Persistent vibration or suspected damage calls for a dated record and follow-up with building management, the project representative, or the relevant local authority—there is no universal household fix or resident vibration threshold established here.
Dust, noise, and vibration travel differently, so they need different responses. What the contractor must do and where you can complain depend on your location, permits, and local rules.

How do I keep construction dust out of my house?
Start by limiting the routes outdoor particles use to enter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies open windows and doors, as well as small cracks and crevices, as ways particles can get indoors. Its general indoor-particle guidance suggests closing windows when outdoor particle pollution is high, using a higher-efficiency HVAC filter where appropriate, and considering a portable air cleaner. These steps may reduce particles indoors; they cannot guarantee that construction dust will be eliminated. See the EPA’s overview of indoor particulate matter sources.

Think of these as measures at two different points in the pathway: reducing entry through openings and filtering particles already in a room. Neither is a substitute for a worksite’s dust controls. If dust is entering repeatedly, pair practical indoor steps with documentation and a question to the project or the local authority about site requirements.

Reduce entry without creating a new hazard
- Keep windows and exterior doors closed while dust is visibly present or outdoor particles are elevated. If you need fresh air, wait for conditions to improve where practical.
- Reduce obvious gaps only when it is safe and appropriate for your home. Do not seal or disable combustion appliances, block required ventilation, or make changes that could create a ventilation or carbon-monoxide hazard.
- Choose a portable air cleaner sized for the room where you spend time. A HEPA-equipped unit is a relevant option for airborne particles, but performance depends on the unit, room, placement, and use; the cited EPA guidance does not promise removal of all construction dust.
- Consider a higher-efficiency HVAC filter only after checking the system manufacturer’s guidance or consulting a qualified HVAC professional. A filter that is too restrictive for the equipment can impair airflow; higher efficiency is not automatically compatible.
If comparing an air cleaner with an HVAC filter, the air cleaner is a room-level option that can be placed where you spend time, while an HVAC filter depends on the home’s existing equipment and its permitted filter specifications. The relevant question is not simply which filter sounds more efficient; it is whether a proposed filter is compatible with your system and whether a portable unit is appropriate for the room. The cited EPA guidance does not establish a single model, price, or performance level that suits every home.
For a practical sequence, first observe when dust is present and which openings are exposed. Close windows and doors during dusty periods if doing so is safe, then choose a room for an appropriately sized portable air cleaner if you want an additional indoor measure. Before changing the central filter, check the equipment instructions or ask an HVAC professional. Keep track of whether these steps coincide with less visible dust; that observation can help you explain the problem, but it does not prove that all particles have been removed.
Check the source and local dust controls
If dust appears to come from a nearby demolition site, note the dates, times, weather or visible conditions, and where dust is entering. EPA says demolition dust requirements are site-specific; the relevant local or state environmental regulator and the permitting office are places to check what controls or permit conditions apply. Its guidance also notes that fugitive dust can concern sensitive residents and may contain lead. See EPA’s demolition-site stormwater and dust guidance, updated November 17, 2025.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not assume every demolition site has identical requirements or that a general household air-quality recommendation describes what a contractor is legally required to do. Ask the local office which rules or permit conditions apply to that site. When you contact the project, describe what you observed—such as visible dust, the time it occurred, and where it entered—rather than making a claim about a rule you have not verified. This makes it easier for the project representative or authority to determine what information is relevant.
Dust from work inside your own home needs a different response from dust drifting in from a neighboring site. EPA’s remodeling guidance describes containment measures such as barriers and exhaust ventilation, but explicitly says those ordinary measures are not approved for disturbing lead paint. Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. Do not sand, scrape, or otherwise disturb suspect paint; use lead-safe procedures and qualified help. The cited page is about remodeling in the home, so do not assume it directly sets requirements for an adjacent construction project. Read EPA’s indoor-air guidance for home remodeling.
This distinction matters if you are coordinating your own repair while nearby work is underway. Ordinary barriers and exhaust ventilation are general renovation practices, not a blanket approval for lead-paint work. If the home predates 1978 and suspect paint could be disturbed, do not treat a do-it-yourself dust barrier as adequate protection. Get advice on lead-safe procedures before work begins.

Can I make nearby construction quieter indoors?
Some sound can be reduced inside a home, but the strongest interventions usually control noise at its source or interrupt its path before it reaches nearby properties. Ask the contractor, project representative, building manager, or local authority what mitigation plan and permitted work hours apply. Rules differ by city and project; a complaint route or allowable schedule in one place is not a universal standard.

It helps to separate what you can do for personal comfort from what can change the noise reaching the property. Closing windows may be an indoor option when it is safe and compatible with ventilation needs. Hearing protection may make a loud period easier for an individual to tolerate. By contrast, equipment enclosures, work methods, schedules, and temporary barriers are project-side measures: the resident can ask about them, but generally does not control them.
Ask about project-side measures
- Quieter equipment or work methods where feasible.
- Enclosures around noisy equipment and maintenance that prevents avoidable noise.
- Scheduling especially disruptive work within permitted hours and providing notice for unusual activities where required.
- Temporary barriers positioned between the sound source and affected homes.
A barrier works by interrupting the sound path. New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) describes an effective barrier as one that blocks line of sight between the source and receptors and has no gaps. That is project-side guidance in a specific municipal context, not a universal design rule or guarantee of silence. The same NYC page covers local rules, work hours, noise mitigation plans, and complaint information; check the current requirements for the project’s location at NYC DEP’s construction noise rules and regulations. The page noted monitoring requirements effective April 21, 2026, so confirm current details directly before relying on them.
When asking about a barrier, focus on whether the project has considered the sound path to nearby homes and whether the temporary structure is continuous where practicable. The NYC guidance highlights line of sight and gaps; it does not mean every barrier will work for every source or site. A barrier may not be feasible in every location, and the local authority or project plan—not a resident’s guess—determines applicable requirements. Avoid treating the NYC guidance as a rule outside New York City.
Ask for concrete information: what noise mitigation plan applies, which work hours are permitted, whether noisy equipment is enclosed, and how the project handles unusually disruptive work. If the issue is occurring outside the hours you were told to expect, record the time and the activity if known and confirm the local rule or complaint route. A schedule or complaint system found online for another city may not apply to your location.
Use indoor measures for comfort, not as a substitute for controls
Close windows when doing so is safe and compatible with your ventilation needs. Earplugs or earmuffs may make loud periods more tolerable for an individual, but they do not reduce the noise reaching the property or address vibration. OSHA’s noise material concerns worker protection; it should not be used as a residential exposure limit or as proof that a given level is safe at home. See OSHA’s occupational noise overview.

Hearing protection is therefore a limited, personal-comfort measure—not a building treatment or a way to demonstrate that a project is meeting local requirements. OSHA information is directed at occupational settings, so do not translate worker advice into a home noise threshold. If noise is disrupting you, you can use protection during a loud period while also asking the project contact or local authority about source controls, barriers, and permitted hours.
When should I worry about vibration from construction?
A sensation of shaking alone does not establish structural damage, and the available sources do not establish a universal household vibration threshold or a guaranteed consumer remedy. Pay attention to persistent vibration and observable changes rather than trying to diagnose a building from how the movement feels.
Vibration is different from airborne dust and noise: the indoor steps that may reduce particles or make sound more tolerable do not establish a way to stop movement transmitted through a building. The available sources do not identify a generally applicable household product that prevents construction vibration or a consumer meter that proves legal noncompliance. Treat a measurement or sensation as information to document, not as a diagnosis or verdict.
Keep a useful record
For each episode, write down the date, start and end time, duration, location in the building, and construction activity if known. Record observable effects, such as objects rattling or a new visible crack, and take dated photographs where relevant. Keep notes factual: distinguish what you saw from what you suspect caused it.
A useful log can include whether the vibration was a single event or recurring, which room or part of the building seemed affected, and whether anything visibly changed. If you do not know what work was taking place, say so rather than guessing. Dated photos can help preserve a record of a visible change, but a photo alone does not determine when a crack formed or what caused it. Share the notes with the person or office responsible for follow-up.
Escalate based on persistence or visible change
- For recurring or persistent vibration, contact building management or the project representative and share the dated log.
- If you suspect new damage, notify building management and the relevant local building or regulatory authority; ask what inspection or reporting process applies locally.
- If you see signs of immediate structural danger, leave the affected area if safe and follow local emergency procedures.
Do not assume that a floor mat, earplug, or consumer meter will prevent damage or establish legal noncompliance. A qualified acoustical or vibration professional may be appropriate for a serious or persistent problem, but what assessment is useful depends on the building, work, and local rules.

Escalation should match the concern. A recurring sensation without visible change is a reason to report the pattern and ask who can assess it; it is not by itself proof of damage. A suspected new crack is an observable change worth reporting, but do not claim the construction caused it without an assessment. If there appears to be immediate danger, prioritize safety and local emergency procedures rather than waiting for a routine project response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWho controls each solution?
The most useful first comparison is which pathway an action addresses, who has control, and what it can reasonably accomplish. Closing a window or using a room air cleaner is an indoor step aimed at particle entry or indoor particles; neither replaces site dust controls. Hearing protection may provide temporary comfort to one person; it does not quiet the source. Barriers and equipment controls belong to the project, while persistent vibration calls for observation and follow-up rather than a promised household fix.
| Concern | Resident can do | Project or authority may control | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dust | Close windows during dusty conditions; consider a room-sized portable air cleaner; use an HVAC filter only if compatible; document episodes. | Site dust controls, permit conditions, and enforcement by the relevant local or state authority. | Indoor steps may reduce particles but do not establish that site requirements are met or remove all dust. |
| Noise | Close windows when safe; use hearing protection for personal comfort during loud periods. | Equipment, work methods, barriers, mitigation plans, and permitted hours. | Rules vary by jurisdiction; worker noise guidance is not a residential limit. |
| Vibration | Keep a dated record of episodes and observable effects; report persistent movement or suspected damage. | Project response, building assessment, and local regulatory or emergency processes. | No general resident-facing threshold or guaranteed household remedy is established here. |
For dust, an indoor air cleaner and a compatible HVAC filter are different choices, not interchangeable guarantees: the former is a room-level appliance, while the latter relies on a home system and its specifications. For noise, a barrier is a path-interruption measure controlled by the project, while earplugs or earmuffs are worn by an individual. For vibration, no generally applicable household product is identified by the available sources; the practical resident action is to record events and seek the appropriate assessment when the problem persists or damage is suspected.
Cost and product comparisons should be made carefully. The official material cited here does not provide a common price range, a brand comparison, or a quantified performance guarantee for air cleaners, HVAC filters, barriers, or vibration services. Choose only on information relevant to your situation: room sizing and suitability for an air cleaner, system compatibility for an HVAC filter, or the project and local authority’s requirements for site measures. Do not infer that a more expensive consumer meter or protective product proves safety or compliance.
How to report a problem effectively
- Identify the responsible project. Use posted site information, building management, or the project representative to determine who is handling public concerns.
- Record what happened. For dust, note visible conditions and where it entered; for noise, note times and type of work if known; for vibration, include duration and observable effects. Photographs can help document visible dust or changes.
- Ask a specific question. For example: what dust controls are in place, what noise mitigation plan and work hours apply, or who can assess persistent vibration?
- Contact the appropriate local office if needed. Permitting, environmental, building, and noise complaint routes vary by jurisdiction. Consult your city or regional authority rather than assuming another location’s process applies.
- Escalate urgent conditions appropriately. Suspected immediate structural danger is different from a routine nuisance complaint; follow local emergency procedures if safety may be at risk.
When reporting, keep the three impacts separate even if they happen at the same time. A note about visible dust is useful for a dust-control question; a record of start and end times helps describe a noise episode; and details about rattling objects or visible changes are relevant to a vibration concern. Include what you know and identify what you do not know. This avoids confusing an observation with a conclusion and helps the recipient route the report to the right person.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep construction dust out of my house?
Close windows and exterior doors while dust is visibly present or outdoor particles are elevated, if doing so is safe. A room-sized portable air cleaner may help reduce indoor particles. Use a higher-efficiency HVAC filter only if the system manufacturer’s guidance or a qualified professional confirms it is compatible. These steps may reduce particles but cannot guarantee that construction dust will be eliminated.
Should I buy a HEPA air cleaner or change my HVAC filter?
They address indoor particles in different ways. A portable air cleaner is a room-level option; an HVAC filter depends on your existing system and its specifications. Check room suitability for the portable unit and compatibility before changing the HVAC filter. The cited sources do not identify a universally best model, price, or performance level.
Can I make nearby construction quieter indoors?
Closing windows when safe and compatible with ventilation needs may help, and earplugs or earmuffs may make a loud period more tolerable for an individual. For changes to noise at the source or along its path, ask the project about equipment enclosures, work methods, barriers, and permitted hours. Local rules vary; OSHA worker guidance is not a residential noise limit.
When should I worry about vibration from construction?
A shaking sensation alone does not establish structural damage, and there is no universal resident vibration threshold or guaranteed household remedy established here. Keep a dated log of times, duration, location, known work, and observable effects. Report persistent vibration or suspected damage to building management, the project representative, or the relevant local authority. For apparent immediate danger, follow local emergency procedures.
Who do I contact about construction dust, noise, or vibration?
Start with posted site information, building management, or the project representative. If you need to check dust requirements, contact the relevant local or state environmental authority or permitting office; noise and building complaint routes depend on your location. Record what happened and ask which local reporting process applies rather than relying on another city’s rules.
The Bottom Line
Use indoor steps to reduce dust entry and improve personal comfort, but do not mistake them for site controls. Ask the project or local authority about dust requirements, noise mitigation, and permitted hours. For persistent vibration or suspected damage, keep a factual dated record and seek local follow-up; no universal household fix or resident vibration threshold is established here.
