How to Read Delta Membrane Tensile and Compressive Loads for Structural Waterproofing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: tensile and compressive ratings describe different, laboratory-tested responses of a membrane material. Tensile data describe pulling in specified directions; compressive data describe pressure under a stated test procedure and usually a stated duration. Neither figure, by itself, proves that a waterproofing assembly can carry a foundation, retain soil, or support any part of a building. For a project decision, keep the exact membrane, test standard, installation arrangement, load duration, and project drawings together, then have a qualified design professional verify the assembly.

What tensile and compressive loads actually describe

A waterproofing sheet can be pulled, squeezed, punctured, folded, or forced to move as the surrounding construction settles. “Tensile strength” and “compressive strength” address only two of those responses, and they are not interchangeable safety ratings.

Tensile strength is resistance to pulling

A tensile test pulls a prepared strip until it reaches a specified condition, often the maximum force before rupture. Sheet products are commonly reported in two directions: the machine direction (the direction in which the sheet was manufactured) and the cross-machine direction (across the sheet). Polymer orientation, reinforcement, dimple geometry, seams, and temperature can make the two directions behave differently.

For that reason, a single tensile number is incomplete. A specification should identify the product, the direction, the unit, the test standard, and the test conditions. A value reported as force per width, such as N/5 cm, cannot be read as a pressure in kN/m² without knowing the test geometry and the width represented.

Compression is resistance to pressure or crushing

Compression testing presses the membrane between loading surfaces. The result depends on the test procedure, support conditions, dimple or profile geometry, displacement at the reported point, and whether the load is applied briefly or held. A short-term compression result is not automatically a sustained-load or creep design value.

In a foundation, soil pressure may act for years. A membrane may also be squeezed locally at a footing, joint, fastener, board edge, or uneven stone. Those field actions are not reproduced by every material test. Treat a published compression figure as evidence of the tested material response, not as permission to substitute the sheet for structural concrete, reinforcement, shoring, or a designed drainage layer.

What the DELTA-TERRAXX data sheet says

Dörken describes DELTA-TERRAXX as a protection and drainage membrane for vertical and horizontal uses. Its US technical data sheet reports tensile data in the machine and cross-machine directions under EN ISO 10319 and a compressive-strength or short-term compression result of approximately 400 kN/m² under EN ISO 25619-2. The current sheet, including its table conditions and revision, should be checked before a number is copied into a specification: DELTA-TERRAXX US technical data sheet.

Property What is reported How to use it
Compression Approximately 400 kN/m²; short-term compression behavior tested to EN ISO 25619-2 in the cited US sheet Use only for the tested product and conditions. Do not convert it into a sustained soil-load allowance without project engineering.
Tension Machine-direction and cross-machine-direction results tested to EN ISO 10319; the exact directional figures and conditions must be taken from the current sheet Check orientation, seams, overlaps, penetrations, and installation details rather than applying one number in every direction.
Function Protection and drainage membrane for vertical and horizontal applications Confirm that the drainage, filtration, waterproofing, and protection functions match the specified assembly.

Why the test standard belongs beside the number

EN ISO 25619-2 and EN ISO 10319 define different test actions. A compression result cannot answer a tensile question, and a tensile result cannot establish resistance to earth pressure. The standard also helps an engineer understand the specimen, loading rate, support, and reported endpoint. If a later revision changes a method, table condition, or product construction, the number may no longer be directly comparable.

Keep the product name and method together in project records, for example: “DELTA-TERRAXX, compression result reported under EN ISO 25619-2, current US data-sheet revision.” Avoid quoting “400 kN/m²” without that context.

Why a membrane rating is not a structural design approval

A product test normally isolates a sample. A building waterproofing system includes the membrane, substrate, drainage path, protection board or concrete, fasteners or adhesives, laps, corners, penetrations, terminations, backfill, and the structure behind it. Load can bypass the sheet, concentrate at a small defect, or change as the soil becomes wet and settles.

  • It is not a foundation capacity. The membrane does not replace bearing calculations, retaining-wall design, reinforcement, or temporary excavation support.
  • It is not a waterproofing guarantee. A sheet can retain its material strength while a seam, penetration, termination, or damaged dimple leaks.
  • It is not automatically a long-term value. A short-duration test does not establish creep, stress relaxation, aging, chemical exposure, freeze-thaw performance, or a permanent allowable load.
  • It is not an assembly test. The result does not prove performance over a rough substrate, over insulation, against concrete, or beneath a particular backfill unless that arrangement is specifically evaluated.

Project documents should therefore define the load case and the complete installation. A qualified designer can determine whether the membrane is acting as protection and drainage only or whether another component has a formally designed structural role.

Do not substitute related DELTA products by number

Products in the same family can have different profiles, backing, intended orientations, and functions. The figures below are published for different products and must not be transferred to DELTA-TERRAXX or treated as interchangeable.

Product Stated application in the cited material Published property Important qualification
DELTA-MS Perimeter-insulation protection, blinding-layer, and drainage uses Approximately 250 kN/m² compressive strength The cited product page does not establish that this value uses the same test conditions as the DELTA-TERRAXX sheet.
DELTA-PT Plaster-base sheet for cellar and tunnel walls Approximately 70 kN/m² compressive strength; approximately 400 N/5 cm tensile strength This is a plaster-base application, not a directly interchangeable foundation drainage membrane; the cited page does not state a tensile test method in the supplied material.

The table is useful for identifying why product selection must start with the application, not the largest-looking number. A lower or higher value may reflect a different geometry or a different job entirely.

How to select and specify a membrane for a real project

  1. Define the water problem. Record whether the wall needs positive-side waterproofing, drainage relief, capillary separation, protection of a separate waterproofing layer, or a combination. Identify vertical and horizontal areas separately.
  2. Describe the substrate. Note cast concrete, masonry, insulation, shotcrete, compacted granular material, or another base. Record surface roughness, protrusions, joints, cracks, and any repair mortar that could concentrate pressure.
  3. Establish the load case. Obtain soil unit weight, backfill height, groundwater level, surcharge, construction traffic, and any hydrostatic or lateral pressure from the project engineer. State whether each action is temporary, construction-stage, cyclic, or sustained.
  4. Match the product and orientation. Confirm that the selected sheet is approved for the wall or slab orientation, drainage direction, exposure, and intended protection duty. Do not use a product-family value as a substitute for the specified sheet.
  5. Read the current data sheet completely. Capture tensile directions, compression method, units, specimen or table conditions, drainage capacity, filtration details, temperature limits, and any installation restrictions. Save the revision used for the submittal.
  6. Design laps and transitions. Detail corners, inside and outside angles, penetrations, pipe boots, terminations, sump connections, and transitions between horizontal and vertical work. The membrane’s strip tensile result does not design these details.
  7. Define protection during backfill. Specify acceptable backfill gradation, placement sequence, compaction equipment, and inspection. Prevent torn sheets, crushed dimples, open laps, and debris trapped behind the membrane.
  8. Obtain approval from the responsible designer. Have the architect, waterproofing designer, geotechnical engineer, or structural engineer of record confirm compatibility and adequacy for the documented project conditions.

Field conditions that can change the result

Direction and detailing

Installers should know which sheet direction corresponds to the machine direction when directional tensile data matter. A corner can impose a different strain path from a flat panel. Cutouts, fasteners, and penetrations reduce the effective load path, while poorly aligned overlaps can peel under movement even when the sheet itself has adequate strip strength.

Substrate and contact

A smooth, continuous substrate distributes contact more evenly than sharp aggregate, honeycombed concrete, or an unfilled joint. Where the membrane is intended to protect another waterproofing layer, the protection layer must remain continuous through construction. A local point load can damage a dimple or puncture a sheet without approaching the nominal area-wide pressure used in a laboratory test.

Drainage and filtration

Drainage capacity is a separate performance question from compression. A membrane may survive pressure yet fail to relieve water if soil fines clog the drainage path, the outlet is blocked, or the sheet is installed in the wrong orientation. Verify the specified filter, outlet, cleanout, and connection details as a system.

Duration, temperature, and construction stage

Backfilling can create a short, high construction load that differs from the lower but sustained pressure after completion. Polymer stiffness can also vary with temperature. Unless the product literature supplies a suitable long-term or creep evaluation, do not infer one from a short-term compression figure. Ask the project designer what reduction factors or separate checks are required.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Comparing unlike units: kN/m² is pressure or force per area; N/5 cm is force per strip width. Put the unit and test geometry in every schedule.
  • Using a family name instead of a product name: replace “DELTA sheet” with the exact designation and current data-sheet revision.
  • Ignoring direction: list machine and cross-machine results separately when the sheet is cut or installed directionally.
  • Calling a short-term value allowable sustained load: identify the duration actually tested and obtain a long-term assessment when the design load persists.
  • Designing from the membrane alone: calculate the full waterproofing and structural assembly, including joints, drains, protection, substrate, and backfill.
  • Backfilling without inspection: photograph laps and penetrations, check for punctures and crushed profiles, and repair defects using the manufacturer’s approved method before concealment.

Information to place in the submittal or design review

A useful review package lets the designer trace every value to its application. Include:

  • Exact product designation, market or country version, and data-sheet revision date.
  • Compression value with its test standard, loading condition, and whether it is short-term or sustained.
  • Tensile values for both relevant directions, with unit, test standard, and specimen conditions.
  • Wall or slab orientation, substrate description, installation depth, groundwater and soil assumptions, and backfill specification.
  • Drawings for laps, corners, penetrations, terminations, drainage outlets, and interfaces with other waterproofing components.
  • Inspection, repair, and protection procedures before concrete placement or backfill.

If a required item is absent from the current product literature, mark it as “not stated” and obtain clarification rather than filling the gap with a value from another membrane.

Practical decision rule

Use DELTA-TERRAXX’s published figures to understand the tested material response and to screen whether the product belongs in a proposed protection-and-drainage assembly. Do not use those figures as a universal load rating. The final choice depends on the intended application, test method, substrate, installation depth, drainage and filtration duties, load duration, and compatibility with the rest of the waterproofing system. Project documentation and the qualified design professional remain the authority for structural adequacy.
