A roof truss placement plan is an overhead map showing where each specifically identified truss is intended to sit. To use it safely, orient the plan to the building, read its legend and dimensions, match every truss mark to the delivered pieces, and then verify bearings, hangers, connections and bracing against the companion project documents. The plan is project-specific: manufacturers do not all use identical labels or include the same schedules.
What a roof truss placement plan tells you
The Structural Building Components Association (SBCA) defines a truss placement diagram as an illustration identifying the assumed location for each individually designated truss, based on the truss manufacturer’s interpretation of the construction documents. That definition explains both the plan’s value and its limit. It is a location and coordination document, not a universal code diagram and not the individual engineering drawing for every truss.

The drawing normally uses a plan view, as if the roof were removed and viewed from above. Lines, outlines and marks show the building perimeter, bearing walls or beams, openings and the intended positions of the trusses. A mark such as T1, T2 or another manufacturer-selected designation identifies a particular truss or truss type at a particular location. The same-looking mark on a different project can mean something else, so the legend and the project package control.

Gather the documents before you interpret the drawing
Reading one sheet in isolation is the quickest way to install a truss in the wrong place. Put the complete job package together first and check that the revision or issue information agrees across the sheets.
| Document | What to use it for | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Truss placement plan | Locate each designated truss, read orientation, dimensions, spacing callouts and any shown bearings, hangers or special locations. | Individual truss design drawings or project-specific connection and bracing instructions. |
| Individual truss design drawing | Identify the geometry and design information for a particular truss; use it for lateral-bracing locations and multi-ply connection requirements. | The overall roof layout and the field location of every truss. |
| Building or structural plans | Confirm grid lines, wall and beam locations, openings, elevations and the designer’s intended load path. | The manufacturer’s detailed truss geometry. |
| Delivery list and truss marks | Match physical pieces to the marks on the placement plan and identify missing, extra or damaged components. | Approval of a substitute truss or a field-modified member. |
| Installation, restraint and bracing guidance | Provide the safe sequence and temporary or permanent restraint information applicable to the supplied trusses. | A project-specific placement plan or design drawing. |
Keep the latest approved set at the work area. If the plan, delivery marks and building conditions do not agree, stop at that location and ask the truss manufacturer and the building designer for a written resolution before proceeding.
Step 1: Establish orientation and the plan’s reference system
Start with the sheet title, project name, revision, scale or stated dimensions, north arrow if present, and any grid or end-wall references. Identify which edge of the drawing corresponds to the front, rear, left and right sides of the actual building. A plan can be rotated on the jobsite; the sheet’s orientation is not automatically the same as the way a crew is standing.
Find the outside dimensions and the main bearing lines. Trace the walls, beams, girder locations and large openings that appear on both the placement plan and the building plans. Do not use a ruler to invent a dimension when a written dimension is available. If the drawing is printed at a different size, its graphic scale may no longer be reliable; use stated dimensions and project control lines instead.

Use the legend before reading individual marks
The legend explains abbreviations, line styles, arrows, section references and any symbols used for hangers, bearings or special trusses. Read every note that qualifies the drawing. A symbol that looks like a wall may represent a bearing line, while a heavier line may identify a girder or a truss supporting other members. The manufacturer’s legend has priority over a symbol remembered from another plan.
Step 2: Decode truss labels and locate each piece
Work through the plan one designation at a time. Find the mark, read the adjacent note or schedule entry, and follow its position relative to the bearing lines and dimensions. Then find the same mark on the delivered truss, tag or bundle. This three-way match—plan mark, physical truss and building location—prevents a visually similar piece from being installed in the wrong bay.
Marks may identify a single truss, a repeated truss type or a special condition such as an end, girder, valley or truncated truss. The drawing’s notes determine which interpretation applies. Never assume that sequential marks mean sequential placement, that a suffix has the same meaning on every job, or that two members with similar dimensions are interchangeable.

A practical marking routine
- Highlight or list every unique designation shown on the placement plan.
- For each designation, record its bay, bearing lines, orientation and any note or detail reference.
- Locate the corresponding mark on the delivery paperwork and on the physical truss. Keep marks legible; do not rely on memory after bundles are moved.
- Set aside any piece with a missing, conflicting or unreadable mark. Ask for identification rather than guessing.
- After a truss is set, confirm that its mark and location still agree with the plan before moving to the next one.
Step 3: Read dimensions and on-center spacing
Dimension strings show distances between reference lines, walls, beams, openings or truss locations. Read from the dimension’s extension lines and arrows, not from the apparent length of the printed line. Note whether a dimension is to a face, centerline or another stated reference. If the plan gives an on-center spacing, use that stated value and its reference direction; do not infer a universal spacing from a generic roof example.

Spacing can change at an end condition, around an opening or where a special truss is used. A plan may show a general spacing note plus individual dimensions that govern an exception. When those appear to conflict, do not average them or move a bearing to make the arithmetic work. Mark the conflict and obtain clarification from the responsible designer or manufacturer.
Compare the truss layout with the building plan’s wall and beam dimensions. A small apparent offset can indicate a different reference line, a changed revision or a field condition that has not been incorporated into the drawing. Resolve the reason before setting the affected trusses.
Step 4: Confirm bearings, hangers and connection callouts
Every truss must bear where the project intends it to bear. On the placement plan, look for bearing symbols, wall or beam labels, hanger references and notes about special supports. Check those locations against the structural or building plans and the actual framed walls. A wall that is out of position, an opening that is the wrong width or a beam that is not installed can change the support condition.

What to record while checking supports
- Which wall, beam or girder supports each end of the truss.
- Whether a hanger, seat, bearing block or other specified hardware is shown or scheduled.
- Any special end condition, dropped bearing, step-down or offset identified by a note.
- Whether the supporting member is present, plumb, at the stated elevation and free of an opening at the bearing point.
- Which drawing or detail governs if the placement plan and building plan use different references.
Step 5: Separate placement information from bracing and multi-ply requirements
A placement plan tells you where the designated trusses go. It does not, by itself, provide every restraint or bracing instruction. SBCA directs readers to individual truss design drawings for lateral-bracing locations and multi-ply connection requirements. Those drawings and the project’s installation guidance must be available to the crew before work begins.
Do not infer lateral-brace locations from the web pattern, copy a brace arrangement from another roof or assume that fastening adjacent plies together creates a compliant multi-ply connection. Follow the marked requirements for the actual truss and ask the project team about any detail that is absent, illegible or inconsistent.
SBCA identifies the BCSI 2025 guide as its current edition. It provides recommendations for handling, installation, restraint and bracing of metal-plate-connected wood trusses. It is useful background for planning a safe installation, but it is not a substitute for the project’s placement plan, individual design drawings or building-designer decisions.
Step 6: Compare the paper plan with the delivered trusses
Make the delivery inspection part of plan reading, not an afterthought. Before lifting, walk the bundles and compare marks, quantities and visible condition with the placement information. Separate pieces that are damaged, altered, wet enough to obscure marks or otherwise questionable. A missing or damaged truss is a coordination issue; it is not an invitation to modify another truss.

Use the plan’s location as the deciding factor when several pieces look alike. Check orientation indicators, heels, profiles and special cuts against the individual design drawing where needed. If a delivered mark is not on the plan, or a plan mark is not in the delivery, document the discrepancy and hold the affected work.
Worked example: following an illustrative label
Suppose a plan uses the illustrative marks T1 through T6 along a bearing wall, with a separate mark for a girder truss. The labels and spacing in this example are not a standard; they simply demonstrate the reading method.
- Orient the sheet so the bearing wall and opposite wall match the framed building.
- Use the legend to identify the line representing the bearing wall and the symbol for the girder.
- Follow the dimension string to the first truss location and read the mark printed there.
- Find that mark on the delivery tag and physical truss, checking that its profile agrees with the individual drawing.
- Repeat for each location, paying special attention where the girder or an opening interrupts the regular pattern.
- Before setting the group, verify the support and hanger information at the girder and compare it with the building designer’s connection requirements.
If the fifth delivered piece is marked T4 but the plan location calls for T5, stop and reconcile the marks. Do not solve the mismatch by swapping pieces solely because their shapes appear similar.
Installation-day workflow
- Brief the crew. Review the placement plan, individual truss drawings, installation guidance, hazard controls and the procedure for asking questions.
- Establish control lines. Confirm building dimensions, bearing locations, elevations and any revisions before unloading into the final work area.
- Stage by designation. Keep marks visible and arrange trusses in an order that follows the plan without blocking access or creating an unstable stack.
- Verify the first location. Recheck orientation, bearing and connection information before setting the first truss or girder.
- Maintain temporary restraint. Use the project’s installation and bracing guidance while the roof system is incomplete; do not rely on the finished roof to stabilize an unbraced assembly.
- Check progressively. After each section, compare installed marks, spacing and bearings with the plan. Catching an error before the next bay is loaded limits rework.
- Document unresolved items. Photograph or record the location and mark, then obtain direction from the manufacturer and building designer before continuing in the affected area.
Common reading errors and their fixes
| Symptom | Likely reading problem | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| A truss appears to fit but does not match the mark. | The crew selected by shape rather than designation. | Return to the plan, delivery mark and individual drawing; hold the piece until identified. |
| Regular spacing runs into an opening. | A general spacing note was treated as universal. | Check individual dimensions and special-location notes; obtain clarification for the exception. |
| A bearing lands on an opening or misses a beam. | The plan was not compared with current framing or the wrong reference line was used. | Stop, verify revisions and have the designer resolve the support condition. |
| A hanger or connection detail is missing. | An optional schedule or detail was assumed to be present. | Search the companion documents and request the project-specific requirement; do not select hardware by guesswork. |
| The crew asks where to brace a truss. | The placement plan was mistaken for the individual design drawing. | Use the individual truss drawing and installation guidance for lateral bracing and multi-ply connections. |
| Two sheets show different labels or dimensions. | Different revisions or document sets are being used. | Quarantine the affected work, identify the current set and obtain written confirmation of the governing information. |
When to stop and request professional clarification
Pause installation whenever a label, bearing condition, delivered component or site condition conflicts with the documents. Also stop when a truss is damaged, a support is missing, a field change has altered the roof geometry or the crew cannot identify the applicable bracing or connection detail. The safe response is to describe the exact location and discrepancy to the truss manufacturer and building designer, then follow their direction. Cutting, drilling, relocating a bearing or substituting a truss without approval can change the intended load path.
This guide explains how to read documents; it does not approve a structural design or replace an inspection. The placement plan reflects the manufacturer’s interpretation of the construction documents. Project-specific connections and bracing remain subject to the accompanying design drawings and review by the appropriate building-design professional.
