How to Overwinter Mandevilla and Protect It From Cold

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to overwinter mandevilla is to bring it indoors before frost and before nighttime temperatures repeatedly fall below about 50–60°F. Mandevilla is a tender tropical or subtropical vine, so freezing weather can severely damage or kill it. Once indoors, choose between keeping it actively growing in a warm, bright room or storing it semi-dormant in a cool, frost-free place.

Move the plant while it is still healthy, inspect and treat it for pests, reduce watering, and return it outdoors only after frost danger has passed and nighttime temperatures are consistently warm.

When to bring mandevilla indoors

Do not wait for the first frost. Bring mandevilla inside while nighttime temperatures are still safely above its lower tolerance, particularly before repeated nights below 50–60°F.

Extension guidance commonly places mandevilla’s minimum practical temperature around 45–50°F, while other horticultural guidance recommends moving it indoors before nights fall below approximately 50–60°F. These are safety thresholds, not guarantees: cultivars vary, and a brief light chill is very different from freezing weather. A mandevilla exposed to frost may suffer severe leaf, stem, and root damage.

Before moving the plant, check the forecast and prepare its indoor location. Moving it early is preferable to trying to rescue a vine that has already been chilled or frozen.

Prepare mandevilla before bringing it indoors

  1. Inspect the entire plant. Look closely at the undersides of leaves, leaf axils, stems, the pot rim, and the surface of the potting mix. Check for aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, scale, spider mites, and other pests.
  2. Rinse the foliage and container. A firm spray of water can dislodge some insects. Rinse both the upper and lower leaf surfaces, along with the container and its rim.
  3. Treat pests before entry. If pests are present, use a labeled insecticidal soap for houseplants or horticultural oil only as directed on its label. Apply the product to the areas specified on the label, including leaf undersides when appropriate. Avoid homemade dish-soap mixtures: they can burn foliage and may not be lawful or safe to use as pesticides.
  4. Quarantine the plant. Keep the mandevilla away from other houseplants for about three weeks while you continue checking for insects or disease. A single overlooked pest can spread rapidly in the warmer, enclosed conditions indoors.
  5. Remove obvious problems. Cut out dead, diseased, damaged, or heavily infested growth. If the vine is too large to fit inside, shorten it enough to move and place it safely. Save the main structural pruning for late winter or early spring unless damaged tissue needs immediate removal.
  6. Wear gloves. Mandevilla produces milky sap that can irritate skin.

Choose one of two wintering methods

There is no single best indoor setup for every plant. Use active indoor growth if you have adequate light and want to preserve foliage. Use cool, semi-dormant storage if the plant is too large for a living space or you want to minimize winter maintenance.

Method 1: Keep mandevilla growing indoors

This method works best in a bright room, sunroom, conservatory, or greenhouse. Place the plant in bright indirect or filtered light, give it room to climb, and keep it away from cold drafts and direct contact with a cold window. Bright light is important, but sudden intense indoor or outdoor sun can scorch foliage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For active indoor growth, aim for nighttime temperatures around 60–65°F and daytime temperatures above 70°F when practical. Warmth, light, and adequate humidity help the vine continue growing, but winter growth is usually slower than summer growth.

Natural window light may not be sufficient, especially during short winter days. If the plant becomes thin and stretched or begins dropping leaves because of low light, add a full-spectrum LED grow light for plants. Supplemental lighting can help maintain more compact growth. For flowering houseplants under supplemental lighting, approximately 14–16 total hours of light per day may be appropriate; use the light manufacturer’s recommended distance and put it on an outlet timer for grow lights for a consistent schedule.

Do not expect normal winter flowering in a dim room. Mandevilla generally needs stronger and longer light than a typical indoor location provides to bloom through winter.

Watering an actively growing indoor plant

Water less often than you did outdoors. Shorter days, lower light, and cooler conditions slow growth and reduce water use. Check the potting mix rather than watering on a fixed calendar. When the mix has dried somewhat, water thoroughly enough to moisten the root ball, then allow excess water to drain completely.

  • Optimize Performance: Deploy the covers before sunset to harness residual warmth from the soil. Once morning temperatures rise above freezing, remove the covers to permit sunlight warming. Wet covers should be dried before reuse

Do not leave the container standing in water. At the same time, do not allow the root ball to remain completely bone-dry for an extended period. The correct interval depends on pot size, temperature, light, humidity, and how much growth the plant is producing.

Method 2: Store mandevilla cool and semi-dormant

Cool, dark storage is useful for a large plant or for gardeners who do not have enough indoor light. In this method, the vine is cut back and held in a dormant or nearly dormant state rather than encouraged to grow.

After washing and inspecting the plant, cut it back to roughly 6–10 inches, depending on its framework and the available storage space. Mandevilla can tolerate severe pruning and can produce new growth and flowers later from new shoots.

Place the container in a cool, dark, frost-free location such as a suitable basement, garage, or crawlspace. The location must stay above freezing and should not undergo major temperature swings. A storage temperature around 55–60°F is a practical conservative target for a dormant plant. Some guidance describes 55–60°F as adequate storage, while other guidance favors warmer winter nights above 60°F, particularly when the plant is still actively growing. The key distinction is that darkness is suitable for dormancy, not for a mandevilla producing new shoots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the potting mix on the dry side, but do not allow the root ball to become completely dry for the entire winter. Check the plant periodically and water lightly only when necessary. Do not fertilize during dormant storage.

Leaf drop and an unattractive appearance are normal possibilities. They do not automatically mean the plant has died. Inspect periodically for shriveling, rot, pests, or soft stems, and keep the container away from any location where it could freeze.

How to water mandevilla in winter

Winter overwatering is more dangerous than slight underwatering. Reduced light and cool temperatures slow the plant’s water use, so constantly wet soil can lead to root problems.

  • Active indoor plant: Let the potting mix dry somewhat between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain the container.
  • Semi-dormant plant: Keep the root ball barely moist and water lightly only when it is becoming excessively dry.
  • Never use a calendar alone: Test the mix and consider the plant’s temperature, light, pot size, and growth rate.
  • Do not fertilize dormancy: Wait until the plant has restarted growth in spring.

Late-winter pruning and restarting growth

In late winter or early spring, inspect the plant before vigorous new growth begins. Remove weak, crowded, dead, or damaged stems. Shorten long side shoots to a few buds or nodes on the permanent framework. Another practical pruning approach is to cut side shoots back to within three or four buds of that framework.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mandevilla can be pruned almost to the ground and still flower later on new basal growth, so severe pruning is not necessarily fatal. Use clean, sharp bypass pruning shears to make clean cuts, and wear gloves to protect your skin from milky sap.

If the plant was stored dormant, begin reactivating it about a month before the date it can safely return outdoors in your area:

  1. Move it from darkness into brighter light.
  2. Increase watering gradually rather than soaking a completely dormant root ball repeatedly.
  3. Wait for new shoots or clear signs of active growth.
  4. Resume fertilizer only after growth has restarted and outdoor conditions are becoming suitable.

Repot only when necessary. If the mix is compacted or the roots are crowded, refresh it in spring or move the plant into a container only slightly larger than the previous one. An excessively large container holds more moisture and can reduce flowering. A well-draining indoor potting mix is also useful when refreshing the container or rooting backup cuttings.

Take cuttings as insurance

If the mother plant is too large to manage or you want a backup, propagate mandevilla from 4–6-inch stem cuttings. Place the cuttings in potting soil or a soilless propagation mix and provide bright indirect light and humid conditions. Keep the medium appropriately moist but not saturated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cuttings are not a substitute for pest inspection. Start with healthy, pest-free material, and keep new cuttings separate from other plants until you are confident they are clean.

Move mandevilla outdoors in spring

Wait until frost danger has passed and nighttime temperatures are consistently warm. A practical target is nights above about 60°F, although the final timing depends on local weather and the plant’s condition. Do not move it outside simply because daytime temperatures feel pleasant if cold nights are still likely.

Harden the plant off over one to two weeks:

  1. Place it outdoors for a few hours in a sheltered, shady or lightly shaded location.
  2. Bring it back inside or protect it overnight at first.
  3. Gradually lengthen the time outdoors.
  4. Increase sun exposure slowly rather than moving it directly from an indoor window to full outdoor sun.
  5. Protect it from strong wind while the new growth and leaves acclimate.

Indoor-grown foliage can scorch or desiccate when suddenly exposed to direct sun and wind. Once the plant has acclimated, give it the warm, bright conditions it needs for flowering. Set it in well-drained soil or a suitable container, provide a trellis or other support, and resume regular watering and feeding as active growth returns.

Troubleshooting winter mandevilla

Leaves fall after the plant comes indoors

Leaf loss can result from lower light, cooler temperatures, the change in environment, or normal entry into dormancy. It is not automatically fatal. Keep the plant frost-free, reduce watering, and inspect closely for pests, soft stems, and signs of root trouble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stems become long and leggy

Leggy stems and wide gaps between leaves usually indicate insufficient light. Move the plant to a brighter location or add a full-spectrum LED grow light. Prune the elongated growth in late winter once you have corrected the light problem.

Whiteflies, spider mites, scale, or mealybugs appear

Isolate the plant immediately. Rinse the foliage, remove visible pests where possible, and use a product labeled for both mandevilla or ornamental plants and the pest you are treating. Follow all label directions, including application frequency and precautions. Treating only the visible upper leaf surfaces often misses pests hiding underneath.

Stems are soft or the roots smell rotten

Soft stems, a sour or rotten smell, and persistently wet soil suggest excess moisture or poor drainage rather than normal dormancy. Stop routine watering, inspect the root system, and correct drainage. A dormant mandevilla should not sit in constantly saturated mix.

The plant was hit by frost

Move it to a frost-free location and avoid making major cuts immediately unless tissue is clearly dead or rotting. Cold injury may become more visible over the following days. Remove dead material once the extent of damage is clear, but understand that a severely frozen plant may not recover. Prevention is much more reliable than frost rescue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can mandevilla survive winter outdoors?

In most of the United States, mandevilla should not be treated as a frost-hardy outdoor perennial. Bring it indoors before frost and before repeated nights fall below roughly 50–60°F. Outdoor survival depends on local climate and the specific cultivar, but freezing temperatures can kill the plant.

Should mandevilla be cut back for winter?

Cut it back enough to inspect, treat, and fit indoors. If storing it dormant, cutting it to approximately 6–10 inches is practical. For an actively growing indoor plant, remove damaged growth and save the main shaping prune for late winter or early spring.

Does mandevilla need light while dormant?

A genuinely dormant mandevilla can be stored in a cool, dark, frost-free location. A plant that is actively producing new growth needs bright light. Darkness and active growth are a poor combination and can produce weak, stretched stems.

How often should dormant mandevilla be watered?

There is no reliable fixed schedule. Check periodically and water lightly only when the root ball is becoming excessively dry. Keep it barely moist, never saturated, and do not allow it to remain completely dry for the entire winter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When can mandevilla go back outside?

Wait until frost danger has passed and nighttime temperatures are consistently warm, preferably around or above 60°F. Harden the plant off over one to two weeks, beginning in shade or a sheltered location before increasing sun exposure.

The Bottom Line

Bring mandevilla indoors before frost and before cold nights become routine. Inspect and quarantine it for pests, then either keep it warm and bright with reduced watering or cut it back and store it cool, dark, and barely moist. Restart it gradually in late winter, and return it outdoors only after warm weather is established and the plant has been hardened off.
