Condensation forms when moist air meets a surface colder than its dew point; ventilation, desiccants, and insulation can help in the right conditions, but none replaces controlling moisture at its source.
Why storage containers develop condensation
A closed container’s moisture comes from more than the surrounding air. Goods, cardboard, pallets, timber dunnage, and other packing materials can release moisture into the space. If the metal roof or walls cool below the air’s dew point, water can form on those surfaces and drip onto stored items. Repeated temperature cycles can make wetting worse, contributing to corrosion, mould, rot, staining, and damaged packaging.

The IMO explains that during long-distance transport, moisture in goods and packaging—including timber used for blocking and protection—may condense on the container’s inner boundaries, on cargo, or within cargo. See IMO MSC.1/Circ.1498, section 2.1. The same basic moisture pathways matter in stationary storage, although transport guidance does not establish a universal design for every stationary container or climate.
Start with water entry and damp materials
Inspect the container and its surroundings
- Check the roof, walls, doors, and seals for damage or leaks.
- Look for standing water and signs that water is entering around the base.
- Direct drainage away from the unit and address ground moisture near it.
These are practical checks for controlling moisture sources; they are not a prescribed checklist from the transport guidance. Repair water entry before relying on ventilation or moisture absorbers to manage the interior.

Load only dry goods and packing materials
Dry the contents, cardboard, pallets, and timber dunnage before closing the container. Damp materials can continue releasing moisture after loading, so adding a desiccant does not make inadequately dried cargo safe by itself. UNECE transport guidance recommends measures such as active drying of dunnage and packing materials or desiccants, in combination with sealed plastic wrapping where appropriate: UNECE CTU Code loss-prevention guidance. Consider the expected climate and storage duration when deciding whether materials are dry enough.
Choose moisture controls for the conditions
Ventilation: useful only when outside air helps
Air exchange can remove moisture when outdoor conditions are suitable. But vents or fans can also bring humid air into the container and increase its moisture load. Consider local humidity, temperature swings, how tightly the unit is sealed, and what you are storing before adding ventilation. Industry guidance treats air exchange as one factor alongside leaks, ground moisture, and temperature; it is not a universal fix. See container moisture guidance.

Desiccants: size them to the moisture load
Container-rated desiccant bags or hanging desiccants can capture moisture and lower the dew point in a suitable closed container. Their type and amount need to match the container and its moisture load. They are a supplement to dry cargo and packing materials, not a substitute for drying them. For background on desiccants and cargo moisture, see the ACIAR/CSIRO report and UNECE CTU Code guidance.

Insulation: consider the assembly, not just the material
Insulation may reduce heat transfer and surface-temperature swings when those are a major cause of condensation. The assembly must also account for moisture movement and the container’s specific use, especially if it is converted or occupied. The available guidance does not establish one insulation recipe for all containers; seek a design suited to the climate and intended use. See ACIAR/CSIRO guidance and industry guidance.

Powered dehumidification: for persistent or demanding conditions
A powered dehumidifier may suit a container with a persistent high moisture load or particularly sensitive contents, provided the setup fits the space and power is available. The cited guidance does not establish a universal equipment choice or performance level, so treat it as a case-specific option rather than a default fix.
Understand humidity figures in context
Transport guidance offers useful reference points, but they are not universal targets for every stationary storage container or material.

| Figure | What the guidance says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 12%–15% estimated moisture content | UNECE CTU Code guidance (2014) gives this range for dry dunnage, pallets, and packing material; it associates it with eventual container relative humidity of roughly 60%–75% after closing. Source. | Transport guidance, not a universal reading for every pallet or stationary container. |
| About 60% relative humidity | UNECE CTU Code guidance (2014) describes this as equilibrium associated with “container-dry” cargo and a margin against daily temperature changes. Source. | A contextual reference, not a guarantee that condensation cannot occur. |
| About 75% relative humidity | UNECE CTU Code guidance (2014) cites this as a mould-growth threshold for the relevant cargo context. Source. | Not a threshold shared by every material; lower readings do not eliminate condensation risk. |
Monitor when the contents justify it
A temperature and humidity monitor or logger can reveal recurring conditions and help you judge whether a change to ventilation or moisture control is working. It observes conditions; it does not repair leaks or remove water. For enclosed storage of metal objects, the Canadian Conservation Institute discusses relative-humidity indicator cards: CCI guidance. No single sensor placement or monitoring interval is established for every container, so choose an approach suited to the contents and risk.

- For any container: stop water entry and load dry goods and packing materials.
- For a closed container with a manageable moisture load: consider desiccants sized for the conditions.
- Where outdoor air is reliably drier: ventilation may help; where it is humid, added air exchange may make conditions worse.
- Where temperature swings drive surface cooling: consider an appropriate insulation design.
- For valuable or sensitive contents: monitor conditions so recurring moisture problems are easier to identify.
The right combination depends on moisture sources, local temperature and humidity, how the container is sealed or ventilated, storage duration, contents’ sensitivity, and access to power. Do not assume one product or technique will protect every load.
