The safest fall plan is simple: move furniture and the grill into a garage or basement when practical; otherwise use correctly fitted, secured covers. Clean the grill before a long period of nonuse, disconnect any propane cylinder and keep that cylinder outdoors, and move both furniture and grills into enclosed storage or away from the house when wildfire danger is high. Cold, snow, ice, moisture and embers create different risks, so the right action depends on the item, its material, the grill model and local conditions.
Start with a fall storage decision
Walk the patio before the first prolonged freeze and decide where each item will spend the season. South Dakota State University Extension guidance identifies a garage or basement as the strongest protection for outdoor furniture from cold, snow and ice. The same approach can shelter a grill, provided its fuel cylinder is handled separately and safely.

| Indoor space is available | Move furniture and the grill into a garage or basement. | Keep a propane cylinder outdoors; never bring it into a home or attached garage. |
| Furniture must remain outside | Use an appropriate, secured furniture cover. | Cover design and care depend on the furniture’s material, finish and cushions. |
| Grill must remain outside | Use a fitted, secured grill cover after the grill is completely cool. | Check the cover’s make, model or dimensional compatibility; features vary. |
| High wildfire threat | Place furniture and gas grills in enclosed storage or away from the home. | Follow local emergency instructions if conditions worsen. |
Do not assume one cover, cleaning product or storage method suits every item. Read the furniture manufacturer’s care directions and the grill owner’s manual before using a treatment, brush, scraper or cover.

Move it indoors when practical
Indoor storage removes direct exposure to snow and ice and reduces the time furniture spends wet or frozen. Clear a dry path, make sure the storage area can support the furniture’s weight, and avoid blocking doors, vents or electrical equipment. If a piece is too large for the available space, protect the pieces that are most vulnerable first, such as upholstered or finished components, according to the maker’s instructions.

Use a cover when the furniture stays outside
An outdoor cover is the alternative when a garage or basement is unavailable. Select a cover intended for the specific furniture type and dimensions, and secure it so wind cannot lift it. The available extension guidance supports cover use as a category-level measure but does not establish one universal fabric, construction or fit for every wood, metal, plastic, wicker or upholstered item.
Material-specific instructions matter. A finish, cushion insert or frame may require a particular cleaning method, ventilation arrangement or dry-storage recommendation. Follow the furniture maker’s directions for cushions, finishes and materials rather than applying a generic conditioner, sealant or detergent. If the manual says cushions must be stored dry or separately, follow that instruction even when the frame remains covered outdoors.
Set up the covered furniture for drainage and inspection
- Clean loose dirt and debris using the method approved for the material.
- Let surfaces and cushions dry as directed before covering them.
- Use the correctly sized cover; excessive slack can allow wind movement, while an undersized cover may leave edges exposed.
- Fasten the cover at its straps, ties or other designed attachment points.
- Leave the manufacturer’s required ventilation clear and do not seal wet furniture under a cover.
- After storms, inspect for standing water, displaced covers, trapped moisture or damage and correct the problem promptly.
Those steps are preparation practices, not a substitute for the furniture’s care instructions. The general sources do not establish a single maintenance schedule or material treatment that applies to all patio furniture.
Prepare a grill for extended fall and winter nonuse
1. Clean food and grease residue
Before storage, clean the cooking surfaces and the grill interior using the tools and methods specified in the owner’s manual. Weber’s storage guidance explains that food and grease residue can retain moisture and encourage corrosion or oxidation. Its instructions identify a brush or scraper for applicable components, but grate materials and finishes differ, so use only tools approved for your model.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Turn the grill off and allow every hot component to cool completely.
- Remove food remnants and grease from the grates and interior areas identified by the manual.
- Use the recommended brush, scraper or other tool; do not substitute an abrasive tool unless the manufacturer permits it.
- Empty or clean grease-management parts as directed.
- Allow cleaned parts to dry according to the manual before closing or covering the grill.
Cleaning is especially important when the grill will sit unused for weeks or months. It reduces the moisture-holding residue that can contribute to corrosion, but it does not eliminate the need for periodic inspection.
2. Handle propane safely
For a gas grill, close the cylinder valve and disconnect the cylinder before storing the grill. Weber’s safety instruction is explicit: NEVER store a propane tank indoors.
Keep the cylinder outdoors in the location and position permitted by the cylinder and local safety guidance. An attached garage is not an acceptable indoor storage location.
Storing the grill in a garage does not change the cylinder rule. Move the grill indoors only after the cylinder has been disconnected and placed outdoors safely. Do not bring spare cylinders into the home, basement or attached garage.

If the grill can be kept in a dry garage or basement after the propane cylinder is removed, indoor storage provides shelter from snow and ice. Keep the grill away from items that could be damaged by residual grease and maintain access to doors, walkways and ventilation equipment.

If the grill must remain outside, use a cover sized for the grill and secure it. Put the cover on only after the grill is cool. A correctly fitted cover helps keep the exterior cleaner, but it is not interchangeable across models.
4. Use a compatible, secured cover
The cited Weber cover documentation describes breathable, water-resistant fabric and fastening straps for compatible 18-inch Weber charcoal grills. Those characteristics apply to that compatible cover, not automatically to every grill cover or every grill size. Check the cover’s stated model compatibility or dimensions before buying or installing it.
- Confirm the grill’s make, model and dimensions from the rating label or owner’s manual.
- Choose a cover that lists that model or provides adequate dimensions.
- Wait until the grill is fully cool and dry.
- Place the cover without trapping loose grease, ash or water against the grill.
- Fasten every supplied strap or closure so wind cannot remove it.
- Inspect the cover after strong wind, rain, snow or freezing weather.
A cover protects against weather exposure; it does not make an unsafe location safe. Never operate an outdoor grill inside a house or attached garage because carbon monoxide can accumulate and cause asphyxiation.

During storage
- Keep the grill away from combustible storage and maintain a clear route around it.
- Keep a disconnected propane cylinder outdoors, never in the home or attached garage.
- Do not use the covered grill as a shelf for snow, tools or other loads.
- After severe weather, check that the cover remains secured and that water or debris has not entered openings.
Before using the grill again
After storage or a long period of nonuse, follow the owner’s manual’s restart procedure. Weber storage guidance calls for checking for gas leaks and burner obstructions before use. A general sequence is:

Wildfire conditions change the normal fall plan
Weatherproofing is not enough when wildfire threat is high. Oregon State University Extension recommends keeping patio furniture and gas grills in enclosed storage or away from the home during high-threat periods because embers can reach combustible outdoor items.
When threat is elevated
- Move patio furniture into an enclosed structure if practical.
- Move gas grills into enclosed storage or place them away from the home as local guidance directs.
- Keep propane cylinders outdoors and follow local fire-safety rules for their placement.
- Remove loose combustible items from areas immediately around the house.
- Monitor official emergency information and act on evacuation or defensible-space instructions.
A cover should not be treated as ember protection or as permission to leave combustible furniture beside the house during a high-threat event. Placement is the control that matters most in that situation.

If you have garage or basement space
Prioritize items that are hardest to protect outdoors: upholstered furniture, pieces with delicate finishes and the grill. Clean the grill first, disconnect its propane cylinder and keep that cylinder outdoors. Organize the storage area so the grill is stable, accessible and not surrounded by combustible clutter.

If storage space is limited
Keep furniture outdoors under covers selected for its type and dimensions. Cover the grill with a compatible, secured cover only after it is cool. Recheck covers after storms and inspect for trapped moisture or displacement. Do not use a generic cover whose fit leaves controls, vents or lower components exposed unless the manufacturer says it is suitable.
If you use charcoal rather than gas
The propane-cylinder step does not apply to a charcoal grill, but cleaning, cooling, covering and model-specific storage instructions still do. Remove ash only as the owner’s manual directs and ensure the grill is completely cool before covering it.
If the patio is in a wildfire-prone area
Use enclosed storage or distance from the home as the primary protection during high threat. A routine cover plan is secondary and should never conflict with local fire authority instructions.

Common mistakes and the safer correction
| Mistake | Why it is a problem | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Putting a propane cylinder in a basement or attached garage | Propane cylinders must not be stored indoors. | Disconnect the cylinder and keep it outdoors in an appropriate location. |
| Covering a hot or wet grill | Heat or trapped moisture can damage equipment and the cover. | Wait until the grill is cool and follow the manual’s drying instructions. |
| Assuming one cover fits every grill | Dimensions, vents and attachment points vary by model. | Match the cover to the make, model or measured dimensions. |
| Using a cover as wildfire protection | Furniture and grills remain combustible and vulnerable to embers. | Move them into enclosed storage or away from the home during high threat. |
| Skipping cleaning before storage | Food and grease residue can retain moisture and encourage corrosion or oxidation. | Clean with the tools and methods approved in the owner’s manual. |
| Lighting a stored grill without an inspection | Leaks or blocked burners may create a fire or carbon-monoxide hazard. | Check for leaks and obstructions before use, following the manual. |
What the source guidance does—and does not—establish
University extension guidance supports moving furniture indoors, using covers when indoor storage is unavailable and changing placement during high wildfire threat. Manufacturer guidance supports cleaning grill residue, disconnecting propane, keeping cylinders outdoors, using model-compatible covers and checking for leaks or burner obstructions before reuse.
That guidance does not establish a universal cover fabric, a single treatment for every furniture material, a performance ranking among covers or a seasonal damage statistic. Those decisions require the care instructions for the specific furniture and grill. When the manual conflicts with a generic seasonal checklist, follow the manual and applicable local fire-safety requirements.
