How to Compare Paint Prices Beyond the Cost per Can

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the estimated cost of completing the project, not the price printed on one can. Measure the surfaces, use the intended product’s stated coverage, multiply for the required coats, add primer and other preparation materials, and then compare performance factors such as hiding, cleanability, finish and service life. A cheaper gallon can require more gallons, another coat or earlier repainting.

Why a lower can price can produce a higher project bill

A shelf price answers only one question: what one package costs at one retailer on one date. Your project bill depends on how many packages you need and what else the surface requires.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Coverage and coat count are the first reasons. If Paint A costs less per gallon but covers less area or needs an additional coat, its total material cost can exceed Paint B’s. A paint-and-primer label may reduce steps on some surfaces but does not automatically remove the need for a separate primer. Finish, hiding, stain resistance, cleanability and expected service life can also change the value of the purchase.

Prices vary by package size, color, retailer and location. Use current local prices when you make the final comparison; do not treat a historical or advertised starting price as a quotation for your project.

Start with the surfaces, not the product aisle

Measure each area that will actually be painted

  1. Measure the length and height of every wall or other broad surface.
  2. Multiply length by height to get each surface area, then add the areas together.
  3. Subtract large openings only when doing so materially improves the estimate; small openings are often left in the calculation to offset waste and irregular edges.
  4. Separate walls, ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets and exterior components. They may need different products, sheens, colors or preparation.

Keep a separate subtotal for every product category. Combining a ceiling area with a trim area can make a gallon estimate look precise while assigning the wrong paint to part of the job.

Record the conditions that change consumption

  • Existing color and the new color, especially a major dark-to-light or light-to-dark change.
  • Substrate texture and porosity.
  • Whether the surface is bare, previously painted, stained, patched, glossy, chalky or contaminated.
  • Application method and tool: brush, roller, sprayer and the amount of material retained by the applicator can change effective coverage.
  • Interior or exterior exposure, moisture, temperature and weather during application.

Sherwin-Williams describes the basic estimate as area divided by the product’s coverage, while noting that the calculation is theoretical because texture, material retained by the applicator and tools are not included. Its FAQ is available at Sherwin-Williams’ paint FAQ. Treat every coverage number as an estimate, not a guarantee.

Calculate gallons for the planned coats

The core formula

For one product and one surface, use:

gallons for one coat = surface area ÷ stated coverage per gallon

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then calculate:

total gallons before rounding = (surface area ÷ coverage) × number of coats

Use the intended product’s current label or technical data rather than a generic internet average. Round up to the package sizes you can actually buy. If a product is sold in multiple container sizes, compare the cost of the complete package combination, not only a nominal per-gallon figure.

Illustrative calculation

Suppose a wall area is 1,200 square feet and the selected product states 350 square feet per gallon. At two coats:

  • One coat: 1,200 ÷ 350 = about 3.43 gallons.
  • Two coats: 3.43 × 2 = about 6.86 gallons.
  • Purchase quantity: round up to the available package combination that supplies at least 6.86 gallons.

This is a planning illustration, not a promise that every wall will achieve 350 square feet per gallon. Texture, porosity, color change, waste and application technique can increase consumption.

Use published ranges carefully

Consumer Reports gives 350–400 square feet per gallon as a general range for many interior paints. That range is a buying-guide reference, not a specification for every product or surface. Behr’s product information lists 250–400 square feet per gallon for several of its lines, with coverage varying by product. Check the current label for the exact line, color and substrate. The Behr information is at Behr’s product page.

Determine how many coats the surface really needs

Separate the manufacturer’s claim from your project plan

Coat requirements depend on hiding, the existing color, the new color, the substrate and whether a primer is used. A “one-coat” or “paint and primer” claim is not universal permission to stop after one pass.

Behr’s page gives line-specific examples, identifies products labeled for two coats and limits some one-coat hide claims to specified color collections. Its notes also state that a primer coat may be needed on some surfaces. Read the current product label and surface directions before using a one-coat claim in your estimate.

Use hiding evidence instead of assuming that price predicts it

Hiding is the ability to obscure the underlying color or surface. Better hiding may reduce coats, but you need product-specific evidence to predict the result. Consumer Reports treats hiding as a separate comparison dimension; do not infer a particular paint’s hiding performance from its price alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When changing from a strong color, covering repairs or painting a porous surface, budget for the coats and primer the directions call for. If the first coat does not provide uniform coverage, the completed-project cost is based on the additional material actually required, not the original one-coat estimate.

Add primer and preparation to the estimate

Identify when separate primer is part of the system

Primer can be required for bare or porous substrates, patched areas, stains, glossy coatings, certain exterior materials and difficult color changes. A self-priming or paint-and-primer statement is product- and surface-specific. Verify the label’s exclusions and preparation instructions.

Estimate primer as its own product:

primer cost = primer packages required × current local package price

Count preparation materials and labor decisions

  • Cleaning agents or detergent, mildew treatment and masking materials.
  • Patch or filler, caulk, sanding supplies and replacement hardware.
  • Drop cloths, liners, brushes, rollers, extension tools and sprayer supplies.
  • Specialty coatings required by the substrate or exposure.

For a contractor estimate, separate paint, primer, consumables and labor. A product that saves one coat may still be less economical if it requires extensive preparation or a slower recoat schedule.

Compare products that are suitable for the same job

Match the environment first

Interior and exterior paints are formulated for different conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable. Compare interior products with other interior products, and exterior products with products intended for the same exposure and substrate. A lower price is irrelevant if the product is unsuitable for the location.

Evaluate finish and cleanability

Sheen changes appearance, perceived color, touch-up visibility and resistance to cleaning. Consumer Reports explains that higher gloss generally cleans more easily, while lower gloss can hide surface flaws better. Choose the finish for the room or exterior component before comparing prices; otherwise you may be comparing products with different performance goals.

Check stain resistance, washing and expected wear

High-traffic rooms, children’s areas, kitchens, bathrooms and trim can justify a different cleanability requirement from a low-contact ceiling. Compare stain resistance and washability where the evidence is available, and keep those findings separate from a manufacturer’s marketing description.

Use a comparison matrix instead of a price-per-gallon ranking

Comparison axis Why it matters How to interpret the evidence
Package price and estimated quantity Converts shelf price into likely paint spending for the actual area and coat plan. Prices change by size, color, retailer and location. Use current local prices.
Stated coverage and coat count Determines how many gallons or packages the project consumes. Coverage is an estimate affected by surface and application. One-coat claims can have color or substrate limits.
Hiding Can affect the number of finish coats needed to cover the existing color. Use product-specific evidence; do not assume a cheaper or more expensive paint hides better.
Finish and cleanability Influences appearance, touch-up and resistance to stains or scuffs. Higher gloss generally cleans more easily; lower gloss can conceal surface flaws better.
Primer and preparation Adds material, time and sometimes labor. Self-priming claims are specific to the product and surface. Exterior work may still require primer.
Durability and service life Can change repaint frequency and long-term cost. Use comparable service-life evidence. A historical example is a method, not a modern product ranking.
VOC information and certification May matter for indoor use and personal preferences. Distinguish label claims and certifications; neither alone establishes overall paint quality.

Consumer Reports’ comparison interface lists price, hiding, staining, self-priming, coverage, recoat time, VOC information and certification among its dimensions. Detailed ratings may require membership. See the Consumer Reports paint comparison interface.

Compare the complete package cost

Build a worksheet for each candidate

  1. Enter the measured area for each surface category.
  2. Enter the candidate’s current stated coverage.
  3. Enter the planned number of coats, including primer coats where applicable.
  4. Calculate gallons before rounding, then select the package combination that supplies enough material.
  5. Multiply each package by its current local price.
  6. Add primer, specialty products and preparation supplies.
  7. Record the finish, recoat time, hiding information, cleanability and any relevant certification.

A simple material-cost formula is:

completed paint materials = finish-paint packages + primer packages + specialty-coating packages + preparation supplies

Do not let package size hide the difference

Two products can have the same nominal price per gallon but different package sizes, or one can be sold in a larger container at a lower effective unit price. Compare the exact package combination needed to reach the rounded quantity. Buying excess material is also a cost; balance a small reserve for touch-ups against purchasing substantially more than the project requires.

Keep local price evidence current

Consumer Reports reported that interior paint prices rose 21 percent and exterior paint prices rose 30 percent between January 2020 and January 2022, attributing those figures to the National Association of Home Builders. Consumer Reports’ guide was updated August 27, 2026, but the statistic is historical and second-hand, not a current inflation measure or a directly verified NAHB publication. Use it only to understand why old price comparisons age quickly.

Decide whether higher durability lowers the long-term cost

When repainting frequency matters, compare cost over the period you expect the coating to remain serviceable:

cost per square foot per year = total installed cost ÷ painted square feet ÷ years of service

Include labor in this calculation only when you have comparable labor assumptions for the products. A paint that costs more per gallon can still be economical if it covers better, needs fewer coats or lasts longer; the reverse can also be true.

The historic U.S. National Bureau of Standards Paint Manual with Particular Reference to Federal Specifications illustrates this approach with a 6,000-square-foot water-tower calculation using assumed five-year and three-year service lives. Those are assumptions in an old example, not contemporary measurements or a recommendation for today’s paint. The manual’s principle is: “The inference to be drawn from this example is not that the highest-priced paint is necessarily the most durable, but that over a period of years, the most durable paint, figured on a cost per square foot basis, is the best choice, regardless of the price per gallon of the paint.” Read the historical source at the National Bureau of Standards manual.

Mistake: treating label coverage as guaranteed

Fix: Use the label as a starting estimate and adjust for texture, porosity, color change, tools and application conditions.

Mistake: assuming one coat for every color and substrate

Fix: Check the manufacturer’s color and surface qualifications, and budget for the number of coats the job actually needs.

Mistake: comparing interior and exterior products together

Fix: First match the environment, substrate and exposure; compare price only within suitable products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: omitting primer and preparation

Fix: List primer, cleaning, patching, sanding and specialty materials as separate line items.

Mistake: using service-life claims without comparable evidence

Fix: Treat historical examples as methods for thinking about value, not as current durability benchmarks. Use relevant, product-specific evidence when available.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Define the job: interior or exterior, substrate, areas, color change and desired finish.
  2. Measure: calculate square footage by surface category.
  3. Screen products: remove candidates not intended for the environment or substrate.
  4. Estimate quantity: apply each product’s stated coverage and planned coats, then round to purchasable package sizes.
  5. Add preparation: include primer and specialty materials required by the directions.
  6. Compare performance: review hiding, staining, cleanability, recoat time, VOC information, certification and service-life evidence.
  7. Price locally: use current package prices and calculate the complete material total.
  8. Choose on the relevant horizon: for a short-term refresh, immediate material cost may dominate; for difficult access or frequent repainting, labor and service life can matter more.

What to verify before buying

  • Current coverage for the exact product, color and sheen.
  • Required number of coats and recoat time.
  • Primer requirements and surface exclusions.
  • Interior or exterior suitability and substrate compatibility.
  • Current local package price and available container sizes.
  • Whether the product’s hiding, stain-resistance or durability information comes from a manufacturer claim, an independent test or a certification.
  • How much leftover paint you reasonably need for future touch-ups.

The result should be an estimated completed-project cost with stated assumptions, not a universal winner based on one can’s price. If two products meet the same performance requirements, choose the one with the lower calculated project cost; if their costs are close, use hiding, cleanability, preparation burden and expected service life to make the final decision.
