Trailing bacopa is usually Chaenostoma cordatum, also sold under the former name Sutera cordata. Plant it in moist, well-drained soil in a bright spot, then keep the root area evenly moist. A hanging basket or container shows off its trailing habit, but it can also grow in a suitable garden bed. Check the botanical name before buying: “bacopa” can also mean aquatic plants with different growing needs.
Make sure you have ornamental trailing bacopa
Look for Chaenostoma cordatum or Sutera cordata on the plant label. The common name “bacopa” is also applied to aquatic species in the genus Bacopa, which are not the same plant. North Carolina State Extension explains the naming distinction in its ornamental bacopa profile; the South African National Biodiversity Institute uses Chaenostoma cordatum in its PlantZAfrica profile.
Ornamental bacopa is a low, spreading plant with small leaves and small flowers. University of Illinois Extension lists a mature height of 3–6 inches and a June–October bloom season in its plant profile. Those measurements and dates are source-specific, not a guarantee for every cultivar, climate, or growing season.
Choose a planting spot and container
Light
Give bacopa a bright location, adjusting for local heat and the cultivar. University of Illinois Extension recommends full sun to very light afternoon shade. PlantZAfrica says the species adapts to sun and shade, while the Royal Horticultural Society’s guidance for the cultivar ‘Snowflake’ allows sun or partial shade. These recommendations come from different regions and plant contexts, so use them as a range rather than a single universal rule.

Container or garden bed
A hanging basket or container is a natural choice because the stems trail over the edge. Use a fertile potting medium that holds moisture but drains freely, and make sure the container has drainage holes. Bacopa can also be planted in a suitable border or used as a spreading ground cover; PlantZAfrica and North Carolina State Extension describe these garden uses.
Plant bacopa step by step
- Choose the plant and position. Confirm the label says Chaenostoma cordatum or Sutera cordata, then select a bright site suited to your local conditions.
- Prepare the soil. Use fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. For a basket or pot, check that excess water can escape through the base.
- Set the plant at its existing depth. Place it so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil; fill around it and firm gently.
- Water it in. Water thoroughly to settle the soil, allowing surplus water to drain away.
- Check moisture regularly. Keep the root area consistently moist, especially in a hanging basket or during hot or windy weather.
Water consistently without waterlogging
Even moisture helps bacopa flower well. University of Illinois Extension’s Bacopa (Sutera cordata) Hort Answers profile says dry soil can interrupt flowering and cause buds to dry up and fall. Check containers frequently because they can dry faster than garden beds; the sources do not establish a fixed watering interval.

Do not leave roots sitting in water. Illinois Extension also lists drowning, edema, drought, and root rots among possible problems. Good drainage and regular checks help avoid the extremes of a dry root ball and persistently saturated soil.
Plan for seasonal growth and winter
Whether bacopa survives winter depends on climate and cultivar. Illinois Extension describes it as a tender annual. North Carolina State Extension says it can be perennial in USDA zones 9–11 and is grown as an annual in cooler climates. The RHS rates ‘Snowflake’ H2 under UK hardiness ratings; that cultivar-specific UK rating should not be treated as a guarantee elsewhere. In cold climates, plan to enjoy bacopa as a seasonal plant unless local guidance confirms it can overwinter in your conditions.

Propagate bacopa
You can start from seed or propagate an established plant vegetatively. The South African National Biodiversity Institute describes spring sowing, replanting rooted stems, and taking stem cuttings, preferably in summer or autumn. North Carolina State Extension also lists spring seed sowing and stem cuttings in spring or early summer. For ‘Snowflake’, the RHS lists layering. These are documented options, not evidence that one method works best for every cultivar or setting.

Pruning a hanging basket
If stems become overlong or sparse, trimming can encourage fresh growth. Iowa State University Extension’s general hanging-basket advice says trailing plants can be cut back by one-third to one-half to promote attractive new growth and more flowers later in the season. This is guidance for trailing basket plants generally, not a bacopa-specific trial.

Check conditions before diagnosing symptoms
- Buds dry up or fall: Dry soil can interrupt flowering, according to Illinois Extension. Check moisture and whether the basket is drying too quickly.
- Soil stays saturated: Confirm the container drains freely; Illinois Extension lists drowning and root rots as possible problems.
- Leaves or stems look unhealthy: Aphids, thrips, edema, and other environmental problems are among the issues listed by Illinois Extension. These possibilities do not identify the cause on an individual plant, so inspect the plant and its growing conditions before choosing a response.
