For a U.S. trip, start with the agency responsible for the road. Check that state or local transportation agency’s 511 service, road-condition map, project page or closure notice before you leave. Confirm the closure’s dates and hours, the exact road or lanes affected, and the agency’s designated detour. Then compare that detour with feasible alternatives and departure times, recheck the latest status shortly before departure, and follow the signs and traffic controls you encounter in the work zone. A navigation app can add useful traffic information, but it should not be treated as proof that every restriction is listed or current.
What to do first
Construction information is route- and date-specific. Without a highway, origin, destination and travel date, nobody can accurately name a current closure or detour for your trip. The reliable method is to combine the road agency’s latest notice with a practical route comparison.

- Identify the state, county or city agency that manages the highway.
- Open its 511 phone service, website, mobile app, road-condition map, project page or official social-media account, depending on what that agency provides.
- Read the notice for the affected road segment, closure type, dates, hours and signed detour.
- Compare the official detour with other feasible routes and possible departure times.
- Check again just before leaving and monitor updates during the trip.
- At the work zone, obey temporary signs, flaggers, lane-control devices and the signed detour even if an earlier app instruction differs.
These steps follow the Federal Highway Administration’s guidance on traveler-information systems, advance work-zone notices, detour signing and real-time updates. See FHWA’s work-zone impacts management guidance and its Traffic Management Center guidance.

State departments of transportation and local road agencies manage the closures, lane shifts and construction schedules on their corridors. FHWA describes agency traveler-information channels that can include 511 telephone services, websites, mobile apps and social media. The mix of channels and the level of detail vary by location, so look for the agency that actually controls your road rather than relying on one nationwide feed.

Find the right agency
- For an interstate or state route, begin with the state DOT’s official website and 511 service, if available.
- For a county road, municipal street or bridge, check the county or city transportation department.
- If your route crosses several states, check each state’s system for the portion you will drive.
- For a project near a city boundary, check both the state and local agency; responsibility and notices can differ by segment.
Use the agency’s own domain and current notice. FHWA’s material explains how agencies distribute work-zone information, but it is not a live, state-by-state closure list.
Read the closure notice for the details that change your plan
A headline such as “construction on Highway 20” is not enough. Extract the operational details before choosing a route.
Closure type
- Full road closure: Traffic cannot use the affected segment, so your route must leave the corridor before the closure and rejoin it after the signed detour or another viable bypass.
- Lane closure: The highway remains open, but capacity is reduced. A delay may be more appropriate than a long diversion, depending on the hours and traffic demand.
- Other restriction: A notice may limit a direction, vehicle movement or access to a ramp, shoulder or intersection. Read the wording rather than assuming the entire highway is closed.
Dates and hours
Record the start and end dates, daily hours, overnight periods and any weekday or weekend exceptions. A closure that is inactive when you leave may become active later in the day. FHWA describes advance notices and signs that communicate closure dates and work-zone conditions; use those dates as the basis for your departure decision, then verify that they have not changed.
Exact location and direction
Note the route number, direction of travel, interchange, mile marker, bridge or named project limits. “Eastbound only” and “both directions” produce very different plans. A ramp closure can affect a trip even when the mainline remains open.
Official detour
Look for the agency-designated detour, not just a generic alternate shown by a map. FHWA explains that detour signs are intended to direct motorists onto the detour, through it and back to the original route. If the notice includes a map or turn-by-turn sequence, save it or write down the key junctions before driving.

Build a primary route and a backup
Once you know the closure window and affected segment, compare options that actually avoid both. An attractive-looking alternate is not useful if it rejoins the closed section, enters during the restricted hours or depends on an access ramp that is also closed.
Use the signed detour as the baseline
The designated detour reflects the agency’s intended traffic-management plan and is usually the easiest route to follow in the field because temporary signs guide drivers through it. Treat it as your primary option unless the current notice or conditions make another feasible route better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEvaluate a different alternate
A separate route may make sense when it avoids a long queue, suits your vehicle or destination, or remains open outside the project’s control area. Confirm that it has usable roads, legal access and enough capacity for your trip. FHWA notes that the value of advance diversion depends on available alternate routes; an alternate is not automatically faster simply because it avoids the construction site.
Consider changing the departure time
If the closure operates only during certain hours, leaving earlier or later may preserve the original route. Compare the new departure time with the notice’s active window, expected traffic and any restrictions at your destination. Do not assume that an overnight closure ends exactly when work crews leave; use the agency’s stated hours and latest update.
Compare routes and departure times systematically
When two or more options remain viable, use the same criteria for each. The available sources support comparing closure avoidance, detour feasibility and information freshness; they do not establish a universal ranking method for travel-time estimates from commercial navigation apps.

| Comparison question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Does it avoid the restriction? | The route stays clear of the affected segment and the active closure hours. | A route that intersects the work zone can fail even if its estimated time looks short. |
| Is it the agency detour? | Whether it follows the signed or published detour, or whether it is a separately verified alternate. | The official detour is designed to be signed through the work area; an unmarked alternate requires more independent checking. |
| How current is the information? | Timestamp, update date, current 511 report, project notice and real-time alerts. | Schedules and restrictions can change after you planned the trip. |
| What happens if conditions change? | Where you can safely divert before reaching the closure. | A route with an early decision point is easier to recover if the status changes. |
Write down the primary route, backup route, closure hours and the junction where you would switch. This prevents making a complicated decision while approaching a work zone.

FHWA documents agencies sharing work-zone information with navigation applications and describes real-time information as useful for current delays and restrictions. That does not establish that every app receives every closure, displays the correct hours or updates at the same time as the road agency. Coverage and timing can vary by location.
- Use the agency notice to establish whether the road is closed, which lanes are affected and when.
- Use a navigation app to see current traffic, estimate alternatives and locate a safe decision point.
- Compare the app’s route with the official detour rather than accepting an unexplained shortcut.
- If the app conflicts with a temporary sign, obey the sign and traffic-control personnel.
FHWA’s 2024 discussion of geofencing describes ways agencies can collect and share location-based work-zone information, but it does not guarantee universal app completeness. See FHWA’s geofencing publication for that technology context.
Recheck immediately before departure
Construction schedules can move, lanes can reopen or a planned closure can be extended. FHWA identifies keeping work-zone information accurate and current as an agency challenge and describes real-time channels for reporting changing conditions. Make a final check close to departure, not only when you first book or plan the trip.
Final-check routine
- Open the responsible agency’s latest road-condition report or project notice.
- Confirm that the closure dates, hours, direction and affected segment still match your plan.
- Check the current delay or incident report for the route and the first part of the detour.
- Save the current detour map or note the first several turns before driving.
- Tell anyone coordinating your arrival which route and departure window you selected.
If the notice has no current timestamp or the agency reports uncertainty, plan for the restriction rather than assuming it has ended. A later reopening is a bonus; it should not be the basis of your route.

Drive the work zone and detour as signed
Temporary signs and traffic-control devices are integral to work-zone management. Advance signs may announce the closure, lane shift or detour; additional signs guide you through the alternate route and back to the original road. Slow down enough to read the next instruction, maintain the required lane and allow for sudden queues.
- Follow posted detour arrows, lane-control devices and flaggers.
- Do not bypass a barricade or enter a lane marked closed.
- Do not let an earlier app instruction override a current temporary sign.
- Expect the physical arrangement to differ from an ordinary map while work is active.
- If you miss a turn, continue to a safe place to reassess rather than making a sudden maneuver in the work zone.
Safety is not a secondary concern. In a November 5, 2024 announcement about updated federal work-zone rules, FHWA stated that four out of five work-zone fatalities involved drivers or passengers. The statistic refers to work-zone fatalities in the scope of that announcement, not to all traffic crashes or a universal annual rate. The announcement quotes Acting Federal Highway Administrator Kristin White: “With USDOT’s commitment to Vision Zero – a future where no one dies on our roads – it’s critical that we keep people safe in work zones, including travelers and those constructing our roads.” Read the announcement at FHWA’s newsroom.

The agency page and navigation app disagree
Use the agency’s current closure notice for the restriction itself and treat the app as supplementary traffic information. Check the notice date, direction and exact limits. Once you are on the road, follow the temporary signs and traffic controllers.
The closure starts after you reach the area
Compare your expected arrival with the published active hours, including any daily or overnight schedule. If arrival could overlap the window, choose the detour or a departure time that clearly avoids it rather than relying on an optimistic estimate.

The official detour is congested
Check current agency or traffic-center updates, then compare a verified alternate that avoids the same restriction. Do not leave the signed route merely because a map displays a shorter line; confirm that the alternate is open and reconnects with your trip.

You discover a closure with no advance notice
Follow the signs to the designated detour and move to a safe location before consulting current information. If the agency provides a live 511 report or traffic map, use it to decide whether to remain on the detour or take a documented alternate.
The closure is on a multi-state trip
Repeat the same process for each state or local jurisdiction. A route can be clear in one state and restricted immediately after a border crossing, so one agency’s notice cannot represent the entire journey.
Your vehicle has special needs
Verify that an alternate accepts your vehicle’s size, weight and clearance requirements before choosing it. A route that works for a passenger car may not be suitable for a larger vehicle, and a posted detour is preferable when the agency has designed it for the project.
Prepare a simple closure worksheet
For a complex trip, keep these fields in one note so the information can be checked quickly:
- Road agency and official contact or 511 channel
- Route number, direction and exact affected segment
- Closure type: full closure, lane closure or other restriction
- Start date, end date and daily hours
- Published detour and first safe decision point
- Primary route and independently checked backup
- Time of the latest agency update
- Planned departure and expected arrival at the work zone
- Any vehicle, accessibility or cargo constraint
The worksheet is not a substitute for live information. Its purpose is to make changes visible: if the agency updates one field, you can immediately see whether the route or departure time must change.
What you do not need to buy
The central information comes from public transportation-agency channels: 511 services, agency websites and apps, social-media updates, traffic-center information and roadside signs. The available guidance does not establish that a dedicated GPS unit, paper atlas, phone mount or roadside kit is necessary for planning around a closure. Use the devices and connectivity you already have, and prioritize the current official notice.
Know the limits of general federal guidance
FHWA’s work-zone materials explain national principles for advance notice, detour signing, traffic-management centers and information sharing. They do not provide a live closure schedule for your road and may include historical technical examples. The federal work-zone regulation and policy material concerns Federal-aid highway projects and is context rather than individualized travel advice; see FHWA’s work-zone regulation and policy page. For an actual departure decision, the responsible road agency’s current notice controls.
Quick checklist before you leave
- Have I identified the agency responsible for every affected road segment?
- Did I confirm the closure type, direction, location, dates and hours?
- Did I record the agency’s designated detour?
- Did I check whether my route reaches the work zone during the active window?
- Did I compare a feasible backup or a different departure time?
- Did I verify the latest agency update close to departure?
- Do I know where I can safely change plans?
- Will I follow temporary signs and traffic control if they differ from an app?
That process gives you a route based on the information source closest to the road, a fallback if conditions change and a clear rule for decisions inside the work zone.
