How to Plan a Route Around Road Construction and Temporary Diversions in the UK

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the road authority responsible for the road, not your navigation app. Check official closure and roadworks information for the date and time of travel, read the signed diversion and vehicle restrictions, choose an alternative that is genuinely suitable, and leave a time buffer. Use live navigation as a supplement. Once you reach temporary traffic management, follow the signs, signals, barriers and lawful instructions rather than taking an apparently shorter shortcut.

1. Identify who controls the road

Roadworks information is only useful when it covers the road you are actually using. Establish the responsible highway authority before comparing routes.

Major roads in England

GOV.UK brings together links to National Highways live traffic information, a database of current and planned major-road roadworks, and longer-term project information. Use those sources to check incidents, closures, lane restrictions and planned works on motorways and other major roads in England.

Major roads in Scotland and Wales

For major roads in Scotland, check Traffic Scotland. For major roads in Wales, check Traffic Wales. These national services are the appropriate starting points for their respective trunk-road networks.

Local roads anywhere in Great Britain

A national major-road service does not replace local information. Street works, bridge repairs, traffic orders and temporary closures on local streets are normally managed by the relevant local highway authority. Identify the council or other authority responsible for the road and check its roadworks, disruption or travel-information pages.

Information can change between planning and departure. Recheck the official source close to leaving, particularly after severe weather, an incident or a change to the works timetable.

2. Check the restriction before you choose a route

A notice that says “roadworks” may mean anything from a single lane under traffic lights to a full closure with a signed diversion. Read the details rather than relying on a map pin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the exact location

Record the affected road, junction, direction of travel and any named section, bridge or tunnel. A closure may apply in one direction only, or begin and end at particular junctions.

Check the timing

Note the start and expected finish dates, daily working hours and whether the restriction is continuous. Planned works can be extended, and an incident can turn a normally open route into a temporary closure.

Look for the authority’s diversion and access rules

Read whether a signed diversion is provided, whether access to properties is retained, and whether there are limits for width, height, weight, hazardous loads or particular vehicle classes. A route that works for a car may be unsuitable for a van, coach, caravan, abnormal load or vehicle towing a trailer.

Use advance signs as planning information

The Department for Transport explains that advance temporary roadworks signs can identify future works where delays or closures are expected. They give drivers time to allow for delay, select another route or make a different travel arrangement. Treat an advance sign as an early warning, not as permission to ignore a later restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Build an alternative before you leave

Do not wait until you are at the closure to decide what to do. Use this sequence for each journey affected by construction.

  1. Check the official source for the road and travel period. Use National Highways and the GOV.UK-linked major-road information for an affected major road in England, Traffic Scotland or Traffic Wales for the corresponding national network, and the relevant local highway authority for local roads.
  2. Read the complete restriction. Write down the location, direction, operating hours, closure dates, named diversion and any access or vehicle constraints.
  3. List at least one realistic alternative. Include the authority’s signed route where one is published and another option only if it is legal, open and suitable for your vehicle and destination.
  4. Compare the routes on more than the app’s displayed time. Check whether each route avoids the confirmed closure, how delay may develop, whether the road can accommodate your vehicle, whether it preserves access to the destination and local properties, and whether it follows the responsible authority’s diversion.
  5. Add a time buffer. Allow for queues at approaches, reduced speeds through the works, unfamiliar junctions and a missed turn. The official information may describe expected delay without guaranteeing a journey time.
  6. Set navigation before moving. Enter the destination while parked, review the first diversion decision and put the device where it can be seen without blocking the road view.
  7. Recheck immediately before departure. A new collision, an earlier closure or a change in traffic management can invalidate yesterday’s plan.

4. Compare routes with a decision table

When several routes appear possible, evaluate them against the same criteria. This prevents a short-term app estimate from outweighing a safety or access problem.

Route option What to verify When it may be appropriate Typical risk to reject
Signed authority diversion It is displayed for your direction of travel and your vehicle is within the stated limits. The default choice when a road authority has published and signed it. Assuming every signed route has the same capacity for every vehicle; check restrictions and local access.
Navigation-app alternative The road is confirmed open by an official source, is legally accessible, and can handle your vehicle. As a supplement when it does not conflict with temporary signs or an authority instruction. Following a shortcut into a narrow residential road, a weight restriction, a closed lane or an emergency-access route.
Familiar secondary route Current works, restrictions, junction capacity and destination access. When official information confirms it is open and it offers a dependable alternative. Remembering its normal conditions while overlooking new roadworks or unsuitable geometry.
Delay or postpone the trip Whether the journey is essential and whether the restriction is expected to end later. When no route is suitable, the vehicle cannot use the diversion, or the buffer would be unacceptable. Leaving without a plan and stopping in an unsafe place when the closure is reached.

5. Treat live navigation as a supplement

Google Maps Help describes traffic information that can include construction delays, incident alerts and alternative route choices. Availability of individual features can vary by location, device and service conditions, so an app should not be treated as a complete record of every restriction.

Why the fastest displayed route may be wrong for your journey

A navigation service optimises from the data it has. It may not know the reason an authority selected a particular diversion, the capacity of a local road, the needs of emergency services or the dimensions of your vehicle. It can also propose a road that is technically open but unsuitable for the volume of diverted traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An official National Highways scheme notice for the A3 at Hindhead illustrates this issue: drivers were asked to resist a sat-nav alternative to the planned diversion because an informal shortcut could obstruct local roads and emergency access or be unsuitable for larger vehicles. That is scheme-specific advice, not a universal claim that every signed diversion is faster or better. It demonstrates why the authority’s route and local constraints deserve priority over a momentary app estimate.

When the app reroutes you

Compare the proposed change with the official restriction. If it conflicts with a closure, a temporary sign, a weight or width limit, or the signed diversion, keep following the lawful route indicated at the site. If you need to reassess, pull over somewhere safe before changing the destination or route.

6. Prepare the vehicle and driver

Hands-free navigation in the UK

Do not hold and use a phone or sat-nav while driving. A dashboard holder or windscreen mount can provide hands-free access, but it must not block your view and you must remain in control of the vehicle. Program the route, read instructions and make changes before setting off or while safely parked. Do not handle the device in traffic or while waiting at lights.

Power for longer trips

Navigation uses a phone’s battery. Google Maps Help recommends a vehicle power adaptor, particularly for journeys longer than 30 minutes. Connect it before the battery becomes low, and position the cable so it cannot interfere with steering, pedals or other controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check physical suitability

Before accepting an alternative, check the vehicle’s height, width, weight, turning needs and towing status against the restrictions in the notice and on the road. Consider whether the route has low bridges, narrow lanes, weak bridges, steep gradients or a prohibition on particular loads. If you carry equipment or materials for a construction job, include the loaded dimensions and weight rather than the empty vehicle’s figures.

7. Read and obey temporary traffic management

At the approach to the works, stop treating the route as a normal road. The Department for Transport says temporary signs may describe the work location, duration, lane changes, restrictions, route deviations and temporary controls.

Follow the indicated diversion

Use the direction shown by temporary signs and lane markings. A diversion may take you away from the road that appears geographically direct because it has been selected for capacity, turning space, bridge limits, local access or emergency response.

Obey signals and controlled movement

Temporary traffic management can include shuttle working, temporary traffic lights, stop-and-go control and convoy arrangements. Wait for the displayed signal or authorised instruction, maintain the indicated lane and leave the work area clear for vehicles moving in the opposite direction.

Never bypass barriers or signs

Do not drive through a barrier, move cones, enter a closed lane or use a residential street simply to evade an official diversion. A shorter route on a phone is not evidence that it is authorised, safe or suitable. Such a move can put workers, residents and emergency responders at risk and may breach a restriction.

Handle an apparent contradiction safely

If a navigation instruction conflicts with a temporary sign, follow the sign or lawful instruction at the road. Continue to a safe stopping place before checking the official information or updating the route. Never stop in a live lane or at the mouth of a closure to study the map.

8. Plan for access, not just passage

A route can avoid the closure and still fail to get you to the property, site entrance or delivery point. Check the final approach as carefully as the main diversion.

  • Confirm that the destination remains accessible during the works and note any local access-only arrangement.
  • Check whether a temporary one-way system changes the approach to a site, car park or loading area.
  • Allow for turning and waiting space if the destination is served by a large vehicle.
  • Keep emergency access clear and do not queue across junctions or estate entrances.
  • Tell the person receiving you about a changed arrival route and a realistic arrival window.

The A3 Hindhead example shows why this matters: an apparently convenient local-road shortcut can consume capacity needed by residents and emergency services even when it looks open on a map.

9. What to do when conditions change en route

The closure begins earlier than expected

Slow down, read the advance signs and join the signed diversion at the instructed point. If the route is unsuitable for your vehicle, continue only to a safe place where you can stop and contact the road authority or your destination for an alternative arrangement.

The diversion is congested

Stay on the indicated route unless an authorised change is signed. Add the delay to your arrival estimate, keep junctions clear and avoid creating a second blockage by turning into a street that was not designed for diverted traffic.

Your app proposes a shortcut

Do not accept it automatically. Check it against the signs, official closure information and vehicle restrictions. If you cannot verify it safely, keep following the temporary route.

You miss a diversion turn

Continue to a safe location rather than reversing, making a sudden turn or stopping on the carriageway. Recalculate only when parked, and select a route that rejoins the authorised diversion without entering a closed section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need urgent assistance

Keep emergency access routes unobstructed. Use the appropriate emergency or road-authority contact from a safe location, giving the road, direction, nearest junction and visible works information.

10. A repeatable checklist for construction-affected journeys

  • Responsible authority identified for every affected road.
  • Official information checked for the actual date, time and direction.
  • Closure location, operating hours, restrictions and named diversion recorded.
  • Vehicle height, width, weight, towing and load requirements checked.
  • Destination access and final approach confirmed.
  • Signed diversion compared with any app alternative on suitability, access and likely delay.
  • Time buffer added for queues and unfamiliar traffic management.
  • Navigation programmed while parked and mounted without obstructing the view.
  • Power adaptor available for longer phone-navigation use.
  • Official information rechecked immediately before departure.
  • Plan made to follow temporary signs, signals, barriers and lawful instructions.

Road construction plans and traffic conditions are temporary by definition. A reliable plan therefore has two parts: authoritative information before departure and disciplined decisions at the work site. Use the authority’s information to choose the route, use navigation to support—not replace—that plan, and allow enough time to follow the diversion without pressure.
