To limit construction dust at home, close windows and exterior doors during dusty work when it is safe to do so, use compatible filtration as a supplement, and clean settled dust with damp methods. For noise and persistent dust, ask the project contact about site controls and scheduling, keep a brief record of problems, and contact the local authority responsible for construction, environmental health, or noise complaints if they continue. Residents can reduce some exposure indoors, but dust suppression and noise control at the source are the responsibility of the project operator, under local rules.
Reduce the amount of dust entering your home
Outdoor particles can enter through open windows and doors as well as small gaps. Closing windows and exterior doors during visibly dusty work can reduce one route indoors, but it will not seal the home or guarantee that no dust gets in. Do this only when indoor temperatures are safe and ventilation needs allow it. New York City Health also advises keeping windows and doors closed when the indoor temperature is comfortable and using air-conditioning recirculation where available: NYC Health: Air Quality and Health.

If you have central heating or cooling, check the equipment instructions before changing its settings. Some systems bring in outdoor air, and a recirculation setting may not be available or appropriate in every home. Do not block an outdoor-air intake or change system operation contrary to the manufacturer’s guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse filtration as a supplement, not a site-control measure
A portable air cleaner or a suitable HVAC filter may reduce some particles indoors. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emphasizes that filtration supplements source control and ventilation with clean outdoor air; air cleaners and filters cannot remove every pollutant. A room cleaner is an optional measure for a room where people spend time, not a guarantee that construction dust will be eliminated. See the EPA guide to air cleaners and filters in the home.

Provides a roll of painter's tape and a box of pushpins to make the screen more stable install it just in a few minutes.
- 【High Traffic Areas】Our plastic dust barrier size of 4'W x 7.5'H, Seals doorways up to 3'W x 7'H and are wide enough for most standard door frames. It can be used in any doorway of home, workshop, office, basement, closet, etc. It is a necessary dustproof tool for home renovations, construction site. IMPORTANT: PLEASE MEASURE the DOOR SIZE FIRST!
- For a portable cleaner: Compare room coverage, replacement-filter availability and cost, and noise at the setting you expect to use. Choose a particle-filtering device rather than an ozone-generating one.
- For an HVAC filter: Match the exact dimensions and system-approved specifications. A higher-efficiency filter is not automatically suitable for every blower or heating and cooling system. Follow the equipment and filter makers’ replacement instructions.
EPA’s guidance on caring for air cleaners and filters recommends considering higher-efficiency central-system filters for indoor particles, while stressing that the filter must be appropriate for the system.
Clean settled dust without putting as much back into the air
Use a damp cloth for dusting; dampening helps keep settled dust from being stirred back into the air. A vacuum with a HEPA filter can help keep some vacuumed dust from escaping back into the room. EPA advises people with asthma or allergies to leave the area while it is being vacuumed. These are indoor cleanup steps, not substitutes for controlling emissions at the construction site. EPA’s filter and cleaning guidance covers these measures.

Ask the project contact about dust and noise controls
If a site contact is available, ask for the name and contact details of the person responsible for community concerns. Ask what controls are being used, when the noisiest work is planned, and whether the project has relevant permits or an environmental plan. EPA demolition guidance describes water spray as a dust-control practice and notes that applicable requirements can come from local, county, state, or federal rules. The project should work with the relevant permitting offices and environmental regulators because requirements are site-specific: EPA: Controlling dust at demolition sites.
For noise, useful source-level measures can include planning noisy work for less sensitive times, notifying neighbors, choosing quieter equipment or techniques, and limiting unnecessary noise on site. EPA Victoria describes these measures in guidance for its jurisdiction: EPA Victoria: Construction noise. New South Wales has its own regulatory and guideline framework, including risk-based assessment and community engagement; the cited NSW page distinguishes the status of its draft guideline from its interim guideline: EPA NSW: Construction noise. Neither jurisdiction’s rules or hours should be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Document recurring problems and contact the right authority
- Keep a simple log. Record dates, times, duration, whether the issue was dust or noise, where it affected your home, and practical effects such as needing to close windows. Photographs can help document visible dust.
- Contact the site or project contact. Describe the times and impacts and ask what controls or schedule changes may address the problem.
- Escalate persistent nuisance locally. Contact your council or the authority responsible for environmental health, construction, or noise complaints. Ask which department handles construction-site reports; the route varies by location.
The UK Health and Safety Executive directs nuisance dust or noise complaints to the local authority, while EPA Victoria describes a different division of responsibilities between state and council agencies. The right route depends on where you live. For the UK demolition-site question, HSE’s public guidance is here: HSE: Construction dust.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Take extra care if dust affects someone’s health
If dust appears to trigger symptoms, reduce exposure where practical and seek advice from a clinician about concerning symptoms, especially if someone in the household has asthma or another respiratory condition. The available guidance does not establish one numeric exposure threshold or a quantified health risk that applies to every resident near construction. Occupational exposure limits for workers should not be treated as resident thresholds.
