Lavender thrives in full sun and soil that drains quickly; heavy, persistently wet soil can contribute to root rot and winter loss. Before planting, check the site and choose a cultivar suited to your local winter conditions—if the ground stays wet, consider a raised bed, mound, berm, or container instead.

Prepare the planting area by removing weeds, loosening the soil, and allowing enough room for mature plants and airflow. Plant at the locally appropriate time, water regularly while plants establish, and avoid overwatering, excess fertilizer, and pruning into old woody stems.

Start With the Site: Sun, Drainage, and Airflow

Choose a sunny site with good air movement. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends six to eight hours of direct sun in its regional guidance; local conditions and advice may differ. Lavender performs best in soil that drains quickly. Wet, heavy soil can contribute to root rot and winter loss, as guidance from the University of Illinois Extension, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and the Royal Horticultural Society explains.

Look for low spots, compacted soil, or places that collect runoff. If the soil stays wet, do not assume lavender will adapt at the existing grade. Elevating the planting area with a raised bed, mound, or berm—or choosing a container—can provide a better-drained root zone. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests a mound, ridge, or raised bed about 20–30 cm (8 inches to 1 foot) high for heavy soil; treat that as its guidance, not a universal specification.

Good airflow helps foliage dry after rain. Avoid cramped planting locations and places exposed to frequent sprinkler spray. Allow space for the mature size of the cultivar rather than crowding plants for quick fullness.

Choose the Right Lavender for Your Climate

Lavender types differ in winter hardiness and mature size. Choose based on your local winter conditions, the plant’s intended use, and the spacing available. Check regional extension guidance or ask a local nursery which cultivars perform reliably in your area.

English Lavender

English lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, is comparatively reliable in cold climates according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach; that recommendation is regional, not a guarantee for every site. Common cultivars include ‘Munstead‘ and ‘Hidcote‘. Confirm local hardiness and mature size before buying.

Lavandins

Lavandins are hybrids often grown for fragrance and landscape displays. Their mature size varies, so check the plant label and leave enough room for the individual cultivar.

Spanish and French Types

Winter suitability varies among lavender types and cultivars. Do not assume a type will be hardy in your area based on a general regional label; check local guidance and consider a container if the plant needs winter protection.

Prepare the Soil Carefully

Lavender generally does best in well-drained, low-nutrient soil. Soil and pH recommendations vary by region: the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Statewide IPM Program gives a pH range of 6.5–7.5 in its California guidance, while other sources describe neutral to slightly alkaline conditions or poor, dry to moderately fertile soil. Test your soil and follow local advice rather than adding lime or fertilizer without a reason.

Remove weeds and old plant debris, then loosen the soil when it is moist but not thoroughly wet. Amendment choices depend on local soil and conditions. Do not assume that adding sand or gravel to clay will improve drainage: Colorado State University Extension cautions that this can make drainage worse. If the site remains wet, raising the planting area or using a container may be a better option than trying to amend the existing soil.

For Heavy or Wet Soil

Consider a raised bed, mound, or berm if the ground drains poorly. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends raising the planting area about 20–30 cm for heavy soil. If that is not practical, a container with drainage holes is another option.

For Soil That Already Drains Well

Remove weeds, loosen the soil, and avoid unnecessary fertilizer or amendments. Lavender generally needs little feeding; the Royal Horticultural Society notes that it prefers low-nutrient soil and usually does not need feeding.

Mulch

Keep the planting area free of weeds and avoid piling moisture-retaining material against the stems. Choose mulch based on local conditions and keep the plant crown from remaining wet.

How to Plant Lavender Step by Step

Planting time depends on climate. Iowa State University Extension recommends spring planting after the risk of severe frost has passed in its regional guidance. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends April or May and cautions against winter planting; the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources gives California-specific spring and fall windows. Follow local frost timing and regional recommendations rather than a single calendar date.

Planting Instructions

  1. Choose the site and setup. Check sun, drainage, airflow, mature cultivar size, and local winter suitability. If the soil stays wet, consider a raised bed, mound, berm, or container.
  2. Prepare the area. Remove weeds and old plant debris, then loosen the soil when it is moist but not thoroughly wet. Use amendments only when appropriate for your soil and local guidance.
  3. Lay out the plants. Space them according to the cultivar’s mature size and the planting purpose. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests about 90 cm (3 feet) between plants in groups, or 30 cm (1 foot) or 45 cm (18 inches) for hedges depending on cultivar size. Its figures apply to those contexts; do not treat them as universal spacing.
  4. Set the planting depth. Plant at the same depth as the nursery pot.
  5. Backfill and settle. Firm the soil gently around the root ball and water the new plant.
  6. Care during establishment. Water regularly while the plant establishes, especially in dry weather, while avoiding persistently saturated soil.

Watering Lavender Without Drowning It

Water newly planted lavender regularly while it establishes, particularly during dry weather. The aim is to support root growth without leaving the soil waterlogged. How often to water depends on weather, soil, and the planting setup, so check the soil rather than following a fixed schedule.

Once established, in-ground lavender is drought tolerant in many conditions, according to the Royal Horticultural Society, the University of Illinois Extension, and Iowa State University Extension. Containers have less soil volume and can dry faster, so check them more often during warm weather. Make sure excess water can drain away.

Pruning, Harvesting, and Seasonal Care

Prune to maintain a compact shape, but do not cut into old woody stems, which may not regrow reliably. Timing differs by climate and source. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends an annual trim in late summer just after flowering, removing spent flower stalks and about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of leaf growth. Illinois Extension advises waiting until new growth appears in spring in its Midwest guidance and not cutting back in fall. Iowa State University Extension recommends light pruning after flowering and removing dead or damaged stems in spring. Follow the approach suited to your region and plant condition.

Harvest stems near the beginning of flowering, when buds are beginning to open. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Statewide IPM Program advises that only a few florets be open for dried flower heads; Iowa State University Extension also recommends harvesting as buds begin to open. Dry small bundles in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, following Iowa State’s guidance.

Lavender generally needs little fertilizer. Avoid excess nitrogen, which Iowa State University Extension warns can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers. If a plant declines, check drainage, local suitability, and care conditions before adding fertilizer.

Growing Lavender in Pots

A container can be a useful choice when garden soil drains poorly or a plant needs to be moved for winter protection. Choose a container with drainage holes and a mix that drains freely; do not leave the pot standing in water.

Container lavender can dry faster than in-ground plants, especially in warm weather. Check the mix more often and water as needed while allowing excess water to drain. In cold regions, containers may need winter protection; check local cultivar guidance because a plant’s suitability in the ground does not necessarily mean it will tolerate an exposed pot.

Compare Lavender Planting Setups

Setup When it may suit What to consider
Existing garden bed The site is sunny and soil drains quickly. Choose a locally suitable cultivar and space plants for mature size and airflow.
Raised bed, mound, or berm Existing soil is heavy or stays wet. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests about 20–30 cm elevation for heavy soil; adapt to site conditions.
Container The garden site is unsuitable, or the plant needs moving for winter protection. Provide drainage and check moisture more often in warm weather.

When to DIY and When to Get Help

For a small planting area with suitable drainage, gardeners can usually handle weed removal, soil preparation, planting, and routine care themselves. A raised bed, mound, berm, or container may be more appropriate where the existing site stays wet.

Common Lavender Planting Mistakes

Planting in wet, heavy soil without addressing drainage can contribute to root rot and winter loss. Other avoidable problems include choosing a cultivar unsuited to local winter conditions, crowding plants, overwatering, and using too much fertilizer.

If a plant struggles, review its site, drainage, cultivar suitability, and care before replacing it. Replanting in the same persistently wet spot without changing the conditions may lead to the same issue.

The Bottom Line

Lavender needs full sun, quickly draining soil, room for airflow, and a cultivar suited to the local climate. If the ground stays wet, consider elevating the planting area or using a container; if it drains well, avoid unnecessary amendments and fertilizer.

Prepare the site, plant at the locally appropriate time and at nursery-pot depth, space plants for their mature size, and water regularly while they establish without keeping the soil saturated. Prune lightly according to regional guidance and avoid cutting into old woody stems.

Can lavender grow in clay soil?

Lavender can struggle in heavy, poorly drained soil, where wet conditions can contribute to root rot and winter loss. If the soil stays wet, consider a raised bed, mound, berm, or container.

Should I use a raised bed for lavender?

A raised bed is an option when existing soil stays wet or drains poorly, but it is not necessary for every garden. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests a raised planting area about 20–30 cm high for heavy soil.

When should I plant lavender?

Planting calendars differ by region. Iowa State University Extension recommends spring planting after the risk of severe frost has passed in its guidance, while other sources give advice for their own climates. Check local recommendations and frost timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How far apart should lavender plants be?

Spacing depends on cultivar size and whether you are planting a group or hedge. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests about 90 cm between plants in groups, or 30 cm or 45 cm for hedges depending on cultivar size. Check mature plant size and allow airflow.

How often should I water lavender?

Water regularly while new plants establish, especially in dry weather, but avoid waterlogged soil. Once established, in-ground lavender is drought tolerant in many conditions; containers dry faster and need closer checking.

How should I prune lavender?

Pruning timing varies by region. Follow local guidance, shape the plant lightly, and avoid cutting into old woody stems because regrowth may be unreliable.
