To reduce the speed of a woodworking router, use its built-in variable-speed control and follow the instructions for that specific model. Choose a setting suited to the bit diameter and material, and never exceed the bit maker’s maximum rated speed. This guide is about woodworking routers, not Wi-Fi routers.
How to lower a router’s speed
- Check the router manual. Find how its speed control works and whether the setting may be changed while the motor is running. Do not assume another router uses the same dial direction or adjustment procedure.
- Set the speed for the bit and material. Use the router maker’s guidance alongside the bit manufacturer’s recommendations. A larger-diameter bit generally calls for a lower speed; Kreg’s router-table safety instructions specifically say to reduce speed when using large-diameter bits (Kreg router-table instructions).
- Check the bit’s maximum rating. Never run the bit faster than that limit. Bosch’s GOF13-25 manual warns that exceeding a bit’s maximum rated speed can cause it to break apart (Bosch GOF13-25 Operating and Safety Instructions).
If your router has no adjustable speed, do not try to slow it with an external controller unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that device for the exact router. The sources cited here do not establish that external controllers are compatible or safe.
Example: Bosch GOF13-25 speed control
The Bosch GOF13-25 has a variable-speed dial. Its manual says to rotate the dial toward a lower-numbered setting to decrease speed. The dial can be adjusted while the router is on, but only when the bit is not touching the cutting surface. The manual groups positions 1–2 as low, 3–4 as medium, and 5–6 as high. These directions apply to this model, not to routers generally.
GOF13-25 recommendations in Bosch’s chart
The following settings are Bosch’s recommendations for the GOF13-25 and the materials shown. They are not universal settings; consult the exact router manual and bit maker’s guidance before cutting.
#1 Best Overall
- POWER RATINGS & COMPATIBILITY: 110‑120V AC, peak 15A, rated 8A continuous. Resistive loads up to 1800W. Inductive loads (brushed motors) up to 1500W. For brushed motors only – not for brushless, DC, induction, or circuit‑board devices. Motor startup current can be 4-7 times rated current and may trip the 15A breaker; reduce load if needed
- LED VOLTAGE DISPLAY: Turn the dial; the LED meter shows output voltage from 0‑120V. Each setting shows a clear number. After finding a preferred speed for your router, drill, or duct fan, note the voltage shown for later reference
- RESETTABLE OVERLOAD PROTECTION: A 15A circuit breaker cuts power when current exceeds 15A. Flip the reset switch to restore power – no fuses to replace. The ABS shell covers internal components
- COMPACT DESIGN: Measures 5.5 x 2.4 x 2.25 inches with a 3‑ft grounded power cord. Internal contacts support long‑term use. The control knob allows 0‑100% adjustment
- READY TO USE: Comes with a grounded 3‑prong plug that fits Type A and B outlets. A back clip attaches to a belt or tool bag. Plug in, clip on, and operate

Bosch’s listed diameter bands do not cover every boundary or size. For an unlisted diameter, use the complete manual and bit maker’s recommendations rather than guessing or interpolating a setting.

First check the router and bit documentation to confirm the required speed is compatible with the tool. If the router cannot be set to the speed the bit requires, use a router with an appropriate built-in speed range rather than assuming an add-on controller will work. A variable-speed router is worth considering only when the current tool cannot meet the job’s speed requirement; replacing a router is not necessary if its existing control can do so.
Rank #2
- VOLTAGE AND LOAD RANGE: Operates on AC 120V with 15A max, recommended continuous load ≤10A.
- MOTOR TYPE COMPATIBILITY: Works only with brush-type AC motors including routers and grinders.
- EASY CONTROL DIAL: Adjustable rotary knob for gradual speed change and steady power output.
- CONVENIENT OPERATION MODES: Off / Full / Variable switch settings for flexible motor control.
- IMPORTANT REMINDER: Not suitable for brushless, induction, or soft-start motor types and LED lights.
Bosch’s 1617EVS is one manufacturer-documented example of a fixed-base router with adjustable speed settings (Bosch 1617EVS product page). That example is not a recommendation for every project: check compatibility with the intended bit, base or table, and work.
