Check the official notice for dates, work hours, lane or ramp closures, direction of impact and any signed detour. Then compare routes and departure times shortly before leaving, and recheck once more if conditions are changing. Treat app directions as an aid, not authority: signs, flaggers, temporary signals and legal restrictions at the work zone always take priority.
Start with the agency responsible for the road
A familiar commute can change overnight when a contractor shifts traffic into a new phase, closes a ramp or starts overnight work. The most dependable source for what is planned is the agency managing that road: a state department of transportation, county public-works department, city transportation department or the region’s official 511 traveler-information service.

Look for a project page, lane-closure bulletin, construction alert, incident map or traffic-management-center update. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance says agencies may distribute work-zone information through traveler-information websites, mobile apps, 511 systems and official social accounts. Those channels can describe planned work as well as current conditions, but the exact schedule and detour are local facts that must be verified for your corridor.
What to record from the notice
- Project dates: the advertised start and end dates, noting that dates can move.
- Work hours: whether activity is continuous, limited to nights or weekends, or scheduled in recurring windows.
- Traffic control: lane reductions, alternating traffic, shoulder use, ramp closures, turn restrictions or a full road closure.
- Direction of impact: inbound, outbound, both directions or a particular intersection or ramp.
- Official detour: the route shown on agency signs or in the project notice, including vehicle restrictions.
- Phase changes: dates when traffic switches to a different side of the roadway or when a closure begins or ends.
Save the project page or note the update time. An older notice can remain searchable after a newer traffic-control plan has replaced it, so prefer the agency’s latest dated update.

Use a repeatable planning sequence
The following process works for a regular commute, a one-time trip or a construction project that changes in stages.
1. Identify the exact project and your exposure
Write down the road, direction, interchange, bridge or intersection that could affect your trip. A project several miles away may not matter if it is on the opposite carriageway, while a ramp closure can disrupt a route that never enters the main work area. Search the responsible agency and 511 service using the road name, nearby cross street and the words “construction,” “lane closure” or “detour.”
Compare the notice with your normal path. Mark whether you would pass through the work zone, use a closed ramp, join traffic before the closure or approach from the opposite direction. This prevents a common mistake: seeing a project announcement and abandoning a route that is not actually affected.
2. Check in advance, then check again near departure
Advance information gives you time to change your route, departure time or mode before you are committed. FHWA’s work-zone guidance specifically describes early notification as a way to encourage alternate routes or departure times when appropriate.
Near departure, open the current agency or 511 update again and check live traffic in your navigation app. Compare the timestamp and wording of the official notice with what the app is reporting. A scheduled closure may not yet have produced a queue; an unscheduled incident may create a delay that was not in the advance notice. Recheck when you leave for the return trip if the work is still active.
3. Check the official detour before accepting an app suggestion
If the agency publishes or signs a detour, treat it as the baseline route. A generic navigation app can suggest a side street that is technically open but unsuitable for the vehicles, turning movements or traffic volumes the agency planned for. It may also send drivers toward a second restriction.
Use the app to discover options and estimate current travel time, then confirm that the option is compatible with the project notice, posted restrictions and your vehicle. If signs at the road differ from an earlier online notice, follow the signs and instructions in place.

4. Compare at least two complete routes
Enter your destination and use the app’s alternate-route display. For each option, note travel time, distance, whether it enters the work zone, and where it rejoins your normal path. Do not compare only the fastest number: a route with a lower nominal time may have greater variability, unfamiliar turns or a long approach to a bottleneck.
Google Maps documentation describes alternate routes and estimated travel times, and notes that route or mode ranking can consider duration, distance, price and mode preference. Those estimates are dynamic and feature availability varies by region, platform and travel mode.
5. Test different departure times
If your schedule permits, use the app’s depart-at or arrive-by planning flow to test earlier and later starts. The exact control and available modes vary, so confirm what the app is calculating. Compare the expected delay at each time rather than assuming that “earlier” is always better.
Work-zone queues often depend on when lanes are restricted and when demand reaches the area. An earlier departure can avoid a planned closure window; a later one can miss the peak queue or coincide with a lane reopening. Record the time you must arrive, the latest acceptable arrival and the time needed to recover if the first route fails.

FHWA work-zone strategies include diversion to transit or rideshare, and some navigation tools can display walking, cycling, transit or combinations of modes where local data exists. Check the actual service schedule, transfer time, walking distance, accessibility and cost for your trip. A mode is useful only if it is available at the time you need it and fits your physical, work or vehicle requirements.
For a short closure, parking near a transit stop or sharing a ride may be practical. For a long project with repeated delays, a temporary change in commute mode may be more predictable than continually changing driving routes.
7. Set navigation before moving
Choose the route while parked. If you use a phone, place it in a secure position that does not obstruct visibility and use legally permitted hands-free directions. A phone mount is optional; it is not a substitute for attention to traffic. Once moving, do not handle the device to investigate a reroute.

Google’s navigation guidance states: “When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on.” That rule matters most in a work zone, where temporary signs, flaggers and lane markings can change faster than an app’s map data.

| Factor | Normal route | Official detour | App alternate | Other mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Expected travel time at planned departure | Record the live estimate and its range if shown. | Record the estimate after entering the signed detour. | Record the current app estimate. | Include waiting, transfer and walking time. |
| Distance | Use the current route distance. | Note added distance from the closure. | Note added distance and extra turns. | Include access to stops or pickup points. |
| Work-zone exposure | State whether you enter the active area. | Usually designed to bypass the closure; verify signs. | Check every segment against the project notice. | May avoid the roadway entirely. |
| Restriction risk | Check closed lanes, ramps and turns. | Check vehicle, weight, height and local restrictions. | Check for narrow, unfamiliar or unsuitable streets. | Check service availability and accessibility. |
| Reliability | Consider queue variability and likely merge points. | Consider whether diversion traffic is building. | Consider frequent rerouting or data lag. | Consider fixed schedules and missed connections. |
| Schedule flexibility | Can you leave earlier or later? | Can you absorb the added distance? | Can you take a less familiar route? | Can you meet the service timetable? |
| Cost | Include fuel or toll changes if relevant. | Include added fuel or tolls. | Include any route-specific charges. | Include fare, parking or rideshare cost. |
The sources do not establish one universal weighting for these factors. Choose according to your trip: a delivery vehicle may prioritize restrictions and turning space, while a time-critical appointment may prioritize predictable arrival over the shortest distance.
How to choose between leaving earlier and taking another route
Leave earlier when the route remains suitable
An earlier departure is sensible when the agency notice shows work beginning later, when the route has no closure but is expected to carry diverted traffic, or when the alternate roads are substantially longer. Confirm that leaving early does not place you in a scheduled overnight closure or a period when lanes are being set up.
Change routes when the work removes a critical movement
Take the official detour or a verified alternate when your ramp is closed, a turn is prohibited, the road is fully closed or the app shows a queue that threatens your arrival time. Compare the complete route, not just the segment around the closure; delays can move to the detour’s entry and exit points.
Change modes when every driving option is unstable
Transit, rideshare, walking or a combination can be preferable when a project repeatedly shifts traffic, when parking or access at the destination is constrained, or when you can use a scheduled service that avoids the affected corridor. Verify local availability rather than assuming a mode is offered in every city.
What to do when the plan changes
The app shows a road as open, but signs show a closure
Follow the signs, barricades and traffic-control personnel. Stop in a safe legal location before reviewing the map, then select the signed detour or contact the agency’s current traveler-information service. Do not drive around a barricade because an app has not updated.

The official notice lists a closure, but traffic appears normal
Check the date, time window and direction. The closure may be scheduled for later, limited to a ramp you do not use, or temporarily lifted. Keep the notice available and recheck near the actual work period; normal traffic now does not cancel a later restriction.
Your alternate route is filling with diverted traffic
Recompare the official detour, your original route and a different departure time. Avoid repeatedly changing lanes or making abrupt turns to save a few minutes. If the only options are deteriorating, choose the route with the clearest legal path and the most predictable arrival, then allow extra time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA route uses roads unfamiliar to you
Preview the turns while parked, identify where you can safely stop and confirm that the road is appropriate for your vehicle. An unfamiliar shortcut is not automatically better than a longer signed detour. Keep the route instructions available without handling the phone while driving.
The project changes phase during your trip
For a return journey, start a new check rather than assuming the morning path still applies. Lane direction, ramp access and the official detour can change between commuting periods. Review the agency update and live traffic again before leaving the destination.

The agency notice answers, “What is legally and operationally closed, and what detour has been designated?” A navigation app answers, “Given current traffic and the options in its map, what routes and travel times are available?” Neither source replaces the other.
FHWA’s Work Zone Intelligent Transportation Systems: Technology Supplement, published approximately in 2023, reported that 98 percent of the studied agencies provided some form of real-time traveler information. In the same supplement, 40 percent of drivers indicated that real-time information was the most highly sought-after type of information used in trip decisions. These are findings from the cited study context, not a universal current estimate for every agency or driver.

The supplement also reported that apps and on-road signs received the most favorable driver feedback among the delivery methods it examined, while advisory radio and 511 phone systems ranked lowest for user approval. That preference comparison does not mean a 511 website or app is inaccurate; it describes how respondents rated delivery channels.

Safety and legal checks before entering a work zone
- Read the project notice and set the route before moving.
- Follow temporary signs, lane markings, signals, flaggers and police instructions, even when an app proposes another movement.
- Obey posted speed limits and any temporary restrictions.
- Do not look at or manipulate a phone while driving. Use voice guidance only in a manner allowed by local law.
- Keep a secure mounting position out of the driver’s sight lines if you use one.
- Do not cross barricades, cones or closed lanes to recover a preferred route.
- Allow space for merges and expect traffic patterns to change at work-zone entrances and exits.
- Check vehicle-specific restrictions on an official detour before setting out.
Construction schedules, lane configurations and travel times can change without much notice. A plan is successful when it gets you to a legal, usable route with enough time—not when it preserves your normal turns at any cost.
A five-minute pre-departure checklist
- Identify the road project and confirm that it affects your direction, ramp or intersection.
- Read the latest state, county or city transportation notice and the official 511 update.
- Record closure times, lane or ramp restrictions and the signed detour.
- Open your navigation app, enter the destination and compare at least two routes.
- Test an earlier or later departure if your schedule allows.
- Check transit, walking, cycling or rideshare when driving is slow or uncertain.
- Choose the route that fits your vehicle, schedule and tolerance for variability—not merely the smallest distance.
- Set navigation while parked and confirm the first turns.
- Follow road signs and temporary traffic control if they differ from the app.
- Recheck before the return trip or any later journey through the project.
Example: making the decision without a project-specific guess
Suppose your normal commute uses a bridge approach listed for one-lane traffic from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while a nearby ramp is closed for the same project. You leave at 8:15 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m.
For the morning, verify whether the one-lane restriction is active at 8:15 and whether setup work begins earlier than the advertised window. Compare the normal route with the agency’s signed detour and an app alternate. If the normal route is open but already developing a queue, test a departure before the restriction or use the detour. For the evening, start a separate check: the ramp closure may still apply, and traffic may be heavier in the direction that was quiet in the morning. If a scheduled transit service bypasses the bridge and meets your arrival time, include its waiting and transfer time in the comparison rather than treating it as a free shortcut.
This method deliberately avoids inventing a “best” route without a location, project notice and departure time. The best choice depends on the current restriction, traffic, vehicle and schedule.
When to ask the road agency directly
Contact the responsible agency or consult its current traveler-information channel when the notice is ambiguous, two official pages conflict, a detour appears unsuitable for your vehicle, or the closure affects an emergency, accessible or commercial trip. Include the road name, direction, nearest cross street, date and approximate travel time. Those details let the agency distinguish your question from another phase of the project.
For a general U.S. commute, there is no single nationwide detour map that can establish a location-specific answer. Confirm the local project and current conditions each time you travel through an active work zone.
