Start with dated records of your home’s condition, learn what vibration-producing work is planned, and find out who monitors the project and handles concerns. If a significant new change appears, document it and seek qualified assessment.
Can construction vibration damage your house?
It can pose a risk, but the risk is specific to the work and the site. For pile driving, factors include soil, pile type, hammer, installation technique, resistance, depth and distance from the building. A distance that is unremarkable at one site does not establish safety at another. The Federal Highway Administration’s driven-pile guidance describes these interacting factors.

Feeling or hearing vibration is not the same as evidence of structural damage. FHWA distinguishes RMS vibration levels, used to characterize human response, from peak particle velocity (PPV), used to screen potential building-damage risk. Building sensitivity varies, so interpreting measurements requires project-appropriate criteria and expertise; a sensation alone cannot tell you whether a home has been damaged. See the FHWA measurement handbook.

What to do before construction begins
Find the project contact and ask about the work
Look for the project owner, contractor, public notice or project website, community liaison, and complaint process. Ask whether the schedule includes pile driving, blasting, compaction, demolition or other vibration-producing work. Also ask:

- What criteria apply to nearby structures, and who selected them?
- Is a preconstruction condition survey offered or planned?
- Will vibration be monitored? Which structures and locations will be monitored, what metric will be used, and how are exceedances or complaints handled?
- Who should receive a concern, and how can you contact that person during active work?
FHWA recommends experienced personnel for evaluating or monitoring work near potentially affected structures. Monitoring arrangements and applicable criteria depend on the project; there is no single FHWA limit that applies to every construction activity and every house.
Make a dated record of your home’s condition
Photograph each room and each exterior elevation before work starts. For every visible defect, take a wider image that shows its location and a close-up that shows its details. Preserve original image files, record the date, and keep copies in more than one place. A written list can note existing cracks, sticking doors or windows, prior repairs, and known water or settlement issues.
Caltrans identifies documenting existing defects and damage as the primary purpose of a preconstruction survey. Its guidance allows documentation through drawings, high-resolution video, photographs or another method that adequately records existing conditions, and warns that an inadequate record can make later attribution difficult. See the Caltrans Transportation and Construction Vibration Guidance Manual.

- TANK TREAD GRIP PATTERN - Keep your machine glued to the floor with ELEON's unique grip pattern modeled after tank treads. ELEON washer anti vibration pads are built to hold in place during the shakiest of loads.
- INCLUDED LEVEL STOPS WALKING - The only way to ensure washers & dryers won’t “walk” across the floor is to adjust the level. Proper leveling is key for an appliance that an anti vibration mat alone cannot solve. We include a bubble level to easily level it yourself.
- RESTORE PEACE & QUIET - Dampen loud washing machines with ELEON's rubber anti-vibration pads. Designed to have the best balance of floor grip, noise dampening, & durability.
If you are concerned about a particular existing crack, a crack gauge can help you track visible change over time. It is a documentation aid, not a ground-vibration instrument; it cannot establish what caused a change or whether the crack is structurally safe.
Secure loose items
If vibration is expected, secure loose or precariously balanced objects that could fall. Caltrans identifies such items as possible pre-work corrections during a condition survey.
What to do while work is underway
Keep a dated log of when you feel vibration, what work appears to be happening, and any visible change. If you raise a concern, send it to the project contact in writing and retain the message and response.

If the project has monitoring, ask where instruments are placed, what metric and criteria are used, and how results or exceedances are communicated. FHWA guidance describes specialist-selected sensor placement and PPV measurement for damage screening. A homeowner’s observations do not replace that process.
A phone app or consumer vibration meter cannot certify that a home is safe. Measurement quality depends on the instrument, how and where it is mounted, and how results are interpreted. For a technical measurement, ask the project team or an independent qualified professional. FHWA’s field guide to noise and vibration measurement provides additional measurement context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you notice a new crack or other change
- Record it promptly. Take a close-up and a wider photo showing where the change is. Note the date and time and, if known, the construction activity underway.
- Notify the project contact in writing. Describe what changed and when you noticed it. Request an inspection through the project’s process and ask that relevant monitoring data be preserved.
- Get an independent assessment if the change is concerning. A structural engineer can assess a crack or other building change. A photo or the fact that it appeared during construction does not, by itself, prove the cause.
- Act on an apparent immediate hazard. If there is significant movement, a rapidly changing crack, falling material or another immediate danger, keep clear of the affected area and contact local emergency or building-safety authorities as appropriate.
Baseline records help compare conditions, but deciding whether construction caused damage may require qualified investigation. Caltrans’ survey guidance and FHWA’s blasting guidance address condition documentation and professional assessment in relevant project contexts.

Why there is no one vibration limit for every home
Vibration metrics and criteria are not interchangeable. FHWA describes RMS levels as a way to characterize human response and PPV as a measure used to screen potential building-damage risk. The handbook also notes that building sensitivity varies and points users to project-appropriate guidance.
FHWA’s construction noise handbook says it does not set requirements specifically for construction-related vibration. Project contracts, local requirements, the type of activity and site conditions may supply applicable criteria. Do not treat a limit used for blasting as a universal threshold for pile driving, demolition or every home.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For blasting, FHWA specifications describe criteria that account for distance, structure type, PPV and frequency, and applicable standards; under specified conditions, they call for condition surveys and monitoring where damage is possible. Those specifications are project-specific blasting guidance, not a DIY threshold or an automatic requirement for every construction site. See FHWA FP-24 specifications.
Can a project use a lower-vibration construction method?
You can ask the project engineer or contractor whether alternatives are feasible, but method selection belongs to the project team. FHWA identifies vibratory or hydraulic pile insertion and drilled or augered cast-in-place piles as alternatives to impact pile driving in relevant situations. Whether an option is suitable depends on engineering needs, ground conditions and other project constraints; no method can be assumed to be quieter or safer in every respect. The FHWA construction-noise mitigation handbook discusses mitigation options.
