The clearest 2025 kitchen trend is not a single cabinet color or countertop material: it is a larger, more carefully prioritized room. In Houzz’s 2025 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, homeowners planning, undertaking, or recently completing a kitchen renovation reported bigger footprints, substantial island investments, selective spending, continued neutral finishes, and more attention to long-term usability.
The study surveyed 1,620 U.S. homeowners during the 2024–25 renovation cycle. Its percentages describe that remodeling audience—not every U.S. kitchen—so “everywhere” is best understood as a magazine-style forecast rather than a guarantee. Here are the 10 patterns most likely to influence kitchen projects in 2025, along with what each one means for planning, budgeting, and construction.

At a glance: the 10 Houzz kitchen trends for 2025
- Kitchens are borrowing space from dining rooms and living rooms.
- High-end remodels are costing roughly three times the median project.
- Homeowners are prioritizing some upgrades while scaling back others.
- Islands are receiving major attention.
- General contractors remain the most frequently hired professionals.
- Traditional style is gaining ground, although transitional remains first.
- White and off-white still lead many finish categories.
- Age-related and accessibility needs are shaping layouts and hardware.
- Vinyl, hardwood, and tile are competing closely for flooring share.
- Long-term savings are the main motivation behind sustainable choices.
1. Kitchens are borrowing space from dining rooms
Most renovating homeowners did not radically change their kitchen’s footprint: 64% kept it close to its original size. However, 35% expanded the room. Among those who expanded, 29% took space from a dining room, 12% used living-room space, and 18% created an addition.

That reflects the kitchen’s expanding role as a place to cook, eat, work, host, and manage household routines. After renovation, 53% of the kitchens in the study measured at least 200 square feet.

For homeowners, removing a wall can produce a more useful layout, but it is not a cosmetic decision. Before assuming a dining-room wall can come out, a contractor should determine whether it is load-bearing, identify plumbing and electrical routes, check HVAC implications, and confirm permit requirements. The cost of structural work, temporary support, beam installation, flooring repair, and finish matching can change the economics of an open-plan remodel.
2. High-end kitchens are spending at a very different level
The median spend for a major kitchen remodel was $60,000, up from $55,000 in the prior study. But the median is only one part of the picture. The top 10% of spenders reached at least $180,000 for major remodels and at least $67,000 for minor remodels.
Large kitchens cost more still: among kitchens measuring 250 square feet or more, the median major-remodel spend was $72,000, while the top 10% spent at least $200,000.
These are national survey figures, not a quote for a particular home. Geography, structural conditions, cabinet quality, appliance packages, finish selections, labor rates, and the amount of plumbing or electrical work can move a project far above or below those numbers.
The practical lesson is to establish scope before choosing finishes. A budget should account for demolition, design, permits, framing, electrical, plumbing, cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, lighting, ventilation, painting, waste removal, and contingency—not just the visible items in a showroom.
3. Homeowners are becoming more selective about upgrades
Renovators continued to prioritize the core surfaces of the kitchen. Countertops were upgraded by 91% of respondents, backsplashes by 85%, and cabinets by 85%.
At the same time, several categories declined compared with the previous study:
- Full appliance replacement fell to 51%.
- Non-backsplash wall-finish work fell to 43%.
- Electronics fell to 7%.
This does not mean homeowners stopped improving their kitchens. It suggests that budgets are being directed toward changes with a visible or practical payoff rather than replacing every component at once.
That approach can make sense in a phased remodel. Cabinets, countertops, and backsplash work often determine the room’s layout and finish schedule, while appliances may be retained if they fit the revised plan and remain reliable. The reverse is also possible: an old range, failing refrigerator, or inadequate electrical service may need to be addressed before decorative work. Evaluate condition, dimensions, ventilation, energy use, and compatibility rather than following a percentage as a rule for your own project.

Product details behind the larger categories
The full Houzz study adds useful detail. Engineered quartz led countertop materials at 42%. Tile accounted for 76% of upgraded backsplashes, and 67% of respondents selected backsplash coverage extending to the cabinets or range hood. Rectangular backsplash tile was most common at 68%, with horizontal-brick patterns at 39% and horizontal-stack patterns at 15%.
Among large appliances, dishwashers were upgraded by 71% of respondents, microwaves by 70%, ranges by 64%, refrigerator-freezer combinations by 62%, and range hoods by 61%. Stainless steel remained the leading appliance finish at 74%.
4. Islands are becoming major design and construction projects
Fifty-eight percent of renovating homeowners either added an island or upgraded an existing one. Thirty percent added an island, while 28% improved one already in the kitchen.
These are not necessarily small furniture-like additions. Among upgraded islands, 52% were longer than seven feet. Rectangular islands dominated at 78%; L-shaped and square islands were much less common.
A large island can provide prep space, storage, seating, and a social focal point. It can also consume circulation space and create substantial construction requirements. Planning should include:
- Clear walking routes around all sides of the island.
- Door and drawer swings for nearby cabinets and appliances.
- Electrical outlets where required by the applicable code.
- Structural support for a heavy countertop or overhang.
- Plumbing and ventilation requirements if the island includes a sink or cooktop.
- Lighting that covers both work surfaces and seating areas.
- Seating clearance that matches the counter height and stool design.
The Houzz figures show that islands are popular; they do not establish that every kitchen needs a seven-foot island. In a smaller room, a shorter island, peninsula, or movable worktable may produce a safer and more functional result.

5. General contractors are the most commonly hired professionals
Eighty-six percent of homeowners in the study hired a professional for their renovation. General contractors were the most common professional category at 50%, followed by cabinetmakers at 32% and kitchen designers at 25%. Architects accounted for 13%, and design-build professionals for 12%.
These categories can overlap: one project may involve a general contractor, a designer, and a cabinetmaker. The numbers therefore should not be added together as if each homeowner selected only one type of professional.
A general contractor can coordinate multiple trades and sequence demolition, framing, plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, and finish work. A designer may improve the layout and selections before construction begins. A cabinetmaker may be essential when the room requires custom dimensions. The right team depends on the project’s complexity.

6. Traditional style is returning—but transitional still leads
Among homeowners changing their kitchen style, 81% made or planned a style change. Transitional remained the leading choice at 25%, but traditional rose five percentage points to 14%, moving ahead of modern at 12% and contemporary at 11%. Farmhouse declined to 7%.
The evidence supports a relative comeback for traditional design, not the claim that traditional kitchens became the majority style. It may appear through raised or framed cabinet details, warmer wood tones, classic tile patterns, furniture-like elements, decorative lighting, and less aggressively minimal layouts.
Traditional does not have to mean historically themed. A durable approach is to combine a classic cabinet profile or natural wood element with simpler countertops, restrained hardware, and modern lighting. That can provide character without locking the entire room to a short-lived interpretation of a period style.
7. White and off-white remain the dominant color choices
Neutral finishes continue to lead the Houzz data:
| Kitchen element | Leading choice | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinets | White | 33% |
| Countertops | White | 41% |
| Countertops | Off-white | 23% |
| Walls | Off-white | 26% |
| Walls | White | 25% |
| Backsplashes | White | 35% |
| Backsplashes | Off-white | 22% |
Green and blue each appeared in only 5% of upgraded cabinet choices. That points to continued neutral dominance with smaller pockets of color experimentation, rather than a wholesale shift to colorful cabinetry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is also room for contrast within a neutral kitchen. Twenty-four percent of respondents used different colors on upper and lower cabinets; white led on upper cabinets, while wood tones led on lower cabinets. This combination can add warmth and visual distinction without requiring a fully colored cabinet package.
8. Aging and changing household needs are influencing design
Half of remodeling households addressed a special need. In the relevant question set, 26% reported current age-related needs and 35% anticipated age-related needs. Other considerations included pets, young children, and disabilities.
For age-related adaptations, the leading choices were:
- Pullout cabinets: 62%
- Additional lighting: 55%
- Wide drawer pulls: 50%
- Rounded countertops: 35%
- Nonslip flooring: 33%
These features are about safer and easier daily use, not merely appearance. Pullouts can reduce bending and reaching into deep base cabinets. Layered lighting can improve visibility at counters, sinks, and pathways. Wide pulls may be easier to grasp than small knobs. Rounded edges can reduce the severity of an impact, while flooring needs to balance slip resistance, cleanability, and comfort.

Accessibility should be planned early. Cabinet clearances, appliance placement, aisle width, flooring transitions, lighting controls, and countertop heights are interdependent. A single accessory cannot substitute for a well-considered layout.
Practical shopping ideas for storage and visibility
If you are implementing these findings rather than simply observing them, kitchen drawer organizers and pullout cabinet organizers can help make storage more accessible. Measure the interior width, depth, height, hinges, plumbing obstructions, and drawer-box construction before buying. A product that fits a standard cabinet may not fit a specific custom or semi-custom cabinet.
LED kitchen light bulbs and under-cabinet LED lighting are another practical implementation. Verify fixture compatibility, dimmer compatibility, color temperature, moisture ratings where relevant, and whether new wiring or an electrician is needed. LED lighting may reduce long-term energy use, but installation cost and product quality still matter.
These product categories are implementation options—not evidence that a particular product caused or represents the Houzz trend.

No single flooring category dominated. Vinyl or resilient flooring led at 22%, followed closely by hardwood at 21% and ceramic or porcelain tile at 20%. Engineered wood held 16%, laminate 10%, and natural stone 5%.
The useful conclusion is that the leading materials form a competitive three-way field. Wood-look resilient flooring, including luxury vinyl plank, may appeal to homeowners seeking a practical, water-resistant surface, but the study reports broad material categories and does not endorse a specific product or brand.
Choose flooring based on the actual conditions of the room: moisture exposure, subfloor flatness, transitions to adjacent rooms, expected traffic, pets, cleaning habits, comfort underfoot, repairability, and the installation method. Tile may offer durability but requires careful substrate preparation and grout maintenance. Hardwood can create continuity with surrounding rooms but needs appropriate moisture management. Resilient flooring may simplify installation, but product construction, seam treatment, and subfloor preparation still matter.
10. Sustainable choices are being driven primarily by cost consciousness
Ninety percent of respondents selected at least one sustainable option. More than seven in 10 cited long-term cost effectiveness as the leading motivation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Energy-efficient appliances: 57%
- Environmentally friendly choices: 55%
- VOC-free paints, finishes, or coatings: 24%
- Eco-friendly flooring: 16%
- Eco-friendly materials: 14%
The finding does not mean every sustainable option costs less upfront. It means homeowners commonly view long-term operating cost or value as a reason to select these options. Compare purchase price, installation, energy use, maintenance, expected service life, repairability, and disposal rather than labeling a product sustainable based on one feature.
For example, an efficient appliance may reduce operating costs but require a higher initial investment. LED bulbs can lower electricity consumption, while under-cabinet lighting may also improve visibility. Low-VOC finishes can address indoor-air-quality preferences, but ventilation and proper installation remain important during a remodel.

Collectively, the Houzz findings point to a kitchen that is more integrated with the home but more deliberate about where money goes. Homeowners are making room for cooking and gathering, investing in islands and core surfaces, and using professionals to coordinate complex work. At the same time, they are not necessarily replacing every appliance or adding every available electronic feature.

A practical planning sequence is:
- Define the room’s job. Decide whether it must support cooking, entertaining, homework, aging in place, pet routines, or multiple activities at once.
- Confirm the footprint. Test whether the desired layout works without moving walls. If expanding, investigate structure, utilities, permits, and flooring continuity before finalizing the plan.
- Set a realistic scope and budget. Separate essential construction and infrastructure from finish upgrades that can be deferred.
- Design circulation before selecting the island. An island should fit the room’s clearances, not force people to squeeze around it.
- Plan accessibility and lighting early. Pullouts, drawer storage, wide pulls, layered lighting, and safer flooring work best when integrated into the design.
- Select materials for the household. Compare durability, maintenance, moisture performance, repairability, and long-term operating costs—not only appearance.
- Coordinate the team. Have the contractor, designer, cabinet professional, and relevant trades resolve dimensions and connections before ordering materials.
- Build in contingency. Existing walls, floors, wiring, plumbing, and subfloor conditions can reveal additional work after demolition.
Methodology and limitations
Houzz’s 2025 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study surveyed 1,620 homeowners who had completed a kitchen renovation, were currently undertaking one, or planned to begin one within six months. The study covers the 2024–25 renovation cycle.
Percentages may use different question-specific denominators, and some answer choices changed between studies. Year-over-year comparisons should therefore be limited to changes Houzz explicitly reported. The results describe renovation participants and should not be read as a census of all U.S. kitchens. They also show reported choices and plans, not a prediction model proving that each trend will appear in every market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these trends representative of every U.S. kitchen?
No. The findings come from 1,620 U.S. homeowners who had recently renovated, were renovating, or planned to start a kitchen renovation within six months. They describe renovation behavior, not all kitchens or the entire U.S. population.
How much does a kitchen remodel cost according to Houzz?
The median reported spend for a major kitchen remodel was $60,000. The top 10% spent at least $180,000, and the median for major remodels in kitchens of at least 250 square feet was $72,000. These are national survey figures, not project quotes.
Is traditional kitchen style replacing transitional style?
No. Transitional remained the leading style at 25%. Traditional rose to 14%, ahead of modern at 12% and contemporary at 11%, which supports a relative resurgence rather than a majority position.
What is the most common age-related kitchen improvement in the study?
Pullout cabinets led at 62%, followed by additional lighting at 55%, wide drawer pulls at 50%, rounded countertops at 35%, and nonslip flooring at 33% among the relevant age-related adaptation responses.
Which kitchen flooring material was most popular?
Vinyl or resilient flooring led at 22%, but hardwood at 21% and ceramic or porcelain tile at 20% were close behind. The data is best described as a three-way competition rather than a decisive win.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Houzz’s 2025 study points toward kitchens that are larger, more multifunctional, more professionally coordinated, and more focused on practical long-term value. White and off-white finishes remain common, but traditional details, wood tones, accessibility features, resilient flooring, and carefully chosen efficiency upgrades are giving homeowners ways to make the room warmer and more useful. Treat the findings as planning context—not a prescription—and let the structure, budget, household needs, and building requirements determine the final design.
