How to Prepare Soil for Container Gardening

Prepare container growing medium with a lightweight potting mix, even moisture, and a pot that drains. Learn why garden soil and gravel are poor defaults.

For most container gardens, use a lightweight potting mix labeled for containers—not garden soil by itself. Moisten the mix before planting, check that the container has drainage holes, and tailor any compost or other amendment to the plant and the mix label. Container roots depend on a small volume of medium, so it needs to hold water and nutrients while leaving space for air and drainage.

Choose a growing medium that suits the plant

Despite the common phrase “potting soil,” many bagged container products are soilless growing media. They may contain peat moss or coconut coir for moisture retention, along with perlite, vermiculite, composted bark, or compost. Formulas differ, so read the bag rather than assuming every product contains the same ingredients or fertilizer.

Garden soil alone is usually a poor default for pots. It can compact in a container and restrict air movement and drainage. In-ground plants can extend roots into surrounding soil; container plants cannot. University of Maryland Extension advises limiting topsoil to about 5–10% of a mix or using it only in very large containers (University of Maryland Extension’s container growing-media guidance, updated March 23, 2026).

Commercial container mix: the simple default

A lightweight mix labeled for containers is the most straightforward choice for most gardeners. Check the label for included fertilizer or lime, and choose a texture suited to the plant. Illinois Extension notes that succulents and some herbs and perennials generally need faster-draining media, while tropical foliage plants often suit more moisture-retentive media (Illinois Extension’s container-garden soil guidance).

Soil-based mixes: an alternative, not a universal recipe

If you want to make a soil-based blend, garden soil needs other ingredients to improve its physical properties. Illinois Extension gives one example: equal parts garden soil, peat moss, and perlite or coarse builder sand. Avoid fine beach or play sand in this recipe. Treat it as a specific option, not a formula that suits every plant or container (Illinois Extension’s soil guidance for container gardens).

Decide whether to add compost or another amendment

Compost can be part of a container medium, but it is not required in every pot. For container vegetables, University of Maryland Extension lists 100% compost, 100% soilless mix, and a 50:50 blend of soilless mix and compost as possible approaches (University of Maryland Extension’s vegetable-container guidance, updated March 23, 2026). These are alternatives for that context, not a single rule for every crop.

Rutgers NJAES offers a different optional proportion—one part compost to three parts soilless mix—in guidance for flowering and foliage plants (Rutgers NJAES’s outdoor container gardening guidance). The differing examples are a reason to follow the needs of your plants and the mix label rather than add a fixed amount of compost automatically. Perlite is another possible ingredient when a homemade blend needs improved aeration or drainage; many commercial mixes already include it.

Prepare and fill the container

  1. Check the pot. Use a container with drainage holes. Leave some space below the rim so you can water without the medium spilling over.
  2. Pre-moisten dry mix. Put it in a tub or work area, add water, and mix until it is damp throughout. Some dry soilless media, especially peat-based products, can resist wetting; a quick pour may leave dry pockets.
  3. Fill gently. Transfer the damp mix to the pot and settle it lightly. Do not pack it down into a dense mass; the pore spaces help water and air move through the medium.
  4. Plant according to the crop and product directions. The appropriate texture and any included nutrients depend on the plant and the particular mix.

Do not put gravel in the bottom for drainage

Gravel or rocks beneath the potting mix do not solve poor drainage. They take up root space and can worsen drainage, according to University of Maryland Extension’s guidance for container vegetables (University of Maryland Extension). Use a container that drains and a suitable growing medium instead.
