Start with the agency responsible for the highway, confirm exactly what is closed, then test the entire proposed alternate route for current incidents, construction, speeds, travel time and restrictions. Follow any agency-designated detour and traffic-control signs; a navigation app can suggest options, but it does not replace the road authority. Check again immediately before leaving, and use hands-free voice information or pull over before handling a phone.
Because no specific country, highway, direction, origin or destination is named here, this is a repeatable planning method rather than a recommendation for one incident. Official 511 services are regional, and their maps, cameras, phone features and update schedules differ.

Use this 10-minute decision sequence first
- Identify the closure. Record the highway number, direction, closed endpoints or interchanges, reason and expected duration from the responsible road authority.
- Find the official detour. Read the agency notice and follow posted signs. Treat an app reroute as a suggestion, not as permission to ignore a signed or barricaded closure.
- Inspect the alternate. Check the whole route for incidents, lane or road closures, construction, current speeds, estimated travel time and any published vehicle restrictions.
- Compare legal open choices. Weigh total time, distance, congestion, road complexity and official status rather than choosing the shortest line on a map.
- Refresh immediately before departure. A crash on the detour can make yesterday’s best choice unusable.
- Protect your attention. Set the route while parked. Once moving, use a hands-free voice service where available or stop in a safe location before looking at a screen.
Confirm what is actually closed
Define the closure’s limits
A headline such as “highway closed” is not enough to plan around. Determine whether the restriction affects one direction or both, every lane or only a ramp, and a short segment or a corridor between interchanges. Note the nearest usable exits, the closure’s start and end points, and whether the authority gives a reopening estimate. If the notice does not state an endpoint or duration, treat both as uncertain rather than filling the gap with an app’s assumption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAlso check the purpose of the closure. A planned work zone may have a published detour and timetable, while a crash, fire, flooding or hazardous-material incident can expand or move without warning. Record the time of the latest update so you know how old your information is.

Use the responsible authority and regional 511 service
Begin with the state, provincial, county or municipal road authority that controls the affected road. Regional traveler-information systems commonly use the 511 name, but they are separate services with different coverage. Arizona’s AZ511, for example, reports state-highway crashes, construction, delays and closures and provides alternate-route information, travel times, cameras, route alerts and personalized routes. That feature set should be treated as an example of what one regional system offers, not a promise about every 511 service.
Caltrans describes 511 as a collection of regional services rather than one nationwide database. Depending on the area, a service may provide a website, phone line, mobile tools, camera images, traffic speeds or multimodal planning. Search for the 511 service covering the road you will actually use, and verify that the proposed alternate lies inside its reporting area.
Find the official detour before improvising
Read signs and agency instructions together
When the authority publishes a detour, use it as the starting route. On the ground, follow barricades, police directions, variable-message signs and temporary lane markings even if a digital map proposes a shorter path. A designated detour may be selected for clearance, turning space, emergency access or local restrictions that an app cannot see.

Write down the detour’s key turns before setting out. Include the first safe exit, the point where it rejoins the original highway and an alternative stopping place if traffic becomes stationary. Do not enter a closed ramp to reach a route that appears open on a screen.
Distinguish a suggested route from an official one
An app can calculate a path around a mapped closure, but its data may lag a newly erected barricade or a temporary traffic-control change. Conversely, an agency feed can show a closure while an app still displays normal travel time. When the two disagree, obey signs and the road authority, then verify the discrepancy through the official traveler-information channel when it is safe to do so.

Check the entire alternate route
Do not inspect only the first few miles around the original closure. A second crash, bridge restriction or work zone farther along can turn a plausible detour into a dead end. Review the route from your actual origin to your actual destination, including the final local streets.
Information to collect
| Check | What it tells you | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Official status | Whether the road is open, restricted or designated as the detour | Use the authority that controls that road; neighboring jurisdictions may publish separately. |
| Current travel time and speed | How traffic is moving now and how long the route is expected to take | These are changing estimates, not a guarantee of arrival time. |
| Incidents | Crashes, disabled vehicles, emergency activity or other disruptions | Check the full corridor; a minor-looking incident can block a narrow road. |
| Construction and lane closures | Planned work, reduced lanes, ramp closures and temporary patterns | Work schedules and restrictions can differ by direction and time. |
| Cameras and sensors | A visual indication of queues, weather or pavement conditions | Coverage is uneven. 511NY notes that cameras and sensors are not installed on every road. |
| Vehicle suitability | Whether published height, weight, hazardous-load or seasonal rules affect your vehicle | Use restrictions only when the local authority states them; do not infer clearance from a map. |
Southern California 511 describes route-specific traffic speeds, travel times, incidents, lane closures and accidents. It states that traffic information is updated every minute, but that interval belongs to that service and should not be generalized to other regions. Bay Area 511’s map can show congestion, incidents, closures, construction, events and camera snapshots; the service also cautions that camera availability and reliability may be outside its operator’s control.
Compare two or more open routes
When several legal routes remain available, make the comparison explicit instead of accepting the first result. The following worksheet keeps unlike trade-offs visible:
| Decision factor | Route A | Route B | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official status or designation | Record the current agency message | Record the current agency message | Prefer an agency-designated detour when one exists. |
| Estimated total travel time | Current estimate | Current estimate | Include the approach to the detour and the destination end, not just highway miles. |
| Distance | Route mileage | Route mileage | A shorter route can still be slower in a queue or through many turns. |
| Incidents and congestion | List locations and severity | List locations and severity | Look for problems along the whole route. |
| Work zones and closures | List affected segments | List affected segments | Confirm ramps and connecting roads, not just the main line. |
| Road type and complexity | Freeway, two-lane road, urban grid or other | Freeway, two-lane road, urban grid or other | More turns and fewer lanes increase the chance of a missed maneuver or local queue. |
| Vehicle or local suitability | Any published restriction | Any published restriction | Reject a route that is not legal or suitable for your vehicle. |
No universal formula decides how to weight these factors. A route that is two miles shorter may be a poor choice if its only bridge is blocked, while a longer divided road may remain predictable. Choose the option that is open, legal, understandable and least exposed to the incidents you can verify now.
Step-by-step route-planning procedure
1. Mark origin, destination and the closure
Use the actual starting point and destination, not a city center or a highway name alone. Mark the closed segment and every interchange you might use to leave or rejoin the corridor. This prevents a route planner from quietly sending you toward the blocked point.

2. Capture the latest official notice
Open the road authority’s incident page or regional 511 map and note its update time. Confirm direction, endpoints, lane status, expected duration and any agency-designated detour. If the authority lists a phone number, the 511 call service can provide current information without requiring you to look at a screen; availability and commands vary by region.

3. Build the first candidate around the detour
Enter the designated detour or manually trace it through the route planner. Check that every connecting road is open and that the final approach to your destination does not cross the closure from the wrong side. Save the route or write down major turns while parked.
4. Test the alternate’s full corridor
Inspect traffic speed, travel time, incidents, construction and closures from the first turn to the destination. Open available camera views, but remember that an absent camera is not evidence of clear pavement. If the service reports no data for a segment, mark that uncertainty instead of treating it as normal traffic.
5. Compare a second legal option when one exists
Repeat the same checks for another route. Record the time of each check because a comparison made twenty minutes apart may reflect changing conditions rather than a true route difference. Include roads outside the original highway’s authority if the alternate crosses a county or municipal boundary; the local agency may be the only source for that segment.
6. Decide when to leave
Refresh the closure and alternate immediately before departure. If conditions are deteriorating, delay the trip when practical or choose another mode. Do not assume that a route marked clear earlier will remain clear through the departure window.

7. Recheck at a safe stopping point
If the journey is long, plan a lawful place to stop and reassess. A passenger can check updates; a solo driver should use a hands-free voice service where available or pull completely off the travel lanes before touching the phone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to know whether a detour is still open
Look for confirmation from the authority responsible for the detour, not only the original highway authority. Check a current closure or incident listing, the latest map timestamp, available cameras and any variable-message signs you pass. 511NY specifically advises travelers to ask about conditions on the alternate route they are considering. That warning matters because an alternate can fail after the original closure notice is published.
When monitoring coverage is limited, combine sources: an official map for status, a camera for a visual check where available, and signs or local traffic-control personnel on the road. If no current information exists, treat the route as uncertain and retain a second legal option rather than assuming it is open.

- Program or review the route before entering traffic.
- Use voice commands only when the regional service supports them and they do not distract you.
- Pull over in a legal, safe location before reading a map, changing a destination or comparing routes.
- Expect sudden merges, stopped queues and workers near a closure; follow temporary signs and police directions.
- Never drive through cones, barricades or a lane marked closed merely because a map shows it as available.
When driving is not the best answer
A major closure can make driving impractical even when an alternate exists. Check local transit, commuter information, rideshare availability or another practical mode if the affected region offers them. Southern California 511 includes transit and commuter services, and Caltrans notes that many regional 511 systems support multimodal planning, but these options are not available for every trip.

For a time-critical journey, contact the destination and explain the closure before committing to a risky route. For a freight, work or service vehicle, verify any published restrictions that apply to dimensions, weight, hazardous materials or access hours; a general passenger-car route may not be suitable.
What to do when every alternate is deteriorating
Delay or cancel when possible
If every candidate has a new crash, a growing queue or an uncertain closure, waiting can be safer and faster than repeatedly switching routes. Ask whether the trip is essential and whether the destination can accept a later arrival.
Move only among confirmed legal options
Do not create an unofficial shortcut through shoulders, emergency access lanes, private roads or closed neighborhoods. If the authority opens a new detour, replace your saved route with that instruction and follow the temporary signs.
Escalate urgent needs correctly
For an immediate safety emergency, use the local emergency number. For ordinary travel information, use the responsible road authority or regional 511 service. Keep those functions separate so emergency channels remain available for emergencies.
Limits you should expect from 511 and map data
- Regional boundaries: A service may cover only selected counties, highways or metropolitan areas. Southern California 511, for example, is a five-county regional service, not a statewide source for every California road.
- Uneven sensors: Cameras, speed sensors and incident reports are not present on every road, and camera images can be unavailable or unreliable.
- Changing update intervals: One service may publish traffic information every minute while another refreshes differently. Treat the displayed timestamp as service-specific.
- Estimated times: Travel-time figures describe current conditions and can change as queues form or clear; they are not arrival guarantees.
- Different authorities: A state highway, city street and county road may each have separate notices. Check all jurisdictions crossed by the alternate.
A printable closure-planning checklist
- Highway, direction and closed endpoints recorded
- Latest authority update time recorded
- Official detour identified, if one exists
- Alternate checked from origin through destination
- Incidents, construction, closures and current speeds reviewed
- Camera or sensor limitations noted
- Vehicle restrictions checked
- Second legal route considered
- Route set while parked or delegated to a passenger
- Safe stopping place identified for a later refresh
- Transit or another mode considered if driving is impractical
The practical rule
A sound detour decision is based on current authority information plus a complete check of the alternate, not on distance alone or a single app result. Confirm the closure, obey the designated traffic plan, compare open routes using the same criteria, refresh before departure and reassess without touching a phone while moving.
