The simplest routine way to protect a mattress is to put a properly fitted mattress protector between it and the sheets. Choose one whose label specifically supports the protection you need—such as liquid resistance—and follow its care instructions. A fitted protector helps limit contamination; it does not make a mattress immune to spills, wear, allergens, or pests.
Choose a cover for the risk you want to manage
“Protector,” “cover,” and “encasement” are not guarantees of the same construction or performance. Check the product label rather than relying on the name alone. In healthcare guidance, the CDC describes mattress covers as fitted protective materials intended to help keep body fluids and other substances from contaminating the mattress. That is useful context for the basic purpose of a cover, but the guidance is written for patient-care settings, not as a universal home-care standard (CDC, Laundry and Bedding).
- Everyday spills and soil: Use a fitted protector whose label identifies the protection offered. Do not assume every fabric cover is waterproof.
- Allergen-control intent: Allergen-proof mattress and pillowcase covers are among the measures CDC lists for asthma trigger control. The guidance does not establish that a particular consumer product will improve symptoms (CDC, Controlling Asthma).
- Bed bugs: A bed-bug encasement is a specific pest-management tool, not simply a washable top cover. EPA advises choosing one with a zipper that closes completely and durable construction intended to last at least a year. Use it with inspection, treatment, and monitoring—not as a stand-alone eradication method (EPA, Preparing for Treatment Against Bed Bugs).
Fit the protector and keep it in good condition
Before buying, check the mattress dimensions and depth, then confirm the cover is designed to fit them. A cover that shifts or does not close as intended may not provide the protection you expect. For a bed-bug encasement, pay particular attention to the zipper closure and durability; for routine use, consider how the material feels and whether its care requirements fit your household.
Remove and wash the cover only as its own label directs. Materials and construction vary, so there is no universal water temperature, bleach rule, or drying method that applies to every product. Inspect seams, the protective layer, and any zipper from time to time. Replace a cover if it is torn or its closure is damaged; CDC healthcare recommendations emphasize maintaining cover integrity and replacing damaged covers, though their infection-control instructions should not be transferred wholesale to home products (CDC, Recommendations for Environmental Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities).

Respond to spills without soaking the mattress
If liquid reaches the mattress, follow the mattress maker’s cleaning instructions and dry the surface thoroughly before putting bedding back on. Avoid soaking the mattress or applying chemicals that the manufacturer has not approved. Keeping the mattress dry is a sensible household precaution, but CDC’s recommendations about wet or stained mattresses are written for healthcare settings; use the care guidance for your own mattress rather than treating those procedures as a home protocol.
Do not rely on “antimicrobial” wording alone
A label saying “antimicrobial” is not proof that a mattress or treated cover protects users from human pathogens. CDC cautions against replacing standard items on the basis of such claims; its recommendations explain that EPA has not approved public-health claims that treated articles protect against human pathogens (CDC, Recommendations for Environmental Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities). Choose a cover for clearly stated, relevant features—such as a specified liquid barrier or a bed-bug encasement design—not a broad promise to “kill germs.”
