1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA successful workplace plaza begins with a site-and-use plan, not a plant list. Map how people move and gather, where sun, wind and water affect the site, and what lies below the paving. Then coordinate accessible routes, shade, seating, soil, planting and stormwater so each element supports the others. Plant for the actual local climate and maintenance capacity, and confirm drainage assemblies, permits and accessibility requirements with the authorities and professionals responsible for the project.
1. Define what the plaza must do
Write a short performance brief before drawing a layout. A workplace plaza may need to provide lunch seating, informal meeting space, a quiet place to rest, an accessible route between entrances, an event setting, or a welcoming building forecourt. List these uses in order of importance and identify the people who will use them: employees, visitors, delivery staff, event attendees and people with mobility, vision or other access needs.

Separate fixed functions from flexible ones. A clear route to the building entrance is a fixed function; movable chairs for an occasional event are flexible. This distinction prevents a seasonal installation or event layout from blocking everyday circulation. The Whole Building Design Guide notes that plazas can support programmed activities as well as informal, self-directed use, so provide durable open space in addition to designated seating and planting areas (Whole Building Design Guide, Plaza).

- Passage: Identify entrances, exits, transit connections, service doors and the routes people actually take rather than only the routes shown on an old plan.
- Comfort: Record the times when summer heat, glare, wind or winter exposure make the space unpleasant.
- Operations: Reserve room for deliveries, emergency access, waste collection, irrigation equipment and maintenance vehicles.
- Resilience: Define what must remain usable after heavy rain, drought, heat, cold, wind or a temporary loss of irrigation.
Turn the brief into measurable design checks: routes remain unobstructed, every seating area is reachable, runoff has a safe destination, planting has enough soil to mature, and maintenance staff can reach the features they must service.

2. Survey the site before selecting a layout
Make a base plan that combines physical conditions with observed behavior. New York City’s plaza-planting guidance emphasizes site-specific selection, adequate soil volume and rooting area, and resilience to stresses such as drought, inundation, wind, heat, cold, compaction, litter and animal damage (NYC Street Design Manual, Plaza Plantings).
Map sun, shade and wind
Observe the site at morning, midday and late afternoon in different seasons, or model those conditions when observation is impossible. Mark existing building shadows, reflected heat from façades, winter sun that may be valuable, and locations exposed to prevailing winds or wind accelerated around corners. Note existing trees and whether they can survive construction or must be protected during work.
Locate movement and desire lines
Trace routes from every relevant entrance to the destinations people use: reception, transit stops, parking, bicycle storage, cafés, elevators and neighboring buildings. Watch where pedestrians cut across paving, queue or pause. A desire line that is ignored in the plan often becomes a trampled planting bed after opening.

Document what is below and around the plaza
Confirm utilities, structural slabs, waterproofing, drainage outlets, garage roofs, loading areas, foundations and root barriers. A plaza over a below-grade structure cannot be treated like open ground; available soil depth, drainage and tree-root volume may be limited. Coordinate with the structural and civil teams before promising large trees or deep rain gardens.
Trace water on a storm day
Record roof downpipes, neighboring runoff, low points, ponding, blocked inlets and the legal discharge point. Identify whether water can be conveyed into planted areas, detained, infiltrated or must be piped away. Confirm soil infiltration and groundwater assumptions through project-specific geotechnical and civil review rather than relying on a generic detail.

Record operational constraints
Document available water taps, electrical connections, storage, maintenance access, snow or leaf-clearing routes, waste collection and security sightlines. These constraints influence planting height, furniture placement and whether an irrigation system is practical.
3. Lay out accessible circulation before planting
Draw the primary accessible routes and connections first. Connect entrances and important destinations with clear, predictable paths; then place seating, trees, planters and event zones around those routes. Keep level changes, furniture and mature branches from narrowing access to seats or amenities. Exact widths, slopes, surface requirements, detectable warnings and handrail provisions depend on the project’s jurisdiction, building type and applicable accessibility standard, so verify them with the authority having jurisdiction.

Paving must shed rainwater without creating an excessive cross-slope, abrupt transition or slippery low point. The Whole Building Design Guide identifies both drainage slopes and accessibility as plaza design considerations (WBDG, Plaza). Have the civil or accessibility professional check the final spot elevations, not just the conceptual plan.
- Keep a continuous route between each entrance and the seating or gathering areas intended for public use.
- Leave maneuvering space beside seats, tables and other amenities rather than treating the route as the only accessible feature.
- Place tree grates, flush covers and drainage inlets so they do not create trip hazards or unusable joints.
- Maintain visibility at crossings, doors, corners and security-sensitive edges as vegetation grows.
- Use a durable, slip-resistant surface and detail transitions between paving, planting beds and raised elements.
4. Design shade around people and activities
Shade is useful only when it reaches the places people occupy. Position canopy trees, structures and seating together so lunch tables, meeting areas and waiting zones receive shade at the times they are used. Seating and shade are among the features that can encourage plaza use, according to the Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG, Plaza).
Choose a shade mix
In-ground canopy trees can provide the broadest long-term shade, but they require sufficient soil volume, root space, drainage and protection from compaction. Smaller trees, pergolas or other structures can supplement shade where utilities, slabs or sightlines limit canopy size. Use more than one strategy when the plaza must work during both establishment and maturity.

Protect winter usefulness
Deciduous trees can admit low winter sun while shading summer seating; evergreen plants can screen cold winds but may block valued winter light. Assess the seasonal balance for the building façade, adjacent apartments, solar equipment and security cameras. Do not assume a species is suitable merely because it is commonly planted elsewhere.
Keep mature growth out of the route
Allow for the tree canopy, trunk flare, shrub spread and root-zone protection at maturity. Pruning a plant indefinitely to preserve a path usually increases cost and weakens the landscape. Use soil-protection measures in heavily trafficked areas, such as well-detailed planting edges or load-bearing surfaces over root zones, while preserving access for people and maintenance equipment.
5. Integrate stormwater, planting and paving
Use the landscape to help manage runoff where site conditions and approvals allow, but do not treat planting as a substitute for engineered drainage. Direct clean roof or paving runoff into planted areas when elevations, soil and overflow routes make that safe. Provide positive drainage and a controlled overflow for storms that exceed the planting system’s capacity.
Vegetated conveyance and treatment
Vegetated swales can attenuate flows and remove pollutants before runoff leaves a site; Sacramento County identifies them as one treatment option in its commercial and institutional development guidance (Sacramento County Design Guidelines, Chapter 5). A swale, rain garden or planter needs a defined inlet, soil profile, underdrain or overflow where required, erosion protection and a maintenance plan. The appropriate assembly depends on hydrology, soil, groundwater, structural loading and local stormwater rules.
Coordinate grades with accessibility
Set finished-floor, paving, curb and planting-bed elevations together. Check that runoff does not cross an accessible route, pond at a doorway or discharge onto a neighboring property. A civil engineer or qualified drainage designer should verify calculations, connections and permit requirements.

Account for below-grade structures
On a garage roof or podium, confirm allowable loads, waterproofing protection, drainage mats, root barriers and inspection access. Raised beds should be only as tall as needed for the required soil depth; NYC guidance also calls for positive drainage below raised planting where subsurface constraints require it (NYC Street Design Manual, Plaza Plantings).
6. Build a locally appropriate, layered plant palette
Choose plants after the site survey, not before it. Match every plant to sun or shade, soil moisture, heat, cold, wind, compaction, salt or other site stresses, expected mature size and the maintenance resources available. A plant that tolerates drought in open ground may fail in a confined, irrigated planter; a wet-site plant may decline where a podium bed drains rapidly.
Use layers for structure and seasonal interest
A typical hierarchy can include canopy trees, accent or flowering trees, shrubs and groundcover. Sacramento County describes this layered approach, while NYC guidance recommends combinations that provide interest through the year (Sacramento County Design Guidelines, Chapter 5; NYC Street Design Manual, Plaza Plantings).
- Canopy: Supplies high shade and spatial definition where rooting volume and overhead clearance are adequate.
- Small trees and accents: Add flowers, bark, fall color or a human-scaled focal point without overwhelming a constrained plaza.
- Shrubs: Screen service areas, define edges and provide winter form, but keep mature height compatible with sightlines.
- Groundcovers and perennials: Cover soil, reduce erosion and add texture or seasonal color; select types that can tolerate foot traffic at edges and realistic watering intervals.
Favor native or climate-adapted plants suited to the local rain-garden conditions when they also fit the plaza’s light, soil and maintenance regime. “Native” alone does not guarantee tolerance of reflected heat, compacted soil, salt, drought or inundation. Obtain a location-specific list from a qualified designer or local nursery rather than applying a universal mixture.

| Approach | Strengths | Risks or constraints | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-ground canopy trees with adjacent seating | Potential for broad shade, strong sense of place and generous root volume where soil is continuous. | Requires protection from compaction, adequate soil and coordination with utilities and paving. | Open sites with available soil and long-term ownership. |
| Raised planters over a slab | Can add planting where excavation is limited and help define gathering zones. | Needs structural review, waterproofing protection, positive drainage and careful edge detailing; soil volume may limit tree size. | Podiums, garages and constrained urban plazas. |
| Distributed smaller trees and planted pockets | Spreads shade and visual interest, preserves larger open areas and can phase construction. | Individual pockets may dry quickly and provide less continuous canopy. | Plazas with competing routes, utilities or event requirements. |
| Vegetated swale or rain-garden edge | Can receive runoff and provide habitat and seasonal planting interest. | Needs correct elevations, overflow, suitable soil, safety review and regular inspection. | Sites with a verified runoff source, adequate area and an approved discharge strategy. |
| Shade structures supplemented by planting | Immediate, predictable shade while trees establish; useful where roots or utilities limit canopy. | Structures require foundations, inspections and repairs and do not replace the ecological or seasonal value of plants. | High-use seating that needs shade from opening day. |
8. Plan establishment and everyday maintenance
The opening-day appearance is not the finished landscape. Establishment watering, weeding, pruning, replacement planting and drainage inspection determine whether the intended design survives. Assign these tasks before construction is complete and include them in the operating budget.
Write a responsibility matrix
Name the party responsible for each task: watering new trees and beds, checking irrigation, clearing inlets and overflows, removing litter, pruning, replacing failed plants, repairing edging and keeping accessible surfaces clear. If a public agency is not maintaining the planting, NYC guidance indicates that an agreement should set out maintenance responsibilities (NYC Street Design Manual, Plaza Plantings).
Provide access and water
Locate hose connections, irrigation controls, valves, storage and maintenance gates so staff can reach them without crossing planted beds or blocking pedestrians. Confirm who pays for water and seasonal system activation. Where irrigation is temporary for establishment, define the handover date and the trigger for reducing watering as roots develop.
Commission the landscape
Before handover, inspect soil depths, drainage outlets, tree anchoring, plant quantities, paving transitions, irrigation coverage and clear routes. Test inlets and overflows with water. Give the facilities team as-built drawings, plant names, watering instructions, pruning limits and a seasonal inspection calendar.
9. Treat codes and permits as project-specific
Confirm requirements with the local planning, building, accessibility, public-works and stormwater authorities. They may govern planting-bed dimensions, tree protection, soil, grading, accessible routes, utilities, discharge, fire access and maintenance agreements. A detail that is lawful in one city may be inappropriate or prohibited in another.
New York City provides a useful illustration of why jurisdiction matters: its public-plaza zoning rules include at least 20 percent planting-bed area and at least four trees, with additional requirements tied to plaza area, tree soil volumes and circulation paths (NYC Department of City Planning, Zoning Resolution Chapter 7: Public Plazas). Those are NYC public-plaza provisions, not a national workplace-plaza standard. Check the live zoning text and applicability before relying on any figure.
Engage a landscape architect, civil engineer, structural engineer or accessibility specialist when grading, stormwater treatment, a below-grade structure, public right-of-way or complex planting systems are involved. Their role is to coordinate the disciplines and document approvals, not merely to select attractive plants.
10. Use a practical project sequence
- Set objectives: List users, activities, peak periods, required routes, shade goals, stormwater objectives and operational constraints.
- Survey existing conditions: Map sun, wind, desire lines, utilities, structures, soils, runoff sources, outlets and maintenance access.
- Confirm rules: Identify applicable zoning, building, accessibility, stormwater, tree-protection and public-realm requirements.
- Reserve circulation: Fix accessible connections, door clearances, emergency access and service paths before placing planting or furniture.
- Test grading and water: Establish paving elevations, planted inlets, overflow routes and drainage assemblies with the civil and structural teams.
- Place shade and seating: Match canopy, structures and gathering areas to the hours of use while retaining visibility and winter usefulness.
- Develop the palette: Select layered, locally suitable plants for actual light, moisture, stress, mature size and maintenance capacity.
- Detail protection: Prevent soil compaction, protect trunks and waterproofing, and keep roots, grates and edging compatible with accessible movement.
- Assign care: Fund establishment watering, inspections, pruning, litter removal, irrigation, replacements and stormwater maintenance.
- Commission and monitor: Test drainage, verify routes, correct failures, and adjust watering or planting after the first seasons of use.
Common failures and how to prevent them
- Choosing plants from a generic list: Replace the list with a site-based palette tied to local climate, soil, water and stress conditions.
- Adding planters after paving is fixed: Reserve soil volume, drainage and root space during early layout work.
- Relying on a single low point: Provide positive drainage, overflow and maintainable inlets so one blocked feature does not flood a route.
- Putting shade where nobody sits: Map activity times and place seating and canopy as one coordinated decision.
- Ignoring mature dimensions: Draw the full canopy, trunk and root-zone footprint and protect it from compaction.
- Leaving maintenance undefined: Put responsibilities, access, water and inspection intervals in the operating agreement and handover documents.
- Applying another jurisdiction’s numbers: Treat published requirements as local examples and verify the rules that govern the actual property.
A plaza that works in every season
Year-round performance comes from coordinating use, movement, shade, water, plants and care as one system. Start with observed site conditions and the people’s real routes. Fit shade and seating to those activities, send runoff to safe and maintainable destinations, select plants for the local stresses, and fund the work required after opening. The result is not a fixed planting recipe but a documented, code-checked process that can produce a comfortable, accessible and durable workplace plaza.
