When a road near your home closes, use the highway authority’s latest notice and the signed diversion as your primary route plan. Confirm the closure limits and hours, establish whether your property is reachable from either side, check vehicle restrictions, ask the works team about local access, and check again immediately before leaving. A navigation app can help you understand surrounding roads, but it does not replace temporary signs, legal restrictions, or instructions at the work site.
The six-step method
A safe route plan is more than asking a satnav for an alternative. Temporary closures can include excavations, barriers, lifting equipment, narrow lanes, weight limits, or a diversion selected for vehicles that an app cannot identify correctly. Work through these steps in order:

- Find the current update from the responsible council, highway authority, or road operator.
- Record the exact closure boundaries, operating times, reason for the closure, and any published map.
- Work out which side of the closure your home or destination is on and whether resident access is allowed.
- Follow the signed diversion, checking height, width, weight and other restrictions for your vehicle.
- Ask the site team or works organisation how residents, visitors and deliveries should approach the property.
- Recheck the notice and the road signs shortly before departure, because timings and arrangements can change.
The examples below are based on guidance from English councils and National Highways. Other countries and road authorities may use different notification systems or access rules.
1. Find the authoritative closure information
Start with the highway authority
Search the website of the county, unitary or metropolitan council responsible for the road. Look for its roadworks map, road-closure page, traffic bulletin or diversion notice. Worcestershire County Council’s travel map, for example, brings together roadworks, emergency closures, restrictions and weather-related problems. It also warns that some entries come from third parties and may be delayed. Treat that map as a useful starting point, then verify important details against the authority’s individual closure notice and the signs on the road.

If the closure is on England’s strategic road network, check National Highways’ planned-closure report as well as local information. The report covers planned full closures and displayed an update date of 12 October 2026 when consulted. National Highways warns that planned arrangements can change at short notice, so an entry made days earlier is not a guarantee that the road will be open or closed at the time shown.
Capture the details before you plan a route
Save or write down the following information from the latest notice:
- The road name, settlement and identifiable junctions or landmarks at each end of the closure.
- The start and expected end dates, daily operating hours and whether the closure is continuous or only applies at certain times.
- Whether the restriction is a full road closure, a lane closure, a temporary traffic order, a weight restriction or an emergency response.
- Any map showing the closure limits, signed diversion, access points or turning restrictions.
- The name and contact details of the council, contractor, utility company or other organisation managing the works.
- Specific notes for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, buses, deliveries, agricultural vehicles or heavy goods vehicles.
A roadworks map may show a wider project area than the point where machinery is working. Do not infer the legal closure limits from the visible excavation alone; use the notice and signs.
2. Establish exactly what is closed and where your home sits
Separate the work area from the closure boundary
Road workers may be occupying only a short section while the legal closure extends between two junctions. Conversely, a notice may describe a closure at one carriageway or lane while the opposite side remains usable. Identify the signed boundary at both ends and mark your home, workplace, school or delivery address in relation to it.
Check whether the notice specifies access from one end, access for residents only, or a complete diversion for every road user. “Local access” does not automatically mean a private car can drive through the work zone. It may refer to a footway, a controlled approach, or access at particular times under the direction of the crew.
Consider both approaches to the property
Look at the road network on each side of the closure. A property may be reachable from a rear junction, another village or an adjacent road even when its usual approach is blocked. Write down the last unrestricted junction on each side and the point where you would need to turn around if access is refused.
Do not drive into a signed “road closed” section to test whether you can get through. Barriers can move, the surface can be unsafe, and a route that appears open to pedestrians may not be safe for a vehicle. Wait for explicit direction from the site team or the authority.
Read timing conditions carefully
Some works operate overnight; others close a road only while a crew is present. A notice may list separate dates for preparation, excavation, surfacing and removal of the order. Plan for the stated restriction, not for the time you happened to pass the road on an earlier day. If the sign on the day differs from an old online entry, the current sign and on-site instruction govern your immediate movement; contact the authority to resolve the discrepancy before making a non-essential journey.

3. Use the signed diversion as your default route
Why the official route takes priority
Authorities select a diversion with the road network, turning space, bridge limits, traffic management and safety of different road users in mind. It may be longer than a familiar lane or shortcut, but an unofficial shortcut can lead to a width restriction, a weak bridge, a school street, a private road or another closure. Cheshire East Council describes the official diversion as the most appropriate route for the temporary arrangement, while Suffolk County Council explains that signed diversions are intended to guide traffic around the closure.
Follow every sign, including advance-warning boards, temporary direction arrows and “access only” instructions. Missing one turn can put you back at the closure or send you onto a road that is unsuitable for your vehicle.

A mapping app can help you see the surrounding network, estimate where congestion may form and identify an alternative meeting point outside the closure. It may not know about a newly installed barrier, an emergency closure, a temporary weight order or a diversion selected for a particular vehicle class. Map data can also lag behind the authority’s signs.
“Drivers should follow road signs and instructions on site, and not rely on digital navigation tools which are just a guide.”
Dorset Council roadworks guidance
Enter the official diversion into your device only after you understand it, and stop somewhere safe before changing the route. Never turn around, pass a barrier or ignore a restriction because an app displays a shorter journey.
How the two guidance sources differ
| Question | Official notice and signs | Digital navigation service |
|---|---|---|
| Authority for the temporary closure | Governs the legal restriction, diversion and on-site instructions. | Not the authority for a temporary traffic arrangement. |
| Recency | Signs and current instructions reflect conditions at the road; online notices still need a date check. | May lag behind emergency work, changed hours or moved barriers. |
| Vehicle suitability | Can direct traffic along a route selected for restrictions and road classification. | May suggest a road that is too narrow, low, weak or restricted for your vehicle. |
| Local access detail | May state whether residents can approach from one side or must wait for an escort. | Usually cannot determine whether a specific driveway is accessible through a work site. |
| Best use | Follow it as the route you actually drive. | Use it to understand the network and monitor general traffic, without overriding signs. |
4. Check that the diversion suits your vehicle
Look for restrictions before setting off
Read the notice and each diversion sign for maximum height, width, weight, length, axle-load, vehicle-class, access and turning restrictions. A route suitable for a small car may be unsuitable for a van, caravan, plant vehicle, bus or articulated lorry. Include the vehicle, trailer, load and any roof equipment when considering dimensions.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. A signed diversion can use a bridge, narrow street or low structure several miles away. If a sign requires a particular class of vehicle to use a different route, that requirement takes precedence over the route shown by your app.
Heavy goods vehicles need particular care
Gloucestershire County Council’s patching guidance tells HGV drivers to follow the signed diversion rather than rely on satnav for route suitability. The same principle applies to construction traffic and delivery vehicles: confirm the route with the traffic-management contact, check the vehicle dimensions and allow for turning space. If the published route appears impossible for your vehicle, stop before the restriction and contact the authority or works organisation; do not improvise through residential streets.

Plan for vulnerable road users
Walking and cycling arrangements may differ from motor-vehicle arrangements. A temporary footway or crossing does not prove that cars can pass, and a cycle diversion may use a different entrance. Check the signs for your mode of travel and allow extra time where a crossing is controlled by a marshal or temporary signal.
5. Confirm whether you can reach a home inside the closure
Ask the people controlling the work
Contact the organisation named in the notice or speak to the crew at the signed access point. Ask four specific questions:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Is the property reachable by vehicle today?
- If so, from which end of the closure and during what hours?
- Will a marshal or escort be required, and where should you wait?
- If vehicle access is not safe, is pedestrian access available and where is the approved parking or drop-off point?
Suffolk County Council explains that workers may direct residents through when it can be done safely, or require them to use the diversion. Cheshire East Council likewise treats access as dependent on the works arrangement rather than as an automatic right to drive through. Excavations, machinery, temporary surfaces and moving vehicles can make access unsafe even when the destination is only a short distance inside the closure.
Give the crew useful information
Tell the site team the address, vehicle type, reason for the journey and any time-critical need. A delivery van, a mobility-related journey and a large construction vehicle may require different arrangements. Do not move cones, enter a fenced area or ask a worker to stop machinery so you can pass. Wait where instructed, keep clear of plant and follow the marshal’s hand signals.
Prepare for access from the other end
If the crew says the usual approach is blocked, plan from the opposite side of the closure rather than repeatedly returning to the barrier. Check whether the alternative approach has a separate closure, a one-way order, a height limit or a narrow turning point. For a delivery or collection, agree a safe meeting location outside the work area and tell the recipient exactly where to walk or drive.
6. Recheck shortly before leaving
Verify the date and operating hours
Open the authority’s latest page again before departure, especially after severe weather, an emergency repair or a weekend. National Highways warns that planned closure schedules can change at short notice. Gloucestershire County Council’s guidance page showed an update date of 5 October 2026, and Cheshire East’s roadworks page was marked reviewed on 27 August 2026; those dates illustrate why you should check the page’s freshness rather than rely on a saved screenshot.
Compare the notice with what you see on the road
If current signs and an online map conflict, obey the signs and on-site instructions for the immediate journey. Pull over safely before calling the authority or works organisation for clarification. Record the location, sign wording, direction of travel and time of day so the person answering can identify the arrangement.
Allow for a changing diversion
Temporary signs may be moved as a project advances. A route that was signed last week can change when the crew switches from excavation to resurfacing. Keep the authority’s contact number accessible, tell anyone meeting you that the approach may change, and leave enough time to follow the full diversion rather than attempting an unapproved shortcut.

A repeatable departure checklist
Use this checklist for every journey during the closure:
- Source: I checked the responsible authority’s current notice, map or closure report.
- Limits: I know the closure’s two ends, dates, hours and whether it is a full closure or a restricted access arrangement.
- Destination: I know which side my property is on and whether access is allowed today.
- Vehicle: I checked height, width, weight, length and any class-specific restriction for the vehicle and trailer.
- Route: I have identified the signed diversion and know where to join it.
- Contact: I have the works organisation or authority’s contact details if access changes.
- Final check: I reviewed the information shortly before leaving and will follow the signs if conditions differ.
Examples of how the process works
Driving a car to a house just inside the closure
First, locate the closure ends and mark the driveway. Then read whether the notice allows resident access or says access is controlled by the crew. Call the works contact before leaving. If the crew confirms access from the eastern end only, approach via the signed diversion to that end, stop at the designated point and wait for instructions. If access is refused, park where directed outside the work area and use the approved pedestrian route; do not follow an app through the barrier.

Delivering materials in a van or rigid lorry
Confirm the vehicle’s dimensions and load before selecting a route. Check all diversion signs for low bridges, weight limits and width restrictions. Ask the site contact whether the delivery can be received at the property or must be transferred at a safe location. A route that is legal for a car may not be suitable for the delivery vehicle, so follow the vehicle-specific signs and any instruction given by the traffic-management team.
Facing an emergency closure with little notice
Use the authority’s live traffic or roadworks information, but assume that online entries may be delayed. Approach the nearest signed diversion, obey marshals and do not enter an unmarked side road to bypass the closure. If you are returning home and the normal route is blocked, identify a safe place to stop, contact the authority or works organisation, and ask which approach is currently open.
Walking or cycling to a property
Read the pedestrian or cycle signs separately from the motor-vehicle diversion. A temporary crossing may be available even when the carriageway is closed, but it can move as works progress. Stay on the marked route, keep away from plant and follow instructions from marshals. Do not interpret a footpath opening as permission for a car or van to pass.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Safer correction |
|---|---|---|
| Following the shortest app route | The app may not know the closure, a temporary order or a vehicle restriction. | Use the signed diversion; use the app only for general orientation and traffic awareness. |
| Assuming “local access” means unrestricted driving | Access may be limited to residents, certain hours, one direction, pedestrians or escorted vehicles. | Ask the crew or works organisation exactly how and when you may approach. |
| Driving through because the excavation looks passable | Barriers, unstable surfaces and moving plant create hazards beyond the visible work. | Stop at the closure and obey the barrier and marshal. |
| Using a car diversion for a large vehicle | Narrow roads, low bridges or weak structures may make it unsuitable. | Check dimensions and restrictions; HGV drivers should follow the route signed for them. |
| Relying on an old notice or screenshot | Planned hours and routes can change at short notice. | Check the authority’s latest update and the signs immediately before departure. |
| Turning around at the barrier without checking the wider route | The reverse approach may contain another restriction or no safe turning area. | Stop safely, obtain the current diversion and choose a suitable turning point. |
What varies by location
The authorities cited here are in England and the UK. A closure in another country, or on a privately managed road, may use different legal orders, maps, contact channels and diversion standards. Even within England, a council road, a trunk road managed by National Highways and a utility excavation can have different notice formats and access arrangements.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Apply the method locally: identify who controls the road, read that authority’s current information, follow the signs installed for the closure and ask the organisation managing the works about property access. Do not generalise one council’s resident-access practice to every closure.
When to delay the journey or seek help
Delay a non-essential trip if the authority has not published a route, signs are missing or the conditions at the closure are unclear. Contact the authority or works organisation before travelling when the property is inside the limits, your vehicle is large or unusual, you need a timed delivery, or an online map conflicts with the road signs. For urgent health or safety situations, use the appropriate emergency service and tell responders about the closure and any access instruction you have received.
The dependable rule is simple: current official information establishes the arrangement, signed diversions establish the route, and the site team establishes whether a particular property can be reached safely. Treat navigation software as an aid—not as permission to override any of those three.
