1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrepare before the loud or dusty phase starts: get the work schedule and a project contact, identify how air can enter your home, close or adjust openings safely during dusty operations, use source control and filtration together, clean settled particles with damp methods, and keep a dated record. Noise limits and complaint routes depend on your city or council, so use the authority for the property’s actual location.
A practical plan before work intensifies
Construction impacts are easier to manage when you act before demolition, cutting, grinding, excavation or heavy deliveries begin. Use this sequence as a first pass, then adapt it to your building and local rules.

- Get the programme. Ask the contractor, site manager, landlord or building manager which days and hours are expected to be loud or dusty, how long each phase should last, and whether weekend or evening work is planned.
- Get a named contact. Record a phone number or email for the person who can respond when dust reaches your home or noise occurs outside the stated schedule.
- Map entry points. Note windows and doors facing the site, ventilation intakes, shared corridors, and visible gaps around frames, pipes or other parts of the building envelope.
- Check building rules. Renters and residents of managed buildings should ask before blocking vents, changing HVAC settings, attaching window materials or making permanent sound-control alterations.
- Prepare supplies. Keep damp cloths, suitable floor-cleaning equipment, replacement HVAC or air-cleaner filters, and a way to record dates and times ready before the first dusty day.
- Save the local reporting route. Find the council, environmental-health office or municipal construction-noise page for the property’s location. A process that applies in one city may not apply across a border.
Communication is an indoor-environment control, not merely a courtesy. Guidance from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identifies limited communication with occupants and inadequate dust control as problems in occupied construction settings. Early notice lets you move vulnerable household members, protect rooms and report a problem while the responsible team can still change its methods.
What to ask the project team
Request a phase-by-phase schedule
Ask for the expected dates, daily hours and approximate duration of activities such as breaking concrete, masonry cutting, sanding, drilling, jackhammering, earthmoving and vehicle loading. The schedule may change because of weather or site conditions, so ask how updates will be issued. A broad completion date is less useful than knowing which two or three days are likely to produce the most dust or vibration.

Ask how dust will be controlled
Request a plain-language description of the controls being used at the source. Depending on the work, that may include wet methods, local extraction, sealed chutes, covered loads, wheel washing or barriers. Ask where equipment exhausts and whether doors, windows or shared corridors will be used for material movement. If the answer is vague, ask who is responsible for checking that controls remain in place.
Clarify the complaint process
Ask whether there is a site log, a security desk or a property-management channel for resident complaints, and what information the team needs to investigate. Confirm the expected response time. Keep the contact details with your own log rather than relying on a notice that may be removed from a lobby.
Find and reduce the ways dust enters
Outdoor particles can enter through open windows and doors, joints, cracks and other openings. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) treats source control, ventilation and air cleaning as complementary measures; there is no single window position or HVAC setting that is correct for every home.
Prioritise the exposed side
During visibly dusty work, close windows and exterior doors facing the site when practical. Also check less obvious routes: a bathroom or kitchen fan that draws replacement air, a stairwell door that does not latch, a mail slot, or a shared corridor connected to your flat. Closing one window will not stop infiltration through another opening.
Handle ventilation carefully
If your system has a controllable outdoor-air intake, ask building management or an HVAC professional whether it can be adjusted temporarily and safely. Do not disable required ventilation, carbon-monoxide protection or combustion-air provisions based on generic advice. In a shared system, changing one apartment’s setting can affect other occupants or create pressure problems.
Ask whether a filter with a higher stated efficiency is approved for your equipment. A filter that is too restrictive can reduce airflow or strain a system that was not designed for it. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s size, installation and replacement instructions.
Keep a clean zone
Choose one room, preferably away from the work-facing side, for sleeping or spending time when dust is worst. Keep its door closed, avoid storing clean bedding or food near the entry route, and change clothes or shoes after spending time outside if particles are visibly settling on them. These steps reduce the amount of dust you redistribute through the home; they do not make the room contaminant-free.

Use air cleaning as an additional control
A portable air cleaner with a higher-efficiency particle filter can reduce some indoor particulate matter. EPA guidance describes this as an additional measure, not a guarantee that construction dust will stay out or that every contaminant will be removed.
- Size it for the room. Use the manufacturer’s stated room coverage and operate it where people spend the most time, rather than assuming a small unit will clean an entire floor.
- Run it consistently during the dusty period. Select the highest speed the household can tolerate; a unit that is switched off whenever it is audible is not providing continuous cleaning.
- Check the filter path. Make sure the filter is installed in the correct direction and that air cannot bypass it around a loose panel or damaged seal.
- Plan replacement. Change filters at the interval and condition specified by the manufacturer. Construction can load a filter faster than ordinary household use, so inspect it without waiting for an odour or warning light.
When comparing units, consider room coverage, filter type, replacement-filter availability, noise at the speed you can tolerate, electrical placement and maintenance instructions. Published room-size claims are not a measurement of performance in your particular home.
Clean settled dust without putting it back into the air
Damp-clean hard surfaces
Use a damp, washable cloth or mop for floors, ledges, sills and other hard surfaces. Dry dusting can lift settled particles back into the breathing zone. Rinse or replace the cloth often so you are removing dust rather than spreading it from one surface to another. Clean from higher surfaces toward the floor and finish with the entry path, where shoes and airflow concentrate particles.
Vacuum with appropriate filtration
A vacuum fitted with a HEPA filter can help limit some dust escaping back into the room, according to EPA guidance. Check that the filter is correctly seated, intact and available as a replacement for your model. Empty or replace collection components as directed; opening a dusty container indoors can defeat the cleaning step.
Recommended Free Tools
People with asthma or allergies should leave the area while vacuuming and return after airborne dust has settled. If another person cannot do the work, use the lowest-disturbance method available and ventilate only when outdoor air is not carrying construction dust into the room.
Maintain the whole system
Inspect central HVAC filters and portable-air-cleaner filters on the manufacturers’ schedules, and sooner if they visibly load with dust. Do not wash a disposable filter unless its instructions specifically allow it. Keep replacement filters sealed until needed so they do not collect particles in storage.
Reduce the effect of construction noise
Start with timing and communication
Ask the site contact whether the loud phase has a defined start and finish each day, whether the noisiest tasks can be sequenced into predictable blocks, and whether quiet periods can be preserved for sleep, remote work or medical appointments. A request tied to a specific activity and time is easier to act on than a general request to “be quieter.”

Use reversible room measures
Heavy curtains and throw rugs are simple measures recommended by New York City Health for reducing noise inside a home. They will not stop low-frequency vibration or make demolition silent, but they can reduce reflected sound and rattling in furnished rooms. Close interior doors between the exposed façade and sleeping or work areas.
Sound-reducing or double-pane windows are more substantial interventions. In a rental or managed building, obtain written approval before replacing windows, adding permanent secondary glazing or attaching materials to frames. Do not seal or block a required ventilation opening in an attempt to reduce sound.
Protect sleep and hearing sensibly
Use the schedule to plan sleep, childcare, calls or time away from the building during the loudest periods. Earplugs or earmuffs can make indoor living more tolerable, but they do not address vibration, and you still need to hear alarms, doorbells or safety instructions. If noise is causing sleep loss, distress or worsening of a health condition, discuss the problem with a healthcare professional as well as the project contact.
There is no single residential construction-noise threshold that applies everywhere. Do not convert occupational limits or a rule from another city into a universal safe level.
Keep a contemporaneous record
A dated log helps a contractor or authority understand a recurring pattern. It is a practical communication tool, not a substitute for an inspection or legal determination.

Then use the local authority’s channel
Construction-noise rules, permitted hours, notice requirements and responsible agencies vary by jurisdiction. Use the council, environmental-health office or municipal reporting route for the actual address.
In England, the cited government guidance describes a council process for qualifying statutory-nuisance complaints and construction-noise notices. Councils may set controls covering noise levels, machinery, working hours and steps to minimise noise. The details and evidence requested are set locally.

New York City provides a different example: the Department of Environmental Protection directs residents affected by nearby construction to report impacts through 311 or its online route. That process should not be assumed to apply outside New York City.
Dust complaints need local direction
There is no universal dust complaint office established for every location. If visible dust continues to enter after reasonable measures, ask the site or building manager which agency handles construction dust, then contact the local environmental or public-health authority they identify. Provide your log and photographs and ask whether an inspection, permit office or another department is responsible.

Particle exposure
EPA’s page “Sources of Indoor Particulate Matter (PM)” (publication year listed as 2022) identifies particles 10 micrometres in diameter or smaller as a particular concern. That is a particle-size description, not a safe exposure limit and not a measurement of dust from any particular construction site. EPA notes that particulate matter can aggravate asthma and decrease lung function.
If anyone develops worsening wheezing, shortness of breath or other respiratory symptoms, contact a healthcare professional. Do not wait for a dust composition test before seeking care for significant symptoms. No general guidance can identify the dose or ingredients of dust at a specific site.
Work inside a pre-1978 home
When renovation, repair or painting inside a home built before 1978 may disturb painted surfaces, EPA says covered firms must be certified and follow specified lead-safe work practices. This warning concerns work on the home itself; it does not establish that dust drifting from nearby construction contains lead. Ask the responsible authority or a qualified professional about lead, asbestos or another site-specific material instead of inferring the hazard from colour or appearance.

Choosing optional equipment
Equipment can reduce exposure and cleanup effort, but neither an air cleaner nor a vacuum guarantees a dust-free home or protection from an unknown contaminant. Compare the characteristics that affect your actual room and maintenance routine.
| Equipment | What to compare | Questions to ask before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Portable air cleaner | Room coverage, filter type, replacement availability, noise at usable speed and maintenance instructions | Is the coverage based on a room size similar to yours? Can you obtain compatible replacement filters? Will the sound level allow continuous operation? |
| Vacuum | Stated filtration system, sealed filter path, replacement parts, suitability for your floors and noise | Is the filter correctly specified for fine particles? Can collection parts be emptied without opening a cloud indoors? |
| Cloths and mop | Washability, ability to stay damp and suitability for the surface finish | Can you rinse or replace them often enough to avoid redistributing dust? |
Follow each manufacturer’s instructions for installation, operation and filter changes. If you cannot obtain a replacement filter, the equipment is not a dependable long-term control.
Troubleshooting common situations
Dust appears even when windows are closed
Check other openings: a door facing the site, a shared corridor, a ventilation intake, gaps around frames or pressure-driven airflow from fans. Ask management whether the building has a balanced ventilation system and what temporary settings are permitted. Continue damp cleaning and filter maintenance while the source is investigated.
The air cleaner filter loads quickly
Heavy loading may reflect the intensity of the outdoor work or a unit that is undersized for the room. Verify the filter’s orientation and seal, inspect whether construction dust is entering directly around the unit, and ask the manufacturer about the replacement interval for unusually dusty conditions. Do not operate with a damaged or missing filter.
The site works outside the stated hours
Record the exact dates and times, contact the project manager with the log, and check the local authority’s construction-hours rule. Some work may have emergency, permit or utility exceptions; only the local authority can determine whether the activity is compliant.
Noise is tolerable by day but disrupts sleep
Ask whether the night-time activity can be rescheduled, then use the exposed-room measures that do not compromise ventilation: close interior doors, add heavy curtains and rugs where appropriate, and sleep in the quieter room if possible. Record the sleep disruption and report recurring night work through the local channel.
You suspect asbestos, lead or another hazardous material
Do not sample, sweep or handle suspect debris yourself. Keep people away from the material, notify the site or building manager, and ask the relevant local authority or a qualified professional which assessment is appropriate. Visible dust alone cannot identify its composition.
