You can usually assemble a construction management degree budget from several sources rather than one award: federal and institutional aid, construction-industry scholarships, employer or union assistance, savings or wages, and—only after the lower-cost options are clear—loans. Start by filing the FAFSA for every academic year you want aid considered, then pursue construction-specific awards and ask both the school and your employer about their rules.
This guide covers U.S. programs and examples. Scholarship cycles, deadlines, accreditation requirements, and employer policies change, so verify the current terms with each provider before committing to a program.

Build your funding plan in the right order
Use this sequence so you know what money is available before borrowing:
- File the FAFSA each academic year. Colleges and career schools use it to assess eligibility for federal grants, work-study, and loans. Many states and schools also use FAFSA information for their own aid.
- Apply for construction-industry scholarships. National programs and local professional chapters may reserve awards for construction management and related engineering students.
- Ask every school for its institutional options. Request details on scholarships, grants, tuition waivers, payment plans, and how aid is applied to your bill.
- Ask your employer or union about tuition assistance. Get the policy and any repayment or continued-employment conditions in writing.
- Compare the remaining gap before accepting loans. Separate gift aid, earned wages, and borrowed funds; they do not have the same cost or obligations.
Make a one-page cost worksheet for each program. List tuition, mandatory fees, books, equipment, transportation, housing, and other required expenses, then subtract confirmed grants and scholarships. Keep uncertain awards in a separate column until the provider confirms eligibility and timing.

File the FAFSA every year you want aid consideration
The Federal Student Aid FAFSA application is the starting point for federal aid. Submit it for each academic year, even if your family income or enrollment has changed little. The form also supplies information many states and institutions use when awarding their own funds.
Track three different deadline systems
Federal, state, and school deadlines can differ. A missed state deadline does not necessarily eliminate federal eligibility, but it can affect state-funded aid. Check the deadline published by your state and the financial-aid deadline for every school separately; do not assume the federal opening or closing date is the only date that matters.
What happens after submission
Federal Student Aid sends a FAFSA Submission Summary. It can include estimates for grants, work-study, and loans, but it is not your final award notice. The school reviews the information, applies its own policies and available funds, and issues the actual aid offer. Respond to requests for verification or missing documents promptly so an otherwise eligible award is not delayed.
Questions to ask the financial-aid office
- Which listed amounts are grants or scholarships, which are work-study earnings, and which are loans?
- Is each award for one term or the full academic year, and does it renew automatically?
- What enrollment level, academic progress, GPA, or program requirements apply?
- When will funds credit to the student account, and can they be used for housing or other approved costs?
- Are payment plans or tuition waivers available if aid arrives after the first bill is due?
Construction-specific scholarships
Industry awards can reduce borrowing and may recognize construction coursework, leadership, financial need, or first-generation status. Eligibility is not uniform: review the current application page, accreditation language, enrollment rules, deadline, and renewal conditions for each award.

CMAA Foundation programs
The CMAA Foundation describes scholarships for students pursuing postsecondary study intended to lead to a construction management career. Its national foundation applicants must attend a U.S.-based institution accredited by a U.S. regional accrediting agency. Listed programs include the Foundation Scholarship Program, Erica Lynn First Generation Scholarship, and Fellows Scholarship.
The page states that the 2026 Foundation, Erica Lynn, and Fellows rounds are closed. That status does not predict the next opening date or future criteria. Check the Foundation page for the next cycle and contact a local CMAA chapter about chapter-specific awards, which can have different deadlines or eligibility rules.
AGC Education and Research Foundation
The AGC scholarship program lists awards for undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in qualifying construction management or construction-related engineering programs. The page identifies ABET-, ACCE-, and some ATMAE-accredited programs as eligible categories; confirm that your exact program and institution meet the current definition.
| Student level | Amount shown on the current program page | Maximum duration | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | $2,500 per year | Up to three years | Current-cycle dates, enrollment status, accreditation, renewal requirements, and whether your program is on the qualifying list |
| Graduate | $3,750 per year | Up to two years | Current-cycle dates, degree type, accreditation, enrollment status, and renewal requirements |
These are figures reported on the current AGC page and can change; treat them as program-page amounts rather than a guaranteed offer. The same page reports more than $11 million awarded to more than 4,500 students. It also advises applicants to check whether an AGC chapter in their home state or school state sponsors a local scholarship. A local chapter may be a separate application from the national program.

How to make scholarship applications stronger
- Match your coursework and career objective to the award’s stated construction focus.
- Use the exact degree title, campus, accreditation, and anticipated enrollment status requested on the form.
- Prepare a reusable document folder: transcript, enrollment or acceptance evidence, résumé, recommendation contacts, and a short career statement.
- Record each deadline, submission confirmation, renewal condition, and whether the award is sent to you or directly to the school.
- Ask the provider whether receiving another award changes the amount or creates a reporting requirement.
Use your school’s own aid and payment options
Institutional aid can be as important as national scholarships. After admission, ask the financial-aid office and the construction management department about departmental scholarships, merit or need-based grants, tuition waivers, paid campus roles, and payment plans. Some opportunities are considered automatically from the admission application; others require a separate form.
Read the offer by aid type, not headline total
A financial-aid offer can combine different kinds of assistance. A grant or scholarship generally reduces the amount you must fund without repayment, subject to its conditions. Work-study is an opportunity to earn wages through eligible employment; it is not a credit applied automatically to your bill. A loan supplies borrowed money that must be repaid under its terms. Ask the school to label each line clearly and explain what happens if you enroll less than full time, change programs, or lose eligibility.
Calculate your net bill and cash-flow timing
For each term, subtract only confirmed grants and scholarships from billed charges. Then identify when each source pays. An award that arrives after the tuition due date may require a payment-plan enrollment or temporary payment arrangement. Ask whether aid can cover approved living expenses after tuition and fees, and whether refunds are released on a schedule that fits rent, transportation, or required course materials.

An award may require a minimum GPA, satisfactory academic progress, a credit load, continuous enrollment, or a specific major. Write those conditions beside the award amount in your comparison sheet. A smaller renewable award can be more useful than a larger one-time award if its conditions are realistic and the program’s total cost is lower.

Ask an employer or union about tuition support
The 2026–27 FAFSA form advises students to check parents’ employers or unions for scholarships or tuition-assistance plans. A construction employer, contractor, trade association, or union may have a benefit, but there is no universal construction-management entitlement and the available guidance does not establish standard amounts or terms. The only reliable answer comes from the particular plan administrator.
Questions to ask before enrolling
- Does the plan cover a construction management degree, and does the institution or accreditation have to meet a specific standard?
- Is assistance paid directly to the school, advanced before enrollment, or reimbursed after you submit receipts and grades?
- Does the plan cover tuition only, or also mandatory fees, books, certification costs, or required equipment?
- What grade, credit-load, or satisfactory-progress requirement applies?
- Must you remain employed while studying, and for how long after the course or degree?
- What happens if you resign, are laid off, reduce hours, fail a class, or change employers?
- Is there a service commitment or repayment clause, and how is the repayment amount calculated?
- Are payments treated as taxable income under the employer’s policy, and who can explain the tax treatment?
Request the written plan document or an email from the administrator that states eligibility, covered costs, submission deadlines, payment timing, employment requirements, and repayment triggers. Do not rely on a supervisor’s informal promise when the benefit could affect your enrollment decision.

| Comparison item | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Net amount you must pay | Cost of attendance minus confirmed grants and scholarships | Shows the remaining gap rather than the advertised aid total |
| Type of money | Grant/scholarship, work-study wages, employer payment, savings, or loan | Separates gift aid, earned income, and money that must be repaid |
| Renewal | Number of terms or years, GPA, credit load, progress, and major requirements | Reveals whether aid can continue through graduation |
| Accreditation and eligibility | Institutional or program accreditation named by the provider | Some construction awards restrict eligible accreditors or program types |

A practical application timeline
Before applying to programs
- List the construction management degrees you are considering and note each school’s FAFSA and institutional-aid deadlines.
- Check whether each program’s accreditation matches the requirements of the CMAA, AGC, or local scholarship you may pursue.
- Ask your current or prospective employer and union for a written tuition-benefit policy.
- Estimate direct and living costs for each location so you can compare the true funding gap.
When the FAFSA cycle opens for your year
- Complete and submit the FAFSA for every school you may attend.
- Save the confirmation and monitor messages requesting corrections or verification.
- Separately confirm state and school deadlines; do not assume a federal deadline covers them.
After admission and scholarship decisions
- Send any requested documents to the financial-aid office and scholarship providers.
- Compare official offers using the worksheet above.
- Accept only the aid you need, paying attention to loan terms and work-study availability.
- Confirm how and when each award will be credited before the first payment deadline.
Before every subsequent academic year
Renew the FAFSA, verify continuing eligibility, reapply for awards that are not automatic, and ask whether a changed course load, major, employer, or campus affects your funding. Keep copies of renewal requirements and final grades that may be requested.
Common problems and how to recover
You missed a state or school deadline
Submit the FAFSA if the federal cycle remains open, then contact the state agency and school immediately to ask about late, waitlisted, or institutional options. A missed state deadline does not automatically end federal eligibility, but funds controlled by the state or school may be limited.
The FAFSA Submission Summary does not match your offer
The summary is an estimate, while the school makes the final aid decision. Ask the financial-aid office to explain differences, verification adjustments, enrollment assumptions, or unavailable funds. Do not treat the summary as money you can spend until the school issues its offer.

Ask the school for the exact institutional or program accreditation name and effective status, then compare it with the scholarship’s eligibility wording. If the provider cannot confirm that your program qualifies, do not count the award in your budget.
An employer promises reimbursement but you cannot float tuition
Ask whether direct payment or an advance is possible, whether a payment plan aligns with reimbursement dates, and what documents trigger payment. Obtain the answer in writing before signing an enrollment or service commitment.
Your award is smaller than the remaining gap
Recalculate with the lower confirmed amount, ask the school about payment plans or additional institutional aid, and review the program’s total cost. Consider work-study or employment only after checking that the hours will not jeopardize academic progress. Borrow only the documented remaining need and understand the repayment obligation before accepting a loan.
Quick Recap
What to verify before you commit
- The program is eligible for the scholarships you intend to use.
- Every amount is identified as gift aid, wages, employer support, savings, or a loan.
- Renewal requirements are achievable for your expected course load.
- Deadlines and disbursement dates cover the first bill and later terms.
- Employer or union conditions, service commitments, and repayment clauses are written down.
- Your comparison uses current official pages, not an old award list or an estimate in the FAFSA Submission Summary.
