How to Recycle Concrete, Bricks and Rubble From a Renovation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sort it before you load it, salvage what can be used again, and send the remaining clean mineral waste to an outlet that accepts inert construction material. Keep concrete, bricks, tiles and stone separate from plasterboard, timber, soil, plastics and metals. Never put suspected asbestos or other hazardous material into an ordinary rubble skip. For small quantities, a council facility or licensed construction-and-demolition (C&D) recycler may be simplest; larger loads can justify an inert-waste skip, roll-off container or permitted crushing contractor. The correct choice depends on the material’s cleanliness, volume, transport distance and the rules where you live.

Start by sorting the waste at the point of removal

Recycling works best when mineral waste is separated before it is mixed with other renovation debris. A mixed skip can be more expensive to process and may be rejected if it contains too much contamination. Set up clearly marked areas before demolition begins and keep the cleanest materials closest to the loading point.

Make four practical piles

  1. Items for direct reuse: intact bricks, pavers, coping stones, slabs and sound architectural pieces.
  2. Clean mineral rubble: concrete, broken bricks, tiles, ceramics and natural stone with no visible soil, plasterboard, timber, plastic, insulation or metal attached.
  3. Other renovation waste: wood, plasterboard, packaging, soil, green waste, plastics and metals. Keep each stream separate where your local facility requires it.
  4. Suspected hazardous material: asbestos-containing products, chemically contaminated debris, lead-painted fragments or any material you cannot identify safely. Isolate it and obtain specialist advice instead of adding it to normal rubble.

Remove loose timber, plastic, cable, pipework and insulation from concrete and brick as you work. A small amount of harmless dust is normal, but visible plasterboard, soil or household rubbish can change which outlet will accept the load. Wear suitable gloves, eye protection and a dust-control mask for the work; avoid dry cutting or crushing that creates unnecessary airborne dust.

Protect reusable pieces

Lift whole bricks and paving units rather than dropping them into a pile. Stack them on pallets or firm ground, keep them covered from mud and label different sizes or colours. Photograph unusual bricks, mouldings and stone before cleaning so their original position and dimensions are recorded for a salvage buyer or future repair.

Know what counts as concrete, brick and inert rubble

“Inert” generally means mineral waste that does not significantly dissolve, burn or react under normal disposal conditions. Acceptance rules still vary, so confirm them with the facility before hiring a container. England’s waste classification guidance uses these codes:

Material stream England waste code Typical examples Important preparation point
Concrete 17 01 01 Broken slabs, foundations, beams and plain concrete Remove reinforcing steel, timber, insulation, sealants and visible soil where required.
Bricks 17 01 02 Clay bricks, engineering bricks and brick slips Separate sound units for reuse; keep mortar, plaster and paint contamination within the outlet’s limits.
Non-hazardous mixed mineral waste 17 01 07 Mixtures of concrete, bricks, tiles and ceramics Use only when the recycler confirms it accepts a mixed mineral load; do not include hazardous substances.

These codes are England-specific examples, not a universal disposal language. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, other European countries, the United States and elsewhere may use different codes or classifications. Give the facility a description of the actual contents, not simply “rubble,” so it can confirm the correct stream.

Choose reuse before recycling

Recycling usually means crushing mineral waste into aggregate. Reuse keeps an item at a higher value and avoids the energy and transport associated with processing it. Inspect bricks, pavers and stone before breaking them up.

Bricks and stone that can be used whole

Clean, intact clay bricks can serve in garden walls, repairs, interior partitions, paving and hardscaping. Stone slabs and pavers may be reused for paths, retaining features or landscaping if they remain structurally sound. An architectural salvage yard, local reuse organisation, contractor or community project may take pieces that are unsuitable for your own work.

UNOPS notes that clay bricks laid dry or with lime mortar can often be cleaned and reused for interior partitions, paving and hardscaping. Bricks bonded with hard cement mortar are more difficult to clean without damage; they are commonly repurposed as gabion fill or landscaping material, or crushed for aggregate. Do not assume that every old brick is suitable for a load-bearing wall: a structural designer should specify any new structural use.

How to assess and clean reusable bricks

  • Reject bricks that are cracked through, badly spalled, contaminated with oil or chemically stained.
  • Separate sizes, colours and historic or handmade units so they can be matched later.
  • Brush off loose mortar carefully. Aggressive chiselling can destroy arrises and reduce salvage value.
  • Keep cleaned bricks dry and off muddy ground. Record approximate quantities and dimensions.
  • For lime-mortar bricks, preserve as much of the original unit as possible; for cement-mortar bricks, consider landscaping or aggregate use if cleaning would cause excessive breakage.

Compare outlets before you book a container

Call two or three local options with the same description of your material. Ask about contamination tolerances, minimum quantities, opening hours, weighing, documentation and the final use of the material. The cheapest haulage price is not necessarily the lowest total cost if a load is rejected or reclassified.

Outlet Best suited to Questions to ask Likely result
Local council recycling or civic amenity facility Small, homeowner-generated quantities Does it accept concrete and bricks from household renovations? Is there a vehicle or trailer limit? Are charges or booking rules applied? Material is transferred for recovery or recycling under local arrangements.
Licensed C&D recycler or transfer station Separated loads and repeat or larger quantities What mineral streams are accepted? What contamination percentage is allowed? Is the fee based on weight, volume or a minimum load? Material is sorted and usually crushed into recycled aggregate.
Inert-waste skip One renovation project with predictable clean rubble Is the container restricted to inert waste? What happens if plasterboard, soil or general waste is found? Is the quoted service inclusive of delivery, collection and disposal? Haulier takes the load to an approved inert or C&D facility.
Roll-off container High-volume demolition or commercial work Can the site support the vehicle? What is the maximum payload and hire period? Is the load ticketed or weighed? Large, segregated loads are transported in fewer journeys.
Permitted crushing contractor Large quantities where recycled aggregate will be used on the same site Which exemption or permit covers the activity? Will the output meet a recognised quality protocol? Where may the aggregate legally be used? On-site or mobile processing produces graded aggregate, subject to regulatory and specification limits.
Architectural salvage or reuse outlet Intact bricks, pavers, stone and distinctive features Does it buy, consign or accept donations? How must pieces be palletised and cleaned? Items are sold or redistributed for direct reuse rather than crushed.

Prepare the load and transport it legally

  1. Confirm acceptance in writing. Save the facility’s email or booking confirmation describing “clean concrete,” “clean bricks” or the agreed mixed mineral stream.
  2. Estimate quantity. Tell the operator whether the material is in bags, a small trailer, a skip or a roll-off. Dense concrete can exceed vehicle payload limits before a container looks full.
  3. Keep streams separate. Do not top a clean mineral skip with timber, plasterboard or household rubbish. Use separate containers if the outlet requires it.
  4. Load safely. Distribute weight evenly, keep the centre of gravity low and secure loose pieces. Cover an open load to prevent dust and debris escaping during transport.
  5. Plan site access. Check overhead cables, gates, road width, turning space and ground strength before a skip or roll-off arrives. Protect paving and underground services from concentrated loads.
  6. Retain records. Keep weighbridge tickets, waste transfer notes, receipts and photographs of the sorted piles. They help resolve a rejected-load dispute and demonstrate where commercial renovation waste went.

A licensed waste carrier may be required for business or construction waste. Household rules can differ, but using an authorised carrier protects you from fly-tipping liability. Ask the council or environmental regulator what registration and documentation apply to your address and project type.

Decide whether a skip, roll-off or crushing service makes sense

Use an inert skip for modest, clean quantities

An inert-waste skip is convenient when rubble is generated over several days and the site has room for a container. Confirm that the hire is genuinely for inert material: a general mixed-waste skip may cost more, while an inert-only service may reject plasterboard or soil. Ask how overfilling, contamination and extra collection days are charged.

Use a roll-off for sustained or high-volume work

Roll-off containers reduce the number of collections on larger projects, but they need suitable access and a stable set-down area. Clarify maximum payload, weight limits on the delivery route and whether the quoted price includes a minimum tonnage. Never assume a visually half-full container is within the vehicle’s legal weight.

Consider a crushing contractor only at sufficient scale

On-site crushing can reduce haulage and provide aggregate for the same project, but mobilisation, testing, dust control, noise, space and regulatory approvals can outweigh those benefits on a small renovation. Obtain a written scope covering feedstock, crushing and screening, stockpile management, testing, removal of metals and the permitted end use of the output.

Understand the rules for crushing in England

The Environment Agency’s T5 exemption covers certain screening, blending and grading activities. It does not automatically authorise crushing waste tiles, bricks or concrete. The Agency states that crushing these materials is handled under the related T7 exemption. The operator must check whether an exemption is available, whether a permit is required and whether the activity meets limits on location, quantity, equipment and duration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crushing does not by itself make the output a product. The treated material may need to meet a quality protocol, be used under another exemption or permit, and satisfy the specification for the construction job. Ask the contractor to identify the legal route before work starts and to state where the aggregate may be placed. If the material contains hazardous substances, neither a standard T5 nor T7 approach makes it acceptable.

Use recycled aggregate only where the specification allows

Crushed concrete and brick can be suitable for road sub-base, temporary paths, drainage layers, backfill, hardstanding and other construction uses when the grading, cleanliness, strength and drainage characteristics meet the project specification. The appropriate use depends on particle size, fines, moisture, contamination and whether the material is mixed.

  • Follow the engineer’s or local authority’s specification for thickness, compaction and drainage.
  • Keep recycled aggregate away from damp-proof courses, service ducts and finished surfaces unless its properties are confirmed for that application.
  • Do not place untested crushed rubble beneath a structural slab, retaining wall or foundation.
  • Check for brick or concrete fines that could migrate into drains or reduce permeability.
  • Store separate grades on a clean, stable surface so they do not become mixed with soil.

European Union waste policy promotes selective demolition and source sorting so hazardous substances can be removed and mineral fractions can be reused or recycled at higher quality. EU waste law calls for sorting systems for concrete, bricks, tiles, ceramics and stone. Those policy goals do not replace local planning, waste, building-control or environmental requirements for a particular site.

Stop if asbestos or another hazardous substance is suspected

Asbestos-containing construction materials and mixtures containing hazardous substances are treated as hazardous in the cited UK guidance. Possible examples include textured coatings, insulation boards, old cement sheets, sprayed materials and contaminated demolition debris. You cannot identify asbestos reliably by sight alone.

  1. Stop work in the affected area and keep people away.
  2. Do not sweep, drill, break, load or crush the suspect material.
  3. Prevent fibres or dust spreading; do not put the material in a normal skip.
  4. Contact a competent asbestos professional or the relevant regulator for sampling, removal, packaging and disposal requirements.
  5. Tell the rubble facility about the incident before delivering any associated load.

The same stop-and-check approach applies to oil-soaked concrete, chemical residues, unknown powders, lead-contaminated paint debris or any load that no longer matches the description given to the recycler.

Check the rules for your country and project type

The waste codes and T5/T7 discussion above are England-specific. European projects should also check national implementation of EU waste rules, local permits and end-of-waste criteria. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency defines construction and demolition materials as debris generated during construction, renovation and demolition of buildings, roads and bridges, and reported that 600 million tons of C&D debris were generated in 2018. That figure is a national estimate for that year, not a prediction for an individual project.

US state and municipal programs can differ on inert fill, asbestos, transport, crushing and beneficial-use approvals. Elsewhere, terminology such as “clean fill,” “inert waste” and “recycled aggregate” may have different legal meanings. Before loading, ask your municipality or environmental authority:

  • Which materials are accepted as clean concrete, brick or mixed mineral rubble?
  • What contamination or asbestos controls apply?
  • Does a household renovation differ from commercial construction waste?
  • Are waste-carrier registration, transfer notes, permits or testing required?
  • Can recycled aggregate be used on your site, and for which applications?

Common problems and how to fix them

The recycler says the load is contaminated

Ask for the specific contaminant and whether the load can be hand-sorted, reclassified or redirected. If the facility cannot accept it, arrange a licensed alternative rather than abandoning the material. For future loads, use separate small containers for plasterboard, timber and soil from the first day of demolition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The skip is too heavy

Concrete and saturated rubble are dense. Stop adding material if the container, vehicle or access route is approaching its limit. Ask the haulier for a weight-based option, a smaller container or an additional collection instead of overloading one vehicle.

Bricks break during cleaning

Separate the intact units immediately and change from aggressive chiselling to gentler hand cleaning. If the remaining bricks are not economically salvageable, classify them as clean brick rubble and send them for crushing, provided they contain no hazardous contamination.

You want to crush on site but cannot confirm the exemption

Do not start the machine. Obtain written advice from the environmental regulator or use a contractor who can identify the applicable T7 exemption, permit, quality protocol and end use. A verbal assumption that “it is only rubble” is not a compliance plan.

A practical renovation checklist

  • Survey for asbestos and other hazardous materials before demolition.
  • Set up separate, labelled areas for salvage, clean mineral waste and other debris.
  • Remove timber, plasterboard, plastics, metals, soil and insulation from concrete and brick.
  • Photograph and protect intact bricks, pavers and stone for possible reuse.
  • Describe the exact material and estimated quantity to each facility.
  • Compare council facilities, licensed recyclers, inert skips, roll-offs and salvage outlets.
  • Confirm contamination limits, minimum loads, fees, access requirements and documentation.
  • Use a registered or otherwise authorised carrier where local law requires one.
  • For crushing, verify T7 or the applicable local permit before equipment arrives.
  • Use recycled aggregate only for applications allowed by the project specification and local rules.
  • Keep receipts, transfer notes, weighbridge tickets and any test results with the project records.
