Trim only the vines that need shaping, and save healthy pieces with nodes if you want to root them and add more vines to the pot.
What to know before you cut
Use clean, sharp scissors or pruners. Look over the plant and decide which vines are too long or out of shape; older pothos leaves may yellow and drop naturally, so not every bare or changing section calls for a major trim. Pothos grows best in filtered light. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings, and water when the surface is dry. Pruning alone will not address unsuitable growing conditions.
For safety, avoid ingesting pothos: it contains calcium oxalate and is toxic if eaten in large quantities. Its sap may irritate skin. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension provides this handling guidance.
How to shorten a pothos vine
- Choose the length to keep. Follow the vine back to the point where you want it to end.
- Find a node. A node is the bump where a leaf meets the stem. Choose one at or below the length you want to retain.
- Make the cut just above that node. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruners. Repeat selectively on other overlong vines rather than cutting every stem to the same length.
Selective pruning can keep vines a reasonable length and promote new growth, but the available extension guidance does not establish a fixed number of shoots or a universal timetable for the parent plant. For a plant that needs a much more substantial reset, Wisconsin Extension says it can be cut back to 2 inches from the soil line if necessary. That is an option, not the routine amount to remove from every pothos.

What to do with the cuttings
Keep healthy offcuts if they include stem tissue with a node; a leaf by itself is not the node-bearing stem cutting described in propagation guidance. Root the cuttings in water or vermiculite, then plant several rooted pieces together in one pot if you want to add vines.
Rooting in water
Place the node in water and keep the leaves above the waterline. A jar is sufficient; a special propagation station is not necessary. Water rooting makes it possible to see the roots develop.

Rooting in vermiculite
Set a node-bearing cutting in vermiculite and keep the medium moist, not waterlogged. This avoids moving a cutting from water into a growing medium later.
The choice between water and a growing medium is a matter of preference, according to University of Vermont Extension, which identifies pothos as one of the vines that roots readily in water.

How long rooting and new growth may take
In its page revised in 2025, University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension gives 3 to 4 weeks for pothos vines to root in water or vermiculite. It says buds may begin growing in 1 to 2 weeks under warm temperatures. These are guidance intervals, not guarantees for every home or a timetable for the original pruned vine.
UF/IFAS Extension describes 1 to 1½-inch stem cuttings with a node and an attached leaf for commercial propagation; its guidance gives 2 to 3 weeks for buds to break and 3 to 4 weeks for rooting. Those dimensions and timing are production guidance, not a promise for every household cutting.

When to prune
The Wisconsin Extension pruning guidance does not specify a required season for trimming indoor pothos. A secondary propagation guide describes spring through early fall as the growing season and notes that propagation can be harder during slower late-fall and winter growth. Treat that as seasonal context for rooting cuttings, not a strict rule that prevents indoor pruning at other times.
