Start with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for every award year, then compare each college’s written offer with awards from professional organizations and local chapters. Your actual eligibility depends on your income and other FAFSA data, school, state, enrollment level, accredited program, residency, academic progress and the specific award cycle.
Use grants and scholarships first because they normally do not require repayment. Treat work-study as wages earned through a job, not as an immediate tuition discount, and evaluate loans only after you know the remaining net cost.

Start with the five funding categories
Construction management students usually assemble funding from several sources rather than relying on one large award. Before applying, separate options by how money is earned, whether it must be repaid and what can cause an award to change.
| Funding type | How it helps | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Federal grants | Need-based gift aid for eligible students; grants generally do not need repayment. | FAFSA completion, undergraduate eligibility, enrollment and award-year limits. Withdrawal or failure to meet conditions can create repayment obligations. |
| School and state grants | Institutional or state gift aid that can reduce billed tuition and fees. | Priority deadlines, residency, enrollment intensity, academic progress and whether FAFSA data is required. |
| Construction scholarships | Industry-funded awards tied to construction, engineering or related programs. | Accreditation, degree level, geography, first-generation status, references, transcripts, cycle dates and renewal rules. |
| Federal work-study | Provides access to eligible part-time jobs; you earn wages as you work. | Whether your school participates, job availability, hourly rate, work hours and how earnings are paid. |
| Student loans | Borrowed funds that can cover a remaining balance or living costs. | Interest, fees, repayment terms, annual and aggregate limits and the amount you would owe after graduation. |
The useful comparison is not the biggest advertised award. It is the remaining amount you must pay for tuition, fees, housing, transportation, books and other education costs after dependable gift aid is applied.

File the FAFSA every year
FAFSA is the gateway to federal consideration and is also used by many states and colleges to determine their own aid. The Department of Education states that the FAFSA form is free. The 2026–27 FAFSA is available, but a school or state may set an earlier priority date than the federal form’s availability or final deadline. Check the live deadline for every state and institution on your list.
Submit a complete application
- Create or use your Federal Student Aid account and gather the contributor information the form requests. Contributors may need to provide consent and financial data before the form can be processed.
- List every college where you are considering construction management. Schools use the resulting FAFSA information to build an aid offer; adding a school does not commit you to enrolling.
- Review answers carefully, complete required contributor sections and provide the required signatures or consents. An unfinished contributor section can delay processing.
- Submit the form and save the confirmation. Keep copies of the submitted information and note any correction or verification request from a school.
- Repeat the process for each award year you attend. Aid does not automatically carry forward simply because you filed in a previous year.
- Check state and institutional portals after submission. Some programs require a separate application even when FAFSA data is used.
Why timing matters
Some aid is limited and awarded until funds are exhausted. A school can receive your FAFSA information but still require its own scholarship form, institutional aid application or verification documents. Use each college’s published priority date as your working deadline, and do not assume that meeting the federal FAFSA deadline preserves access to every state or school program.
Understand Pell and FSEOG grants
The Federal Student Aid grants listing identifies the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) as grant programs for eligible undergraduates. The amounts below are statutory or program ceilings for award year 2026–27, not guaranteed personal awards.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Grant | Published 2026–27 maximum | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Pell Grant | Up to $7,395 per year | Your school calculates an individual amount from your FAFSA information, enrollment and other federal rules. |
| FSEOG | Up to $4,000 per year | Funds are limited and administered by participating schools for eligible undergraduates; a maximum is not a promise of an award. |
Read your aid offer for the amount, enrollment assumptions and renewal conditions. Grants generally do not require repayment, but repayment can arise if you withdraw, do not meet an award condition or receive funds to which you were not entitled. The Department of Education explains Pell eligibility and application basics in “Don’t Miss Out on Federal Pell Grants.”
Apply for construction-industry scholarships
Industry scholarships can fill a gap that federal need-based aid does not cover. Each organization defines “construction-related” differently, so read the current official criteria before spending time on an application. Accreditation, degree level, geographic rules and remaining enrollment are common filters.

AGC Education and Research Foundation
The AGC Education and Research Foundation scholarship program serves students in eligible undergraduate and graduate construction-management or construction-related engineering programs. The foundation identifies ABET-, ACCE- and some ATMAE-accredited programs as eligible categories; confirm that your exact program appears on the current eligible-program list.
| AGC route | Published amount | Published duration |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | $2,500 per year | Up to three years |
| Graduate | $3,750 per year | Up to two years |
The program page states that its 2027–28 application portal is open as of the current cycle information. Confirm the closing date, documents, enrollment requirements and eligible program list before relying on that status. The national foundation also directs applicants to local AGC chapter scholarships, which may have different amounts, residency rules and deadlines.
CMAA Foundation
The CMAA Foundation describes scholarships for postsecondary students pursuing construction management. Its scholarship information says eligible institutions are U.S.-based and accredited by a U.S. regional accrediting agency. The Foundation identifies the Fellows Scholarship and the Erica Lynn First Generation Scholarship, which supports first-generation students pursuing construction management, construction engineering or civil engineering with a construction-management emphasis.
The Foundation page says the 2026 Foundation Scholarship Program, Erica Lynn program and Fellows fund are closed. Monitor the official page for the next cycle instead of assuming the previous dates or forms remain active. Confirm whether your degree title, institution and first-generation status meet the specific program’s current definition.
NAWIC Founders’ Scholarship Foundation
The NAWIC Founders’ Scholarship Foundation supports college or trade-school students and apprentices pursuing construction-related education. Its current page reports awards starting at $2,000. For its undergraduate route, applicants must be enrolled in the United States in a construction-related associate or bachelor’s program and have at least one term remaining. High-school seniors and graduate students are generally ineligible for that undergraduate category.

The page displays dates that may not represent a future application cycle. Use the active application portal for the opening and closing dates that apply to your year. Local NAWIC chapters may offer additional scholarships with separate applications.
Local and regional programs
Local awards can be more restrictive but less crowded than national competitions. Search chapters near both your permanent residence and your college, because a program may use either location or require attendance in a particular state. The AGC Massachusetts and MCAP scholarship page illustrates this model: its eligibility is tied to Massachusetts residency or school attendance and to accredited programs related to construction, construction technology, construction engineering, civil engineering or construction management. Its posted deadline and cycle apply to that program only, not to every AGC scholarship.
Use the national organization pages to find chapter links, then check your college scholarship portal, state higher-education agency and local construction advancement groups. Keep a spreadsheet with each program’s location, eligible majors, degree level, minimum academic standing, required documents, deadline, award amount and renewal terms.
Ask your college for institutional aid
Financial-aid offices know which institutional grants, departmental scholarships and campus jobs are available to students in your exact program. Contact each school before accepting an offer and ask for written answers to the following:
- Which school grants and construction-management or engineering scholarships require a separate application?
- Was my FAFSA received, and is verification or another document still outstanding?
- What are the priority dates for institutional aid, departmental awards and housing-related assistance?
- Is an award renewable, and what GPA, credit-load, enrollment or satisfactory-academic-progress standard applies?
- Does the award apply to summer terms, a fifth year, an internship term or only the standard academic year?
- How will an outside scholarship change my aid package if my total assistance exceeds demonstrated need or attendance costs?
- Which part of the offer is grant or scholarship aid, which part is work-study and which part is a loan?
Request an itemized cost-of-attendance figure for your enrollment level. A commuter and a student living near campus can have very different non-billed costs even when tuition is identical.

Build an application calendar
Funding searches fail most often because a student applies only once, misses a local deadline or discovers an accreditation restriction after preparing an essay. Work backward from the first enrollment term.
| When | Action | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Before the FAFSA cycle opens or as soon as it is available | List target programs, confirm accreditation and identify state and institutional deadlines. | Program name, accreditor, degree level, campus and deadline. |
| As soon as the FAFSA is available for your award year | Submit the FAFSA, add schools and save confirmation. | Submission date, confirmation and any correction request. |
| Several months before scholarship deadlines | Request transcripts and references; draft a focused statement linking your construction goals to the award’s criteria. | Reference contact, transcript date and final document checklist. |
| During each organization’s active cycle | Apply to national, chapter and campus awards separately unless the program explicitly shares an application. | Submitted form, deadline, award year and renewal terms. |
| After offers arrive | Ask questions about conditions, outside scholarships and disbursement timing before accepting loans. | Net cost, gift aid, work-study, loans and unresolved questions. |
Compare offers by net cost, not headline awards
Create the same worksheet for every college. Start with the school’s total cost of attendance for your housing and enrollment situation, then subtract only aid that is confirmed and does not require repayment.
Estimated remaining cost = total cost of attendance − confirmed grants and scholarships.
Keep work-study and loans below that line because they have different consequences. Work-study requires you to obtain and perform a job; earnings are paid as wages and depend on hours and job availability. A loan supplies borrowed money now but creates principal, interest and repayment obligations later.

| Gift aid | Is the amount confirmed for this year, renewable, and contingent on a GPA or credit load? |
| Duration | Is it one-time, annual, or limited to a stated number of years? |
| Coverage | Does it reduce tuition only, or can it cover fees, housing, books or other attendance costs? |
| Timing | When will the award credit your account, and what must be completed before disbursement? |

| Unfunded balance | How much remains after gift aid, and can your family or employer realistically cover it? |

Check eligibility before you apply
Accreditation and exact program title
Construction management may be housed in a construction, engineering or technology department. An organization’s eligibility rule may depend on the program’s accreditor rather than the college’s overall accreditation. Ask the department or registrar for the exact accredited-program name and verify it against the scholarship’s current list.
Degree level and enrollment
Do not assume an undergraduate scholarship can be used for graduate study, or that a graduate award covers a certificate. Check whether the program requires full-time enrollment, a minimum number of credits, current U.S. enrollment or a specified number of terms remaining. NAWIC’s undergraduate route, for example, requires at least one term remaining and generally excludes graduate students and high-school seniors.
Residency and school location
Regional awards may require state residency, attendance at an in-state institution or both. Read whether “resident” means permanent home address, legal residency for tuition purposes or current school attendance. Apply to programs in both relevant areas only when their rules permit it.

An award can be renewable without being automatic. Record the required GPA, credit load, conduct standard, enrollment status and renewal form. Ask what happens after a leave of absence, a change of major, a reduced course load or a transfer.
Outside-scholarship adjustments
Tell the financial-aid office about every outside award. A school may need to adjust parts of an aid package to keep total assistance within federal or institutional limits. Ask whether the adjustment will reduce a loan first, work-study first or another grant.
Use a practical decision sequence
- Choose construction management programs whose accreditation, location and delivery format fit your career plan.
- Submit the FAFSA for the correct award year before each school’s priority date.
- Apply for Pell, FSEOG and other aid through the school process shown in your FAFSA-based offer.
- Complete every institutional, departmental, state, AGC, CMAA, NAWIC and local application for which you meet the written criteria.
- Ask for clarification on renewal, disbursement and outside-award treatment.
- Compare the remaining net cost and the amount of borrowing, not just the total package.
- Accept only the aid you need, keep copies of every condition and calendar the next renewal or FAFSA date.
What to keep in your records
Create one folder for each school and one for each external scholarship. Save the submitted FAFSA confirmation, aid offers, scholarship applications, essays, transcripts, recommendation requests, award letters and renewal conditions. Record the date you accepted or declined each component. This documentation makes it easier to correct a missing document, prove that an application was timely or explain an outside award to a financial-aid counselor.
Because award amounts, deadlines and eligibility rules can change by year, return to the official pages before every application: FAFSA, federal grants, Pell information, AGC, CMAA Foundation, NAWIC Founders’ Scholarship Foundation and the relevant local chapter or state agency.
