Confirm the botanical name on the label before planting, because several unrelated plants share the common name.
Confirm which Joseph’s Coat you have
Common names can refer to different plants. North Carolina State Extension uses Joseph’s Coat for Alternanthera ficoidea, but also lists Alternanthera dentata, Amaranthus tricolor, Codiaeum variegatum, Iresine diffusa f. herbstii, and the rose cultivar Rosa ‘Joseph’s Coat’ among plants known by that name. Check the botanical name on a nursery label or seed packet before following care advice. NC State Extension’s profile for A. ficoidea and its profile for A. dentata illustrate why the distinction matters. Amaranthus tricolor is an annual amaranth, whereas A. ficoidea is a tropical perennial often grown as an annual or houseplant in colder climates. University of Florida IFAS Extension identifies A. tricolor as Joseph’s Coat amaranth.

How to plant and grow Joseph’s Coat
Choose a sunny site or bright indoor spot
Plant A. ficoidea in full sun to partial shade. Full sun generally brings out vivid foliage, though intense sun in very hot summer conditions can bleach leaves. It can also be grown in containers or indoors; choose a bright location for an indoor plant.
Prepare moist, well-drained soil
Use organically rich soil that retains some moisture but drains freely. Keep the soil from drying out for prolonged periods, especially while the plant is establishing, but do not leave roots sitting in stagnant, waterlogged soil. In a pot, use a potting medium that balances moisture retention with drainage.

Space outdoor plants for coverage
For a groundcover planting, space plants 4 to 9 inches apart, following the North Carolina State Extension recommendation. Its typical dimensions for A. ficoidea are 6 to 12 inches tall and 1 to 1.5 feet wide. Cultivars and related species can differ, so use the dimensions on the individual plant label when planning a bed or container. See the NC State Extension plant profile and Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder.
When to plant and how to handle winter
In cold-winter regions, grow A. ficoidea outdoors as a warm-season annual, or use a container that can be brought indoors before frost. Missouri Botanical Garden lists it for USDA Zones 10 to 11. If starting from seed, sow indoors in late winter and transplant outside after your area’s last frost date; the calendar date depends on your location. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s Plant Finder entry provides its zone and seed-starting guidance.

How to water Joseph’s Coat
There is no single watering interval that suits every bed, pot, or indoor location. Check the soil or potting medium and water according to how quickly it dries: maintain moisture during establishment and avoid prolonged dryness, while ensuring excess water can drain away. Although established plants are reported to tolerate heat and drought, Missouri Botanical Garden recommends consistently moist soil, so drought tolerance is not a reason to let a new planting dry out.

Choose seed or a stem cutting
Both seed and stem cuttings are listed propagation methods. Seedlings can differ considerably in foliage quality and color, so seed is less predictable when you want to preserve the look of a named selection. A cutting from the plant you want to match is the more reliable choice in principle; the cited extension and garden sources do not provide a detailed cutting procedure.
