Measure the generator’s maximum outside width, adjacent depth, and ground-to-top height; write the three dimensions down separately, then compare them with the cover’s stated fit dimensions and model list. For storage covers, include handles, wheels, and other protrusions when the seller’s instructions require it. Apply only that seller’s rounding or ease allowance—allowance rules are not universal. A storage cover must not be treated as a running cover unless the product and generator instructions specifically permit operation under it.
Why generator wattage is not a cover size
Wattage describes electrical output, not the physical envelope a cover must surround. Two generators with similar wattage can have different frame widths, wheel kits, handle assemblies, fuel-tank shapes, control panels, or exhaust clearances. A cover selected by wattage alone can bind on a handle, stop short of the wheels, or leave excess fabric that catches wind.

Cover fit is a three-dimensional measurement problem. You need the largest outside width, the deepest front-to-back measurement next to that width, and the total height from the ground to the highest point. Keep those axes distinct and use the orientation labels in the listing; a seller’s “length” may correspond to your width, while another listing may call the same axis “depth.”

Measure the machine in a stable, open area while it is switched off and cool. You need a flexible tape measure, a notepad or phone, and a way to record whether each number is in inches or another unit. Do not measure around a running generator, hot exhaust, or moving parts.

- Remove temporary items that will not remain with the generator, but leave installed wheels, folding or fixed handles, control-panel guards, and other permanent attachments in place.
- Use the same unit used by the cover listing. If you convert units, label the converted values and retain the originals so a rounding error is visible.
- Take each dimension at its maximum point rather than assuming the frame is a perfect rectangle.
Measure width, depth, and height step by step
1. Find the widest outside width
Stand facing the side you regard as the generator’s front. Measure straight across the widest left-to-right span, from the outermost point on one side to the outermost point on the other. If a handle, wheel, axle, or guard extends farther than the frame, include it when the chosen cover’s instructions call for protrusions to be included. Coverstore’s storage-cover guidance specifically includes handles, wheels, and anything else extending beyond the generator; its instructions are at How to Measure Your Generator.
Do not measure only the metal frame if the cover must pass over a fixed handle or wheel. If an attachment folds, decide whether the cover will be installed with it folded or extended and use that actual storage position.
2. Measure the adjacent deepest depth
Measure front to back along the axis next to the width you just recorded. Follow the generator’s deepest outside contour, including the protrusions required by the selected seller’s directions. A control-panel shelf, fuel-tank edge, wheel hub, or rear handle can determine this number even when most of the body is narrower.

A diagonal measurement is not a usable depth because it combines two axes and can make a cover appear to fit when it does not.
3. Measure height from the ground
Place the tape at the ground contact plane and extend it vertically to the highest point of the generator. Include a permanently mounted handle, frame bar, or raised panel that the cover must pass over. Record the full ground-to-top measurement rather than the height of the engine housing alone.

For its storage covers, Coverstore recommends a cover height 1–2 inches shorter than the generator to promote breathability. This is a seller-specific fit recommendation, not permission to expose the top of the machine; confirm how the particular cover is designed before applying it.
4. Record a clean measurement set
Write the result in a fixed order such as width × depth × height, with units and the measuring position. For example, an illustrative record might be “27.5 in W × 20.25 in D × 21.75 in H, handles extended.” The numbers in this example are only a recording format; use your generator’s measurements for a purchase.
Read a cover listing before comparing numbers
A dimension printed on a product page can describe the generator the cover fits, the finished cover, or a maximum envelope. Determine which one applies before deciding that a size is large enough.
| Listing detail | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Published dimensions | Whether width, depth, and height refer to the generator or to the sewn cover | A finished-cover dimension may include built-in ease, while a generator-fit dimension is a target machine size. |
| Maximum dimensions | Whether the numbers are hard upper limits | A protruding wheel or handle beyond a maximum can prevent installation even if the body fits. |
| Compatible models | Exact model names and frame versions | Model compatibility can account for contours that three simple numbers miss. |
| Orientation labels | Which listing axis is called width, length, or depth | Swapping axes can create a cover that is long enough in one direction but too narrow in the other. |
| Use designation | Storage, transport, or running operation | Construction, ventilation, clearance, and retention requirements differ by use. |
For an example of a model-based listing, WEN’s 56404 Universal Weatherproof Small Generator Cover identifies compatible models and maximum dimensions. Compare your measured envelope with both parts of that information rather than relying on “small” or on wattage.
Champion Power Equipment’s All Weather Cover for 5000–7500 Watt Frame Type Generator is another model/dimension-based storage listing and includes a wheel caveat. Read that caveat in the context of your wheel configuration; a frame-type machine without the same wheel arrangement may not have the same fit.

Apply the seller’s allowance rule once
Manufacturers and cover sellers build ease into products differently. Some ask you to round your measurements; others add room during manufacture. Do not add a generic “extra inch” to a number that already includes the seller’s allowance, and do not combine two sellers’ rules.
| Seller guidance | Measurement or allowance instruction | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Coverstore storage covers | Round measurements up to the nearest inch; choose slightly larger width or depth if a matching stock size is unavailable; its storage guidance recommends a cover height 1–2 inches shorter than the generator. | Round your recorded values as directed, then compare with the listed generator-fit dimensions. Follow the height recommendation only for the applicable storage-cover design. |
| Coverstore custom covers | The custom-cover guide says width/depth allowance is added during manufacture. | Submit the requested generator measurements without independently adding another manufacturing allowance. See How to Measure Your Custom Generator. |
| Cover Us | Round measurements to the nearest quarter inch; the seller says it adds 1–1½ inches of width/depth leeway. | Use quarter-inch inputs and let that stated leeway provide the width/depth ease. Follow the site’s measurement directions at Generator Covers. |
| Covers & All | The guide says it adds 0.5–1.5 inches to width and depth while retaining the supplied height. | Provide the edge-to-edge width, depth, and height it requests; do not add the 0.5–1.5-inch amount again. Its instructions are in How to Measure Generator Covers. |
These instructions are seller-specific conventions, not an industry-wide standard. If a listing does not clearly state whether its dimensions are for the generator or the finished cover, ask the seller before ordering or choose a listing with an explicit maximum and model fit.
Storage cover versus running cover
Storage covers
An ordinary weather or all-weather cover protects a generator while it is parked and not operating. It is removed before startup unless the manufacturer expressly says otherwise. The cover’s fit normally follows the outer storage envelope, including the protrusions specified by its sizing instructions.
Running covers
A running cover is a separate product category designed around ventilation, exhaust routing, access, and operating conditions. Westinghouse’s iGenTent Inverter Generator Running Cover uses a perimeter-based fit method that excludes wheels and handles and lists operating-weather specifications. That method cannot be substituted for the storage-cover width/depth/height method.
If you intend to operate a generator under a cover, use only a purpose-built running cover whose instructions identify your generator and operating conditions. Follow the generator manufacturer’s ventilation and exhaust requirements as well as the cover instructions. Never infer that a storage cover is safe to leave on during operation.

Adjustment and frame-specific instructions
Some covers are adjusted around a frame rather than selected by a simple rectangular envelope. Champion’s Wet Weather Generator Cover Assembly manual provides frame-measurement instructions for cover adjustment. Use that procedure when your cover is an adjustable frame assembly; do not replace it with generic storage-cover dimensions.
Compare otherwise-suitable covers
Once your dimensions pass the basic fit check, compare the features that affect installation and use. Keep the evidence comparable: a material claim on one listing does not establish equivalent weather performance on another.
- Fit basis: generator dimensions, finished-cover dimensions, maximum envelope, or named compatible models.
- Protrusion treatment: whether wheels, handles, axles, and guards are included, excluded, or addressed by a separate perimeter measurement.
- Purpose: storage-only, transport, or operation under a running cover.
- Material and weather resistance: use the exact fabric and weather claims stated by the seller rather than assuming “weatherproof” means identical protection across products.
- Retention: check drawcords, straps, buckles, elastic hems, or other closure methods and whether they can secure the cover around your frame.
- Ease convention: determine whether the listed dimensions already include the seller’s manufacturing allowance.
Worked example: turning measurements into a size decision
Suppose your measured generator is 27.5 inches wide, 20.25 inches deep, and 21.75 inches high, with the installed wheels and fixed handle included. First, label those numbers as the generator envelope; do not silently swap depth and height.
- Open the candidate listing and identify whether its dimensions describe the generator or the finished cover.
- Check the supported model list and any wheel or handle caveat.
- Apply that seller’s rule. Under Coverstore’s stock-cover guidance, you would round the horizontal measurements up to whole inches and look for a suitable height recommendation; under Cover Us, you would submit quarter-inch values and account for its stated width/depth leeway; under Covers & All, you would provide the edge-to-edge values and rely on its stated width/depth addition.
- Reject a candidate whose maximum width, depth, or height is below the relevant value, even if its wattage range looks correct.
- If no stock size satisfies all three axes and the protrusion requirements, move to a custom cover rather than forcing a tight fit.
When no stock cover fits
A custom cover is the practical fallback when a wheel kit, extended handle, unusual frame, or nonstandard proportions defeat stock sizes. Measure the same three axes, follow the custom seller’s edge-to-edge or perimeter instructions exactly, and state which attachments remain installed. Coverstore’s custom guide explains its measurement method and says it adds width/depth allowance during manufacture; Cover Us and Covers & All publish their own input and allowance conventions. Availability and lead times depend on the seller, so confirm them before submitting measurements.
Do not “solve” a mismatch by ordering a much larger cover without checking retention. Excess width can sag, collect water, or move in wind, while insufficient height can expose the top or prevent the closure from engaging. A custom pattern or a cover designed for the exact model may provide a more secure result than simply sizing up.

Common measurement mistakes and fixes
Measuring the body but not the attachments
Symptom: the cover stops at a handle or will not pass the wheel hubs. Fix: repeat width and depth at the outermost permanent points required by the chosen listing, then check its wheel/handle policy.
Using wattage as the only selector
Symptom: the advertised wattage range matches, but one axis is too short. Fix: use wattage only as a preliminary model clue; approve the cover only after all three dimensions and the model list agree.
Swapping axes
Symptom: the cover appears long enough but cannot wrap around the sides. Fix: rewrite your record as width × depth × height and map each axis to the listing’s labels before ordering.
Recommended Free Tools
Adding allowance twice
Symptom: the result is excessively loose or the custom form rejects the values. Fix: determine whether the seller asks for raw measurements or expects you to add ease; apply one convention only.
Leaving a storage cover on while running
Symptom: a weather cover is treated as an operating shelter. Fix: remove it before startup, or switch to a purpose-built running cover whose fit and operating instructions explicitly support your generator.
