Protect susceptible evergreens from winter burn by watering them while the soil is dry but still unfrozen, mulching the root zone without piling mulch against trunks, and screening plants exposed to drying wind or winter sun. These measures address the main causes of damage; no single step guarantees that foliage will stay unscathed.
Why evergreens get winter burn
Evergreen foliage can continue losing moisture in winter, especially when wind, bright sun, or a midwinter thaw increases water loss. If the soil is frozen, roots cannot replace that moisture, and needles or leaves may turn brown or scorched. Dry soil in fall and recent planting can raise the risk.
Susceptibility varies. Extension guidance identifies boxwood, arborvitae, yews, junipers, rhododendrons, hemlock, and dwarf Alberta spruce among plants that can be affected. Newly planted conifers may remain more vulnerable for several years while they establish.
Water before the ground freezes
Check soil moisture during dry fall weather and water susceptible plants deeply while the ground can still absorb water. Continue only as conditions allow; once the soil freezes, watering is no longer a practical way to replenish roots. Follow local extension advice rather than treating a calendar date as universal.

Regional recommendations illustrate why timing varies. Iowa State advises regular watering through fall until the ground freezes. In Minnesota, guidance is to reduce watering slightly in September, then water thoroughly in October until freeze-up. Wisconsin guidance differs by location and conditions: established plants in the region should receive at least one inch of water per week when rain is absent, into mid- or late November if the ground has not frozen; Dane County guidance notes that the cutoff comes earlier farther north and describes early or mid-November in southern and central Wisconsin when temperatures remain warm. These are local examples, not a schedule for every climate. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension; UW–Madison Extension, Dane County; Iowa State University Extension; University of Minnesota Extension.
Mulch the root zone carefully
Mulch helps retain soil moisture and buffer conditions around roots. Spread it over the root zone, but leave the trunk and stem bases clear; piling mulch against bark can cause other problems.

Depth recommendations depend on the source and situation. Wisconsin recommends an even 1–3 inches around the root zone and cautions that more is not better. Minnesota recommends 3–4 inches of shredded wood mulch over the roots of newly planted trees and shrubs. New Hampshire advises at least two inches of woodchips or straw over the root zone. Treat these as context-specific examples and follow local guidance for your plants and site. Wisconsin Extension; Minnesota Extension; University of New Hampshire Extension.
Screen plants exposed to wind or winter sun
For a susceptible evergreen in an exposed spot, a freestanding burlap screen can reduce direct exposure to drying wind or sun. It is not a guarantee against winter burn, and it is not necessary for every evergreen.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do anti-desiccant sprays prevent winter burn?
Recommendations on anti-desiccant or anti-transpirant sprays differ, and their benefit is uncertain. Wisconsin reports reliability problems: sprays may flake off before protecting plants or remain into the growing season and interfere with foliage respiration. Minnesota says they are not effective for protecting evergreen foliage. New Hampshire warns that applying a spray before dormancy can trap water that later freezes and damages leaf cells. Illinois Extension takes a less dismissive view, saying sprays may help somewhat, but they do not replace watering and exposure protection.

- Newly planted or exposed evergreen: pay particular attention to soil moisture and root-zone mulch; consider a supported screen if winter wind or sun is intense.
- Screening a plant: support burlap independently and leave room so snow cannot press it onto branches.
- Considering a spray: weigh the mixed extension recommendations, and do not substitute it for watering, mulch, or exposure management.
