Yes, you can make ice using water collected from air—but not by freezing air directly. First, an atmospheric water generator captures water vapor and turns it into liquid water; then that water is frozen in a separate freezer or ice maker. The process uses energy, and the amount of water collected depends heavily on local temperature and humidity.
How ice can be made from air
Air contains water vapor, even when it looks dry. To make ice from that moisture, you need to collect it as liquid water and then freeze it. An atmospheric water generator (AWG) performs the collection stage; an ice maker or freezer performs the freezing stage.
- Collect moisture. An AWG draws water vapor from air using condensation or a moisture-attracting material.
- Collect liquid water. The captured moisture is released or condensed into a reservoir.
- Freeze it. Transfer the water to an ice maker or freezer. A countertop ice maker does not draw water vapor from the surrounding air; it needs liquid water in its reservoir.
Two ways to collect water vapor
Condensation: cool air below its dew point
In a condensation-based AWG, air passes over a cold surface. When that surface is below the air’s dew point—the temperature at which water vapor begins condensing—droplets form and can be collected. It is the same basic effect that makes moisture appear on a cold glass, though a glass is only an illustration, not a practical water-harvesting device.
How well this works depends on both temperature and humidity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that atmospheric water generation is climate-dependent: EPA overview of atmospheric water generation. Lower humidity and a dew point below freezing make refrigeration-based collection more challenging.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅ [Revolution] - Game-changing revolution in drinking water industry! Brings you the purest water by extracting moisture from the air and purifying the water with built-in air and water filtration system. No plumbing or piped water is needed. Just plug into a power outlet! No installation is needed.
- ✅ [Purifying] - With built-in air and water filtration system such as PAC treatment, Ultrafiltration, carbon block filter system, and UVC-LED sterilization system, etc., it produces drinking water that tastes fresh, pure, and soft.
- ✅ [Production Volume] - The produced water volume depends on the level of humidity in the air and the ambient temperature. Work best in areas with relative humidity levels ABOVE 40% and environmental temperature ABOVE 59°F (15°C). The maximum production volume is 2.64 Gallon (10L) each day (with the temperature of 86°F and humidity of 80%).
- ✅ [Healthy] - Free from contaminants like heavy metal, pesticides, and other impurities found in ground or surface water. Say goodbye to chlorine and chemicals from urban water supply system. The water tank is made of Food-grade PP (Polypropylene). Say goodbye to plastic bottles and reduce your carbon footprint. Help reduce the humidity level in the room.
- ✅ [Easy and Convenient] - Can also be connected to solar pannels (paired with a power station or battery bank), makes it a perfect water source for homes, RVs, trailers, boats, off-grid or emergencies during natural disasters.
Sorption: capture moisture, then release it
A sorption system uses a material that attracts and holds water vapor. The system later regenerates the material—often by applying heat—so water can be released and collected. This approach can work in dry air, but performance depends on the sorbent, local humidity, regeneration energy, and cycle time.
A Nature Communications study demonstrated a device using MOF-801 in Tempe, Arizona, at relative humidity levels of 10–40%. The study reported about 14% thermal efficiency for that device, measured as solar input converted to water. These are results from one experimental system, not a general efficiency rating for atmospheric water generators: Nature Communications study of an MOF-801 atmospheric water harvester.

Why climate changes the amount of water and energy required
There is no single output or energy figure that applies to every air-to-water system. In a 2019 experimental investigation, one tested device produced 1.78 liters per hour while using 0.75 kWh per liter under a warm, humid chamber condition. Under a mild, dry condition, it produced 0.28 liters per hour at 4.71 kWh per liter. Those figures describe that apparatus under the study’s specified conditions; they are not a forecast for a household product: 2019 Journal of Cleaner Production study of atmospheric water extraction under different climatic conditions.
- Warm, humid air: generally offers more moisture for a condensation system to collect.
- Cool or dry air: can reduce collection and make each unit of water more energy-intensive for refrigeration-based systems.
- Sorption systems: may collect in arid conditions, but their performance and energy needs depend on the material and regeneration cycle.
Before choosing equipment, check its stated operating conditions and output basis. A production rate measured in a particular temperature and humidity cannot safely be assumed for a different climate.

What you need for the freezing stage
Once liquid water is available, a countertop ice maker can handle the separate freezing step. For example, Midea lists its MERI26B1AGY countertop model with a 1.3-liter water tank, production of 8 pieces per 6 minutes, and a manufacturer-rated capacity of 26 pounds per 24 hours. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results, and actual output may depend on operating conditions: Midea MERI26B1AGY product page.
When comparing ice makers, consider reservoir size, ice production and storage capacity, ice shape, footprint, cleaning needs, and power requirements. An ice maker is only the final appliance in the chain; it does not replace an AWG.

Is water collected from air safe to drink?
Collecting water from air does not by itself establish that the water is potable. If you plan to consume it or use it in ice, use equipment intended to produce potable water and follow its treatment, sanitation, and maintenance instructions. The EPA’s overview describes atmospheric water generation, but the method of collection alone is not a drinking-water safety certification: EPA overview of atmospheric water generation.
