturer’s instructions. The documented instructions do not establish a safe workaround for an unidentified or damaged assembly. A flat-blade screwdriver is specified for releasing the Andersen operator-arm clip; hinge screws also have to be removed. Other fasteners and tool needs can vary.

Remove an Andersen 400 Series casement sash

Use this sequence only when the window and hardware match the Andersen 400 Series instructions. Have a helper assist with a large or heavy sash so it remains controlled while disengaged.

  1. Open the sash to about 30 degrees. Remove the stopper screws from the top and bottom hinge channels.
  2. Support the sash continuously. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the operator-arm clip from the sash bracket. If there is a control bracket, remove its screw and slide the bracket off the hinge plate.
  3. Remove the hinge screw from each of the top and bottom hinge arms and the window frame. Crank the operator open to clear the sash.
  4. Hold the sash firmly and slide the top and bottom hinge shoes off the ends of their hinge channels. Remove the sash and place it on a flat work surface with the interior side facing up.

Keep removed fasteners if they are needed for the repair or the next installation step. Use the manufacturer’s illustrated instructions to confirm the parts and their positions before proceeding.

When the frame is part of the replacement

For a pocket replacement, Pella’s overview describes removing the existing sashes, stops, and hardware, then installing the replacement in an existing wood casement or awning frame. Whether that frame is sound and suitable depends on its actual condition and the chosen installation method; the overview cannot assess an individual opening.

A full-frame replacement removes the entire frame and sash, according to Andersen’s description. If you are unsure whether the frame should stay, or whether it is suitable for a pocket installation, establish the scope and assess the frame before dismantling the opening.

When to stop and get model-specific help

  • You cannot identify the manufacturer or match the operator and hinge hardware to its instructions.
  • The release mechanism is damaged, stuck, painted over, or different from the documented arrangement.
  • You cannot keep the sash controlled while releasing the operator or hinges.
  • You are uncertain whether the job calls for sash removal, pocket replacement, or full-frame replacement.

For an unidentified or damaged window, consult the matching manufacturer instructions or a qualified window professional rather than improvising a release method.
