If “vertically” means attaching a soundbar to a vertical wall while it stays horizontal, that is a normal installation for many models. If you mean turning the soundbar 90 degrees so its long edge points up, do not do that unless the manual for your exact model explicitly allows it. The bracket may fit while the soundbar’s speakers, controls, or mounting hardware are in an unsupported position.
First, decide which “vertical” you mean
- Soundbar horizontal; wall vertical: The bar runs left to right and is attached to the wall. This is the usual wall-mounted arrangement when the soundbar supports wall mounting.
- Soundbar turned 90 degrees: The bar stands on end, with its long dimension running up and down. This is usually unsupported for conventional soundbars.
- Above or below the TV: Either location may be supported, but the approved orientation, clearances, and tilt depend on the model.
- Upside down: This is not the same as standing a soundbar on end. Do not assume either position is approved unless the manual shows it.
Sonos, for example, says to keep the Arc SL horizontal and its touch controls facing up, and not to place it vertically or on its side. Its Beam guide likewise permits wall mounting above or below a TV but says not to place the bar vertically or on its side. Why turning a soundbar on its end can cause problems
It changes the channel layout
Many soundbars arrange left, center, and right channels across the bar’s width. Turn the bar 90 degrees and those channels are no longer positioned as intended: they may stack vertically, making stereo effects and dialogue placement seem unnatural.
Drivers point in different directions
Depending on the model, a soundbar may have front-, side-, or upward-firing drivers. Rotation changes where they send sound. On a Dolby Atmos model, a driver designed to reflect sound from the ceiling may instead face a wall or point sideways. A bracket must not cover speaker openings, and the bar must have the clearances its manufacturer specifies.

Room calibration can compensate for some room acoustics, but it cannot physically redirect a driver or restore the intended left-to-right arrangement.
Controls and connections can become awkward or blocked
On the side, against the wall, or behind the TV, touch controls, status lights, an IR receiver, microphones, vents, and cable ports may become difficult to use or obstructed. Sonos’s Arc SL instructions specifically call for its touch controls to face up. Do not treat a physically possible rotation as a supported operating position.
Check the exact model before drilling
- Find the full model name and number, including generation or suffix. Similar-looking products can have different brackets and placement rules.
- Open the manufacturer’s installation guide or owner’s manual. Search for “vertical,” “side,” “orientation,” “wall mount,” “inverted,” “upside down,” and “mounting position.”
- Use the diagrams—not just the presence of screw holes—to identify approved positions and mounting points.
- Confirm the specified bracket, clearances, wall type, fasteners, and any orientation restrictions. If the guide is ambiguous, ask the manufacturer before installing.
A universal bracket that attaches to the soundbar does not prove that the soundbar is acoustically or mechanically approved for that orientation. Do not rely on a retailer photo, forum post, or apparent fit in place of the model’s instructions.

Manufacturers do support upright or inverted mounting for some speakers designed for those positions. Sonos Era 300, for example, has separate upright and inverted wall-mount guidance; that is a surround speaker, not evidence that a Sonos soundbar can be turned on its side. Sonos Era 300 guide.
How to mount a soundbar horizontally on a vertical wall
Use the soundbar’s own instructions and the bracket’s instructions together. The required screws, pilot holes, anchors, and clearances vary with the bar, bracket, and wall; do not substitute a drill-bit size or anchor based on another model.
Before you drill
- Confirm that the manufacturer permits wall mounting and choose an approved position relative to the TV.
- Measure the TV, soundbar, and bracket. Check clearance for the screen, remote sensor, microphones, upward-firing drivers, and connectors.
- Plan cable routes and verify that power and audio cables reach without tension, sharp bends, or pinching.
- Locate studs or identify the wall material and select only the fasteners specified for that bracket and surface. Check for concealed electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC before drilling.
- Unplug the soundbar before handling it. Gather a tape measure, level, pencil, stud finder, drill and specified bits, screwdriver, and the supplied mounting hardware.
Install the bracket
- Hold the manufacturer’s template or bracket at the approved location. Center it as intended relative to the TV and listening area.
- Level the template or bracket, then mark its holes. Recheck the marks and confirm they do not intersect concealed utilities.
- Fasten the bracket to studs where the instructions call for them. If the instructions allow installation on another wall type, use the specified, correctly rated anchors and installation method for that surface.
- Attach the soundbar’s mounting hardware at the exact points and in the orientation shown in its guide. Do not attach a bracket to the grille or cover a driver opening.
- Connect cables before hanging the bar if doing so is permitted and will make the ports easier to reach. Lift larger or heavier soundbars with another person.
- Engage every hook, slide, tab, and retaining screw required by the instructions. Check that the bar cannot slide, lift off, or tilt, and that the bracket itself is secure.
- Route cables so they do not strain connectors or block vents. Test audio, remote operation, microphones, and any calibration feature before concealing the cables.
Model instructions illustrate why the details matter: Bose’s TV Speaker bracket directions use a product-specific template and distinguish stud from non-stud installation. Choose the position above or below the TV carefully
Below the TV
Check that the bar does not cover the screen or TV sensor, and leave room for cables and ventilation. For the Arc SL specifically, Sonos specifies at least 4 inches (102 mm) between the top of the soundbar and the bottom of the TV when the bar is mounted below it; Sonos also recommends keeping both ends at least 1 foot (30 cm) from walls or obstructions for best sound quality. Above the TV
Use an above-TV position only if the model’s instructions permit it. Make sure the bar is not upside down unless that orientation is explicitly supported. If the bracket allows aiming, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for directing sound toward the listening area. Keep upward-firing drivers clear of the TV and other obstructions, and confirm that microphones, controls, and indicators remain usable.
If you genuinely need a vertical sound source
Do not improvise a 90-degree installation when the manual does not approve it. If all of the following are not confirmed, use another arrangement:

- The wall and specified fasteners can safely carry the load.
- Drivers, vents, controls, microphones, sensors, ports, and cables remain unobstructed and accessible.
- The manufacturer’s setup or calibration guidance supports the placement.
For a narrow installation, alternatives include keeping a narrower soundbar horizontal on a shelf, using a bracket attached to the TV mount, building a shallow shelf that preserves the bar’s intended orientation, or choosing bookshelf or tower speakers designed to stand vertically. A TV-mounted bracket can solve a wall-space problem without turning the soundbar on its end; SANUS lists an Arc/Arc Ultra-specific mount intended to extend the bar from the wall and preserve access to microphones and Atmos drivers. The bracket fits, but sound is poor
Check whether the bar has been rotated, a side or upward driver faces a wall, the TV blocks the bar, a bracket covers a speaker opening, or an end is too close to an obstruction. Restore the approved orientation and clearances first; then rerun the model’s calibration if applicable and test dialogue and multichannel content.

Stop using the installation and support or remove the bar. Check for a missing locking screw, a bracket that is not fully engaged, loose soundbar hardware, damaged fasteners, or anchors unsuitable for the wall. Reinstall according to the bracket maker’s instructions; replace damaged parts rather than reusing them.

Cables or remote control are inaccessible
Before final tightening or cable concealment, verify that rear ports can be reached and that the TV remote can communicate with the soundbar’s receiver. Use a right-angle cable only if it is compatible and does not press on or strain the port.
Calibration or voice control fails
Check that microphones are not against the wall or obstructed and that the bar is in an orientation supported by its manufacturer. Calibration cannot make an unsupported physical placement equivalent to the intended one.
The wall material or fasteners are uncertain
Do not choose anchors by a nominal weight rating alone or treat drywall, masonry, and stud fasteners as interchangeable. Follow the bracket’s wall-type instructions; if the wall cannot reliably support the installation, use a shelf or ask a qualified installer.
