How to Plan a Trip Along East Colfax Avenue During 2026–2027 Construction

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As checked October 17, 2026: East Colfax remains open during the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) build, but your route depends on the exact block and travel time. From Broadway to Colorado Boulevard, the two center lanes became bus-only on September 27, 2026; passenger vehicles use the outside lanes, while 15 and 15L riders board at center station platforms. Before leaving, check Denver’s current East Colfax BRT construction notice for your address or cross street and RTD’s service alerts for your stop and direction.

What is open, and what changed?

The construction information that applies most broadly is the lane arrangement between Broadway and Colorado Boulevard. The City and County of Denver states: “Beginning Sunday, September 27, 2026, the two center lanes of East Colfax Avenue from Broadway to Colorado Blvd will be bus-only lanes.” Cars, delivery vehicles and other passenger vehicles should remain in the outside traffic lanes in that section. Do not rely on an older map that shows general traffic in the center lanes.

RTD 15 and 15L customers use center station platforms in the same Broadway-to-Colorado section. A station may be on the opposite side of the roadway from a familiar curb stop, and the usable entrance can vary while work proceeds. Confirm the platform, direction and walking approach in the current RTD information before setting out.

“Open” does not mean that every turn, driveway, parking space, sidewalk segment or bus stop is unchanged. The city’s project principles are to maintain access to businesses, one traffic lane in each direction on East Colfax, and 15/15L service, with temporary stops when necessary. Those are corridor-level construction principles, not a day-specific guarantee for an individual property or stop.

Project duration

Denver says construction began in October 2024 and continues through 2027. A trip in one month can therefore differ from a trip to the same address later in the project. Treat every journey as date- and block-specific rather than assuming that a route you used last week will remain available.

Five project segments

Denver describes five segments:

  1. Broadway to Williams Street
  2. Williams Street to Colorado Boulevard
  3. Colorado Boulevard to Niagara Street
  4. Niagara Street to Yosemite Street
  5. Yosemite Street to I-225

The segment list identifies the geography, not a promise about which segment is active on a particular day. Select the notice that covers your destination and the streets you will use to reach it. Do not infer current work from an older announcement about a different segment.

Use this planning sequence before every trip

1. Fix the address, date and arrival window

Write down the exact street number, nearest cross street and the time you expect to arrive and leave. “Colfax Avenue” spans many blocks; a condition at Broadway is not evidence about a driveway near Niagara Street. Include the direction of travel and whether you need a curb, accessible entrance, loading area or bicycle parking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Read the current Denver segment notice

Open Denver’s East Colfax BRT project page and choose the current construction notice for your segment. Read the notice for the street approach as well as the destination block. Look specifically for:

  • traffic-lane shifts, turn restrictions and signed detours;
  • sidewalk or crosswalk changes and the designated pedestrian route;
  • parking, loading-zone and curb restrictions;
  • driveway or alley access instructions;
  • work dates, hours and any restrictions that apply only on certain days; and
  • flaggers, temporary signals or other directions you must follow on site.

Denver’s project page also links to construction updates and a rider-access resource. Use the notice with the most recent date for your block; a historical announcement is not a live condition.

3. Check RTD separately when riding transit

For route 15 or 15L, check RTD service alerts for the intended stop and direction after reading the city notice. Verify the actual temporary boarding location, not just the stop name in a trip planner. Look for a closure, relocation, temporary platform, stop-skipping instruction or delay advisory. Recheck shortly before departure because stop information can change independently of the roadway notice.

4. Allow flexibility without assuming a specific delay

Construction conditions can change by block and day. Leave enough flexibility for a slower approach, a missed turn, a relocated stop or an extra walk between a temporary boarding point and your destination. The available information does not establish a reliable travel-time buffer, so do not promise yourself or someone else an exact number of extra minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Confirm the destination’s own access instructions

If you are visiting a shop, office, clinic, restaurant or other business, check its current access message as well as Denver’s notice. A business may direct visitors to a particular entrance or parking approach while a nearby curb or driveway is restricted. The city intends to maintain business access, but the practical path to a specific door can still change.

Driving on East Colfax

Approach the bus-only section correctly

Between Broadway and Colorado Boulevard, use the outside traffic lanes. The center lanes are reserved for buses under the September 27, 2026 operating change. Follow lane arrows, temporary signs and flaggers at every intersection. Do not enter, wait in or stop in a bus-only lane merely because an old navigation map places your turn there.

Plan the final turn, not just the corridor

Route planning should end at the destination’s actual driveway or legal curb access. A navigation app may bring you to the correct block but suggest a turn that is temporarily restricted. Read the current segment notice for the approach from your direction, then compare it with signs in the street. If the signed route differs from the app, follow the signs and flaggers.

Parking and curb access

Do not assume that a familiar parking space, loading zone or passenger drop-off area is available. Check the notice for signed parking restrictions and inspect temporary signs when you arrive. If you are carrying equipment, assisting a passenger or making a delivery, confirm where stopping is permitted before entering the block; bus-only lanes and active work areas are not substitute loading areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Businesses and driveways

Denver’s stated goal is to maintain access to all businesses, but access can be routed through a different driveway or side street during a particular operation. Contact the destination if the notice mentions a closure, if the entrance is not visible from the usual approach, or if you need an accessible drop-off. Do not block a work vehicle, temporary barrier or marked emergency route while trying to reach the property.

Riding the RTD 15 or 15L

Expect center-platform boarding in the Broadway-to-Colorado section

In the section affected by the September 27 lane change, 15/15L passengers board from center station platforms. Confirm which side serves your direction and where the safe pedestrian crossing is. A curbside stop shown in an old guide may no longer be the boarding point.

Verify every stop in the current alert

RTD service alerts are the authoritative check for route disruptions, temporary stops, delays and stop closures. Search for your intended stop and direction, then read the full alert rather than relying on a route-map symbol. Note any temporary platform name, walking instruction or restriction on transfers. If you need step-free access, verify the path to the temporary location and ask RTD for current accessibility guidance when the alert does not answer your question.

Build a stop-to-destination plan

After identifying the boarding and alighting locations, map the walk from the platform to the destination entrance. Construction fencing, crossings and driveway changes can make the shortest map line unusable. Use the signed pedestrian route and cross only at the locations indicated on site. For a return trip, check the opposite-direction stop separately; the two directions may not use identical temporary locations.

Walking through the work area

Check the designated pedestrian route

Read the current segment notice for sidewalk closures, crosswalk shifts and accessible detours. Do not assume that a continuous sidewalk exists along every active block. If a route is moved into a temporary walkway, follow its signs and barriers rather than stepping into a traffic lane or work zone.

Allow for crossings and mobility needs

Construction can lengthen the route between a bus platform, a crossing and a front door even when the destination remains open. Identify where you will cross East Colfax and whether the route has a curb ramp, adequate width and a surface suitable for your mobility device. If the notice does not describe an accessible path, contact the project or destination before traveling instead of improvising around barriers.

Travel with children or groups

Keep the group together at marked crossings, obey flaggers and allow extra time to read temporary signs. Do not use a closed sidewalk as a shortcut, and do not wait in a bus-only lane for someone who is catching up.

Cycling along or across Colfax

Do not infer a bike route from the vehicle lanes

The supplied construction information establishes the bus-only center lanes and the outside vehicle lanes, but it does not establish a continuous, current bicycle facility through every segment. Check the current notice for a bike detour, lane shift or temporary closure and follow posted signs. Never ride into a bus-only lane unless signs specifically authorize bicycle use.

Plan the destination end

Look for the signed entrance to the block, a legal place to dismount and walk, and bicycle parking at the destination. Work-zone fencing may remove a familiar approach even when the business is open. If you are carrying a bicycle onto transit, verify the current RTD boarding and vehicle rules separately; construction notices do not replace those rules.

How to answer common Colfax trip questions

Is Colfax Avenue open during construction?

East Colfax is operating during the project, with the city intending to keep one vehicle lane in each direction and maintain business access and 15/15L service. That broad operating plan does not guarantee that a particular block, turn, driveway, curb or stop is open on your date. Confirm the exact location in the current Denver notice and RTD alert.

Which lanes are open?

From Broadway to Colorado Boulevard, the two center lanes are bus-only beginning September 27, 2026. Passenger vehicles use the outside lanes there. Elsewhere on the corridor, lane arrangements depend on the active segment notice and posted signs; do not extend the Broadway-to-Colorado rule to every block without checking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where does the 15 bus stop during construction?

In the Broadway-to-Colorado section, 15/15L riders board from center station platforms. The exact station, direction and any temporary stop elsewhere on the route must be verified in the current RTD service alert. A printed schedule or older map may not show a temporary boarding location.

How do I reach a business on Colfax?

Start with the business’s exact address, then read the Denver notice for the destination segment and your approach. Confirm the legal driveway, entrance, parking or drop-off point with the business if needed. Follow temporary signs and flaggers at the block, even when an app recommends a different turn.

When older notices are misleading

Denver’s April 18, 2025 update described work between Broadway and Garfield and a planned extension to Albion. Those details describe an earlier phase and should not be treated as the current work area. Likewise, the October 2024 notice’s lane, parking and work-hour information is historical. Use the current segment notice and current RTD alert for your travel date instead of copying restrictions from either document.

A day-of-travel checklist

  • Confirm the exact address, cross street, date, arrival time and travel direction.
  • Read the newest Denver notice for the relevant segment.
  • For 15/15L travel, read the current RTD alert for both the outbound and return directions.
  • Record the temporary platform, stop, crossing or driveway instructions you will use.
  • Check parking, loading and accessible-entry information with the destination.
  • Follow posted signs, barriers and flaggers over an old map or navigation suggestion.
  • Keep flexibility for a changed approach, longer walk, relocated stop or construction delay.
  • Recheck alerts immediately before departure if the trip is time-sensitive.

Because work continues through 2027 and conditions are location-specific, the safest plan is not a single permanent detour. It is a repeatable check: current Denver notice, current RTD alert when applicable, destination confirmation, then the signed route on site.
