Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with the transportation agency that owns the closed bridge or road, then confirm the agency’s detour against live 511 conditions and your vehicle’s weight, height and road restrictions. A navigation app can suggest a path, but only current agency information can establish whether the bridge is open, which detour is intended and whether every road on the route is suitable. Recheck immediately before departure and use a safe, hands-free way to receive updates.
Why the official closure notice comes first
A bridge closure is a traffic-control decision, not simply a missing segment on a digital map. The road authority may have installed a signed detour, imposed a temporary weight limit, restricted a direction of travel or closed connecting roads that a general routing service has not yet received. Find the agency responsible for the bridge and use its closure announcement as the starting point.

Responsibility normally follows the road classification. An interstate, U.S. highway or state route is generally handled by a state transportation department; a city street, county road or local bridge may be handled by a municipality or county. If the bridge is on a private facility or a construction access road, use the owner’s notice and confirm how it connects to public roads. Do not assume that an agency covering one road also controls every road in a proposed detour.
Because closure data changes, record the notice date and the planned departure time. A page that was accurate yesterday is not proof that the same detour is open today.

Step 1: Identify the bridge, road and jurisdiction
Collect the location details
Write down the bridge name or number, the road it carries, the nearest town or intersection, and the direction you need to travel. If you have only a map pin, identify the road name and route number shown at that point. Note whether the closure affects one lane, one direction or the entire bridge. These details prevent you from searching for a similarly named bridge in another county.
Find the responsible authority
Search the official transportation department, county highway department or city public-works site for the road and location. Look for pages labeled “traffic alerts,” “restrictions,” “closures,” “emergency information” or “detours.” The Indiana Department of Transportation’s Restrictions/Closings page illustrates the type of official listing to seek. If the agency publishes a project page, subscribe to its alert option when available.
Look for an agency-posted detour map
A closure notice may include a map, signed-route description, truck detour or a list of roads to use. Rhode Island’s Department of Transportation, for example, publishes Detour & Construction Maps for named projects and bridge closures. Treat that map as the controlling recommendation for the affected facility, while still checking live conditions and vehicle restrictions on every connecting road.
Step 2: Read the closure notice for conditions that change your route
Before opening a route planner, extract the operational facts from the notice:
- Effective start time and any announced reopening estimate.
- Whether the bridge is closed to all traffic, a direction, a lane, pedestrians or specific vehicle classes.
- The agency’s signed detour route and any roads explicitly excluded.
- Temporary weight, height, width, axle or hazardous-material restrictions.
- Nearby construction phases, ramp closures, event controls or seasonal restrictions.
- The agency contact or operations center to call when a restriction is unclear.
Do not convert an estimated reopening time into a promise. A damaged bridge, inspection finding or weather event can extend a closure. If the notice says “until further notice,” plan on the detour for the entire trip rather than gambling on a last-minute opening.
Step 3: Build a route in the local 511 service
Enter the complete trip
Use the state or regional traveler-information service serving the closure area. Alaska 511’s map, for example, lets a user enter start and end points and generate a route. Enter the actual loading yard, jobsite entrance or delivery address—not merely the town—so the final local-road segment is included. Save the route or note its major turns in case cellular service fails.

Turn on every relevant layer
Enable layers for closures, incidents, construction, cameras, weather or road conditions, and travel times when the service provides them. The Bay Area 511 FAQ explains that its live map can show congestion, incidents, construction, events and closures; it also advises checking before leaving and using voice service or pulling over before checking a smartphone. Capabilities differ by jurisdiction, so a missing layer does not prove that no restriction exists.
Use the result as a candidate, not an approval
A route generated by 511 or another navigator is a lead to investigate. Compare its roads and turns with the agency-posted detour. If they conflict, follow the signed and agency-published closure instructions and contact the road authority for clarification. A general routing engine may have stale closure data, may not know a temporary weight limit, or may select a city street that the detour notice never authorized.
Step 4: Compare available alternatives deliberately
When two or more routes appear open, compare them against the same criteria instead of selecting the shortest line. The following worksheet keeps the decision tied to evidence:
| Decision factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed open status | Agency notice, 511 closure layer, signs or camera view where available | A route that is merely drawn on a map may still be closed. |
| Agency-posted detour | Whether the road authority specifically directs traffic there | Posted routes reflect local traffic control and access decisions. |
| Vehicle eligibility | Weight, axle, height, width, hazardous-material and road-class restrictions | A passenger-car route may be illegal or physically impossible for a work vehicle. |
| Travel time and congestion | Current 511 conditions, cameras and incident reports | A longer distance can be faster if the short option is congested or metered. |
| Additional exposure | Weather, construction, incidents, steep grades and other bridges | One closure can push traffic toward another vulnerable point. |
| Local-road approval | Whether city or county streets require separate authorization | State route data may not cover the final miles of a detour. |
Document the route you selected, the time you checked it and the source for each restriction. For a crew or delivery, share that record with the driver and site contact so everyone is working from the same plan.
Step 5: Prove the route fits the vehicle
Gather the vehicle’s controlling dimensions
Before approving a detour, record the loaded vehicle’s gross weight, axle weights, height, width, length, trailer configuration and any special load characteristics. Include equipment that changes the profile, such as a raised dump body, excavator boom, crane attachment or material extending beyond the bed. The relevant question is whether the loaded combination can legally and physically use each road and bridge, not whether the empty tractor or pickup can.

The Federal Highway Administration warns that routing suggestions can place trucks on roads where their vehicle type is not allowed and may lack accurate bridge weight or clearance information. Its 2022 report, Implementing Solutions for Emergency Routing, states: “If there is an emergency where a bridge is damaged, lowering weight allowed across a bridge, the truck driver would be required to rely on the updated 511 map and not the route provided by the API.” Read the full report at https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/fhwahop22030/fhwahop22030.pdf.

Use the bridge inventory, restriction bulletin or permit office for the jurisdiction governing each crossing. Do not infer a bridge’s capacity from its appearance, a road’s posted speed or a route planner’s willingness to draw a line across it.
Check direction-specific restrictions
Clearance and restriction data can differ by direction. INDOT notes that its bridge-clearance map covers interstates, U.S. highways and state routes, and that a bridge’s clearance may differ for opposing travel directions. A map that shows a legal eastbound movement does not automatically validate westbound travel. Confirm the direction, lane and approach used by your route.
Escalate uncertainty for large or commercial vehicles
If a posted limit is missing, contradictory or lower than your loaded weight or height, stop the planning process and contact the agency responsible for that road or bridge. Ask for the restriction in writing when possible and provide the vehicle dimensions, route, travel date and direction. Do not rely on a driver’s judgment at a barricade or attempt to bypass a weight or height sign.
Step 6: Inspect the entire route, including local roads
A detour is a chain of road segments, not a single highlighted line. Check the departure street, every connector, each bridge and the final approach to the destination. INDOT’s clearance information is an example of state-level coverage; it warns that routes using city streets or county roads require municipality approval. That limitation is important when a state map appears clear but the last several miles run through local streets.
Verify the final approach
Construction sites often have temporary entrances, one-way haul roads, low overhead utilities, soft shoulders or gates that are not represented in public routing data. Confirm the permitted entrance with the site superintendent or owner, then make sure the public road leading to it accommodates the vehicle. If a route requires backing, a tight turn or crossing a temporary surface, arrange a spotter and a safe staging point before the trip.
Watch for secondary closures
Scan the 511 incident and construction layers for every leg, not only the bridge that triggered the search. A detour can encounter a crash, a work-zone shift, a flooded low point, a seasonal pass restriction or another bridge with a lower limit. Cameras can help confirm queues and lane availability, but a camera view is not a substitute for a posted restriction.

Step 7: Recheck close to departure and plan for change
Check the agency notice and live traveler-information map shortly before the vehicle leaves. The exact update interval varies by jurisdiction; FHWA notes that state 511 data practices are not uniform. A morning check may not cover an afternoon storm, a new crash or a restriction imposed after an inspection.

The navigator sends you through the closed bridge
Stop in a safe location and check the official closure notice and 511 closure layer. Mark the bridge as avoided only after you have identified the agency’s detour; otherwise the application may select another unsuitable local crossing. If signs and digital information disagree, obey the on-site traffic control and contact the road authority when practical.
The 511 route differs from the posted detour
Use the posted detour as the baseline and investigate each difference. A routing service may optimize travel time while the agency has reserved a road for specific traffic, excluded trucks or coordinated signals for a signed path. Ask the agency whether the alternate is open to your vehicle and direction before replacing the official route.

The route is open but conditions deteriorate
If weather, flooding, visibility, congestion or a new incident makes the detour unsafe, pull over safely and recheck official updates. Do not continue because the route was valid at departure. Ask dispatch or the site contact to adjust the delivery window rather than pressuring a driver to take an unverified shortcut.
There is no agency-posted detour
Use the closure notice to identify the boundary of the closure, then build a candidate route in the applicable 511 service. Validate every segment with the agency’s restriction information and local authorities. If the closure is an emergency or the road ownership is unclear, call the transportation agency or local public-works office before sending a large vehicle.
Construction and commercial-trip planning
Separate vehicle classes in the dispatch plan
A passenger vehicle, service van, concrete truck, lowboy trailer and oversize load may require different detours. Build a route for the largest or most restricted vehicle rather than assuming the crew car’s route will work for the delivery. Give each driver the loaded dimensions and the exact route version checked for that vehicle.

Coordinate with the jobsite
Tell the site contact which bridge is closed, which entrance the driver will use and what time conditions were checked. Confirm that the entrance is open during the delivery window and that there is room to queue without blocking the detour. If the agency changes the route, update the site’s traffic-control plan and notify subcontractors who may arrive from different directions.
Allow operational time, not just map time
Include time for inspection stops, a slower work-zone speed, a weigh or permit check, staging and a possible second route check. A route that looks efficient for a car may create a costly delay when a truck must wait for an escort, use a controlled entrance or turn around at a restriction.
A repeatable pre-departure checklist
- Identify the bridge, road number, direction and controlling jurisdiction.
- Read the current official closure notice and save its date, detour map and contact information.
- Enter the full origin and destination in the applicable state or regional 511 service.
- Enable closure, incident, construction, weather, camera and travel-time layers that are available.
- Compare the generated route with the agency-posted detour and investigate every difference.
- Record the loaded vehicle’s weight, axle arrangement, height, width, length and special-load limits.
- Check weight, height, width and directional restrictions for every bridge and road segment.
- Obtain municipality approval or confirmation for city streets and county roads when required.
- Check the final jobsite entrance, turning space, temporary controls and delivery window.
- Recheck conditions immediately before departure and establish safe points for later updates.
- Share the route version and agency contacts with the driver, dispatcher and site supervisor.
What this method can and cannot establish
This process works as a repeatable framework, but 511 services and map coverage vary by jurisdiction. The examples above are U.S. services: Alaska 511 demonstrates route creation and condition layers, Bay Area 511 documents live-map functions and safe phone use, INDOT explains the limits of state bridge-clearance coverage, FHWA documents emergency-routing data risks, and RIDOT shows how an agency may publish project-specific detour maps. None of those examples validates a detour in an unspecified location.
Without the bridge location, origin, destination, vehicle configuration and travel time, no specific alternate route can be declared open or legal. Closure status, weather, work zones and bridge restrictions are volatile. The responsible agency’s current notice, live traveler-information service and on-site signs remain the deciding sources for the trip you are about to make.
