Water thoroughly only when the mix has dried, then empty the saucer. Aloe tolerates drought far better than persistently wet roots, so drainage and restraint matter more than a rigid watering schedule.
This guide covers planting a nursery plant, repotting an established aloe, and separating rooted offsets (often called pups). The same method works indoors year-round; spring or early summer is usually easiest when dividing pups because active growth helps the plant recover.

What you need
- A healthy Aloe vera plant or a rooted offset.
- A container with at least one drainage hole. A terracotta pot with a drainage hole is a practical option, but the hole—not the material—is essential.
- Cactus and succulent potting mix, or peat-free potting compost amended with perlite, pumice, sharp sand, or horticultural grit.
- Clean scissors or small pruning shears for dead leaves and offsets.
- A saucer or cachepot to protect the surface. Any collected water must be emptied after watering.
If you do not already have a plant, start with a live Aloe vera plant from a reputable garden center or nursery. Check that the leaves are firm and free from obvious pests, and avoid a plant sitting in saturated soil.

Light
Indoors, place aloe near a bright window or in bright indirect light. A plant that leans, stretches, or develops widely spaced leaves is probably not receiving enough light. Rotate the pot occasionally so growth does not permanently lean toward one direction.
Aloe can go outdoors during warm weather, but it is not frost-tolerant. If it has been growing indoors, do not move it straight into intense midday sun. Increase outdoor exposure gradually over several days or more; a sudden change can scorch the leaves and produce brown or reddish stress coloring.

When to repot
Repot when roots circle tightly around the root ball, emerge from the drainage holes, the container repeatedly tips over, the potting mix has broken down and stays wet, or offsets have crowded the parent plant. Routine repotting is not necessary simply because a particular amount of time has passed.
Aloe can be planted indoors in any season. For separating offsets, spring and early summer are generally preferable because the plant is actively growing.

How to plant a nursery Aloe vera
-
Choose a modestly larger pot with drainage
Select a container only slightly wider than the root ball. About 1 to 1.5 inches of space between the root ball and the pot edge is a useful guide. A much larger pot holds more wet mix around a relatively small root system, increasing the risk of root problems.
Confirm that water can escape through the bottom. A saucer is fine, but do not let the pot stand in drained water. A decorative cachepot can also be used if you remove it—or empty it—after watering.
-
Prepare a porous potting mix
Use a commercial cactus and succulent potting mix, or improve ordinary peat-free compost with a mineral component such as perlite, pumice, coarse sand, or horticultural grit. There is no single compulsory recipe: the finished medium should be loose, porous, and able to dry between waterings.

-
Remove the plant without damaging the crown
Let the existing mix become relatively dry. Support the plant at the base—not by pulling the leaves—and tip it from its container. Loosen only compacted mix around the outside of the root ball. Unnecessary root disturbance slows recovery.
Inspect the roots while the plant is out. Healthy roots should not be soft, dark, or foul-smelling. Those signs can accompany rot caused by prolonged wetness and require corrective care rather than a routine repot alone.
-
Set the aloe at its original depth
Place the root ball so the base of the leaves, or crown, sits just above the surface of the mix. Fill around the roots and firm the mix lightly. Do not bury the crown, and do not pile mix into the center of the rosette where water can collect.

Decide when to water for the first time
After ordinary repotting, let the plant settle rather than immediately saturating it. If roots were cut or the plant suffered substantial damage during division, keep it dry for a short healing period; University of California guidance recommends waiting at least a week after major replanting work before watering.
For an undamaged nursery plant, water the mix thoroughly once it is settled, allowing excess to run from the drainage hole. Then wait until the growing medium has dried before watering again. Never leave the container in standing water.
-
Move it into bright light gradually
Place the newly planted aloe in bright light. If it came from a dim shop or indoor position, increase exposure gradually rather than placing it immediately in strong outdoor sun. Continue rotating the pot occasionally if the plant leans toward the window.
How to plant an Aloe vera pup
A mature Aloe vera often produces offsets around its base. Division is the practical, better-supported way to propagate it. A random detached leaf should not be treated as guaranteed to produce a new plant.
- Wait for a manageable offset. Choose a pup that is large enough to handle and, ideally, already has some roots of its own.
- Expose the base. Remove the parent plant from its pot and gently clear mix from the area where the pup joins it.
- Separate it cleanly. Try to ease the offset away by hand. If it remains attached, use a clean, sharp tool. Avoid crushing either plant.
- Pot it separately. Use a small container with a drainage hole and fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. A large pot is unnecessary for a small pup.
- Keep conditions bright but not constantly wet. Give the offset bright light and water lightly at first. If roots were cut, allow the damaged area to dry and heal before watering.
- Look for establishment. New growth or resistance when you give the plant a very gentle tug after several weeks suggests that it is beginning to root. Do not repeatedly pull it up to check.
Clean pruning shears are useful for dividing an offset or removing genuinely dead tissue, but they are not essential for ordinary planting. If you use them, clean the blades before and after the cut.
Watering after planting
Check the mix rather than following a universal calendar. Light, temperature, pot size, plant size, and soil texture all change how quickly aloe dries out. Water thoroughly at the soil surface when the medium has dried, then allow excess to drain completely.

- During active growth: allow the mix to dry between waterings; do not keep it continuously damp.
- During winter or other low-growth periods: water less often because evaporation and plant uptake are slower.
- Always: empty the saucer or cachepot and avoid pouring water into the center of the rosette.
- Avoid misting: surface moisture on the leaves does not replace proper root watering and can leave water trapped in the rosette.
Firm leaves and a dry-down cycle are generally more useful indicators than a fixed seven-day or fourteen-day schedule. Aloe is drought-tolerant, but that does not make it tolerant of a pot that remains wet.

Mushy leaves or a collapsing base
Suspect prolonged wetness, inadequate drainage, or cold and wet conditions. Remove the plant and inspect the roots. With a clean tool, cut away rotted material, allow damaged tissue to dry as appropriate, and repot into fresh fast-draining mix in a container with an open drainage hole. Then correct the watering pattern. A severely rotted plant may not recover, so prevention is more reliable than rescue.
Brown tips or reddish coloring
Possible causes include sudden exposure to strong direct sun, cold, or inconsistent care. Move the plant to bright but less intense light while it acclimates and protect it from frost, cold drafts, and cold wet soil. Leaf color alone cannot identify one certain cause, so consider the recent change in conditions.
Leggy or leaning growth
Insufficient light is a likely cause. Move the plant closer to a bright window or use a suitable grow light, increasing exposure sensibly. Rotate the pot periodically. Severely stretched growth will not instantly become compact again, but better light supports healthier new growth.
Mealybugs, scale, or mites
Inspect leaf bases, folds, and crevices when bringing a plant indoors or after purchase. Isolate a visibly infested plant from other houseplants and use a treatment appropriate to the pest and the product label. Avoid confusing normal dried leaf tissue with an insect infestation.
Safety: keep Aloe vera away from pets
Do not present Aloe vera as an edible home remedy, and do not advise ingesting leaves or aloe products as part of a planting guide. The ASPCA lists Aloe vera as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses; reported toxic principles include saponins and anthraquinones, and possible signs include vomiting, lethargy, and diarrhea. Keep the plant and trimmings away from pets. If an animal may have eaten it, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate animal poison-control service promptly. See the ASPCA Aloe safety information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I plant Aloe vera in regular potting soil?
You can, but ordinary potting soil may hold too much moisture by itself. Mix it with a mineral amendment such as perlite, pumice, coarse sand, or horticultural grit, or use a commercial cactus and succulent mix. The goal is a porous medium that dries between waterings.
Should I water Aloe vera immediately after repotting?
After routine repotting, let the plant settle and avoid heavy watering until the mix and plant are ready. If roots were cut or damaged during division, allow a short healing period; guidance from the University of California recommends waiting at least a week after major replanting work before watering.
Can an Aloe vera leaf grow a new plant?
A detached leaf is not a reliable propagation method for Aloe vera. Separating a rooted offset, or pup, from a mature plant is the more practical approach.
How often should newly planted aloe be watered?
There is no reliable universal interval. Check the mix and water when it has dried, then let excess drain away. Water less during winter or other low-growth periods, and never leave the pot standing in water.

The Bottom Line
The dependable formula is simple: drainage hole, porous mix, shallow planting, bright light, and a complete dry-down between waterings. Keep the crown dry and above the soil, acclimate the plant before strong sun, and separate pups only when they are large enough to handle—preferably with roots.
