How to Plan a Safer Bike Route Around Bridge Construction

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the bridge owner or local road authority’s current closure notice, find the signed cycling diversion, and check for updates immediately before you leave. Then compare that route with alternatives for traffic exposure, separation, crossings, surface, width, lighting, accessibility and wayfinding. A longer detour can be the better choice when it avoids high-speed traffic or a difficult crossing. Because no bridge, city or country is specified here, the exact route cannot be verified; never describe an unchecked diversion as safe.

1. Verify the closure before planning your ride

Bridge works often move through phases. A path that was open last week may be closed today, and a temporary crossing can change after weather, deliveries or a new traffic-management phase. Check the authority responsible for the bridge or road rather than relying only on an old map pin or a social-media post.

Find the responsible authority’s notice

  1. Search the bridge or road name together with terms such as “roadworks,” “traffic update,” “cycle diversion” or “closure.”
  2. Open the road authority, bridge owner or project page and confirm the current closure dates, working hours and stated arrangements for cyclists.
  3. Check whether the notice says the work is weather-dependent or subject to change. Transport Scotland’s A9 notice, for example, warns that the work may change and directs travelers to current Traffic Scotland updates: A9 Dualling: Tomatin to Moy – Temporary diversion of National Cycle Network Route 7.
  4. Check again shortly before departure. A notice that describes a forecast end date is not confirmation that the arrangement is still in place.

Confirm that the closure applies to bicycles

“Road closed” can mean different things for motor traffic, pedestrians and bicycles. Read the wording for cycle access, walking access, wheelchairs, cargo bikes and people who need to dismount. If the notice does not explain bicycle access, contact the authority or choose a route that does not depend on guessing.

2. Find the cycling diversion, not just the car detour

Motor-vehicle diversions are often unsuitable for people cycling. Look for a cycling-specific route on the authority’s site, on signs approaching the bridge and on the route in both directions. Walk Wheel Cycle Trust guidance says temporary diversions should be communicated in advance on the ground and through digital channels, including online mapping: Temporary diversions of National Cycle Network routes.

Check signs in both directions

Ride or inspect the approach from each side if possible. A diversion may be obvious leaving the bridge but poorly signed on the return journey. Look for advance warning before the last opportunity to turn away, confirmation signs after each turn and signs that remain visible when construction fencing, parked vehicles or vegetation are present.

Check the online route against the street

Digital maps can lag behind temporary works. Compare the mapped line with the authority’s current notice and recent street-level information. If a map sends you through a closed path, across a construction entrance or onto a road that the signed diversion avoids, treat the map as stale and follow the current authority information instead.

3. Compare the diversion with alternatives

Distance alone is a poor proxy for a usable cycling route. Compare the signed diversion with any reasonable alternative using the same questions at every junction. Walk Wheel Cycle Trust guidance says hazards should be assessed and mitigated when a temporary route cannot meet current design guidance, and notes that avoiding a heavily trafficked, high-speed road may require a longer route. The Texas Department of Transportation similarly advises selecting an alternate bicycle route with equal or lower traffic stress where possible, while recognising that this is design guidance rather than a guarantee for a particular street: Temporary Traffic Control for Bicyclists.

Comparison point Questions to answer before riding
Traffic exposure What are the traffic speed and volume? Are there pinch points, turning vehicles or a section where bicycles share a lane? Is there physical separation from moving traffic?
Crossings and transitions How many roads must you cross? Are sight lines clear? Does the route transition smoothly between a cycle track, a carriageway and a shared path, or does it suddenly funnel you into traffic?
Surface and geometry Is the surface continuous and free of debris? Are there abrupt level changes, steep gradients, narrowings or temporary plates? Will the route remain usable in rain?
Width and vehicle fit Can two people pass safely? Is there room for a cargo bike, trailer, handcycle or other adapted cycle? Do barriers leave enough operating space?
Lighting and visibility Is the route lit at the times you will use it? Can you see construction entrances, pedestrians, barriers and approaching vehicles?
Wayfinding and currentness Are signs present before each decision point and in both directions? Do temporary signs agree with the latest authority notice?
Accessibility Are ramps, kerbs, gates and surfaces usable for the rider and cycle? Does a nominally shared alternative force someone to use stairs or dismount repeatedly?
Time and comfort How much extra time will the detour take, including a busy crossing or a wrong turn? Are you comfortable with the traffic conditions at the time of day you will ride?

These criteria are a decision aid, not a numerical safety score. A route that is shorter but exposes you to fast traffic, complex crossings and poor visibility may be a worse choice than a longer route on calmer streets.

4. Inspect the work-zone details that create risk

Look for sudden loss of separation

Temporary cycle space can end at the exact point where construction vehicles enter or where a lane narrows. Before committing, identify every place where a protected track becomes a painted line, a shared lane or a footway. The Texas work-zone guidance highlights transitions, barriers and the need to prevent equipment or traffic-control devices from obstructing the bicycle route. Do not assume that a cone line creates a comfortable buffer; check where a rider is actually expected to travel.

Examine crossings and junctions

Crossings deserve more attention than the straight sections. Check whether you can see approaching traffic, whether drivers can see you, and whether a barrier directs you toward a crossing without enough waiting space. Walk Wheel Cycle Trust guidance calls for particular consideration at junctions and crossings and discusses temporary toucan signals where a road crossing is required. A route with fewer, simpler crossings is generally easier to follow than one that repeatedly moves between sides of a road.

Check barriers, equipment and stored materials

Construction fencing, signs, plant, spoil and parked vehicles can narrow a route or block sight lines. Philadelphia’s 2024 guidance for temporary bike access routes was created to keep people biking from being diverted into traffic or onto sidewalks during active construction. The city’s announcement describes a local standard, not a rule that applies everywhere, but its purpose is a useful test: a temporary arrangement should not solve a closure by placing riders in an unprotected traffic lane or requiring them to use a pedestrian sidewalk. Read the announcement at City Releases New Guidelines for Temporary Bike Access Routes in Construction Areas.

Assess the surface and drainage

Loose gravel, mud, standing water, ridges and abrupt ramps can be more consequential on a bicycle than on foot. Slow down before a temporary surface change and check whether drainage leaves a slippery channel across the route. If the usable width disappears around a puddle or obstruction, the route may effectively require a merge into traffic.

5. Plan for your bicycle and the people riding with you

A diversion that works for a standard bicycle may not work for every rider. Consider the complete combination of bicycle, load and rider rather than the nominal path width.

  • Cargo bikes and trailers: check gates, bollards, barriers and turning space before setting out.
  • Adapted cycles: verify width, ramp gradients and whether a surface change can be crossed without losing stability.
  • Children or less-confident riders: avoid routes that demand fast merges, multiple lane changes or hurried crossings.
  • Night riding: check lighting along the entire detour, not only at the bridge. Construction fencing can make an otherwise lit route feel enclosed and reduce visibility.
  • Walking or wheeling alternatives: confirm that a person who needs to dismount can still pass barriers and reach the next section without stairs or an inaccessible kerb.

Where the authority gives no usable arrangement for your cycle, choose another route or ask for clarification rather than improvising through the work site.

6. Allow extra time and build a fallback

Temporary routes are unfamiliar, and a diversion can add waiting time at crossings, detours around barriers and delays caused by construction traffic. Transport Scotland’s A9 project notice explicitly advises allowing extra journey time. Add a margin large enough that you do not feel pressured to cross during a short gap or take a prohibited shortcut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save the authority notice and the map of the chosen route before leaving.
  2. Identify one fallback turn before the bridge and one after it, so you can leave the diversion if a section is blocked.
  3. Carry enough charge or battery capacity for the longer distance if you use an electric bicycle.
  4. Tell anyone expecting you that the route and arrival time may change.

If you reach a barrier, queue or crossing that does not match the notice, stop in a safe place away from moving traffic. Re-check the latest update or turn back to your fallback route; do not squeeze through a gap because you have already invested time in the detour.

7. Apply the cycling rules in your jurisdiction

Legal requirements differ by country and by the type of crossing. In the UK, the Department for Transport’s Highway Code rules 59 to 82 include specific advice for cyclists at junctions and crossings. Rule 73 says a rider who does not feel safe proceeding through a junction as a vehicle may prefer to dismount and use the pedestrian route. Rules 81 and 82 distinguish crossings where cyclists must dismount from toucan crossings where cycling is permitted. Follow the signs and rules of the jurisdiction where you are riding; do not transfer UK crossing rules to another country.

For designers and authorities working in England, Cycle infrastructure design (LTN 1/20) is the Department for Transport’s published design guidance. Its existence does not make every temporary diversion compliant, so riders should still inspect the actual arrangement and report hazards to the responsible authority.

8. Use a project example correctly

Transport Scotland’s 2025 notice about the A9 Dualling: Tomatin to Moy project illustrates how a bridge-area diversion can combine several controls. The described temporary diversion of National Cycle Network Route 7 near Tomatin and Moy is approximately 3.5 km long. About 500 m of that route travels adjacent to road traffic. The notice describes a temporary roundabout crossing, a reduced speed limit, enhanced cycle markings, lighting, barriers and a temporary bridge. It also states that the diversion is inspected weekly and is expected to remain until the dualling becomes operational in spring 2028.

Detail in the A9/NCN7 notice How to interpret it
Approximately 3.5 km The length of that project’s described temporary diversion, not a recommended distance for other bridge works.
Around 500 m adjacent to road traffic A project-specific section requiring riders to assess traffic speed, separation, sight lines and comfort.
Weekly inspections The inspection frequency stated for that diversion; other projects may use a different schedule.
Expected until spring 2028 A forecast in the 2025 notice, not proof that the arrangement remains current.

Use this example to recognise possible controls, not to assume that another bridge has the same protection. No general statistic establishes a universally safer diversion distance or risk level.

9. Decide when not to continue

Choose another route when the conditions you encounter differ materially from the notice or when the route demands a manoeuvre you cannot make comfortably. Warning signs include:

  • a sudden merge into a fast or dense traffic stream;
  • a crossing with blocked sight lines or no usable waiting space;
  • a path narrowed by barriers, equipment, mud or standing water;
  • missing or contradictory signs at a decision point;
  • lighting that leaves construction entrances or crossings unseeable;
  • a gate, ramp or barrier that your bicycle cannot pass; and
  • pressure to ride on a sidewalk or through a closed work area.

Stop away from traffic, dismount where the local rules and layout allow it, and reroute. A detour is an access arrangement, not a promise that every rider will find it suitable.

10. Report problems so the route can be corrected

Record the bridge, approach direction, date and time, exact location and the problem you found. Describe the effect in practical terms—for example, “the barrier leaves no space for a trailer” or “the sign points toward a closed path”—and send it to the road authority or project contact shown on the notice. Include a photograph only when it can be taken without entering the work zone or standing in traffic. If the route is part of a signed cycle network, also notify the organisation responsible for that network.

Report changes even when you found your own workaround. The next rider may not know the area, may be traveling at night or may be using a wider or adapted cycle. Current, visible information is part of the diversion itself.

A repeatable pre-ride checklist

  • Current closure notice opened and checked on the day of travel.
  • Cycling-specific diversion identified, with signs checked in both directions.
  • Online map compared against the authority’s current information.
  • Traffic exposure, separation, crossings, transitions, surface, width and lighting assessed.
  • Route checked for cargo bikes, trailers, adapted cycles or riders who need to dismount.
  • Extra time and a fallback route planned.
  • Local crossing and dismount rules understood.
  • Safe stopping point identified if the on-site arrangement differs from the notice.
