Start with the agency that controls the closed road, bridge, entrance or trail, then verify every destination on your itinerary. A closure may isolate one side of a river, leave a park open through another entrance, or make a planned stop unreachable with no safe detour. Do not rely on a familiar route, a park name in a navigation app or an old map. Confirm the restriction, identify what remains accessible, calculate the real time cost and rebuild the day around information current just before departure.
Confirm the closure before changing your trip
Closure information is location-specific and can change quickly. Begin with the official notice rather than a social-media post, an old visitor comment or a route suggested by your phone. The National Park Service (NPS) Active Alerts page describes its entries as timely, visit-impacting information and directs visitors to the relevant park website for details. For a bridge, state route or county road outside park boundaries, check the road authority responsible for that segment as well as the park or destination website.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the notice closely enough to answer six questions:
- What exactly is closed: a named bridge, mile of road, entrance station, trail, tunnel or facility?
- Where are the closure limits, and which destinations lie on each side?
- When does the restriction start and end, and does it apply all day or only during stated hours?
- Which users are affected: motor vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, shuttles or oversized vehicles?
- Is reopening tied to inspection, construction progress, weather or another condition?
- Does the authority name a detour, alternate entrance or “no alternate route” condition?
Copy the notice’s update date and the agency’s status-page address into your trip notes. A closure that is accurate when you book lodging may be different when you arrive.

Separate a closure from a facility shutdown
An open road does not guarantee that a trailhead, campground, visitor center, parking area or lodge is operating. Check road status and destination status separately. Likewise, a closed connecting road does not necessarily close an entire park. Your plan should identify the exact entrance and facility for every stop, not simply list the park’s name.
Define what the closure actually blocks
Put the closure on a map, then list the places you intend to visit on both sides. Mark the last confirmed access point before the restriction and the first confirmed access point beyond it. This prevents a common mistake: treating a large park as one reachable point when a bridge or mountain road divides its districts.
| Item to verify | What to record | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Closed segment | Road or bridge name, endpoints and map position | Shows which connections disappear and which may remain open |
| Schedule | Start date, end date, daily hours and overnight periods | A morning departure may work while an evening return does not |
| Travel mode | Vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, shuttles and restricted vehicle classes | A path open to pedestrians is not automatically a legal vehicle route |
| Destinations | Trailheads, entrances, lodging, campgrounds, supplies and facilities | Confirms whether the purpose of the trip is still reachable |
| Reopening certainty | Fixed date or conditional estimate | Prevents a hard-to-reverse itinerary from depending on an unconfirmed opening |
Never cross barricades, use a closed road, walk through an active work zone or infer permission from an empty gatehouse. A detour must be legal, physically suitable for your vehicle and confirmed by the responsible authority.
Is there an alternate route?
Look for explicit wording, not an assumption based on the map. A notice may name a signed detour, identify another entrance, provide a shuttle or state that no crossing is possible. If the notice does not identify a route, ask the agency before treating any line on a navigation map as usable.
When no detour exists
Olympic National Park’s Hoh River Bridge notice provides the clearest example. The National Park Service says: “There is no alternative route or detour across the Hoh River.” The 95-year-old bridge cannot maintain one travel lane beside the work zone during the listed construction periods. In this situation, the correct response is not to search for a back road across the river. Separate the itinerary into areas that can be reached from each side, move the affected stop to another date or replace it.
The same notice says the Hoh Rain Forest remains accessible from Forks during construction. That distinction matters: the bridge closure blocks a connection, not every visit to the rain forest. Destinations north and south of the bridge must be assessed individually.

When another entrance is confirmed
Mount Rainier National Park illustrates the opposite case. During a listed overnight closure of SR 706 outside the park, the Nisqually Entrance has no access. The park directs visitors seeking Paradise to enter through the Stevens Canyon Entrance via SR 123. This is a workable alternative because the park—not a navigation app—confirms the entrance, route and destination relationship.
Do not generalize the Mount Rainier solution to another park. An alternate entrance may be farther away, seasonal, subject to vehicle restrictions or unable to reach the facility you need. Confirm that the named entrance is open at your travel time and that it reaches your specific trailhead, lodging or viewpoint.
How much extra time will the detour take?
Use an official estimate when one is published, then calculate the entire day rather than just the additional miles. The Olympic National Park Hoh River Bridge notice estimates that alternate routes around the east side of the Olympic Peninsula add at least four hours during the stated closure. That figure is specific to that route and closure; it is not a general rule for bridge closures.
For any other trip, compare the original and revised plans using the same departure point, destination and return point. Include the approach to the alternate entrance, likely parking search, food or fuel stops, required reservations, and the time lost if a closure begins before you exit.
| Comparison | Original plan | Revised plan |
|---|---|---|
| Destination reached | Exact trailhead, entrance or facility intended | Same destination, a different confirmed entrance or a replacement stop |
| Driving burden | Normal route time and distance | Official detour estimate where available; otherwise a route-authority or map estimate checked against agency restrictions |
| Access window | Opening and closing times on the normal route | Closure hours plus the alternate entrance’s hours and seasonal status |
| Stops affected | All planned stops | Stops retained only after destination-by-destination confirmation |
| Day feasibility | Time available for the visit | Time remaining after detour, parking, meals and the return journey |
If the revised drive consumes most of the day, changing the date or dropping the stop is more realistic than promising a rushed visit. Record the agency’s wording and the date of its estimate so that you do not present a conditional or route-specific number as a universal travel time.
Rebuild the itinerary around reachable areas
Once you know the closure’s boundaries, rebuild the schedule in a deliberate sequence.

- Group stops by side of the closure. Put every trailhead, viewpoint, campground, lodging property and supply stop into a north/south, east/west or before/after-bridge group. This exposes plans that require crossing the closed segment more than once.
- Keep only confirmed destinations. Check the official road-status and destination pages for each stop. A road can be open while a facility is closed, and a park can be reachable through one entrance while your intended district is not.
- Choose a legal access plan. Use the named detour or alternate entrance if the agency provides one. If it says there is no alternative route, remove that crossing from the plan rather than searching for an unofficial bypass.
- Reorder the day. Visit reachable stops on the same side together. Add buffer for the stated closure hours, parking and the possibility that construction traffic delays the approach.
- Decide whether the trip still works. If a required destination cannot be reached, shift the reservation or travel date, select a replacement that is confirmed open or cancel that segment. Do not leave an inaccessible stop in the schedule with a note to “see what happens.”
- Update people and bookings. Tell lodging hosts, travel companions and activity providers which entrance and arrival time you now expect. Confirm that a changed approach does not make a reservation’s check-in window impossible.
Check practical constraints beyond the map
Alternate roads can have requirements that the original route did not. Verify vehicle height, width, weight and traction rules; bicycle and pedestrian permissions; shuttle reservations; seasonal opening; weather exposure; fuel and food availability; parking capacity; and whether a gate closes at a stated hour. Mount Rainier’s current status information, for example, distinguishes access routes and lists vehicle restrictions and delays. Treat those details as part of the route, not as footnotes.
If your party includes a trailer, recreational vehicle, low-clearance car, mobility device or bicycle, ask the road or park authority whether the alternate route is suitable. A route that appears shorter may include a restriction that makes it unusable for your group.

Can you still reach the park from the other entrance?
Sometimes, but only if the agency confirms that entrance as a route to your destination. Use this four-part check:
- Entrance: Is it open during your arrival and departure hours?
- Connection: Does the internal or approach road from that entrance remain open?
- Destination: Does it reach your planned trailhead, campground, lodge or viewpoint rather than merely the park boundary?
- Return: Can you leave by the same route before the closure or gate hours take effect?
Mount Rainier’s instruction to use Stevens Canyon Entrance via SR 123 for Paradise during the SR 706 overnight closure satisfies this test. A generic “the park has another entrance” statement does not. Large parks may have entrances that serve entirely different districts, and a seasonal entrance may be closed even when the park’s main page appears open.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use GPS as a helper, not the authority
Navigation apps are useful for comparing distances and visualizing a detour, but they may not know a newly imposed gate closure, a construction-only restriction or the difference between a park entrance and a public road that stops before your destination. Mount Rainier warns that it has five entrances and that GPS may send visitors to the wrong entrance or toward closed gates; reaching the correct entrance can require hours of rerouting.
Set the confirmed entrance or trailhead as the destination, not merely the park name. Compare the route with the park’s directions and maps, then check for road restrictions in the agency notice. If GPS and the official status page disagree, follow the current agency direction and ask the agency for clarification before departure.

A printed regional road atlas or downloaded park map can help you understand the geography when you are rearranging a multi-stop trip. It cannot show a live closure. Keep official park and road-authority alerts as the source of truth.
Recheck immediately before departure
Closure schedules, road conditions and reopening decisions are volatile. Recheck the park alert, road-status page and responsible road authority shortly before entering the affected area, even if you checked when booking. Pay particular attention to overnight work windows, weather-triggered changes, inspection-dependent reopening and unexpected incidents.
Save the relevant status pages in your trip notes and, where service is unreliable, download directions or maps in advance. Tell a companion the confirmed route and the point at which you will turn around if conditions differ from the notice. Carry enough fuel, water and time to avoid making an unsafe decision because the detour is longer than expected.
Two closure scenarios to use as planning models
Hoh River Bridge, Olympic National Park: a divided itinerary
The Olympic notice, updated October 9, 2026, lists overnight and six-day closure periods in September and October 2026. It explains that the 95-year-old bridge cannot keep one travel lane beside the work zone and states that no alternative route or detour crosses the Hoh River. The Hoh Rain Forest remains accessible from Forks.

A traveler should therefore map destinations north and south of the bridge, retain the Hoh Rain Forest only if the Forks approach fits the schedule, and remove any plan that requires crossing the river during the closure. The agency’s estimate of at least four additional hours for routes around the east side of the Olympic Peninsula may make a same-day connection impractical. That estimate applies to this Olympic example, not to another park or bridge.
SR 706 near Mount Rainier: an alternate entrance
For a listed overnight closure of SR 706 outside Mount Rainier, the Nisqually Entrance is inaccessible during the stated period. The park directs visitors headed to Paradise to use Stevens Canyon Entrance via SR 123. The traveler still must verify the entrance’s operating hours, road conditions, vehicle restrictions and the time needed to reach Paradise from that side.
The contrast between these cases is the essential planning lesson: one closure requires separating destinations because no crossing exists; the other permits the intended destination through a specifically confirmed entrance. The notice, not the apparent shape of the map, determines which situation you face.
A compact decision checklist
- Have you read the latest official closure notice and recorded its update date?
- Do you know the exact closed segment, dates, hours and affected travel modes?
- Have you listed every planned destination, entrance, facility and lodging stop on each side?
- Does the authority name a legal detour, shuttle or alternate entrance?
- If it says there is no alternate route, have you removed the crossing rather than improvising one?
- Have you checked vehicle, seasonal, weather, parking and gate-hour constraints?
- Have you compared the complete revised day, including the return trip, against your reservations?
- Have you checked official status again immediately before departure?
Bottom line
Plan from the closure outward: verify the responsible agency’s notice, map exactly what it separates, confirm each destination independently and use only a named detour or alternate entrance. Olympic’s Hoh River Bridge closure shows why a park can remain partly accessible while a connection is impossible; Mount Rainier shows how an agency-confirmed entrance can preserve access to a specific destination. Recheck the status just before travel, because the safest and most accurate route is the one the responsible authority says is open now.
