Start with the transportation agency that owns the road, not a generic map. Find the project’s current closure notice and signed detour map, identify the route for your exact direction and ramp, check the local 511 service immediately before departure, and verify that the alternate route accepts your vehicle or travel mode. Overpass work may close the entire structure, one lane, a ramp, or only a movement at an interchange, so there is no universally correct detour.
Construction schedules and traffic conditions can change while a project is under way. Treat agency notices and field signs as the controlling instructions, and recheck them each time you travel through the work area.

What to establish before you choose a route
An overpass project can affect traffic in several different ways. A notice may describe a full bridge closure, a single-lane operation, a ramp closure, a temporary signal, overnight work, or a restriction on a particular turning movement. Those conditions produce different detours.
Recommended Free Tools
- The road and structure: Record the highway, cross street, interchange or milepoint, and the name used by the agency for the project.
- Your movement: Note whether you are travelling northbound, southbound, eastbound or westbound, and whether you enter from a particular ramp. A detour for traffic leaving a ramp may not serve traffic approaching it from the other direction.
- Your destination: A route that bypasses the overpass may still be unsuitable if it leaves you on the wrong side of a closed ramp or removes access to a nearby business, neighborhood or emergency facility.
- Your mode: A passenger car, tractor-trailer, trailer combination, bicycle, pedestrian or mobility device may have different permissions and physical constraints.
- Your timing: Overnight work, peak-period congestion and temporary signal operation can change the delay even when the signed route is unchanged.
Write these details down before searching. They let you reject a plausible-looking map that does not apply to your trip.

Find the official detour
1. Identify the responsible agency
Start with the state department of transportation, county highway department, city public works department or toll-road authority responsible for the road. Search its construction or project page using the route number, crossing name and nearby community. The project page is the best place to find closure dates, affected movements, a signed detour map and restrictions.
Connecticut transportation guidance describes a detour as a temporary route established when a roadway section or ramp closes for construction. That definition matters: an agency may publish several temporary routes for one project rather than one alternate road for everyone.
2. Read the notice, not just the map
Check the text surrounding the map for dates, hours, vehicle restrictions, access exceptions and the direction of travel. Look for wording such as “northbound only,” “ramp closed,” “local access maintained,” “overnight closure” or “one lane controlled by temporary signals.” A map without those qualifications can be misleading.
3. Use the local 511 service
Use the transportation agency’s 511 website or telephone service close to departure. New York 511, for example, allows travellers to examine current construction, closures, incidents, alternate routes and traffic speeds. Its construction and maintenance information is updated as work starts, finishes or conditions change. A saved screenshot or an old social-media post cannot provide the same assurance.
4. Check again if the trip is later
If you leave hours after checking, or the project continues for several days, repeat the check. A lane may reopen, a ramp may close for a new phase, or an incident may make the signed route slow or temporarily unusable.

Step-by-step detour planning
- Define the trip. Write down the overpass, your direction, entry ramp, destination and approximate departure time. Include whether you are carrying a trailer, operating a long load or travelling without a motor vehicle.
- Open the current project page. Confirm that the notice applies to the date and hours of your trip. Prefer a page maintained by the road owner or project agency.
- Locate the movement-specific instruction. Match your direction and ramp to the agency’s written route or map. Do not assume that a detour labelled for one interchange movement applies to another.
- Trace every turn. Follow the route from your approach road through the closure and back to the road serving your destination. Note turns, temporary signals, limited-access entrances and any point at which local traffic is separated from through traffic.
- Check live conditions. Use 511 to review current speeds, incidents, additional closures and alternate-route conditions. If the project page and live service disagree, follow the latest agency instruction and the signs in the field; allow for the possibility that a change is still being deployed.
- Verify suitability. Check clearance, turning space, lane availability, vehicle-length or trailer warnings, pedestrian and bicycle access, mobility-device access and emergency-only provisions.
- Build a time buffer. Use current traffic speeds and the number of constrained points to estimate delay. Add a buffer appropriate to the uncertainty of the project rather than relying on a universal number.
- Recheck before leaving. Confirm the notice and 511 conditions again, then follow the temporary signs and traffic controllers through the work zone.
Understand what “detour” means for different closures
| Construction condition | What it can mean for your trip | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Full overpass closure | All traffic must leave the normal approach and use a signed route around the structure. | Whether the route is separated by direction, and where it rejoins the original road. |
| One lane open | Traffic may alternate through the work area or move under temporary signal control. | Signal location, queue risk, lane width and whether pedestrians retain a passage. |
| Ramp closure | The mainline may remain open while one entrance or exit is unavailable. | The detour from your specific ramp and whether local access is maintained. |
| Movement restriction | Only a turn, merge or direction may be prohibited. | The exact prohibited movement and the route for traffic making it. |
| Overnight or intermittent work | The route may change by time of day, with normal operation during some hours. | Start and end times, enforcement of the closure and the latest status. |
| Temporary traffic control | Flaggers or temporary signals may meter vehicles through a narrow section. | Expected queues, stop locations and whether the control applies in both directions. |
Wisconsin Department of Transportation information for I-43/WIS 23 in Sheboygan County illustrates why this distinction matters: the project lists separate detours for northbound I-43 to westbound WIS 23 and eastbound WIS 23 to northbound I-43. The same project information describes County PP overpass work with one lane controlled by temporary signals while pedestrian access is maintained. These are examples of project-specific arrangements, not a general route for other locations.
Check whether the route fits your vehicle or travel mode
Cars and motorcycles
Confirm that the alternate route remains open to general traffic and does not use a local-access road with a restriction that excludes through vehicles. Watch for narrow lanes, temporary signals and turns that are harder to see at night.

Trucks, trailers and long loads
Do not judge suitability from distance alone. A route can be legally open yet physically difficult because of a sharp turn, limited lane width or an awkward approach. Montana Department of Transportation’s Kootenai River Bridge notice calls out a sharp 90-degree turn on its detour as a potential issue for trailers and long loads. That warning is a model for the check you should make on any project: inspect every turn and obey posted vehicle restrictions.
Where a notice does not state whether a combination vehicle is permitted, contact the agency or its project representative before departure. Do not substitute a different route based only on a consumer navigation app; it may not account for temporary geometry or a signed restriction.
Pedestrians, cyclists and mobility-device users
Look for a separate non-motorized route. A vehicle detour may travel on a limited-access road or lack a safe shoulder. Washington State Department of Transportation information for the SR 536 Skagit River Bridge distinguishes vehicle traffic from pedestrian, bicycle, mobility-device and emergency access. Confirm which of those categories remains open, where the crossing is located and whether a temporary path has different hours or surfaces.

Emergency access
Some projects identify an emergency-only passage. Treat that as an exception for authorized responders, not an alternate route for ordinary travel. If you need emergency access for a facility or event, coordinate with the responsible agency rather than entering a closed section.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEstimate how much extra time to allow
No single allowance applies to every overpass project. Delay depends on closure type, time of day, queue length, incidents and the capacity of the alternate road. Official material for the Gold Star Bridge project advises travellers to plan ahead and allow extra time during overnight work, but it does not establish a universal number of minutes.
A practical estimate
- Use 511’s current speeds to estimate the normal travel time on the detour and on the approach roads.
- Identify constrained points: a temporary signal, a single lane, a sharp turn, a busy intersection or a merge back into the original route.
- Compare the live condition with a normal, unconstrained trip at the same time of day.
- Add a buffer large enough to cover an additional signal cycle or a developing queue. Increase it when the notice describes overnight work, peak-period delays or changing phases.
- For a time-critical arrival, make an earlier departure the primary safeguard rather than assuming the map’s distance predicts travel time.
Recheck immediately before departure. A route that was moving well in the morning can slow after a lane shift, incident or work crew change.
Compare two or more agency-approved routes
When the project page identifies more than one viable route, compare them using the same questions rather than choosing the shortest line on a map.
| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Evidence to use |
|---|---|---|
| Applicability | Does it serve my direction, entry ramp and destination? | The project’s written movement description and map. |
| Current conditions | Are there incidents, queues or another closure on the alternate? | Live 511 speeds, incidents and closure listings. |
| Vehicle fit | Can my trailer or long load make every turn, and are there clearance or length restrictions? | Project warnings, posted signs and agency confirmation. |
| Travel mode | Is the route open and safe for pedestrians, bicycles and mobility devices? | Dedicated access instructions, not the motor-vehicle map alone. |
| Predictability | Does it depend on a temporary signal or a narrow, easily blocked section? | Traffic-control description and current queue conditions. |
| Return to route | Where does it reconnect, and can I still reach my destination? | Full route trace from approach to final connection. |
Use the agency’s instructions and field signs to resolve a conflict. Do not invent a third route from an outdated map or from a route that appears open in a general mapping application.

Follow the detour safely in the field
- Leave enough space to read advance-warning signs and move into the correct lane before the closure.
- Follow the temporary arrow signs even if a navigation application proposes a different turn.
- Reduce speed through the work area and obey temporary speed limits, flaggers and signals.
- Expect workers, equipment, lane shifts and stopped traffic after a signposted turn.
- Do not cross barriers or use a closed ramp to recover a missed turn. Continue to the next signed decision point and rejoin the official route safely.
- For pedestrians and cyclists, use the marked temporary crossing or path; do not enter a vehicle-only bypass.
Gold Star Bridge project guidance specifically tells drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time during overnight work, follow posted detour signs, reduce speed and stay alert around workers and equipment. Those instructions apply to the work zone you encounter, even if the route looked uncomplicated on the project map.
Common planning failures and fixes
Using one detour for every direction
Symptom: You find a map but cannot tell whether it applies to your ramp. Fix: Match the movement description to your direction and entry point. Look for separate routes, as the I-43/WIS 23 project provides.
Relying on an old screenshot
Symptom: Signs or traffic do not match the route saved on your phone. Fix: Open the current project page and 511 service before leaving. Construction and maintenance information can change as work starts, finishes or conditions shift.
Assuming the bridge is completely closed
Symptom: You take a long bypass even though one lane is operating. Fix: Read whether the project uses one lane, temporary signals, a ramp closure or a full closure. The Wisconsin example combines a one-lane overpass operation with other closed and detoured ramps.

Assuming motor-vehicle access includes everyone
Symptom: A walking or cycling trip leads to a limited-access road or a missing crossing. Fix: Find the project’s separate pedestrian, bicycle and mobility-device instructions, as WSDOT does for the Skagit River Bridge.
Planning only for distance
Symptom: A short alternate takes much longer because of a queue or temporary signal. Fix: Use live speeds and incident information, then add a buffer for constrained points.
Examples of what official project pages can reveal
I-43/WIS 23, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin
The Wisconsin project information describes 2026 bridge and ramp work, direction-specific detours, expected peak-period delays and links to 511 traffic maps. It also describes County PP overpass work with one lane controlled by temporary signals and pedestrian access maintained. The lesson is to read each movement and each structure separately; a project page can contain several operating patterns.
Gold Star Bridge, Connecticut
Project guidance emphasizes planning ahead, allowing extra time during overnight work, following detour signs, reducing speed and staying alert near workers and equipment. It is a useful example of a notice that focuses on behavior and timing as well as the route itself.
SR 536 Skagit River Bridge, Washington
Washington State Department of Transportation information identifies the signed detour and distinguishes vehicle traffic from pedestrian, bicycle, mobility-device and emergency access. Check the live project status before relying on any one of those access arrangements.
Kootenai River Bridge, Montana
Montana Department of Transportation gives a detour and warns that a sharp 90-degree turn may affect trailers and long loads. The example shows why route suitability requires more than confirming that a road is open.
A final departure checklist
- Road, overpass and direction identified.
- Correct ramp and destination matched to the agency’s movement-specific route.
- Closure type, dates and hours checked on the current project page.
- Official detour map or written turns available for reference.
- 511 conditions checked for closures, incidents, speeds and alternate-route queues.
- Vehicle length, trailer turning, lane width and other restrictions confirmed.
- Pedestrian, bicycle, mobility-device or emergency access verified separately where relevant.
- Extra time and a realistic buffer allowed.
- Temporary signs, signals, speed limits and worker instructions understood.
- Project page and 511 status rechecked immediately before departure.
Project information cited here was checked on October 13, 2026. Closure timing and access arrangements are volatile, so the current agency notice and signs at the work site take precedence over this general guidance.
