During a heat wave, check container potting mix at least daily, water deeply when it is dry, and move pots out of harsh sun when possible. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all watering schedule: pot size, mix, plant species, wind and exposure all affect how quickly a container dries.
Check the potting mix before watering
Container plants can dry out faster than plants growing in the ground. Oregon State University Extension recommends checking containers frequently, and Iowa State University advises checking container plants daily in summer. A small pot in hot, windy weather may need attention more than once a day.
Use your finger to check below the surface. Iowa State’s container guidance says to water when the mix is dry 1–2 inches down. A pot that feels unusually light can also be a sign that it needs water. Treat these as cues to inspect each pot, not as a fixed schedule for every plant.
Water thoroughly when the mix is dry
Water at the soil line so moisture reaches the root zone. For a container, keep watering until water flows from the drainage holes; repeated shallow splashes may not wet the mix deeply enough. Watering in the morning is useful when practical because less water is lost to evaporation and plants can take up moisture before peak heat.

If a plant is wilting and the mix is dry, water it even if it is not morning. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension advises watering when soil is dry or wilting is observed, even when the timing is not ideal. Check moisture before assuming that wilting means the plant simply needs water.
Choose a delivery method that fits the number of pots
- A few containers: Hand-water each pot and confirm that water reaches the root zone and drains freely.
- Several containers: A drip system or soaker hose can deliver water to roots efficiently, but you still need to check the mix. An irrigation system does not determine whether each pot is actually dry.
Reduce heat exposure
Move portable pots into a shadier spot during the hottest conditions. This is especially useful for containers in full afternoon sun, near reflected heat, or exposed to wind. Dark pots in direct sun can heat the root zone and dry the potting mix quickly.

For heavy or fixed containers, bring shade to the plants. A canopy or shade cloth secured above the foliage can reduce direct sun while allowing airflow. Iowa State suggests 30–50% shade cloth as a starting point for many plants, not a universal setting; the amount of shade a plant can tolerate depends on its species and growing conditions. Avoid keeping a plant in heavy shade longer than needed: Oregon State notes that prolonged heavy shade can make plants stretch toward light.
Help the potting mix hold moisture
An appropriate organic mulch—such as straw, compost, wood chips, cocoa hulls or leaf mold—can slow evaporation and shade the root zone. This can be particularly helpful for small containers that heat and dry quickly. The extension guidance does not establish one ideal mulch depth for every container, so use a layer suited to the pot and plant rather than treating one measurement as a rule.

Recognize heat stress and respond carefully
Heat stress may show up as wilting, leaf rolling or cupping, dry leaf edges, flower or fruit drop, or reduced growth. A plant that wilts during the hottest part of the day and recovers by evening or morning may be reacting to heat. The longer it remains wilted, the greater the risk of lasting damage. Because wilting has more than one possible cause, check the mix before watering automatically.
While temperatures remain extreme, avoid adding avoidable stress. Oregon State and Iowa State advise waiting for cooler conditions to transplant or fertilize; Oregon State also advises against pruning during extreme heat. Do not apply pesticides or other treatments unless the product label and plant-specific guidance permit use in those conditions. Oregon State cautions that some treatments, including soap or neem oil, can further damage certain plants, such as conifers and succulents, in extreme heat.

Match the response to the container
- Small, movable pot in full sun: Check it frequently and move it to shade during the hottest conditions.
- Large or stationary pot: Check the mix, water thoroughly when dry, and use overhead shade if direct sun is intense.
- Windy or exposed location: Inspect more often because conditions can speed drying.
- Plant with specific light needs: Use shade cloth percentages as a starting point and adjust for the plant; one shade level will not suit every species.
