Grow it from fresh seed or divide an established clump, and keep the patch in bounds: valerian can self-seed and spread by underground growth. Enjoy the summer flowers sooner, or plan on waiting until the second or third year to dig roots.
Choose the right valerian and check local rules
This guide is about common valerian, Valeriana officinalis. Other valerian species are also sold for medicinal use, so check the botanical name on a seed packet or plant label before buying. The Royal Horticultural Society lists seed sowing, division and spring basal cuttings as propagation options in its plant profile.
Common valerian is native to Europe and western Asia and has naturalized in parts of North America. It may escape gardens through seed and rhizomes. North Carolina State University Extension reports it is listed as noxious in Connecticut and Wisconsin; Missouri Botanical Garden also warns that it self-seeds freely and spreads by rhizomes. Check your local invasive-plant and noxious-weed lists before planting, and do not let seed or plant material escape into natural areas (North Carolina Extension; Missouri Botanical Garden).
Pick a site with sun, moisture and room
Choose full sun for sturdy stems; partial shade is also suitable. In deeper shade, stems may flop more, according to Missouri Botanical Garden. Valerian prefers reasonably fertile, moisture-retentive soil, but it should drain rather than remain waterlogged. Manitoba Agriculture favors rich loam in its production guidance, while the RHS lists clay or loam and recommends moist but well-drained conditions (Manitoba Agriculture; RHS).

- Tall Medicinal Perennial: Valerian seeds for planting grow into a striking valerian plant 36-72 inches tall and 12-24 inches wide, ideal for home garden beds and outdoor herb garden borders in hardiness zones 4-9.
- Aromatic Root Harvest: Valerian root seeds for planting produce earthy valerian root ready in fall of the second year; 60+ days to maturity, perfect for medicinal herb seeds collections and herbal seeds gardens.
- Strong Seed Germination: Valerian seeds sprout in 10-21 days at 65-70°F; press plant seed just 1/8 inch deep as light aids germination, excellent for seed starting and indoor herb garden success.
- Flexible Planting Options: These valerian root seeds adapt to garden plots, raised beds, containers, or fields; direct sow these non gmo seeds in spring or fall, or start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost.
- Deer Resistant & Pollinator Friendly: Upright valerian herb forms clumps with pink to white blooms in early to mid-summer, attracting bees while resisting deer in outdoor garden setups.
Allow space for a substantial perennial. Depending on conditions and source region, mature plants are reported at roughly 1–1.5 m (3–5 ft) tall and 0.5–1.2 m (about 1.5–4 ft) wide. Regional hardiness guidance differs: the RHS gives UK rating H4, North Carolina Extension lists USDA zones 4a–7b, and Manitoba Agriculture says hardy to zone 4 while noting experimental cultivation in zone 3. These ratings use different systems and should not be treated as interchangeable; consult local guidance for your climate (North Carolina Extension; RHS; Manitoba Agriculture).
Propagate valerian by seed or division
| Method | Best suited to | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Seed | Starting several plants without an established clump | Use fresh seed, provide light and steady moisture, and sow shallowly. |
| Division | Making new plants from an established clump | Divide in spring or autumn, allowing time for plants to establish before winter. |
| Basal cuttings | Propagating a plant by cuttings | The RHS lists spring basal cuttings as an option; detailed instructions are not stated in the cited profile. |
Starting valerian from seed
Start seed in containers outdoors or in a greenhouse, then transplant seedlings after the last frost for your area. Manitoba Agriculture says light is required for germination, recommends consistent moisture, and advises sowing no deeper than 1 cm (½ inch). Its guidance reports germination in about 20 days in flats, but timing can vary with conditions. Seed freshness matters: the same source says viability declines after two years. Its regional crop-production calendar should not be treated as a universal sowing date (Manitoba Agriculture; RHS).

Dividing an established plant
Divide a mature clump in spring or autumn. Manitoba Agriculture describes crown or runner division and advises dividing early enough for the plants to settle in before winter. It recommends spacing transplants 12–15 inches (about 30–40 cm) apart; Ontario’s medicinal-herb guidance gives 30–45 cm between plants. Follow local extension advice where available, since the recommendations vary slightly by source and region. Manitoba Agriculture suggests dividing established plantings every three years to reduce overcrowding (Manitoba Agriculture; Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness).
Care for the plants and control their spread
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially while seedlings are establishing, and weed while young plants are small. Valerian can spread by runners or rhizomes as well as by self-seeding. Remove spent flower heads before they set seed if you want to limit seedlings, and divide crowded clumps periodically. Manitoba Agriculture recommends extra nitrogen and a second-year compost side-dressing in its crop-production guidance; this is not a universal home-garden fertilizer prescription, and the RHS and Missouri Botanical Garden profiles do not set out a specific feeding program.

- Sleep: Valerian herb, derived from the root of Valeriana officinalis, is commonly used to improve sleep quality due to its sedative effects.
- Anxiety: It is known for its calming properties, helping with anxiety and stress levels. Valerian can be particularly useful for those with mild anxiety issues.
- Cultivation: Valerian grows best in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade. It's relatively easy to cultivate, requiring minimal care once established.
- Harvesting: The roots, which are the parts most commonly used, should be harvested in the fall after at least two years of growth to ensure sufficient active compounds.
- Quality: All seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
Flowers are fragrant clusters of white or pale pink, usually appearing in summer. North Carolina Extension gives a June-to-August bloom period, while Missouri Botanical Garden reports June to July; local timing varies.
Harvest roots only after the plant is established
Root harvest is a multi-season commitment, not a first-year task. Manitoba Agriculture recommends digging roots after the first fall frost in the second season. Ontario advises digging in autumn of the second or third year. The difference reflects the guidance of those regional sources, so use local growing advice where available (Manitoba Agriculture; Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness).

Growing valerian does not establish that home-grown roots are effective or safe as a treatment. North Carolina Extension reports possible adverse effects associated with prolonged medicinal use, including headache, nausea, agitation, heart palpitations and insomnia. Do not use garden-grown roots as self-medication; seek advice from a qualified health professional about treatment or supplements.
