It shapes ice; it does not make cloudy ice clear. For the best result, prepare a blank that fits your specific press, center it, and let the tool do the work without forcing it.
What you need
- A copper ice ball press and, if supplied or required by its design, a stable drip tray.
- A frozen ice blank sized for that press. Check the manufacturer’s instructions or product listing for the accepted size; there is no universal blank size.
- Ice tongs for removing and handling the finished sphere, particularly if they are included with your press kit.
For example, Pressice’s kit listing includes a tray and tongs among its accessories: Pressice Barware Set. Kit contents vary, so verify what comes with the particular press you have.
How to use a copper ice ball press
- Prepare and freeze a compatible blank. Use an ice blank made for your press; a cube is common, but the dimensions and shape depend on the model.
- Set up the press. Place it on its drip tray if it has one, or on a stable surface suitable for meltwater. Follow the instructions for your model, including any specified warm-up or cleaning steps.
- Center the ice. Put the blank in the lower half of the press, aligned with the cavity. Pressice’s manual workflow describes placing the cube on the lower press and releasing the cover to slide down its alignment pins.
- Let the press shape the ice. Allow the halves to meet under the press’s own weight. Do not push or force them together to speed the process. The copper transfers heat to the blank, melting its outer corners until the remaining ice takes the shape of the cavity.
- Remove the sphere carefully. Use tongs where provided, then transfer the sphere to a glass or suitable storage. Keep hands clear of the mating surfaces while the press is closing.
Pressice advises warming its manual press under water for about 30 seconds, but that is guidance for that model—not a universal copper-press step. Follow the current instructions for your own press. Timing also varies by design and blank; the available product information does not establish a cycle time that applies to every press.
How do I make the ice sphere clear?
Make clear ice before pressing. A press reshapes the blank but does not remove cloudiness already inside it. Directional freezing is one method: it controls the freezing direction so air and impurities are pushed toward an area that can be separated from the clear ice. Wintersmiths describes this approach for its clear-ice system: Wintersmiths on directional freezing. This is the manufacturer’s explanation of its method, not independent testing of every clear-ice maker.

Pressice suggests boiling water as a clarity tip, but its instructions do not establish that boiling alone guarantees a clear sphere. If transparency matters, use a blank prepared by a clear-ice method and follow that method’s instructions before pressing.
How long does it take to make an ice sphere?
There is no established universal press time. Warm-up requirements and shaping time depend on the press, its temperature, and the size and shape of the blank. Use the timing in the instructions for your exact model rather than borrowing a figure from another press. For instance, Pressice’s advice to warm its model under water for about 30 seconds is product-specific.

Do not confuse blank-freezing or tempering instructions for a mold with press timing. BERLINZO gives its own mold system a 24–28-hour freeze window, cautions against exceeding 30 hours, and recommends tempering its spheres for 3–5 minutes; those directions apply to that mold, not to copper presses generally.
Choosing a press and compatible accessories
Check the fit and handling details before choosing a copper ice ball press. Useful details include the stated press material, accepted blank size, drainage and tray design, included tools, and whether model-specific use and care instructions are available. A clear-ice maker or mold prepares the blank; it does not replace the press. Tongs and a drip tray may be included or sold separately, so confirm the listing.

Meltdown describes its Mogul as made from 99.8% solid copper and says it shapes ice into a sphere. Those are manufacturer claims about that product, not independently verified comparisons with other presses: Meltdown Mogul. Available information does not support a controlled performance ranking among presses.
Manual copper presses versus powered presses
A manual copper press and an electrically powered press are different tools. Do not transfer operating or safety instructions between them. FirstBuild’s Forge, for example, is a powered clear-ice press whose manual specifies 15A at 120VAC, uses tongs, and warns about hot surfaces. Those requirements and cautions apply to the Forge, not to a room-temperature manual copper press: FirstBuild Forge.
