For the common flowering florist kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana), prune after blooming by removing faded flowers and their old stems. Cut back tall, leggy shoots only if the plant needs reshaping; a compact, healthy plant does not need a hard cut. The right amount depends on the plant’s size and condition.
Choose light cleanup or a shaping cut

Use clean scissors for fine stems or small pruning shears for thicker ones. Make a deliberate cut through the flower stem or shoot you are removing. Extension recommendations support removing stems, but do not prescribe a particular blade treatment or leaf-node position.
How far should you cut back a leggy kalanchoe?
There is no single cut-back distance that applies to every plant. Extension recommendations offer different starting points, not proven thresholds or guaranteed outcomes:
- For a plant that needs a substantial cut-back, UNH Extension recommends cutting to within six inches of the soil surface. For a large, multi-branched plant, it says to cut within six inches of the main stem. UNH Extension’s flowering-plant care guidance

- Clemson Extension recommends cutting back tall growth and old flower stems, without specifying a distance. Clemson Extension’s kalanchoe guidance
Use the plant’s condition to decide how much to remove. A mildly overgrown plant may need only a few shoots trimmed; a much taller, leggy plant may call for a more substantial cut. What to do after pruning
Keep the kalanchoe in a bright location and avoid leaving the growing medium wet. Water sparingly during summer, and let the soil dry somewhat during winter rest, advises Virginia Tech. Clemson Extension likewise recommends letting the soil dry slightly between waterings and warns that overwatering can damage the plant. Pruning can tidy the plant and support continued growth, but it does not ensure another flush of flowers. Florist kalanchoe is a short-day plant: buds form when it receives long, uninterrupted nights. Check the species before a hard cut
“Kalanchoe” covers plants with different growth habits, so these cut-back instructions are for the common florist kalanchoe, not every species. Flapjacks, including Kalanchoe luciae and related types, are monocarpic: the flowering rosette dies after it blooms, though the plant usually produces offsets.
