To reduce back strain while raking, keep your back upright, knees slightly bent and rake close to your body. Use short strokes, step with the movement instead of twisting, and take breaks before fatigue sets in. These habits can lower the load on your back, but they cannot guarantee you will avoid pain or injury.
Before you start raking
Check whether you need medical guidance
If you have a history of heart, lung, bone, joint or spine problems, Johns Hopkins Medicine advises asking a healthcare provider for guidance before raking. Raking involves repeated reaching, bending, twisting, lifting and carrying, so pace yourself and take your own health and ability into account.
Warm up and prepare the yard
Start with gentle movement and stretching; do not force a stretch that hurts. Wear gloves and sturdy shoes with slip-resistant soles, and take care on wet leaves, which can be slippery. Clear a manageable work area so you do not have to reach far or carry large loads.
Choose a manageable rake
Pick a rake that feels comfortable, is in good repair and is not too heavy or too short for you. Washington University Occupational Therapy Services suggests considering a cushioned handle and a length suited to your height. These are comfort and fit considerations, not a guarantee against strain.

How to rake with less back strain
Set a balanced stance
Stand upright with your knees slightly bent and one foot a little ahead of the other. Keep the rake near your body and use short strokes. Reaching far away repeatedly can increase the effort on your back and shoulders.
Move your feet instead of twisting
As you pull leaves toward you, step or shift your weight with the work. Avoid repeatedly twisting through your lower back or throwing leaves over a shoulder. Change which hand and foot lead every few minutes so one side does not do all the work.

- 17" wider rake head makes heavy raking in your backyard easier and will rake the tall grass in the orchard even on the uneven ground.

Set a pace you can sustain
Raking is repetitive physical work, not a task to power through once you are tired. Cleveland Clinic suggests taking a break about every 20 to 30 minutes and splitting a large job across multiple days if needed. Treat that interval as a practical suggestion, not a medical threshold: rest sooner if you need to. Stop or take a break if pain or discomfort begins.
Picking up and moving leaves
When gathering leaves, bend at your knees and hips while keeping your back straight. Lift only an amount that feels comfortable, and avoid overfilling bags. For heavier bags, use a wagon or wheelbarrow to roll them instead of carrying them when practical.
