Measure an awkward kitchen corner as an installation envelope, not just as two wall lengths. Empty the area, record both wall legs from the inside corner to the first obstruction, measure height and depth at several points, check whether the corner is square, and use the smallest limiting dimensions. Then compare those figures with the exact cabinet’s plan-view drawing, including doors, drawers, fillers, countertop overhangs, plumbing, electrical outlets and appliance clearances.
A cabinet box can fit on paper and still be unusable if a dishwasher door hits it, a drawer cannot open, or a blind-corner pull-out lacks room to extend. The procedure below gives you the measurements a cabinet supplier, kitchen designer or installer actually needs.

What you need before measuring
Gather a metal tape measure or folding rule, pencil, paper or a tablet, a level, a carpenter’s square or laser, masking tape and a straightedge. A helper makes long measurements more reliable. Photograph the corner before and after marking it; photos help a designer understand offsets that are difficult to capture in a single number.

- Uneven plaster, tile build-up or a wall that bows into the cabinet zone.
Mark anything that cannot move. Measure to the nearest face of each obstruction, not to the nominal wall line.
Record the corner’s basic dimensions
1. Measure both wall legs separately
Put the tape’s hook at the inside corner and measure along each wall to the first obstruction. Label the results Wall A and Wall B; do not add them together. These two legs define the available footprint for an L-shaped, diagonal or blind-corner solution.
Measure from the finished corner that the cabinet will actually touch. If tile, a backsplash or end panel will be added later, note its thickness separately. A 600 mm reading before tile is not the same as 600 mm of finished clearance.
2. Measure at several heights and depths
Furnfab’s published instruction says, “Measure the height and width in several places and always take the smallest measurement.” Apply that principle to this entire opening:
- Measure Wall A and Wall B at the floor, at cabinet worktop height and near the top of the proposed cabinet.
- Measure floor-to-ceiling or floor-to-soffit height at the corner and near both ends of the cabinet run.
- Measure usable depth from each wall to the nearest obstruction at the floor, mid-height and worktop height.
- Check the floor for a slope with a level and straightedge.
Write down every reading, then circle the smallest usable width, height and depth. Those are your limiting dimensions unless the cabinet drawing specifies a different reference point.
3. Check whether the corner is square
Use a carpenter’s square or laser if available. For a field check, mark 3 feet along Wall A and 4 feet along Wall B from the same inside-corner point. Measure the diagonal between the marks. A 5-foot diagonal indicates a square corner (the 3-4-5 check). If the diagonal is longer or shorter, the corner is out of square.
Record the actual diagonal, the two leg distances and any visible wall offsets. Give those figures to the cabinet designer; do not force a nominal 90-degree plan onto a corner that is not 90 degrees.
Identify the cabinet family before deciding whether it fits
Corner units consume space differently. The nominal width printed in a catalogue is not enough; use the manufacturer’s plan-view drawing and verify the opening, overlay and hardware clearances.
| Cabinet type | Typical example in the cited guide | How it occupies the corner | Critical checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lazy-Susan corner | 33- or 36-inch wall legs on both sides | Uses both runs and rotates storage around a central or offset axis. | Confirm the cabinet’s required legs, rotating hardware diameter, door opening and adjacent drawer clearance. |
| Diagonal sink or diagonal base | 36- or 42-inch legs on both sides | Sets the cabinet on a diagonal across the corner, often under a sink or work surface. | Check matched side dimensions, sink bowl and plumbing location, countertop geometry and door swing. |
| Blind-corner cabinet | 39 or 45 inches on one wall in the cited examples | Runs along one wall and reaches toward the adjacent run; part of the corner remains behind a fixed panel. | Measure the blind-side opening, pull-out travel, door overlay, filler and the full adjacent run. The exact manufacturer drawing controls. |
The 33/36-inch, 36/42-inch and 39/45-inch figures are examples from Lily Ann Cabinets’ guide, not universal standards. Different manufacturers use different box widths, fillers and overlays.

Lazy-Susan details
Measure the clear cabinet interior where the shelves will rotate, not only the outside wall legs. Check that a corner post, face frame or hinge does not obstruct the rotating trays. Confirm that an adjacent appliance door or drawer will not collide with the cabinet door as the tray turns.
Diagonal sink or base details
A diagonal cabinet needs a matched countertop plan. If a sink is planned, provide the cabinet dimensions and the exact sink model before fabrication; bowl width, clips and drain position can change the usable interior and plumbing route.

Blind-corner details
Measure the wall that carries the cabinet, the return wall, the blind opening and the distance to the nearest obstruction. A pull-out organizer must match the cabinet’s clear opening, internal depth, door overlay and frame construction. Do not assume an accessory will fit merely because its advertised width is smaller than the cabinet’s nominal width.
Compare cabinet choices by the space they consume
Use the same sketch to compare alternatives rather than comparing catalogue widths alone. A lazy-Susan design generally needs usable legs on both walls and enough interior clearance for the rotating trays. It offers direct access to more of the corner, but the door and tray rotation still need a clear approach. A diagonal sink or base crosses the corner, so both side dimensions must be coordinated with the countertop; it can simplify a sink layout but leaves plumbing and bowl placement less forgiving. A blind-corner cabinet concentrates the box on one wall and reaches toward the return, preserving more of one run for standard cabinets, but the hidden section and pull-out require precise opening, overlay and travel measurements.
For each option, write down five separate limits: the minimum wall-leg length on each side, the clear cabinet opening, the required filler or pull/overlay, the projection of doors and drawers, and the space needed by hardware. Then check whether the remaining run accepts the next cabinet without a collision. This makes a nominally smaller unit easier to reject when its accessory or door needs more room than a larger, differently configured unit.
Allow installation and operating clearances
Account for the niche tolerance
Furnfab’s instruction specifies that the cabinet should be at least 3 cm lower and 6 cm narrower than the niche. It also states that doors or front drawers add 2 cm to the stated cabinet depth. These are that manufacturer’s instructions; use the selected supplier’s tolerances when they differ. Apply the allowance to the smallest measured opening, not to an optimistic average.

Separate the cabinet-box dimension from the finished projection. Add the door, drawer front, handle, filler, end panel and countertop overhang when checking walkways and door swings. Record whether the supplier’s depth is measured to the box, face frame or front; two drawings can use the same nominal depth while showing different finished projections.
Map every adjacent opening
Use masking tape on the floor to outline the cabinet box, door front and drawer travel. Mark the swing arcs of nearby dishwasher, oven, refrigerator and room doors. Drawers need a straight pull-out path; a corner cabinet that technically fits can make the neighboring drawer unusable.
Also mark windows and door casings. KraftMaid recommends labeling walls and measuring from the nearest wall or corner to the center of each window and door. Record sill height and casing depth where they could interfere with a worktop or tall cabinet.

Plan around services
Locate pipe centers, valve handles, outlet boxes and cable routes on your sketch. A sink base may need a service void or removable back. An outlet behind a deep cabinet may need relocation by a qualified electrician. Never cut a structural post or alter plumbing solely to make a nominal cabinet dimension work.

Howdens states, “Always plan your kitchen/start the installation from a corner.” Start the layout at the actual inside corner, then work outward along both walls. This exposes conflicts before filler sizes are finalized.
Howdens’ installation examples show that nominal corner configurations can be 931, 1031, 1131 and 1231 mm, with different openings and adjacent-cabinet combinations. Its base-cabinet manual lists example setbacks of 231 mm for an 800 unit, 181 mm for a 900 unit and 131 mm for a 1000 unit. Those numbers are model-specific installation dimensions, not universal corner rules. Use them only when they belong to the exact cabinet system you are ordering.
Calculate the remaining run
- Write the finished Wall A and Wall B dimensions.
- Subtract the corner unit’s required leg or opening on each wall.
- Subtract fillers, end panels and any mandatory service gaps.
- Check that the remaining length accepts a standard adjacent cabinet without forcing a door or drawer into the corner.
- Repeat with the countertop overhang and appliance door arcs included.
If either remaining run is negative or leaves only a sliver of unusable space, change the cabinet family or request a custom size rather than trimming a structural cabinet on site.
Measure countertop and diagonal-corner geometry
For a diagonal countertop or sink, follow the countertop fabricator’s drawing in addition to the cabinet measurements. Hartson-Kennedy’s 2023 guide states that dimension A must be the same on both sides, dimension B is 10 inches smaller than A, and the order should specify the overall countertop dimensions. Its diagonal-corner table spans 31 x 31 through 45 x 45 inches.

Separate cabinet measurements from countertop measurements
Measure the cabinet footprint first, then show the countertop outline as a second line on the sketch. Note which edges receive an overhang and where the backsplash or wall scribe will be installed. A countertop can extend beyond the cabinet while still needing matched side dimensions at the diagonal. If the corner is out of square, provide both wall offsets and the measured diagonal instead of asking the fabricator to infer the angle.
Create a dimensioned sketch that another person can use
A useful sketch is more than a rough L shape. Draw the corner in plan view and elevation, then label:
- Inside corner and Wall A/Wall B orientation.
- Every wall-leg measurement and the point where it was taken.
- Smallest height, width and depth readings.
- 3-4-5 or measured angle result, including offsets if out of square.
- Plumbing, electrical, structural and finish obstructions.
- Window and door centers, casing depth and sill height.
- Cabinet box, filler, end panel, door and drawer projections.
- Direction and full travel of every door, drawer and pull-out.
- Countertop overhang, seam direction and sink or appliance model.
Number the walls and take photographs that show the same numbers. Send the sketch, measurements and photos together so the designer does not have to infer which reading belongs to which wall.

Ordering checklist
- Have you measured both legs from the finished inside corner to the nearest obstruction?
- Did you use the smallest reading at floor, mid-height and top?
- Is the corner confirmed square, or has the actual angle been supplied?
- Does the exact cabinet drawing show the same wall-leg, opening and filler requirements?
- Have door, drawer, handle and pull-out travel been checked against adjacent appliances?
- Are plumbing, outlets, structural elements, windows and casings plotted?
- Have the manufacturer’s niche tolerances been applied?
- Does the countertop plan use matched diagonal dimensions where required?
- Has the sink or appliance model been provided before fabrication?
Common measurement failures and fixes
The tape was measured to the wrong wall face
Symptom: The cabinet is too tight after tile, plaster or a filler is installed. Fix: Re-measure from finished faces and list every future finish thickness separately.
Only one height or depth was recorded
Symptom: The box fits at the floor but binds near the worktop, or a sloped floor leaves no level line. Fix: Take readings at several points and design to the smallest usable value.
A nominal 90-degree corner was assumed
Symptom: The diagonal countertop has a gap or the cabinet twists during installation. Fix: Perform the 3-4-5 check or laser measurement and send the actual offsets to the designer.
The cabinet box fit but the kitchen could not operate
Symptom: A dishwasher, drawer or oven door collides with the corner unit. Fix: Tape the full door and drawer projections on the floor and verify every swing before ordering.
An organizer was chosen by nominal width
Symptom: A blind-corner pull-out catches on the frame or cannot extend fully. Fix: Match the accessory to the measured clear opening, internal depth, overlay and cabinet construction.
The two wall legs were added together
Symptom: A catalogue unit appears to fit by total length, but one side runs into an appliance or casing. Fix: Keep Wall A and Wall B as separate constraints and compare each with the cabinet drawing.
The smallest point was hidden by a finish
Symptom: A backsplash, end panel or tile reduces clearance after ordering. Fix: Measure finished faces where possible and list the thickness of every finish that is not yet installed.
When to stop measuring and request a custom solution
Ask for a custom or semi-custom layout when a wall leg changes width sharply, the corner is substantially out of square, a structural post occupies the cabinet zone, or the required clearances leave no standard adjacent unit. Supply the complete sketch and photographs rather than rounding the corner to a catalogue size. A designer can then choose a different filler, reverse the blind side, alter the diagonal, or specify a cabinet built for the measured angle.
Request a written approval drawing before fabrication. It should show the plan-view footprint, wall-leg requirements, cabinet and finished depths, fillers, overlays, door and drawer swings, service cut-outs and countertop dimensions. Compare that drawing against your marked floor layout one final time; this catches a reversed wall label or mirrored blind side before the cabinet is built.

Frequently Asked Questions
What measurements are needed to order a corner cabinet?
Provide separate Wall A and Wall B lengths from the finished inside corner to the nearest obstruction, plus the smallest height and depth readings, the corner-angle check, obstructions, service locations, fillers, door and drawer projections, and countertop or sink details.
How do I know if my kitchen corner is square?
Mark 3 feet along one wall and 4 feet along the other from the same corner, then measure the diagonal. A 5-foot diagonal indicates a square corner. Record the actual result if it differs.
Will a 33-inch lazy-Susan cabinet fit my corner?
Not necessarily. The 33- and 36-inch wall-leg figures are examples, not standards. Compare both measured legs, the cabinet’s plan drawing, rotating hardware clearance, door overlay and adjacent appliance openings.
What clearance does a blind-corner pull-out need?
Match the organizer to the cabinet’s measured clear opening, internal depth, frame construction, door overlay and full pull-out travel. Nominal cabinet width alone is not enough.
How much smaller should the cabinet be than the opening?
Furnfab specifies at least 3 cm lower and 6 cm narrower than the niche, with doors or front drawers adding 2 cm to stated depth. Follow the selected manufacturer’s tolerances when they differ.
Can I use one diagonal measurement for a countertop?
No. Hartson-Kennedy says dimension A must match on both sides and dimension B is 10 inches smaller than A. Supply overall countertop dimensions and both finished wall lengths.
Should I measure before or after tiling?
Measure finished faces when possible. If finishes are not installed, record their thickness separately and subtract them from usable clearance; otherwise the cabinet may become too tight.
When should I choose a custom corner cabinet?
Request custom or semi-custom work when the corner is substantially out of square, a wall leg changes width, a structural obstruction occupies the zone, or standard fillers leave no usable adjacent cabinet run.
The Bottom Line
Clear the corner, measure each wall leg separately, repeat height and depth readings, use the smallest values, and verify the angle. Compare those limits with the exact cabinet and countertop drawings—including fillers, overlays, hardware, services and appliance swings—before ordering. If the drawing cannot accommodate the measured envelope, change the cabinet family or request a custom solution rather than forcing a standard box into an awkward corner.
