That hard topping method is often called crape murder, and it creates weak shoots, ugly knuckles, larger wounds, and more maintenance every year after.
On our job sites, we treat crepe myrtles like small ornamental trees, not hedges. The goal is not to make them short for one season. The goal is to build a clean, open structure that clears walks, drives, roofs, and siding while still looking like a crepe myrtle. Done right, a mature tree may need only light pruning once a year, and some years it may need almost none.
Start With The Right Goal
Before you make a cut, decide what problem you are solving. Good pruning has a reason. For a crepe myrtle, the usual reasons are structure, health, clearance, storm resilience, or appearance. Bad pruning usually starts with a vague goal like “cut it back” or “make it smaller.”
A healthy tree-form crepe myrtle usually looks best with 3 to 5 main trunks, good spacing between those trunks, and an open vase-shaped canopy. Shrub-form and dwarf cultivars are different. If the plant was bred to mature at 3 to 6 feet, you may be managing it as a large flowering shrub. If it was bred to mature at 20 to 30 feet, trying to hold it under a second-story window with annual topping is the wrong maintenance plan.

Wrong plant, wrong place is the root cause of a lot of repeated crepe myrtle damage. If a variety naturally wants to reach 25 feet and it is planted under a service drop, tight roof overhang, or low sign, pruning will never be a clean long-term fix. In that situation, removal and replacement with a smaller cultivar may cost less over 5 to 10 years than paying for repeated corrective pruning.
Best Time To Prune A Crepe Myrtle
The best time to prune a crepe myrtle in most of the United States is late winter to early spring, before new growth begins. In much of the South, that often means mid-February through mid-March. In colder regions, the window may shift later. The practical rule is simple: prune after the worst winter cold has passed but before buds push active spring growth.
Crepe myrtles bloom on new growth, so light dormant-season pruning does not stop flowering. You do not need to cut the tree down to large stubs to get blooms. A well-structured tree can flower heavily with only selective pruning.
Avoid late-summer and fall pruning. Cutting hard late in the season can stimulate tender new growth that is more vulnerable to cold damage. If a branch is broken, dead, dangerous, or rubbing against a building, remove it when needed. But routine shaping is best saved for the dormant season.

Tools And Materials You Actually Need
Most homeowners need only three pruning tools for a typical crepe myrtle: bypass hand pruners, bypass loppers, and a pruning saw. If you need a ladder, overhead chainsaw, or work near a service line, the job has moved into professional territory.
Use bypass hand pruners for small twigs, suckers, and shoots up to about 1/2 to 3/4 inch, depending on the tool rating. Use bypass loppers for branches around 3/4 inch to 2 inches. Use a sharp pruning saw for limbs larger than that. Avoid hedge shears for tree-form crepe myrtles; they round over the canopy and create dense, weak outer growth.
| Tool Or Service | Typical 2026 Cost | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Bypass hand pruners | $15-$75 | Suckers, small twigs, pencil-size branches |
| Bypass loppers | $20-$45 | Branches around 3/4-2 inches |
| manual pole pruner or pole saw | $40-$150 | Light reachable cuts from the ground |
| Battery loppers or pole pruner | $159-$499 | Repeated pruning where reach and hand fatigue matter |
| Professional crepe myrtle pruning | $78-$400 per tree | Tall, neglected, roof-adjacent, or previously topped trees |
Clean, sharp tools matter more than expensive tools. Dull blades crush stems instead of cutting them, which slows wound closure. For multiple trees, wipe blades between trees, especially if you see disease symptoms.
How To Prune A Crepe Myrtle Step By Step
1. Step Back And Mark The Tree
Before cutting, stand 15 to 25 feet away and look at the whole form. Take a photo. On larger jobs, our crews often mark intended cuts with tape first. That prevents the common mistake of making one cut, then another, then another, until too much live canopy is gone.

They should have good spacing, strong attachment, and room to grow without rubbing each other. If you are training a young tree, this is where the most important decisions happen. Small pencil-size cuts made early prevent 4-inch wounds later.
2. Remove Dead, Broken, Or Diseased Wood First
Dead and damaged wood comes out before cosmetic shaping. Remove branches that are cracked, storm-damaged, diseased, or clearly dead. If you are unsure whether a twig is alive, lightly scratch the bark. Green beneath the surface usually means live wood; dry brown tissue usually means dead wood.
Do not remove a large amount of live canopy just because you removed deadwood. Mature trees generally should not lose more than about 25% of the crown at one time, and less is better for stressed or old trees. For a mature crepe myrtle, a light hand is usually the right hand.

3. Remove Basal Suckers And Trunk Sprouts
Basal suckers are the shoots that come up from the base or root area. Trunk sprouts are small shoots growing directly from the main stems. Remove the ones that do not fit the intended form. Cut them close to their origin without gouging into the trunk.
Some homeowners remove every low shoot every time they see one. That can be fine for a formal tree-form specimen, but be careful on young plants. Raising the canopy too fast can make the tree look top-heavy and can expose young bark to more sun and heat. For clearance, remove lower branches gradually over several seasons.
4. Thin Crossing, Rubbing, And Inward-Growing Branches
Next, remove branches that cross through the center, rub against other limbs, grow back toward the trunk, or compete with a better-positioned branch. Your goal is an open canopy with good air movement and branch spacing, not a stripped tree.
If two branches occupy the same space, keep the stronger one with the better angle and remove the weaker one back to a parent stem or lateral branch. Do not cut a random branch halfway and leave a stub. Stubs die back and invite decay.
5. Make Proper Cuts At The Branch Collar
A correct pruning cut is made just outside the branch collar, which is the slightly swollen area where a branch meets the trunk or larger limb. Do not cut flush against the trunk. Do not leave a long stub. Both mistakes interfere with the tree’s natural wound closure.

First, make an undercut several inches out from the trunk to prevent bark tearing. Second, make a top cut farther out to remove the branch weight. Third, make the final cut just outside the branch collar. This is slower than hacking through in one pass, but it protects the trunk and bark.
6. Raise Clearance Carefully
Crepe myrtles are often planted near driveways, sidewalks, porches, fences, and rooflines. Remove lower limbs only where they conflict with people, vehicles, siding, lights, or maintenance access. A good clearance target is often 7 to 8 feet above walks and 12 to 14 feet above drives where trucks or service vehicles pass, but site conditions matter.
Never strip the lower third of a young tree all at once just to make it look taller. Gradual canopy raising over 2 to 4 seasons creates a better structure and a more natural look.
What Crape Murder Is And Why It Causes Problems
Crape murder is the common practice of cutting all trunks and major limbs back to the same height, leaving thick stubs or knuckled ends. It is easy to spot: the tree looks like a set of poles in winter, then explodes into a cluster of long, whip-like shoots in spring.
That regrowth may look vigorous, but it is not strong structure. Those fast shoots often attach weakly around old topping wounds. They bend under heavy flower clusters, split in storms, and require more pruning every year. The old cut ends can also become decay-prone, especially when large-diameter limbs are repeatedly cut back to the same point.

- Built-in sap groove effectively channels away sap to prevent sticking and keep blades clean during pruning.
- Capable of cutting branches up to 3/4 inch in diameter, ideal for live plants, stems, and light woody pruning tasks.
From a property standpoint, topping also hurts curb appeal. A topped crepe myrtle loses the exfoliating bark, arching branch structure, and layered canopy that make the tree valuable in the landscape. For a homeowner preparing for resale, a row of topped crepe myrtles can make the exterior look poorly maintained even when the house itself is in good shape.
How Much To Prune
For most maintained crepe myrtles, pruning should be modest. Remove deadwood, suckers, trunk sprouts, and select crossing branches. Then stop. If you have removed 15% to 20% of the live canopy and are still looking for more to cut, step back and reassess.
The 25% crown-removal guideline is an upper limit, not a target. Mature trees, drought-stressed trees, recently transplanted trees, and trees with old topping wounds should often receive far less. A stressed tree needs leaf area to produce energy. Over-pruning can slow recovery and invite more problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor young trees, small structural cuts are more valuable than large corrective cuts later. Start when branches are pencil-sized. Select the main trunks, remove poor attachments early, and guide the canopy while wounds are small.
Fixing A Crepe Myrtle That Has Been Topped For Years
A previously topped crepe myrtle can often be improved, but it usually cannot be fixed in one aggressive pruning session. Do not simply cut back to the same old knobs again. That repeats the problem.
The better plan is staged correction over multiple seasons. First, identify the strongest, best-positioned shoots growing from or near the old topping points. Select a few to become new leaders. Remove weak, crowded, inward-growing, and poorly attached shoots gradually. In the next dormant season, continue thinning competing shoots and guiding the new structure.
If the old knuckles are large, decayed, or splitting, hire an arborist to evaluate whether the tree is worth retraining. Sometimes the honest answer is replacement. For a tree in a front foundation bed, repeated correction pruning over 3 years may cost more than installing the right cultivar in the right location.
Deadheading Seed Pods: Optional, Not Required
Removing old seed pods is mostly an appearance choice. Crepe myrtles can bloom without seed pods being clipped off. If old clusters are reachable from the ground, you can remove them with hand pruners for a cleaner winter look. Do not climb, stretch, or top the tree just to remove seed heads.
If flower clusters bend branches heavily during summer, do not respond by topping the whole tree the next winter. Instead, thin weak or poorly attached shoots and improve structure. A branch that cannot support normal bloom weight may be poorly placed or too crowded.
When To DIY And When To Hire A Pro
A homeowner can usually prune a small, maintained crepe myrtle from the ground with hand pruners, loppers, and a pruning saw. If the cuts are under 2 inches, the tree is clear of utilities, and you can keep both feet on the ground, DIY is reasonable.

Hire a professional when the tree is over a roof, near a service drop, next to a street, too tall to prune from the ground, or has large old topping wounds. Also hire out the work if the pruning requires a chainsaw overhead, ladder work, or rigging branches away from siding, gutters, vehicles, fences, or glass.
In 2026, professional crepe myrtle pruning commonly runs about $78 to $400 per tree. Small, maintained ornamental trees are at the low end. Large, neglected, multi-trunk trees with heavy cleanup, roofline conflicts, or years of topping damage move higher. General tree trimming averages are higher, commonly around $412 to $700 per tree nationally, because those figures include larger shade trees, palms, pines, and more complex removals.
For property managers and homeowners scheduling other exterior work, late-winter pruning pairs well with gutter cleaning, roofline clearance, exterior inspection, drainage checks, and landscape punch-list work. Bundling several small ornamentals into one visit can reduce the per-tree mobilization cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Permits, Right-Of-Way, And Utility Safety
Most private-yard crepe myrtle pruning does not require a permit, but do not assume that every tree is yours to cut however you like. Street trees, right-of-way trees, protected trees, HOA-controlled landscapes, and trees in some coastal or urban jurisdictions may have pruning or removal rules.
Several cities and counties require permits or city approval for work on protected trees or trees in public right-of-way. Rules vary by location, species, trunk size, ownership, and whether the work is pruning or removal. Before pruning a crepe myrtle along a sidewalk, curb strip, alley, public street, or shared landscape area, check your city or county tree ordinance.
Utility safety is non-negotiable. Do not prune branches touching or near overhead power lines. Call the utility or a qualified tree contractor with line-clearance experience. A crepe myrtle may look small compared with a large oak, but electricity does not care about tree size.
What To Put In A Contractor Scope
If you hire a landscape crew or arborist, be specific. “Trim the crepe myrtles” can mean anything from careful structural pruning to topping every trunk. Write the scope in plain language.
A good scope might say: prune crepe myrtles according to ANSI A300-style selective pruning practices; do not top; do not cut trunks back to uniform height; remove dead, broken, crossing, rubbing, inward-growing branches, basal suckers, and unwanted trunk sprouts; make cuts just outside the branch collar; raise lower limbs only as needed for specified clearance; remove no more than necessary and do not remove more than 25% of live crown.
Ask for before-and-after photos of crepe myrtles the contractor has pruned without topping. That one request filters out a lot of bad work. If the crew’s standard answer is “we cut them back hard every year so they bloom,” keep looking.

Common Mistakes To Avoid
The biggest mistake is topping all trunks at the same height. The second biggest mistake is pruning every year by habit instead of pruning for a specific purpose. A well-placed, well-trained crepe myrtle does not need major annual cutting.

Other common errors include pruning in fall, removing too much live canopy at once, leaving stubs, making flush cuts, using hedge shears on the canopy, lifting the lower limbs too high too early, and ignoring the mature size of the cultivar. Another frequent mistake is hiring the cheapest crew without clarifying the pruning method. Cheap topping can create years of corrective work.
The Bottom Line
Correct crepe myrtle pruning is simple, but it requires restraint. Prune in late winter. Keep 3 to 5 well-spaced main trunks when training a tree form. Remove dead, broken, crossing, rubbing, inward-growing, suckering, and clearance-conflict growth. Make clean cuts just outside the branch collar. Do not top.
If the tree is small and reachable from the ground, this is a manageable DIY job with $35 to $150 worth of basic tools. If the tree is tall, neglected, near a roof or utility line, or already damaged by years of topping, budget roughly $78 to $400 per tree for professional crepe myrtle pruning and insist on selective pruning, not crape murder.

When is the best time to prune a crepe myrtle in the US?
Late winter to early spring is best, before new growth starts. In much of the South, that often means mid-February through mid-March. Avoid late-summer or fall pruning because it can stimulate tender growth before cold weather.
Should crepe myrtles be cut back every year?
No. Crepe myrtles should be pruned only for structure, health, clearance, or appearance. Annual topping is not needed for blooms and usually creates weaker growth and worse long-term shape.
What is crape murder?
Crape murder is severe topping, where trunks and major limbs are cut back to the same height. It creates large wounds, knuckled stubs, weak fast-growing shoots, and a tree that needs repeated corrective pruning.
How much does professional crepe myrtle pruning cost in 2026?
Professional crepe myrtle pruning commonly costs about $78 to $400 per tree in 2026. Small maintained trees cost less, while tall, neglected, roof-adjacent, or previously topped trees cost more.
Can I fix a crepe myrtle that was topped for years?
Often, yes, but it usually takes several seasons. Select a few strong shoots to become new leaders, remove weak crowded shoots gradually, and stop cutting back to the old knuckles every year.
Do I need a permit to prune a crepe myrtle?
Usually not for a private-yard tree, but rules vary. Check local requirements before pruning trees in public right-of-way, street strips, HOA areas, protected zones, or near utility lines.
