How to Make Your Home Quieter From Traffic and Construction Noise

Start by locating and sealing noise leaks around openings. Then consider targeted window or door improvements and ventilation needs before major wall work.

To reduce traffic or construction noise, first find where it is getting in, then seal gaps around windows, doors and wall penetrations. If noise still comes through, consider improving the specific window or door involved before investing in major wall work. The right result depends on the whole exterior assembly—and no general guide can promise silence or a fixed decibel reduction in a particular home.

Why the weakest opening matters

Sound can enter through walls, windows, doors, vents and gaps around service penetrations. A relatively small leak may undermine improvements elsewhere, so adding material to a wall is not automatically the best first step. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) explains that sound enters through a building’s acoustically weakest points and identifies windows as a common weak point in a wall: The Audible Landscape.

Traffic and construction noise can reach a home by different routes, and the available guidance does not establish a universal retrofit or product performance figure for either. The practical approach is to identify the path in your home and match the work to it.

1. Find the likely sound paths

Listen in the rooms where the noise is most disruptive, especially near the perimeter of windows and doors, ventilation openings and visible wall penetrations. Note which rooms face the road or work site and whether a quieter room is available for sleeping or working. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests moving a bedroom away from the roadway where possible in its Quieting in the Home homeowner’s guide.

  • Check whether sound seems strongest at a window or door edge rather than across the wall surface.
  • Look for gaps around frames, pipes, cables and other service openings.
  • Notice whether an open window or ventilation opening changes what you hear.
  • Compare rooms on the noisy side with rooms farther from the source.

2. Seal straightforward gaps first

For operable windows and doors, use compatible weatherstripping or gaskets suited to the gap and the way the unit opens. For fixed gaps, use a suitable caulk or acoustic sealant compatible with the surface. Seal around service penetrations carefully. EPA identifies window gasketing and sealing wall penetrations among its noise-control measures.

  • Choose materials for the gap size, substrate and exposure; a product intended for a moving sash may not suit a fixed joint.
  • Keep doors and windows able to open and close properly, and do not block required vents or interfere with a door’s operation.
  • Do not compromise fire egress or other safety requirements while trying to reduce noise.

Sealing targets leaks; it does not replace a window, door or wall upgrade when sound is passing through the assembly itself.

3. Improve the window or door if it remains the weak point

If noise persists after obvious gaps are sealed, consider whether the affected opening needs a larger improvement. EPA’s traffic-noise guidance describes options such as thicker glazing, storm windows, absorbent lining in the space between window layers, and solid-core doors with perimeter gaskets and threshold seals. These are possible measures, not prescriptions for every home: suitability depends on the existing opening and the actual sound path. See the EPA homeowner guide.

Window, door and wall performance should be considered together. FHWA’s building insulation design procedures treat noise reduction as a question of the assembly, including openings and other paths—not just one component’s rating. Avoid choosing an upgrade from a product claim alone when the surrounding frame, seals or other openings may remain weak.

4. Assess the whole wall before major work

If the noise continues after leaks and openings have been addressed, assess the wall assembly and other possible paths before adding mass or decoupled layers. The FHWA guidance notes that windows, doors, leaks and room absorption all affect calculated noise reduction. For expensive or disruptive work, a qualified assessment can help determine whether the wall is actually the limiting path and what improvement is appropriate.

5. Keep ventilation and comfort in the plan

Closing windows generally improves isolation compared with leaving them open, but a closed-window strategy still has to provide suitable fresh air and heating or cooling. Do not seal required ventilation openings or leave a household without safe ventilation. If serious noise makes closed windows necessary for long periods, consider how the dwelling is ventilated and conditioned before committing to a retrofit.

What published decibel figures can—and cannot—tell you

An EPA historic document gives approximate national-average building sound-level reductions of 15 dB with windows open and 25 dB with windows closed. Those are reference values from a 1978-era report, with variation among building categories; they are not measurements of an individual home or a promise for a particular project. The figures are in Protective Noise Levels: Condensed Version of EPA Levels Document.

The EPA’s historic Quieting in the Home manual also describes about 6 dB for low-pitched sound and more than 10 dB for high-pitched sound for the combined exterior-shell measures in that specific discussion. These values do not establish the performance of a single product or predict the result in a reader’s home; consult the manual for its context.
