Measure two things before you order: the place where the furniture will stand and the complete route it must travel to get there. Draw a top-down plan, record walls, ceiling height, openings and fixed obstacles, tape the proposed footprint on the floor, then compare the item’s width, height, depth and usable orientation with every tight point from the building entrance to the room. A piece can fit the room and still fail at a doorway, stair turn or elevator.
Start with the two fit tests that matter
Furniture buying involves a placement test and a delivery test. The placement test asks whether the item fits the intended floor area without blocking doors, windows, radiators, outlets, built-ins or normal movement. The delivery test asks whether the packaged or assembled item can pass through the entrance, interior doors, halls, stairs, landings, turns and elevators on the way to that area.

Keep those tests separate in your notes. Room dimensions describe the finished location; route dimensions describe the narrowest usable clearances. Check both before paying a deposit or scheduling delivery. Product pages may list overall width, height and depth, but they may also provide an orientation or diagonal measurement that determines whether a sofa, cabinet or bed can turn through an opening. When a fit is close, ask the seller or delivery company for the item’s handling dimensions and required orientation.
Gather the right tools and choose one unit system
Use a retractable tape measure, a pencil and paper or a digital room-planning tool. IKEA’s room guide recommends a tape measure at least 5 m long; its guide is available at IKEA’s room-measuring PDF. A second person can hold the tape for long walls, but do not rely on memory or a single measurement read aloud without writing it down.

Pick the unit used by the product listing and use it everywhere on your plan. The IKEA guide describes recording dimensions in millimeters or centimeters, while IKEA US asks for measurements down to 1/4 inch in its design-preparation material. Mixing centimeters, millimeters and inches creates avoidable conversion errors. Write the unit in the title of every page and beside any measurement copied from a product listing.
- Retractable tape measure, preferably 5 m or longer.
- Pencil, eraser and graph paper, or a room-planning app.
- Painter’s tape for marking the furniture footprint.
- Phone camera for documenting trim, fixtures and awkward corners.
- Step stool only when it can be used safely; never lean from an unstable position.
Make a bird’s-eye floor plan before measuring details
Begin with a simple top-down outline rather than trying to measure one object at a time. Label the walls A, B, C and so on, then mark each door, window and fixed feature in its actual position. Add wall lengths, room height and any irregular shape. The IKEA room guide specifically calls for a sketch with wall labels, lengths, ceiling height, doors, windows, beams and columns. The IKEA US design-preparation guide likewise asks for a measured floor plan, openings, fixtures and obstructions.
Draw doors as an opening plus an arc showing the swing. Show windows, radiators, ducts, fireplaces, columns, beams, pipes, built-ins, vents, switches and outlets. If a sloped ceiling, low beam or shelf affects the item’s height, draw a separate wall elevation for that wall. A plan view shows length and width; an elevation records the vertical clearance that a plan alone cannot show.
Number every measurement on the sketch and keep a matching note in a worksheet. If two walls appear parallel but are not, record both ends rather than averaging them. For a non-rectangular room, measure the exact zone where the furniture will stand instead of assuming the whole room has one width.
Measure walls, ceiling height and uneven areas
Wall lengths
Measure each wall from finished surface to finished surface. Note alcoves, jogs and recesses as separate segments. Trim, skirting boards and moulding can reduce the usable width, so record the clear distance at the level where the furniture will pass or stand, not only the rough wall-to-wall dimension.
Ceiling and vertical restrictions
Measure floor-to-ceiling height in the placement zone and along the route where an upright item may need to tilt. Record soffits, beams, sloped ceilings, sprinkler heads, light fixtures and shelves. For a tall wardrobe or bookcase, compare its stated height with both the room height and the height available while the piece is being raised into position.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Variation across a surface
Old buildings and visibly uneven surfaces deserve measurements at more than one position. The IKEA installation-oriented guidance recommends checking width in several places and height at the left, center and right of an opening because surfaces can vary. That advice concerns a sliding-door installation, not furniture placement, but the same precaution is useful when a cabinet, sectional or headboard must fit a specific opening. Record the smallest clear measurement when a variation could prevent passage.
Record every opening and how it operates
For each door and window, write down the clear opening width and height, its distance from the nearest corner, and any frame or trim that reduces the opening. Measure the opening with the door fully open when that is the condition used for delivery, and note whether the slab, handle or closer still intrudes into the path. A nominal door size is not the same as the unobstructed space through which furniture can pass.
Document the direction and amount of door swing. A door that opens into the room may occupy the exact area where a cabinet or chair is planned. Record window sill height, the depth of the sill or casing, and how far a casement window projects when open. Include sliding-panel overlap and any fixed screen or blind that cannot be removed.

Copy the product’s stated length and width to the floor with painter’s tape. Pottery Barn’s furniture measuring guide recommends marking a floor footprint and checking it against entryways and passages. Keep the tape outline at the same orientation you expect to use, then walk around it as you would after installation.
Use the outline to answer practical questions:
- Does the footprint overlap a door or window swing?
- Does it cover a radiator, vent, floor outlet or required access panel?
- Can people reach the door, window, switches and storage without squeezing past it?
- Does a chair, drawer, recliner or pull-out bed need additional operating space beyond the listed footprint?
- Does the item’s height clear a sill, shelf, beam, sloped ceiling or light fixture?
Tape shows scale and conflicts on the floor; it does not replace the manufacturer’s dimensions or a route check. If the product has legs, feet, arms or a top overhang that changes the usable shape, mark those projections separately. For modular furniture, tape each module and the assembled outline so you can test both delivery pieces and the final configuration.
Measure the complete delivery route
Start at the property entrance and trace the exact path to the placement room. Measure every clear opening and constriction in sequence, not just the room door. The route may include a gate, lobby, security door, lift, corridor, stair flight, landing, turn or second doorway. The Wayfair delivery guide specifically calls out doorways, hallways, stairs, elevators and fixed obstacles.
Doors and hallways
Measure clear width with the door in the position used for delivery and clear height beneath the frame. Account for trim, hinges, handles, closers, handrails and wall protection that cannot be removed. Measure hallway width at its narrowest point and note whether a radiator, picture rail, sprinkler, low light or cabinet projects into the path.

Stairs, turns and landings
Record stair width, ceiling height over the flight, landing dimensions and the distance from the landing to the next opening. At a turn, measure the inside corner and the diagonal space available for rotating the item. A straight stair width can look adequate while a small landing prevents the required orientation.
Elevators and lifts
Measure the elevator door’s clear width and height, the interior car width, depth and height, and the diagonal or turning space if the item must be tilted. Include the threshold lip and any handrail or control panel that reduces usable depth. Confirm whether building management limits delivery hours or requires advance protection; those rules affect the practical route even when dimensions work.
Removable components
Do not assume a door, handrail or furniture leg will be removed. Note a component as removable only after confirming that removal is safe, permitted and reversible. If an item arrives boxed or in sections, obtain the dimensions of each package and the assembled piece; the largest package, not the final footprint, may govern the route.
Compare the furniture with the tightest points
Make a comparison sheet for every candidate instead of checking one measurement in isolation.

| Comparison axis | What to record | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Room footprint | Item length and width against the taped placement area, openings and fixed features | Does the item occupy the intended zone without blocking an opening or fixture? |
| Vertical fit | Item height against ceiling, sill, shelf, beam and slope clearances | Can it stand in place and be raised or tilted where required? |
| Usable clearances | Door and window swings, operating space for drawers or recliners, and walking paths | Can the room’s doors, windows and furniture functions operate normally? |
| Delivery fit | Narrowest doorway, hall, stair, turn and elevator compared with item dimensions and viable orientation | Can the item reach the room without forcing an impossible turn? |
| Measurement confidence | Units, clear boundaries, trim conditions and whether product dimensions describe the same configuration | Are you comparing like with like, or is a closer inspection needed? |
For sofas and other deep pieces, check more than width. Pottery Barn explains that entry can depend on diagonal depth and orientation; an armless piece may instead require comparing its back height with the doorway width. Use the orientation that the delivery team will actually use, and ask for product-specific handling dimensions when the listing does not state them.
Use a route worksheet so no checkpoint is missed
Write the route in travel order and record the smallest clear measurement at each checkpoint. A worksheet like the one below keeps a convenient room door from distracting you from a tighter lobby or stair turn.
| Checkpoint | Width | Height | Depth or turn note | Fixed obstruction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Building entrance | Clear opening | Clear opening | Threshold and approach | Trim, closer or rail |
| Interior doorway | Clear opening | Clear opening | Swing and adjacent wall | Handle, stop or casing |
| Hallway | Narrowest point | Lowest overhead point | Turn length | Radiator, cabinet or sprinkler |
| Stair flight | Between handrails | Lowest ceiling point | Landing and rotation space | Newel, rail or light |
| Elevator | Door and car width | Door and car height | Car depth and diagonal | Threshold or handrail |
Do not fill a cell with a nominal building dimension when trim or hardware reduces the usable boundary. If a checkpoint cannot be measured accurately, stop and obtain a clearer measurement before ordering; “close enough” is not a measurable clearance.
Handle close fits and uncertain dimensions
When a route dimension is close to an item dimension, treat the difference as a warning rather than a margin. Re-measure the opening at its narrowest clear point, verify the product dimensions for the exact color or configuration, and ask the seller whether the listed size includes feet, cushions, handles or removable parts. Confirm whether the item arrives assembled, partially assembled or boxed.
Send the delivery provider a concise route description with photographs of the tightest door, turn and stair. Ask what orientation they require and whether they use a specific diagonal or back-height measurement. Pottery Barn’s guidance identifies diagonal depth and armless-piece back height as examples of product-specific checks; those dimensions vary by design, so do not substitute a generic sofa rule.
Wayfair’s delivery guidance suggests leaving at least 4 inches between furniture and doors or hallways for delivery handling. Treat that figure as Wayfair’s retailer advice, not a building code or universal ergonomic standard. Your actual clearance still depends on the item, packaging, route and crew’s handling method.

Problem: The taped footprint fits, but the item cannot pass the entry or a stair turn.
Fix: Trace and measure the route from the property entrance, recording every narrow point and overhead obstruction.

A final pre-order checklist
- Every wall, irregular segment and ceiling height is written on a labeled plan.
- Each door and window has a clear width, clear height, corner offset and swing or opening direction.
- Trim, radiators, vents, pipes, beams, columns, shelves, outlets and switches are marked.
- The intended footprint is taped on the floor and checked against access and operating space.
- The route from the building entrance includes doors, halls, stairs, landings, turns and elevators.
- The narrowest width, lowest height and most difficult turn are identified.
- Furniture dimensions and route measurements use the same unit system and clear boundaries.
- Diagonal, back-height or package dimensions have been obtained when the item’s orientation requires them.
- Any close fit has been reviewed with the seller or delivery provider before scheduling.
When to use a measuring or design service
If the room is irregular, access is shared, or several fixed obstacles make the route difficult to document, a local measuring or interior-design appointment can add a second set of eyes. IKEA describes preparation for its interior-design service, and Pottery Barn describes in-home or store appointments. Availability, scope and fees vary by location, so verify the service in your area and provide your own measurements and photographs for confirmation rather than assuming a particular outcome.
Why careful measurements are worth the time
IKEA’s room-measuring guide states: “MEASURING YOUR ROOM ISN’T HARD TO DO AND IT’S IMPORTANT YOU GET IT RIGHT BECAUSE YOUR MEASURETMENTS WILL BE THE BASIS FOR ALL YOUR PLANNING AND DESIGN REQUIREMENTS.” The spelling and capitalization are reproduced exactly from that guide. The practical implication is straightforward: a labeled plan, a taped footprint and a measured delivery route turn a vague hope that furniture will fit into a checkable decision. Measure the destination and the journey, then order only when both sets of dimensions work.
