How to Prevent an Outside Faucet from Freezing: 14 Steps

Prevent an outside faucet from freezing by removing all attachments, shutting off and draining the indoor supply, covering the faucet, protecting exposed pipe, and inspecting for hidden freeze damage.

To prevent an outside faucet from freezing, disconnect the hose and all attachments, shut off the faucet’s indoor supply when available, open the outdoor faucet to drain the exposed line, and cover the faucet. Frost-free faucets still need an unobstructed outlet and correct installation; a cover alone cannot compensate for trapped water or a faulty pipe layout.

The most reliable way to prevent an outside faucet from freezing is to disconnect every attachment, shut off the faucet’s indoor water supply if one exists, drain the exposed pipe, and then cover and insulate the vulnerable areas. An insulated cover helps, but it is not a substitute for shutting off and draining a conventional hose bib.

Do this before the first hard freeze—not after the faucet or pipe has already frozen. The procedure below applies to typical U.S. homes, but the correct method can vary with the faucet model, plumbing layout, climate, pipe material, and whether the line passes through heated or unheated space.

Why outside faucets freeze and burst

When water freezes, it expands. A hose bib or outdoor pipe may split as pressure builds between the ice and a closed valve. The damage may remain hidden until the ice thaws and normal water pressure returns, at which point water can leak inside a wall, basement, crawl space, or ceiling.

frost-free sillcocks reduce this risk by placing the shutoff mechanism inside the warmer part of the building. They still depend on correct installation and drainage, however. A hose, splitter, timer, or other attachment can trap water in the faucet and prevent it from draining.

How to prevent an outside faucet from freezing: 14 steps

1. Start before the first hard freeze

Winterize the faucet when freezing weather is forecast or before the first seasonal freeze in your area. Starting early gives you time to locate the correct indoor valve, repair a leaking faucet, and investigate a line that does not drain properly.

Do not wait until the faucet is frozen. Thawing a pressurized or damaged pipe can release water suddenly and make an existing split worse.

2. Identify every outside faucet and connected water line

Walk around the entire property and look for every hose bib, sillcock, wall hydrant, hose reel, faucet splitter, timer, quick-connect fitting, irrigation adapter, and other outdoor water connection.

Each faucet and supply line must be winterized separately. Do not assume that shutting off one outdoor faucet protects another, even if they are close together.

3. Remove the garden hose

Unscrew the garden hose from the faucet. Drain the hose and store it somewhere protected from freezing.

Leaving the hose attached is one of the most common winterization mistakes. The hose can hold water against the faucet, obstruct drainage, and cause a frost-free sillcock to retain water in the section that is supposed to empty.

4. Remove splitters, timers, wands, and other attachments

Remove hose splitters, manifolds, spray nozzles, timers, backflow accessories, irrigation fittings, and quick-connect devices unless the manufacturer specifically says the part is designed to remain connected in freezing conditions.

The faucet outlet should be unobstructed so the fixture can drain. Some vacuum breakers and hose-bibb accessories have model-specific draining procedures, so do not assume that every attachment behaves the same way.

5. Find the dedicated indoor shutoff valve

Look for a valve in the basement, crawl space, utility room, garage, or near the point where the water pipe passes through the exterior wall. Some homes have one shutoff for each outside faucet; others have no dedicated shutoff at all.

Before cold weather arrives, identify which valve controls which faucet. If you are unsure, have someone operate the outside faucet while you listen and observe the plumbing near the suspected valve.

6. Close the indoor shutoff

Turn the dedicated indoor shutoff fully closed. The exact motion depends on the valve:

  • A lever-style ball valve is usually closed when the handle is perpendicular to the pipe.
  • A wheel-style gate or globe valve generally closes by turning clockwise, but do not force a stuck valve.

Closing only the outside faucet handle is not enough. That can leave pressurized water trapped in the pipe between the indoor supply and the exterior fixture.

7. Open the outside faucet

After closing the indoor shutoff, open the outside faucet. Let the remaining water in the exposed section of pipe drain out.

A small amount of water is normal. The important question is whether the line drains substantially rather than remaining full of trapped water.

8. Open the drain cap or bleed port, if present

Some indoor shutoff valves include a small drain cap or bleeder. Place a container beneath it, open it carefully, and drain the section between the shutoff valve and the outside faucet.

When drainage is complete, reinstall the cap securely. A missing or loose drain cap can cause leakage when the water supply is restored.

9. Check that the line actually drains

Watch and listen as the water leaves the line. If no water drains, or only a negligible amount drains from a line that should empty, investigate before the freeze.

Possible causes include:

  • The indoor shutoff is not the valve serving that faucet.
  • The outside faucet is still closed.
  • A hose, splitter, vacuum breaker, or other fitting is obstructing the outlet.
  • Air is trapped in the line.
  • The pipe does not slope toward the outside faucet.
  • The frost-free faucet was installed level or slopes inward.
  • The plumbing configuration does not self-drain.

Do not simply cover a line that will not drain and assume it is protected. A plumbing professional should assess repeated drainage problems, an incorrectly installed frost-free sillcock, or a line that runs through an unheated space.

10. Close the outside faucet after draining

Once the exposed section has drained, close the outside faucet unless the faucet manufacturer or a specific local winterization procedure says otherwise.

The goal is not to leave the fixture open indefinitely. The goal is to shut off the indoor supply first and drain the water-bearing exterior section before closing the outdoor handle.

11. Install an outdoor faucet cover

Fit a purpose-made outdoor faucet cover over the faucet. Molded-foam hose-bib covers are commonly used for this purpose. Choose a cover that fits securely without putting damaging pressure on the handle, vacuum breaker, or pipe.

A cover reduces exposure to cold air and wind, but it cannot correct a full pipe, a leaking faucet, a bad installation, or a hose left connected. Use it as a second layer of protection after shutting off and draining the line.

12. Protect exposed pipe and seal cold-air leaks

Inspect the pipe supplying the faucet from inside the home. If it passes through an unheated basement, crawl space, attic, garage, or other cold area, protect the exposed section with suitable pipe insulation.

Also seal drafts where the pipe passes through an exterior wall, while preserving access to the shutoff and allowing the faucet to drain correctly. Do not use insulation to conceal a leak, loose connection, or incorrectly sloped pipe. Repair those problems first.

13. Maintain safe heat during cold weather

Keep the home heated during cold snaps, including when you are away. If plumbing runs along an exterior wall, opening cabinet doors can allow warmer room air to reach the pipes. Keep garage doors closed when water lines run through the garage.

For unusually severe cold or a temporary loss of heat, a small controlled drip may help protect vulnerable interior plumbing. It is not the primary winterization method for an outside faucet, and it wastes water if used unnecessarily. Never rely on dripping to compensate for a hose left connected or an outdoor line that should have been shut off and drained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Inspect after the freeze and respond safely to damage

After a freeze, inspect the outdoor faucet and the pipe where it enters the building. Check the basement, crawl space, garage, nearby ceiling, and nearby wall for dampness, staining, dripping, or a hissing sound.

A split pipe may not leak until the ice melts and water pressure returns. If you find a leak, shut off the appropriate water supply immediately if it is safe to do so.

If a pipe is frozen but has not burst, apply gentle heat such as a hair dryer or heating pad where it can be used safely. Keep the faucet open while thawing so melted water can escape. Never use an open flame, torch, charcoal appliance, or fuel-burning heater to thaw plumbing. These can ignite nearby materials or create dangerous fumes.

Call a licensed plumber if the frozen section is inaccessible, a pipe has burst, the leak cannot be isolated, or the faucet needs replacement.

What to do when the water does not drain

  1. Confirm the valve. Recheck that the indoor shutoff controls the faucet you opened.
  2. Remove every attachment. Disconnect hoses, splitters, timers, spray fittings, and irrigation accessories.
  3. Open the outdoor handle. The indoor valve can be closed while the outdoor faucet remains closed, trapping water.
  4. Look for a bleeder. Open the small drain cap on the indoor shutoff if the valve has one, using a container to catch water.
  5. Check the faucet orientation. A frost-free sillcock installed level or with an inward slope may not drain as intended.
  6. Stop if the valve is stuck or leaking. Do not force a seized valve or disassemble a pressurized fitting. Arrange for plumbing service.

Conventional hose bib or frost-free sillcock?

Feature Conventional hose bib Frost-free sillcock
Where the shutoff occurs At or very near the outdoor faucet Inside the building at the back of the long faucet body
Winter requirement Usually shut off indoors, drained, and covered when possible Must still be drained correctly and left free of hoses and attachments
Common failure Water remains trapped in the exposed pipe Incorrect slope, excessive length, or an attachment prevents drainage
Replacement considerations Connection type and location Wall thickness, length, connection type, orientation, slope, and installation details

Optional products and when they make sense

Outdoor faucet cover

A molded-foam cover is a sensible addition for an exposed faucet after the line has been shut off and drained. It is most useful for conventional hose bibs and does not replace the core winterization steps.

pipe insulation

Pipe insulation can protect exposed indoor sections in a crawl space, garage, attic, or unheated basement. It does not drain the faucet and cannot fix a faulty frost-free installation.

Frost-free sillcock replacement

A replacement frost-free sillcock may be appropriate when an existing faucet is damaged or repeatedly freezes despite correct winterization. Compatibility is not universal: verify the faucet length, wall thickness, connection, orientation, and installation requirements before purchasing. Replacement work may be best left to a licensed plumber.

Temperature-activated protectors

A device such as the Freeze Miser outdoor faucet freeze protector is an alternative-use product for situations where the faucet must remain usable during freezing weather. The manufacturer states that the device activates below 37°F and releases a small amount of water. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent performance results. Such a device uses water flow, requires correct installation, and should not be presented as the standard replacement for shutting off and draining a faucet.

What not to do

  • Do not leave a garden hose, splitter, timer, spray attachment, or irrigation fitting connected during freezing weather.
  • Do not rely on a foam cover alone when a conventional faucet has an indoor shutoff and drainable line.
  • Do not use a torch, open flame, charcoal appliance, or fuel-burning heater to thaw a pipe.
  • Do not install heat tape or heating cable casually. Improperly installed or damaged heat tape can create a fire hazard; follow the product instructions and electrical requirements exactly.
  • Do not assume a frost-free faucet will drain when it is installed level, slopes inward, is obstructed, or has a connected attachment.
  • Do not force a stuck shutoff valve or remove a fitting while the line is pressurized.

When to call a plumber

Professional help is warranted when a pipe has burst, the leak cannot be isolated, the frozen section is inaccessible, the faucet repeatedly freezes, or the faucet must be replaced. A plumber can also evaluate a line that does not drain, a frost-free sillcock with the wrong slope or length, and suspected installation or code issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After any suspected freeze, inspect again when temperatures rise. Finding no leak while the pipe is still frozen does not prove that the plumbing is undamaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to prevent an outside faucet from freezing?

Disconnect the hose and every attachment, close the dedicated indoor shutoff, open the outside faucet and any indoor drain port, let the line drain, then close the faucet and install an insulated hose-bib cover. Protect exposed indoor pipe and keep the home heated during cold weather.

Do I need to remove the hose from a frost-free faucet?

Yes. A frost-free sillcock still needs an unobstructed outlet so it can drain. Remove the hose, splitter, timer, and other attachments before freezing weather. Incorrect slope, the wrong faucet length, or an obstruction can still cause freeze damage.

Are outdoor faucet covers enough to prevent freezing?

A cover reduces exposure to cold air but does not drain the pipe. For a conventional faucet, shut off the indoor supply and drain the line first whenever a dedicated shutoff is available.

How should I thaw a frozen outside faucet pipe?

Use gentle heat such as a hair dryer or heating pad where safe, and never use an open flame, torch, charcoal appliance, or fuel-burning heater. If the pipe is inaccessible, burst, or leaking, call a licensed plumber.

The Bottom Line

Before freezing weather: remove the hose and all attachments, close the indoor shutoff, open the outside faucet and any drain port, confirm the line drains, close the faucet, and install a cover. Protect exposed indoor pipe and keep the home heated. If the line will not drain or leaks after thawing, stop and call a licensed plumber.
