This pushes most trapped air and impurities into the last liquid or cloudy section. Remove that section, then cut the clear ice into cubes.
Why directional freezing makes clearer ice
In a standard ice tray, water freezes from several directions. Air and impurities can become trapped as the ice forms, leaving it cloudy. With directional freezing, the insulated sides encourage freezing to advance from one exposed surface—usually the top in a home freezer. The air and impurities collect largely in the final unfrozen or cloudy portion. Food scientist Polly Burey of the University of Southern Queensland explains that clear ice uses regular water; the difference is the freezing process (University of Southern Queensland).

Make a clear ice block with a small cooler
- Use water that is safe to drink. Fill a small insulated cooler with water, leaving enough room to lift the resulting block out safely.
- Place the cooler in the freezer with its top uncovered. The insulation around the sides favors freezing from the exposed top.
- Check the water periodically. When a clear frozen section has formed while cloudy liquid remains, remove the block and pour off the liquid. There is no dependable universal freezing time: the vessel, amount of water and freezer conditions vary.
- If the block freezes solid before you remove it, cut away the cloudy section with an appropriate large serrated knife.
- Set the block on a stable work surface, allow yourself room to work, and cut the clear portion into cubes.
The cooler method makes a larger block, but it uses freezer space and requires separating or cutting off the cloudy end before portioning the ice.

Use a smaller insulated vessel or a clear-ice tray
An insulated mug can let you try the same principle with an item you already have, though it yields less ice. A purpose-built insulated clear-ice tray is another option for smaller portions. Follow the maker’s directions, particularly for removing or discarding the cloudy portion. Food Network reports obtaining crystal-clear ice with a specialized tray designed for directional freezing (Food Network).

Why boiling or changing the water may not be enough
Boiling can reduce dissolved gases, and distilled or filtered water changes what is in the water. Neither approach controls the direction in which a conventional tray freezes. The University of Southern Queensland’s food-science guide says that tap, filtered, boiled or distilled water in an ordinary tray can still produce cloudy ice. Food Network’s reported comparisons likewise did not find that water choice alone reliably produced fully clear cubes, though boiled water may look clearer. If clarity is the goal, change the freezing setup rather than relying on water treatment alone.
Choose a setup that fits your freezer and batch size

Use safe water
Clear appearance does not show that questionable water is safe to drink. Start with drinking-quality water, and follow local public-health advice if your supply is suspect. In its emergency guidance, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service advises filtering or settling cloudy water before boiling; it calls for a one-minute boil, followed by cooling and storage in clean, covered containers (USDA FSIS). That is emergency water-safety advice, not a method for making clear ice. FDA guidance about safe water and sanitary production applies to packaged ice rather than a household recipe (FDA).
